Using Cisco VPN cannot find local SMB shares

I'm trying to help a colleague get remote VPN access to our office. I have a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air which work fine. I gave my colleague a step-by-step how to and he seems to have followed it correctly. He can connect using the VPN connection just fine. However, when he goes to connect to our SMB server, he gets an error saying the server is not found.
I told him to try it using the IP address of the server on our local LAN and he says he gets the same error dialog.
Both the DNS name and the IP address work fine for me on both of my machines.
I need ideas of what else to check in his Mac configuration that might be the cause of this failure. Alturnatively, is there a way to "dump" his settings to a text file or something that I can compare to mine to give me a clue?

Thank you, fupin
Sabrina's suggestion to edit the pbk file worked. I changed the setting from 1 to 0 and connected to the remote network via the VPN and am still able to access the local DFS shares.
As per the OPs comments, the username and password I am using for the remote network are both different from the credentials I am using on the local network.
... take the steps in the KB 822707 to resolve it:
1). Locate the .pbk file that contains the entry that you dial. To do so, click Start, click Search, type *.pbk in the All or part of the file name box, and then
click Search.
2). Open the file in Notepad.
3). Locate the following entry: UseRasCredentials=1
4). Modify the entry to the following: UseRasCredentials=0
5). On the File menu, click Save, and the click Exit.
Cheers!

  • Problem accessing company resources remotely using Cisco VPN Client

I connect to my company's network remotely using Cisco VPN client both from a PC (v 4.0.1) and from a MacBook Pro (v 4.9.00)(same configs), and use Remote Desktop to connect to my work computer, and now i'm able to use Citrix to run applications on the company server.
The problem occurs on the Mac when I'm connecting from a location that uses the same private domain IP as our company's private domain. Our company's private domain is 192.168.1.x, so when I'm using the Mac on a WiFi router that happens to be set to 192.168.1.1, the Mac can connect using VPN but the remote desktop cannot connect to my work computer. Presumably, the Mac doesn't "know" that I'm trying to go through the VPN for the connection and not connect to something locally.
This problem seems to be unique to the Mac. Every Windows machine with the same client installed has no problems no matter what WiFi I've tried. The Mac works fine on any WiFi that is not 192.168.1.x.
However, since 192.168.1.x is very common (hotels, airports, etc., its a major problem with the Mac.
    Suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Also, now that we're moving to Citrix, our administrator has created a webpage on the intranet that we launch applications from, but the Mac cannot find that page when connected to VPN from 192.168.1.x. Same problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I presume you have split-tunneling activated.
    1. Make sure the 192.168.1.x is on the protected networks and on the MacBook client, disable "Allow local LAN access"
    2. Create a separate group for the Mac users and assgn them a different pool (192.168.100.x )and advertise it in your company to point to the VPN Concentrator.
    3. Use the NAT feature on your VPN concentrator.
    If this helped, please rate.
    Regards,
    Daniel

  • Tunneling using Cisco VPN Client 4.9

    Hello,
in recent times I used the Cisco VPN Client 4.7 with no problems:
    1. I installed the software
    2. I started "Internet Connect.app", created a VPN connection (PPTP) with no entries
    3. created a new network connection ("Tunnel to company"), with ETH and VPN (PPTP) enabled
    4. the ethernet interface points at the local router wich is connected to my ISP
    5. DHCP-Client-ID: our.company.de, DNS-Server: no entry, Domain-Names: our.company.de
    6. Proxies: our companies proxies
    7. the VPN (PPTP) interface is configuered as PPP, DNS-Server: our companies server IPs, Domain-Names: no entries, Proxy: no entries
    8. Starting the Cisco VPN Client I configuered an new session, connected, ok
As said, this was in the old days.
Now using Cisco VPN Client 4.9 on a MacBookPro (Intel) this works also with one exception:
I can establish a network connection (ping, smb, AFP, intranet/HTTP) only using the companies fully qualified domain name, e.g.:
    1. ping server1: unable to resolve name
    2. ping server1.our.company.de: works as exspected
I am using Cisco VPN Client 4.9.00 (0050), Mac OS X 4.8 with all available updates.
    Any help would be appreciated

    ...
trying the same (without the "Internet Config.app" / VPN PPTP) using VPN Tracker works fine. But I don´t want to spend Euro 79.-...

