Using Classic Software OS 9
Hi. New Mac user and I am having a problem with a particular software program. I installed Sound Bridge 3.0 for Alesis DMPro drum module and it says I needed "classic" OS 9 or later...so I downloaded the newest version of classic off Apple's website but I can't get it to open/work. Every time I try, it says it can't find "No Classic System folder". But it's in my Applications. Do I need to drag that program into my sytem files before it will work? Very confused here. Please help. Just beginning on Mac OS... Any help is greatly appreciated!!

PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Thanks for the quick reply! OK, so I put the classic folder in my Mac HD and it is actually showing in my System Prefs under the System folder. It's also on my menubar. Furthermore, I can go into the Classic folder, click the icon, and the small apple turns into the multicolored classic symbol on the left hand corner of my menu bar. But, it does not launch if I try from the menubar. If I do that, it says "Classic cannot find an OS 9 system folder on the startup disk to use". And if I try to launch from the classic icon in System Prefs under System, it says "No Classic Folder". You can see the Macintosh HD but it is grayed out where you can't click on it. Should I maybe uninstall and try again? Thanks in advance for the help. It's really frustrating learning a new system. But I can tell already I'm glad I made the switch. Just don't know what I'm doing yet.

Upload System folder to use Classic in OS 10.4.6?
Hello, I have recently upgraded my old iMacs (400MHz & 500 MHz) to OS 10.4.6 and they both seem to run fine, except one thing, they don't have Classic. I have Classic ablility on my iBook G4 which uses OS 10.3.7.
My question is there anyway to just download the "system folder" that Classic uses in my OS 10.3.7 and upload it onto both the computers in order to use CLassic?
This is important since I am going to by upgraded the two iBook to OS 10.4.6 and that would be great to have Classic without trying to install OS 9 then OS 10.4.6, to just use Classic, and that opens up another can of worms when trying to back up the new address book and emails, etc. But I hope there is a way. Help if you can, thanks.I'm not sure if this is a "big discovery" or not but I actually did copy the system folder and applications (Mac OS 9) from my iBook G4 running OS 10.3.7 to my iMac G3 running OS 10.4.6. I buurned it onto a CD and to my amazement it works!
I went into Classic in preferences and it found the Macintosh HD (I had restarted a few times, while going through to each step)
I put the system folder and application of OS 9 in to the Macintosh HD just like they were on my iBook.
When it was in Classic and it found the folder, I started it up, it said something about needing to update the folder, and it wouldn't affect boot folder (or something of that nature), so I clicked OK and it started up and I was running Classic.
That is only the half of it. And I had called up a person in Tech Support at Apple earlier in the day and they told me I would need to "Install" off the original 2nd CD (additional software)and that would give me Classic. But I bypassed that and just took the folder from my iBook and put it onto OS 10.4.6.
I restarted.
The whole reason for me doing this stuff with classic was to be able to use my mother's "Mail" application (Outlook Express 5.02) and get her emails and address book back with all of her "groupings" (she has like 10,000 email addresses).
So what I did from there was to get the copy I made of my mother's stuff (I had made a copy of Microsoft User Data, Contact Export, and the Mail application). I then proceeded to swap out the Microsoft User Data That I had on the new OS 10.4.6 with that folder from the OS 9.2.1 and put the old one in documents with the new one on the desktop.
I went to Classic in System Pref. and started it up.
I then went into the Identities folder in the Microsoft User Data (old one), Main Identity, then Messeges (outlook express file). Clicked on it and it said something like "rewriting strings" or something along those lines. It said something about starting up the email again and I ignored all of it because at this point I could see that I successfully got my mother's mail back in classic.
I looked and saw that her address book was there with all her groups. (I should note that I already knew the mail would work because I checked by uploading the same files/folders onto my iBook with Classic's help).
But now I had an operational mail off of my iBook and back onto my mother's computer.
I then decided to press my luck and see if the computer could boot off the OS 9 system folder. I went into Start Up Disk in System Pref. and sure enough OS 10.4.6 was there along with the new OS 9.2.2 system folder. Hmm, should I try it will it work? The guy online I think said it wouldn't work and the "pot-head" guy in Apple Tech Support (he did sound stoned) said I won't be able to do any of this. F*ck it.
I restarted on OS 9.2.2.
It actually booted up and I was on the desktop and I went to see if I could actually use Outlook on this desktop and clicked on it, there was an erroe that said I needed to copy the identities folder from Users:my name: basically just get the identities folder, and move it to the outlook express folder. I did so by copying (option key).
I went back to the outlook express, clicked on it and started it up. It worked, it works, just like it did originally (I should note I already had the Mail set up in OS 10.4.6 to our ISP and it is a POP account, it was set up before I tried any of this). I sent myself an email to anotherr account and it worked.
I had talked on the phone with tech support people for at least a couple of hours, coming to the conclusion that I had improperly backed-up my data (emails, etc.) on both (my iMac G3 was running OS 10.2.8 and OS 9.2.1 before I zeroed and formatted it to OS 10.4.6) OS 10.2.8 and OS 9.2.1 and since I didn't have Classic in OS 10.4.6 I coudn't look and see what had and would have to reinstall from the original install CDs then upgrade to 9.2.2 and then "upgrade" to OS 10.4.6 to even have a chance of seeing what I had; and even though I told them what files I had they couldn't tell me if it was correct. My mother was freaking out on me, I won't go into details but she was extremely upset with me. I felt horrible I couldn't even load the stuff from OS 10.2.8.
