Using CCC and Time Machine

My HD is partitioned into 3 volumes: one with all Apps, Library, System, Users, etc, and two other Volumes are set for each person who uses this computer. Should all my data be OK if I CCC the first Volume with all system files to one Seagate Ext HD (to use as a bootable), and TM the other two Volumes with all our individual files on a second Seagate Ext. HD?  Seems right but I'm new to TM and just started with it yesterday.  Previously, I'd been using one Seagate backup with DejaVu but TM appears to be aneasier way to retrieve files, just not bootable.
And just a thought: is it possible to CCC the first Volume and TM the other two Volumes to the same Seagate Ext. HD (excluding the first volume from TM)? Would this create a bootable backup with everything on it or is it too 'iffy'?

Not sure I was able to follow your various volumes; however, in general:
if you want more than Time Machine on an external, you need to partition that external first. Mare sure it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the GUID Partition scheme. Make one for TM, one for CCC, and/or a third for drag & drop stuff if that is what you want.
Now, if you want a second backup, just do the same thing there - it's best to have more than one backup - hard drives do fail and if you have both TM and a bootable clone on the same drive, they'll both be gone if it fails.
Also not sure I understand what you have on your internal: you do have a complete system on one partition (including applications, Library, System, etc), right?

  • Cannot Find Photos on External Hard Drive Using iPhoto and Time Machine

    Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting on this forum and am really hoping for some help! I have a 2006 PowerBook G4 that is running iPhoto and Time Machine, and I've used an external hard drive to backup everything on the computer via Time Machine. When I plug the external hard drive into my newer 2010 MacBook Pro, I follow this path to try to access the photos:
         External Hard Drive > Backups.backupd > PowerBook G4 12" > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Me > Pictures > iPhoto Library
When I click "iPhoto Library", I get the following message:
"The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library."
So, I do as the error message says and I hold down the "option" key and iPhoto launches and says:
What Photo Library do you want iPhoto to use?
In this case, I choose "Other Library..." and again follow this path:
         External Hard Drive > Backups.backupd > PowerBook G4 12" > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Me > Pictures > iPhoto Library
When I choose this, I again get the following message:
The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library.
So as you can see, I'm feeling a bit like I'm chasing my tail in trying to open these photos. I did follow another user's advice and confirm that all photos are infact on the hard drive by using the "control" button and clicking "iPhoto Library" under the pictures folder, and choosing "Show Package Contents". All looks to be in tact in the "originals" folder when showing package contents, however, I just can't find a way to actually view the photos in iPhoto. I really don't want to import all the photos to my current MacBook Pro, because I'd like them to live on the external hard drive (which is formatted for Macs) so that I can browse the photos on the external drive, rather than housing it on my computer.
One other thing I tried was opening iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and going to File > Browse Backups...  which essentially opens Time Machine and shows me the photos on my MacBook Pro but gives me no option to view them from my External Hard Drive.
Any super users out there willing to lend me some help?
    Thanks!

The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library.
You can have an iPhoto library on an external drive and use it from different machines
and you can have a Time Machine backup
The two can not be on the same volume - and iPhoto can not access the TM backup - it must be restored to use it

  • Creating an Airdisk USB EXT HDD using AEBS and Time Machine

This is what I have learned in setting up my Airport Extreme USB Airdisk for Time Machine.
Your HDD has to be initialized properly, especially if it is or has been formatted to FAT32.
Using Apple Disk Utility located in the Utility's Folder.
    Go to the Partition tab.
    Create two partitions.
Under Options, select GUID Partition Table (what you would use to make a Mac OS boot disk) and click OK then Apply.
Once your partitions are in place, go back to the Partitions Tab and revert back to just one partition, still keeping the GUID Partition Table option.
    Click OK and Apply.
Some people have gotten this to work without creating two partitions. If you like, try creating just a single partition, but using the GUID Partition Table option. This may be all it takes to break the chokehold.
After my drive was properly partitioned and initiated, it was available in the "Shared" menu (assuming file sharing is enabled), and I was able to set up an ext USB Airdisk in the Airport Extreme using the Airport Utility found in the "Utilities" folder of your Applications folder.
Connect the hard disk into the USB port on the back of the AirPort Extreme Base Station.
Launch AirPort Utility from the Applications:Utilities folder.
Select your Base Station from the list on the left then click the Manual Setup button.
    Click Disks in the toolbar.
Click to select the File Sharing tab.
Make sure Enable file sharing is selected.
Choose With a disk password, or With base station password if you want to secure the shared disk with a password, it seems the "With Accounts" ption is to be avoided.
Choose Not allowed, Read only, or Read and write to assign guest access to the disk.
Select the Share disks over Ethernet WAN port checkbox if you want to provide remote access to the disk over the WAN port. If you do share disks over the Ethernet WAN port you can also select to Advertise disks globally using Bonjour.
Finally set the Workgroup and WINS Server for Windows File Sharing if you choose to do so.
Click the Update button to complete your changes.
AirPort will need to reboot the Base Station to continue.
    Click the Continue button.
After doing these steps I was still not able to use it in Time Machine until I did the following:
Open Terminal and paste in the following command:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Hit return and I imagine your disk is now available in the Time Machine
I have read that the name of your Airdisk is case sensitive, it was not the case, but worth changing if you still have issues.
Also, the initial backup via wireless is quite slow. I recommend hardwiring to the network, ie, plugging the computer in question into your AEBS for the first Time MAchine backup, then use wireless Airport for subsequent backups.
I now have all four of my computers backing up to a single 1TB Airdisk and very happy about it.
Another tidbit I found was that people were not seeing the new Airdisk auto mount when Time Machine tried to do its thing. To enable auto recognition it seems all you need to do is mount the disk via the shared menu of any finder window, then go to your System Preferences and the Accounts preference pane and in the Login Items, just add the Airdisk to the menu.
Good luck to all and please post back with questions or comments.
    Henry

good catch. I never use spotlight on my external drives, reason being eject problem then I'm thinking could lead to other problems.