  • I have 10.8.3 installed. I use Cisco VPN but this hangs after 57 minutes and 35 seconds. I disconnect but can't reconnect straight away but have to wait about 10 minutes then have another 57 minutes

I use a mac with 10.8.3 installed. I use Cisco VPN & citrix receiver to connect to work via my home wireless which connects & works brilliantly but then hangs after 57 minutes and about 35 seconds. I disconnect but can't reconnect straight away although it goes through the motions but doesn't find a connection. I have to wait about 10 minutes (or restart the MAC) then it connects fine again and I have another 57 minutes. I previously used 10.6 for a while without any problems and then the VPN just stopped connecting? after trying to resolve without success I upgraded the OS hoping that this might fix the issue which it has but created this other problem! I can live with it but thought there may be some way to correct this surely.  I'm not heavily technically minded and have read reports about the racoon service may be causing this but not sure how you do this very simply step by step
Thank you for any ideas you can give

You have the latest version (CC 2014.1 or 2014.1.1) in which the interface condenses Design View with Live View buttons in normal layouts.  See screenshot.
However, in FGLayouts, Live View is the only option which poses some editing problems and has been highly criticized.
Is there any way to display the Design View in fluid grid pages?

  • Cannot access local DFS shares while VPN is active

    Hi
We use Windows Server 2008 Standard as a domain controller. It also hosts DFS. Although the namespaces are hosted on the server, the data is stored on a Windows 2008 Storage Server. We do not use DFS replication.
I have several DFS shares mapped on my Windows 7 client, which has just replaced my XP client, and can access them without any problems.
However, as soon as I connect to a remote network (located on a different domain - it has nothing to do with our network at all), I am unable to access our DFS shares. If I try to access a DFS share an error message pops up stating:
    Location is not available
Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
The first time I connected the VPN a network dialog popped up asking what type of network it was and I chose Work. After connecting via the VPN I use remote desktop to carry out daily maintenance on a server on the remote network.
Other local resources are available. I can ping machines via IP, name and FQDN. I can access the same DFS shares using UNC paths. So, although I receive the error message described above when accessing AD-name.local-backslash-share-name1 I have no trouble
    accessing server-name-backslash-share-name1
As soon as I close the VPN connection normal functionality is restored and I can again access the DFS shares without any problems.
Can someone help me fix this, please? When this was setup on my XP machine I never experienced this problem.
Also, is there a way of typing LAN addresses without the forum software converting them to a customised hyperlink? Thanks!

    Thank you, fupin

  • Cannot save to SMB shares in Pages

This issue is actually occurring ONLY in the iWork applications, Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
User recently upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.1.  Has two SMB shares to smb://servername called "Public" and "Company Name".
The two locations are available in Finder as typical network shares in the left-hand pane.  You can navigate the Shares, open files, etc. without any issues.
However, if I create a new file in Pages and type some text into the new file and attempt to save it to "Public" or "Company Name", I'm presented with the following error:
"Untitled" couldn't be moved because you don't have permission to access "Public".  To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.
When I do this, I see the information as "You have custom permissions" which typically indicates an NTFS or ACL related permissions that OSX can't quite read.
This same issue occurs whether i'm in Pages, Keynote or Numbers.
    Troubleshooting:
    1.  Checked and verified permissions were correct on Windows 2003 server hosting the SMB shares;
    2.  Created new file in TextEdit and attempted to save it to "Public" and "Company Name".  File save was successful.
    3.  Created new user on machine and logged in and performed steps above with Pages, Keynote and Numbers.  Ran into the exact same error.
    4.  Disconnected the shares and reconnected to the server using domain administrator account.  Same issues occur regardless ONLY in the iWorks applications.  Permissions are fine for navigating location, opening files and saving in any application outside of iWorks.
For now, I have the user performing the following steps:
    1. Create new document in Pages, Keynote or Numbers.  Edit the document.  Save it to the local drive in Documents\Need to Save
    2. Within Finder, user goes to Documents\Need to Save and drags the files that need to be on the network to the appropriate location, "Public" or "Company Name".
I'm almost thinking I need to remove and reinstall the iWork suite applications.  However, I don't want to perform that step without checking here.
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.  Thank you!