I thought I had failed and resigned that it was lost. Then a couple of days later I thought "hmm, I see that my comp has Classic I wonder if it would work if I uplloaded it onto my comp" I found out that both of the back ups I made worked, and that I could import the stuff I had in OS 10.2.8 into my Mail (1.3.9) on OS 10.3.7 on my iBook G4.
I am absolutely ecstatic about the fact that Classic works beyond the bounds of what you guys and everyone else said. I would have wasted a lot of time reinstalling all the OSs onto the computers just to have CLassic and now that I'm upgrading four Macs in my house to OS 10.4.6, I can now have classic without absolutely taking HOURS to upload the installers and do damage control. But thanks to you guys who helped and actually I still need help with exporting and importing messages and exporting my address book in OS 9 but now it is easier and alleviates future problems with other systems (I think ). Thanks anyway. -
Using the software update created problems
Ok so I bought Leopard and upgraded from Tiger, then updated using the software update. Now I have a whole bunch of problems. My Apple Works is now missing, the program is just gone. All my Adobe programs now give me the error of Incompatible with current OS or some Your Licensing is not working error. I have a whole load of Adobe programs that should be working, like Contribute CS 3 and Photo Shop and Illustrator and Designer and so on. All of which worked under the 4.11 and the 5.1 OSes but now no longer work. This isn't even touching on the elimination of the Classic environment which i have a lot of programs that will cost way too much money to buy again for the new OS.
Anybody know how to get back Apple Works and how to get the Adobe products running again?First set of problems, I had two software packaged programs go missing. Totally erased from the system. iWeb and Apple Works.
This would not happen after a software update, unless the directory got damaged somehow*:
http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
That would give the machine a difficult time trying to find files on the computer.
Next set of problems my external firewire drive stopped being seen from the system.
This most commonly happens if a Firewire hard drive does not have the proper firmware to be used with the operating system in question. This is one reason most people recommend dismounting and disconnecting all third party devices before applying updates. This used to be a more common problem with 10.3, but not out of the realm of experience of people with 10.5.
The next most common cause is the clock battery dying, but not quite dead. Replacing it can fix that problem as well.
I should say that my system consists of several computers networked together.
I would have completely disconnected the computers before applying the update.
I can take my external firewire back up time machine drives and connect them to a PC and see the data. But my macs do not even recognise them, they don't even show up when plugged in.
This is further evidence the firmware on the hard drive was not yet updated for compatibility with the operating system.
Third set of problems, all the apple install disks became unreadable by my system.
This can be commonly caused by a dying optical drive, or bad permissions on the system, or a dying clock battery.
Fourth set of problems, all the Adobe programs became un-useable and returned errors. Adobe has been working with me on this and have been far more helpful than Apple has been.
That's a case of corrupt files, or files which were migrated from another system. Migration that is done improperly from a PowerPC to an Intel system may create issues with powerpc plugins on an Intel Mac. If your hard drive got over 85% full and/or the directory was damaged for any reason (especially forced reboots), that can also trigger such a reaction during an update.
Fifth set of problems just recently discovered, all my stored movies, music and podcast in iTunes is gone.
This is usually due to a directory issue, but can also be a dying hard drive issue.
Sounds like you have multiple symptoms pointing towards a few common possible causes. Directory damage, and clock battery malfunctioning, and needing a better firmware on your Firewire hard drive case. Replacing the hard drive case with a compatible one is simple enough. http://www.macsales.com/ makes the right cases. I would not go with LaCie, Western Digital, or Seagate cases. Western Digital and Seagate internal hard drives are fine in of themselves. Replace the MyBook hard drive cases with http://www.macsales.com/ cases and same with the LaCies.
I have Apple TV and EYE TV and a Midi interface box attached to my G5 mac. My G5 is the one that lost Apple Works and iWeb.
Remove the Midi interface box. It may help things work better.
My systems have the super drive on them and I have virtual PC and Softwindows installed.
Softwindows barely works if at all under Classic, and VirtualPC only works with version 7.0.2 under Leopard. If you got an earlier version working under Leopard you were lucky. You really needed to migrate to a supported emulator under Leopard listed on my FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
It says you didn't research your options well enough before upgrading to Leopard. This has been well documented in the forums before this.
Booted up from the Norton disks and repaired disk.
This is the biggest flaw in your plans, which caused ALL your problems. Norton is not compatible with any version of Mac OS X. It eats directories for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Only Alsoft Disk Warrior is safe and only after a data recovery attempt with Prosoft Data Rescue II, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, or Boomerang's Boomerang. We have constantly harped on the forums here that Norton is damaging to data. This has been known about since Mac OS X came out. It has even been called "Norton Kevorkian" by some.
You can't blame Apple for this. Your lack of research and lack of asking in the right places at the right time led to your failures.