  • Can't use pitch and time machine

    Hi,
I've got a big problem with audio files. When I go on the sample editor and I select all the sample I can't use on the menu factory the following functions :
time and pitch machine, grove machine and many others
the only functions which are avalaible are the following :
groove midi and audio in score
I'm not sure it's the right translation because I'm sing a french version.

In fact I've realized that my problem happens only when I'm using a loop from the logic library while when I import a loop from the hard drive I can use all the fonctions in the factory menu. Someone please help me ? Why I can't use factory menu from the logic loop library ?
    thanks

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

  • Can I have two Time Capsules in the same network, use one as Time Machine and other to expand network?

I need to purchase a divice to expand my Wi-fi network. I was looking at the AirPort Extreme, but a friend has a brand new Time Capsule for sale. So, for the same price of the AirPort Extreme, I´m getting the Time Capsule.
I already own one and using it as Time Machine and wireless router. If I decide to purchase another TC would it have any conflict with the one that I already have?
Is it possible to use one as Time Machine and wireless router and the other to just expand network and storage only (not as Time Machine)?

If I decide to purchase another TC would it have any conflict with the one that I already have?
    No
Is it possible to use one as Time Machine and wireless router and the other to just expand network and storage only (not as Time Machine)?
Yes. The important thing to remember is that the "extending" Time Capsule must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your "main" Time Capsule.

  • Backing up photos on iMac using external hard drive and time machine

How do i back up photos from my imac using an external hard drive and time machine
    Thanks in advance

Apple explains how to use Time Machine in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427.
Setting up and using TM is very simple to do, connect any external HD (format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using Disk Utility ) and your computer shoudl ask if you want to use that EHD for a Time Machine backup. If you have any questions visit your local Apple Store or reseller and they can answer how to setup and use TM and also should be able to offer suggestions on EHDs. My personal preference is OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro due to the build quality and OWC's level of support.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

  • I bought an external hard drive and now use it as time machine. I copied my photos to it. Can I now delete my iphotos?

My photo library is full. I bought an external hard drive and am using it as time machine. I copied my photo library to the external hard drive and burned all of my pictures onto DVD's. If I delete my photos from my computer, will the photos still be on the external hard drive and saved in time machine? I am parinoid about losing my photos (memories).

I think you mean Your Hard Disc is Full as opposed to iPhoto.

With regard to your iPhoto Library... you can Move it to another External Drive and use it from there and then you can use TM to Backup that Drive as well as as your Mac.
    1)  Move iPhoto Library to External Drive
See  >  iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
First... Make sure the EHD is Formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)...
Format, Erase, or Reformat a drive
    Quit iPhoto if open.
Open your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.
Drag the iPhoto Library to the External Hard Drive.
To Use iPhoto on an External Drive...
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything.

  • My external hard drive for backup and Time Machine is full.  I bought a new HD.  Can I just begin using it, or must I transfer old BkUp and TM to the new HD?

My external hard drive for Back Up and Time Machine is full.  I bought a new HD.  Can I just begin using it and rely on the old HD for past Time Machine versions, or must I transfer the old Back Up and Time Machine files to the new HD?

    It is your choice.
If you don't want to be able to far back into the time slots covered by the old disk then just start using the new disk.
If you want to retain the ability to go back into those time slots then copy it.

I performed a time machine backup without plugging my labtop into a power source. My computer died and all the settings were changed, ie the clock and date were changed back to 2001. So I tried to restore my computer using a previous time machine backup. (which I now know was wrong). However, when time machine tried to restore it said there was not enough room to do a backup. It seems that it did a half backup because some essential  files such as system profiler are now missing. Can I undo this restore...? What can I do to fix this

  • Aperture, File Vault, and Time Machine used together?

I am interested to know if I could setup a system to run like this:
    1. Create a user account with File Vault turned on
    2. Use Aperture inside the File Vault protected profile, thus the Aperture Library is encrypted
    3. Plug in an external drive and use Time Machine as normal.
I have heard that in order to use Time Machine and Aperture that one must tell Time Machine to NOT backup the Aperture library. However, if File Vault is used doesn't Time Machine only backup the encrypted volume upon logout?
Can anyone foresee this causing problems? Thanks!

Time Machine and File Vault aren't a particularly good combination.

  • Am I able to use both Carbonite and Time Machine as back-ups for my iMac?

    HI,
I have a iMac, and I have recently recently completed the initial back up for Carbonite. I also have a 2TB Seagate external hard drive that I would like to use with Time Machine. I am wondering if I am able to use both Carbonite and Time Machine simultaneously.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
As bdmarsha says, yes, you can run both simultaneously.
But one caution; there are some reports here that some of the online backup apps keep some fairly large, frequently-changing files on your system. Time Machine will back them up along with everything else, which can take some extra time and space on your TM drive.
After your initial TM backup, see how large the incremental backups are (by watching the progress bar and info on the +Time Machine Preferences+ window). If those seem too large for the changes you've made since the previous backup, see #A2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a couple of apps that will show exactly what was backed-up.
If you find such things, you can exclude them from TM backups, per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
