Using Citrix Software Anywhere in OS X to run MS programs?
I will be starting a grad program this Fall and need to purchase a new computer. A few of the programs I will be using are Windows-only programs like MS Access. I've been weighing the pros and cons of the various ways to run Windows on a Mac or just purchasing a Windows machine, but I just found out about a program offered by my grad school called Citrix Software Anywhere that allows you to run programs from the university server on your personal computer via the browser - including the full MS Office suite. My question is: will a program like Access run through the browser in OS X even though Access isn't supported in OS X? I know that the Citrix software is supported on a Mac, but for all programs? Thanks so much!
Solutions such as Citrix basically allow you to take over a virtual "machine" on your university's server, a machine that is running Windows, so it doesn't matter what will and won't run on your Mac since you're not using your Mac to do anything other than view and control that Windows "system". As long as the software is installed on the server and made available to you, you should be able to run it.
Note that, of course, you won't have access to the software except when you can access that server. If you want the applications available to you at any time, whether or not you have a network connection, then you would need to run Windows on your Mac and load the software there.

I live on Puget Sound where most of us have boats and use electronic chart nav. software to navigate. The top software will only run on win7 or xp. Do I use bootcamp or some kind of virtual sofware and how do I load all this now that apple has stolen the dvd drive
I prefer using virtual machines for several reasons:
- Time machine backs up the virtual machine but not a bootcamp partition
- The virtual machine only takes up the room you need on the hard drive. Bootcamp uses a fixed size.
- VMWare and Parallels take care of the drivers.
- If you ever replace or upgrade your hard drive it is much easier with virtual machines. I have used Carbon Copy Cloner several times to increase the size of the hard disk.
- You can also use migration assistant to transfer the program and the virtual machine to a new computer without having to reinstall. -
I have an Airport Express that I am trying to use connected by ethernet to my iMac G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. I need to update the Airport Express softwart in order to use security option WPA2 Personal to connect to the internet through my Airport Extreme. I currently have Airport Express software version 5.6.1. How can I update this software? (I can connect directly to my Airport Extreme by ethernet and download the update that way). Is a later version of A E software available for download anywhere? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I need to connect to my work PC remotely from my macbook. I think I need the citrix software. But which version and what is the procedure?
Probably don't need citrix software. Is you computer in the office on LAN? Also, is the office computer setup for remote access? If it's windows then its going to be running Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) natively. If it is in fact RDP that your windows machine at work is using then you need to download RDC for mac. I use it to connect to my work computer using RDP (don't tell the "Info Tech" dude at my office) and if your not too tech savvy I would suggest trying GOTOMYPC. It's alot easier to setup. But if you have experience in setting up remote access and your Windows office machine is connected through LAN and your IT TECH has allowed port forwarding then you should be just fine with RDP and it's free!!! But are you logging onto your actual computer at work or logging into the "SERVER" through your work machine... believe me it's two completely different things.
Basically, you'll need:
1. Physichal IP address of work computer. (If office computer is on WIFI this won't work) use IPCONFIG commands in command prompt
2. Port forwarding needs to be enabled by your IT Tech
3. Remote Desktop settings will need to be enabled on the office computer
4. Download RDC for mac (search google)
5. Type the physical IP address into RDC and hit connect... type in credentials and your all done.
We need lots more details though... there are many ways to connect remotely and if your office already has a system in place for remote access then any details would be helpful in determining which method will suit you best. If it's citrix just have your IT dude set it up. If you think you need citrix then good luck.... -
UCCX 8.5 Silent Monitoring using Citrix deployment
Hi all,
We are currently testing a citrix deployment in our contact centre and are looking to ensure we haven't lost any of the current functionality available to our managers when using a PC.
Unfortunately it would appear that silent monitoring doesn't work when using citrix - the option in CSD is greyed out
Does anyone have any experience of a citrix deployment and whether or not this functionality is supported on citrix?

The default mode (Desktop Monitoring) requires that CAD can 'see' the stream to/from the phone. The phone/PC must be daisy chained and configured appropriately.
Typically in Citrix your server is remote, and CAD software running on the Citrix server is nowhere near the phone.
The only option you have for this is to set up SPAN/RSPAN on your switches to mirror traffic to the UCCX server. This was the server-side services sniff the traffic for recording/monitoring purposes. It can be tricky to set up, especially if you have a WAN deployment...