Anyone having trouble using Classic on 10.4.4 or 10.4.5?
I am running 10.4.3 when I upgraded to 10.4.4 Classic wont finish or even start booting up. I tried running disk warrior and apples disk repair and even a clean install. But nothing seemed to work so I reverted back to 10.4.3. I may be one of the few that still uses classic apps on occasion but its important for some things I do. Has anyone experienced trouble with Classic when using 10.4.5? Thank You
Hi Tmss519;
If by a clean install, which is no longer an alternative for OS X by the way, you mean an Erase & Install that would have remove all of OS9 folders since the first thing it does is erase the disk. So that might be part of your problem now. An installation of OS X no longer includes installing OS 9. You will have to installed it from the addititional software DVD. If during this process you reformated your hard drive and failed to tell to install the OS 9 drivers, you will have to format the drive again and this time tell it to install the OS 9 drivers if you wish to use "Classic".
I can say that "Classic" is still working for me on 10.4.5.

TA48312 where do you find OS 9.0 updates to use classic on G3, & G4?
where do you find OS 9.0 updates to use classic on G3, & G4?
OS 9 does not come as part of the OS X installation package. You will need to purchase an OS 9 installer CD. You will need OS 9.1 or higher. The likely sources for it would be eBay or macsales.com. However, if the particular Mac model you have does not boot OS 9, then you cannot use a standard OS 9 installer CD. You would instead need a special version of OS 9 that would have come as part of the Software Restore disks distributed with your computer when it was new. The last PowerMac G4 model that could boot OS 9 was the original Mirrored Drive Door (MDD) introduced in August 2002. That model required OS 9.2.2. If yours is a later model that cannot boot OS 9, then you will need to contact Apple about obtaining replacement CDs.

6220 classic - software update problems
I am trying to use the software updater to update the firmware on my 6220 classic, and although I am connected directly to my laptop via the supplied USB cable (and the phone is being correctly recognised) and have the mains charger plugged in (to ensure I'm not running on batteries only) the updater process is complaining that I might only be connected via a USB hub or keyboard or such like, and is therefore unable to download the update
This is clearly not the case - has anyone else had the same problem, and how might I get round it?
Thanks.I'm having this problem too with my 6220C. The installer gets half way through downloading and then says it's lost connection with my internet. When I press try again, it doesn't even attempt to start downloading and tells me to make sure i've plugged it into a proper usb slot. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the updater several times and the same thing happens every time. Very frustrating.

Macbook OSX 10.5.8, iPhoto 8.1.2. I just tried to import some photos using Nikon software (View NX2) for the first time. When I next looked into iPhoto it was empty (so was iTunes but that's another story). I had backed up photos fairly recently but don't use time machine. Searched in vain everywhere and must have done something wrong because iPhoto wouldn't then open at all, saying it was unreadable. After a lot more attempts to recover I uninstalled iPhoto and the receipts and reinstalled from my original disc. It seemed to be ok and imported some photos from my iphone but as soon as the import is complete iPhoto crashes and when opened again it is empty. Have tried this several times and have shut down and have tried rebuilding with the alt and cmd buttons but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?
not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

Mac Pro 2.66 ghz Quad Xeon Freezing when I use any software
Can Anyone Help me, I have a serious freezing issue with My Mac Pro, Everytime I use any software it just Freezes on my ie IDVD, I tried Instaling a new OS System, and repalaced a new Hardrive but with no joy, I'm Guessing its the graphic card now but I dont want to waste anymore money until I'm sure.
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 SDRAM used to give me dual screen display until the right side failed so now I'm only using one screen, also everytime I'm displaying a video their are thin random lines and a bit of screen display distortions before it eventually freezes on me.
Please HelpMac Pro 1,1 (all Mac Pro models come with Xeon).
What matters is cleaning the X1900 of dust and from clogging intake and exhaust - every three months.
Run Apple Hardware Test from your OEM DVD.
Install SmcFanControl 2.x and keep the fans rpm to 800-900 instead of 499-599 base as minimum at least.
Monitor temperatures with Hardware Monitor or similar.
Have you been looking to see in System Profile: Memory if there are any errors?
Normally, clone backup update weekly and running Disk Warrior at the same time should be done to spot disk directory and file system problems before they get worse. Or any time your system freezes.
Freeze... and what you have 90% of the time is a corrupt directory and other errors.
At which time you may need to restore if you can't fix the problem. And don't rely on only Apple DU First Aid to find and repairs any and all errors.
For Snow Leopard maybe a flashed ATI 4870 to replace the X1900.
You may need to start over from scratch to get things stable once you find what is happening, and work with a test system until then with some trial and error. Format/initialize and clean install of 10.6.x for the OEM 10.4.7+.
At nearly 4 yrs now since it came out, not sure if you have plans for a new one. -