    Peter,
In working with the client, we did find that we could create new documents in the various iWork '09 applications and save them to the SMB shares without any issues.  However, since 5.0 Pages, for now, is installed, all applications have been created in 5.0.1, which is the current version on the App Store, and therefore, cannot be opened in Pages '09.  When we open Pages '09, we're prompted to upgrade to Pages 5.0.  Therefore, we look to still have the issue in saving to SMB shares through the iWorks applications regardless.  Especially since the client cannot access any of the current documents in iWorks '09 applications as they were created in the newer application.
Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!
    Jeff

  • Preventing mac osx users from using cisco vpn

    Hi,
I have setup ASA to act as our vpn server with radius as my authentication server. Users use the cisco vpn client utility to vpn in which has the .pcf file. This .pcf file has the group password, name and so on. Some users went online and found websites to decrypt the group password and have used that on their local macs to vpn in.
That irritates me and i want to know how i can prevent them from logging on. Are there any ways to block by os type within ASA?
    Please help!!
    thanks

thanks i set it up to get 2 syslog messages: 713120 and 713904.
    <165>Feb 09 2012 06:48:56: %ASA-5-713120: Group = vpnaccess-xyz123, Username = xyzcompany\jdoe, IP = 10.10.10.10, PHASE 2 COMPLETED (msgid=xxxxxx).
Which is good, now i know who is connected to my vpn and i get an alert, but i also want to know they type of OS they are using. When i do a lookup of syslog message id: 713904, that is suppose to give me the OS type (ex: winnt mac ox and so on), but i am not getting that.
Any reason why i dont get an alert from message id 713904, but i get one from 713120.
    thanks

  • Error while using custom xslt: Cannot find the script or external object that implements prefix 'ScriptNS0'.

    Hi,
We had a complex map. Because of some requirement, we used custom xslt on this map. Somehow at runtime that custom xslt is giving below error:
Cannot find the script or external object that implements prefix 'ScriptNS0'.
I checked below links, it seems this is a bug in Biztalk 2010/Visual stuio 2010.
    http://sandroaspbiztalkblog.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/biztalk-mapper-patterns-calling-an-external-assembly-from-custom-xslt-in-biztalk-server-2010/
The above link suggest to add a xml element in the .btm file. I tried that as well but no luck. Can anyone suggest me reason and solution for this?
    Thanks, Girish R. Patil.

When using the Custom XSLT option, you have to maintain the Extension Xml yourself, just as you would for inline custom Xslt that calls external Assemblies.

  • Cannot connect to smb share - no error or time out, just keeps going

I searched the forum but could not find a solution.
We have a file server running on a Windows Server 2008. We have several MacBooks with snow leopard installed and the same config. Recently one stopped connecting to the shared drives. It does not provide any error. It just sits at the connecting dialog for as long as you leave it open with no progress. Does anyone know a solution to this? You can ping the file share box. It still works just fine on all other macs.

Try following the step I posted in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2140745&tstart=0
And let me know if that helps.
If it doesn't try connecting via IP to your SMB share
    Open Finder
Choose "Go" and connect to server
type sb://<ipaddress of the machine you are trying to get to/
And see if it comes up.

  • Cisco VPN Client - Connects but no shares

My Windows IT folks configured Cisco VPN Client 4.9.0.1 (0100) on both the XP and Mac side of my MacBook Pro.
Authentication works fine from both sides but none of the shared drives or folders mount on the Mac side. They do mount via Windows Explorer from the XP side. The configurations are exactly the same.
From the Mac side using Terminal I am able to ping the various shared drives on the company server. How can I get them to mount.

  • Using Cisco VPN client certificate for built in IPSec?

    Hi,
Does anybody know if it is possible to "convert" a certificate exported from Cisco VPN client and import it into the Keychain for using it with built-in IPSec in Snow Leopard?
    Thanks,
    Oli

I too am having trouble importing the Cisco certificate. It would be nice for some clear documentation. We've been successful converting the x.509 cer to KPCS#7 using openssl which will import into the keychain. However, the VPN (Cisco IPSec) sill doesn't see it.