PrE 7 Installation Corrupts Accuracy of Synching when Using Visionary Software

HERE'S ONE THAT WILL DEFINITELY BE A CHALLENGE FOR SOMEONE WHO THINKS THEY KNOW WHAT'S "UNDER THE HOOD"!!!!
We do video strictly for use by attorneys in legal cases. In addition to standard editing, we need to provide them with files that literally synchronize the text from the transcript with the video (the video is first encoded to MPEG1). There are a number of programs that do this, and the one we use is "Visionary" (Visionary Legal Technologies).
As other such programs do, Visionary uses voice recognition to align the audio from the MPEG1 file with the transcript.
For very basic standard editing of depositions, only because of the ease of use (as well as some of the features that are conducive), we previously used Pinnacle (Avid's basic version, such as Elements is Adobe's basic version of the Pro). There was no problem, and everything functioned normally, other than a few minor glitches with Pinnacle (one being occasional audio/video synch issues when burning). For that and a couple of other reasons, I felt like Elements would be a more solid foundation for editing, and would solve the synch and other issues.
HOWEVER......, something occurs when installing Elements, that has to do with it modifying the standard Windows (XP) codecs. Visionary absolutely REQUIRES ALL of the EXACT STANDARD Windows codecs (MediaPlayer, Media Encoder, etc.). There cannot be one single change, update, or anything whatsoever done to alter ANY of these. Period!!
Honestly, I didn't connect the dots at first, but for some reason, Visionary became inaccurate in its voice recognition. It started out fine as usual, but as each 1 to 2 hour long MPEG1 video file progressed forward (from the beginning toward the end), the audio gradually became more and more out of synch with the text in the transcript.
After a ton of time, it was determined that the installation of Elements 7 was definitely the culprit. It did something, such as replacing some of the standard Windows codecs, that was positively, without question, the very cause of this problem! Uninstalling Elements did not even fix this, but, interestingly (and luckily) when rolling back the WindowsXP registry (restoring to a date prior to the Adobe install), Visionary went back to working just fine!!
This may imply that the codecs or whatever other files may not have actully been completely overwritten (theoretically, a restore couldn't bring back erased files!), but alternatively, somehow did cause the entire OS to default to the files that Adobe replaced (or at least added), and in the process, rendered the original files/codecs as obsolete.
So, the question becomes; how can we have both Adobe Pre-Elements and Visionary on the same computer without having even the SLIGHTEST effect on ANY of the original Windows files/codecs that MUST remain completely unchanged from their original form in order for Visionary to work?
In other words, it's fully understandable that Adobe may say that whatever they're doing to the system shouldn't affect any of this, and what they're putting in is "better" for all applications than what is furnished by Windows, but unfortunately, that is not the case!
Whoever can resolve this quickly so Visionary can work as it's designed and still have Elements on the same machine without it touching anything whatsoever that Visioniary needs, I'll buy dinner!!!!

The anwer to your question is yes, after uninstalling and rolling back the registry, it did put Visionary back to working properly. That's why this is confusing. Maybe I'm slightly off track with the assumption of what it did, but we know for a fact that the install sure did do "something"!
You seem to have a finger on that pulse, so, do you have any other ideas about what could have changed to cause this conflict that messes up Visionary, beside my speculation?
I was thinking, that, if there were only some way to install PrE7 on a separate drive, without it even touching anything at all anywhere in the OS folders, that would undoubtedly reslove it, because it wouldn't exist or alter anything in the machine at all. Obviously from the limited mid-level knowledge I possess, I've never imagined that such would be possible with any Windows based program, but in theory, something on that order would at least do the trick. (As with most programs,I know, for various reasons, it definitely cannot be done that way for Visionary's software).
Ridiculous as it may sound, is there any possible wayto accomplish SOMETHING in that concept range? Of course, I appreciate your explanation, but if can lead to some sort of a work-around, that would be, by far, the best!

Echo detected when using skype software - can anyone help?

I've detected an echo when using skype software. This occurs through the computer of the person I'm speaking to, so that when they speak, an echo comes back to them half a second later. I'm wondering if the speakers and microphone on my laptop are located too close together and the microphone is retransmitting sound from the speakers? My laptop is an HP mini 110.
Is there anything I can alter through my audio settings to stop this happening?
Any advice is appreciated!I have a Mini 110 that performs beautifully with Skype (no echo, etc). I have two other HP systems that don't do anywhere near as well. I did tweak the graphics card on mine, which tremendously improved the video. However...we are talking sound here, so I'll list the settings on my 110 for you to compare to yours:
I'm sure you already know how to find the settings, but...in Skype, do Tools>Audio Settings
Microphone: set at about 45% with Automatically adjust microphone settings checked
Speakers: set at about 75% with Automatically adjust speaker settings checked

Macbook OSX 10.5.8, iPhoto 8.1.2. I just tried to import some photos using Nikon software (View NX2) for the first time. When I next looked into iPhoto it was empty (so was iTunes but that's another story). I had backed up photos fairly recently but don't use time machine. Searched in vain everywhere and must have done something wrong because iPhoto wouldn't then open at all, saying it was unreadable. After a lot more attempts to recover I uninstalled iPhoto and the receipts and reinstalled from my original disc. It seemed to be ok and imported some photos from my iphone but as soon as the import is complete iPhoto crashes and when opened again it is empty. Have tried this several times and have shut down and have tried rebuilding with the alt and cmd buttons but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?
not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

Mac Pro 2.66 ghz Quad Xeon Freezing when I use any software
Can Anyone Help me, I have a serious freezing issue with My Mac Pro, Everytime I use any software it just Freezes on my ie IDVD, I tried Instaling a new OS System, and repalaced a new Hardrive but with no joy, I'm Guessing its the graphic card now but I dont want to waste anymore money until I'm sure.

What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one. -
Hello, I am getting a Kern Protection failure error message when trying to start up my Olympus DSS Player dictation software. I have been using the software without issue for years until last month. We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?
The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used. Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash. If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first. Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc. -

I'm using a Mac. I "upgraded" to LR5 from LR4. I do not want to be a member of the "Creative Cloud". I just want to use the software I purchased, specifically to upload to my SmugMug account.