We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?
The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used. Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash. If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first. Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc. -
How can I use windows software on the IMac
How can I use windows software on my iMac? I know I can partition the hard drive but do I need to buy Windows OS?
You can use Boot Camp, which comes with your Mac and install a copy of Windows on a new partition, or you can use a virtual application like Parallels.

If I buy creative cloud student plan, can I use the software on multiple computers. I have 2 laptops for school.
Creative Cloud Help | Creative Cloud / Common Questions
Can I use the software I download from Creative Cloud on more than one machine?
Yes. Creative Cloud desktop applications can be downloaded and installed on multiple computers, regardless of operating system. However, activation is limited to two machines per individual associated with the membership. See the terms of use for more information. Learn how to deactivate a Creative Cloud license on a machine. -
I'm using a Mac. I "upgraded" to LR5 from LR4. I do not want to be a member of the "Creative Cloud". I just want to use the software I purchased, specifically to upload to my SmugMug account. Is there a way to use an add-on to do this? Aperture and LR4 were easy but I'm finding it impossible without subscribing to CC.
Sorry, maybe I don't understand, but why do you feel compelled to subscribe to CC if you already have a permanent Lightroom 5 licence?
For the SmugMug plugin, a simple Google search ("smugmug lightroom plugin") gives this link to download the plugin: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/121321
Another way is to click the button "Find more services online..." in the the Publish Service section of Lightroom, and to search for SmugMug in the Adobe Add-ons portal; you will find a link to the latest plugin: https://creative.adobe.com/addons/products/1755 -
I upgraded to IOS 7 and now I can't get my Hotmail account on my phone. When I type in all the information, I get "Unable to Verify Account Information". How do I get to use my Hotmail account using this software????
I have had the same problem as yours on my Ipad after upgraded Procreate 2.01. My iOS is 7.04. I tried to find solution from internet for weeks. Fortunately, the problem was resolved a few minutes ago. It is very simple,
1. Lunch outlook.com to confirm you can access hotmail mailbox. It means your account is Ok.
2. Go to setting>Mail,Contacts,Calendars.Delete your hotmail account from your device.(my device is Ipad)
3. Turn off your device, then turn on again.
4. Go to setting>Mail,Contacts,Calendars and create your hotmail account by tap outlook.com. Be sure the incoming mail server is pop3.live.com.
5. Waiting for validation.
That's all. Hope my experience is helpful. Good luck!

Problem using Toshiba Software Installer for Win 7 on Satellite L750-1MT
Hello!
I have problem using Toshiba Software Installer for Win 7 on Satellite L750-1MT (PSK30E-02T002B3) with no OS preinstalled.
I do the following:
1. Install Windows 7 x64, SP1.
2. Install LAN driver (device was not recognized by Windows 6) (downloaded from [http://se.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/supportMyProduct.do?service=SE&LNG=26&userAction=S MP_RESULTS_PAGE&partNumber=PSK30E-02T002B3&serialNumber=&USER_ACTION=Serial%20number])
3. Install all Windows Updates from Microsoft
4. Run Toshiba Software Installer for Win 7 - it installs a couple of drivers and then asks to reboot.
Here is the log file for the first try (win7update.log):
Update started 12\28\2011 at 21:11
Installed TVALZ_O.INF
Installed IO & Memory Access Driver
driver_bluetooth_TC00241200A.exe /s /log /test has been installed with the result code of PASS
util_tvap_TC00215000H.exe /s /log /test /wait15 has been installed with the result code of PASS
Update completed at 21:29
After reboot I run it again and the result is:
Update started 12\28\2011 at 21:38
Toshiba Bluetooth stack has already been installed.
Toshiba Value Added Package has already been installed.
Update completed at 21:40
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance! You are right this notebook model was delivered without OS.
Win7 64bit is supported for this notebook model and all necessary drivers, tools and utilities are available on Toshiba download page.
What I can say is that all this stuff must be installed in right install order. I know it sounds stupid now but I recommend you to make clean OS again and continue installation following this installation order:
