Using columns within Pages

Using Pages 5.2.2 (1877)
I want to edit a document so that the first few paragraphs are normal, ie use whole width of page, but thereafter all the text is in two columns [to describe two separate products] which I will be adding to at the start ie top of each column. I have tried inserting a Section Break but that seems to leap to the next page.

I do not believe that Pages v5.2.2 will get the job done for you. It has too many limitations that will waste inordinate amounts of your time.
When a Text Box fills with content, it will not automatically expand to accommodate that content. Instead, it displays an overflow + indicator at the bottom of the Text Box with truncated content. You would have to manually select this overflow indicator and pull it down to reveal the hidden, overflowed text.
If I layed out a partial page as I did previously with two Text Boxes within a single Text Box, and selected all of the Text Boxes, and then chose Arrange > Section Masters > Move Objects to Section Master. Then when you add a new page or section, the grouped Text Boxes are automatically placed on subsequent pages - just like a template. This gives a glimmer of hope, which might be realized if Pages v5.2.2 offered linked Text Boxes — which it doesn't. Even if one enabled Arrange > Section Masters > Make Master Objects Selectable, clicked in the right Text Box, and pasted a bunch of text, it would overflow and truncate on the first page, and then repeat itself in the same Text Box on the next page. This might not be the case with Pages ’09 v4.3 which permits Text Box linking.

How to use ShowValue within a UIX/JSP page to display an active link?

I am storing URL's in the DB and want to display them as active links on a UIX/JSP page. I thought that I had this working some time ago, but now it no longer works.
Using <bc4juix:RenderValue datasource="ds1" dataitem="myTextField" /> will display "http://www.otn.oracle.com" as an inactive link using UIX/XML which is expected.
Using <jbo:ShowValue datasource="ds1" dataitem="myTextField" /> will display an active link using if using BC4J/JSP, which is expected.
However, I have not been able to do this using a UIX/JSP page.
Is it possible to use ShowValue within a UIX/JSP page to display an active link?

Use column in 2d array as page number for 3d array

I have a 2D array coming from a database containing (I simplify a bit for this example)
column 0: plot number
column 1: x values
column 2: corresponding y values
to be able to process everything and later put it in a graph, i would like to convert it into a 3d array where the page number is the plot number (so column 0) from my original array. I tried two different approaches you can see in the attachment, both give unwanted results:
1. the resulting array contains two pages with only x2 and y2 for each plot
2. the resulting array contains two pages with only x1 and y1 for each plot
What am i doing wrong here?
As a second difficulty the order in the example 2d array is logical (x1 of plot 1, x1 of plot 2, x2 of plot1.....) .
The order in the actual array might just as well be as the example in the second attachment

Attached (LV 8.0) is something I quickly whipped up using the above 2 assumptions as being true. I did not fully test this, so be sure to put it through its paces.
Your solutions centered on using Insert Into Array. The reason this won't work is because your first x/y pair could be from plot 1 (the second page). But, you cannot insert a second page into an empty array. I opted for pre-creating the 3D array and then using Replace Array Subset.
OK, I posted this before I got the notification that you answered my questions. Given that, then how is one supposed to know the order of the X/Y pairs? Obviously, your example used strings for demonstration. Presumably the real values will be numbers. In this case, how is one supposed to know where to place the new X/Y pair?
Corollary: Arrays must be rectangular. This means that if plot 0 has 3 XY pairs, but plot 1 has 5, then the 3D array MUST have 5 rows for each page. This means you will have empty rows on page 0. Given this, you are better off creating an array of clusters. Each cluster would contain your XY pairs as a 2D array, and each one can have different number of rows, as shown in this figure:

Dynamically grow and wrap the column within the page

Hi All,
I have the situation where my xml includes a lot of cells (columns) but only about 5 cells (columns) can fit in a page with 8 1/2 in. Can i set up a form to dynamically wrap the table when it hit the maximum of width? Anyone have any idea about this. In the designer i only see the option to set row grow but not cell (column). Is this possible to dynamically grow the column.

Your only option would be to increase the width of a page. You could use a landscape page or simply make the width of the page as big as necessary.

Pages '09 does not seem to allow layout breaks in Textboxes.
Pages 5.2 has the same limitation.
Use multiple linked Textboxes in Pages '09 to get the layout you want or create your layout in a Word Processing template in the document layer.

How do you widen a column within a view

Farm is SP 2010, upgraded from MOSS (and in some cases, pages upgraded from SP 2003 to MOSS years ago). The pages in question below are using the SP 2010 visual interface.
I have a site admin who has been asked to widen a column within one of the AllItems.aspx views. Right now, the column is wrapping after about 13 or 14 characters.
The users asked the admin to widen it so it "never" wraps.
1. Is that possible?
2. If so, how would he do that?
3. If not, then how would he change it so that more characters are shown?
Additional info:
He tried to open the list in SharePoint Designer where he figured he might be able to figure out some way to modify things, but instead gets an error saying that the web part or control on the page could not be displayed because it is not registered
as safe. It goes on to tell him to contact the site admin (which is him) to have the web part or control configured as safe.
He has no idea how to do that - nor do I. In particular, as far as we are aware, this is a standard list web part. Seems like it should already be registered as safe.
Perhaps someone out there has already ran into this?

I think you can modify the width of the column using Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2007.
The steps below:
1.    Open the view in Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2007.
2.    In the "Design" window, right click anywhere on the body of the view.
3.    Select "Convert to XSLT Data View".
4.    Click once on the column title you wish to adjust.
5.    You should now be able to drag the column to the desired width.

Text to flow 1st column 1st page TO 1st column 2nd page - IS IT POSSIBLE?

Pages 2.0.1v2 en Mac OS X 10.4.7.
I would like to have a 2-column document, where the text flows independently within each column across the pages of the document. That is, when the text of the left column, first page, reaches the end of the first column, first page, I would like the text to flow to the beginning of the left column, page 2. Instead, Pages flows the text to the right column, page 1.
Is that possible.

I'm not a hundred percent sure that I understand you, but I'll take a stab at it. I think what you're asking for is text overflow from column 1 on page 1 to column 1 on page 2. And then the overflow from column 2 on page 1 to column 2 on page 2. Is that correct? If so, insert two independent text boxes on page 1 (make sure you use the Wrap Inspector to define them as Fixed on Page), and from them create linking text boxes on page two. I tested it and it seems to overflow nicely.
That's the good news. The bad news is that you'll have to do this manually for 400 pages, since there doesn't seem to be an automatic way to accomplish this. I even tried copying and pasting a linked box, and the resulting pasted box would unlink each time. So unless there's something I'm missing, it would seem that the process (tedious in your case) is to place two text boxes on page 1, then manually click on the blue "ears" to create the linked boxes for the next page. But I can't imagine you'd want to do this 400 times.

Adding JUST ONE CELL to a table within Pages

Hello,
I would like to add +just one cell+ to a table within "Pages" - but as far as I can see the program only offers to add whole lines or columns. (Within "MS Word", you have the possibility to "add cells" in a table - you can decide whether you want to shift the other cells downward or to the right.)
Do I miss something?

Maybe I should have said: Is there a function within Pages that is equivalent to the (very useful) one within Word. There isn't, I'm afraid.
Can I adjust only the size of one cell (with the mouse, by clicking on the vertical/horizontal line) without changing the size of the whole column/line? I guess that it should be working - I didn't manage to do it - might be kind of tricky.

How do I set up 2 columns within a page. That is full page, no column text above the columns and text below the columns?
I have made columns, and have the text above, how do I turn off or set the bottom border of the columns/

A Layout Break cuts all the way across the page. The content will divide between the columns as equally as possible. If you wish to manipulate the way content is apportioned between the columns in a layout, use Column Breaks.

Varying number of columns within same text box

One feature still missing (correct me if I am wrong) is to have number of columns applied to paragraphs not text boxes.
This is a constant hassal having to interupt the text box with a new text box and then another one after that just because you want a paragraph to be in muliple columns to save space for instance, or using some other work around like inline text boxes.
This is useful when trying to save space on a page, if you have short bullets, such as a list of items which if just left in a single column would leave a lot of white space to the right side of the column. Use this paragraph as an example. Pretend this is the lead in paragraph referring to the followng list. Include these items in your recycling:
-plastic bottles
-paper cups
-styrofoam
-tires
-fruit
-vegetables
-glass jars
-batteries
-cans
-drink boxes
-bones
-dairy products
-pet hair
-newspapers
-magazines
As you can see the list can get very long, and so breaking the list across a number of columns would really save space, as the bullets are just single words.
I have this situation everyday in the work I do and it is a real pain to have to redraw a new text box for each instance, and then another one to follow it.
And of course there is the whole headings that span multiple columns issue too.
I could forsee a feature where you would simply select the number of paragraphs and then change the number of columns. If it went to another page, then the number of comumns would still be applied as it is applied now to a text box.

However, we build the document (a book with hundreds of pages)
automatically, importing and autoflowing tagged text. Manual intervention
doesn't meet the need.
It's silly that a title or introduction should have to be in a different
frame from the rest of the text, just because the title/intro is
single-column and the text is multi-column. Ventura Publisher supported
paragraphs spanning columns 20 years ago. Adobe, get with the times!

If you need to make it go from 1 column into multiple columns in a layout
then it stands to reason that you also need the content to remain in the
multiple columns.
There are various ways to do this.
1. Using Tables: You can have as many columns and rows as you like. The con
about this is that tables cannot break over pages, so you have to manually
split the cell so that the content fits.
2. Use Tabs: This can be awkward if your text is already in a list format,
it involves cut and paste and isn't "that" easy to implement. If the text
is already in a layout format that suits then putting in tabs would work
fine. The advantage is that this can break easily over pages/columns etc.
It's flexible to adjust the spacing etc. But it can be awkward to setup,
especially if there is a long list that needs to be in 2 or columns...
so then you have this option:
3. Use an anchored text frame: If you cut the content from your text frame
and paste it into a new text frame: Then anchor the new text frame into the
layout. You can specify the amount of columns in the anchored text frame.
The frame will move with the text, but just like tables, they won't split
over pages.
I've used all 3 on many occasions depending on what scenario came up -
different layouts need different workarounds.
But they shouldn't be work arounds, it should be just select this text and
put it into x amount of columns, and it should all flow without having to
do much else.

How to use SelectOneRadio within a DataTable

I have a requirement to have a radio button for each row in the datatable. It is to enable selecting one row(only one row) from the table and proceed to the next page. The table should look like

Hi,
after some time probing into this issue I think none of the many proposed sollutions really solves the underlying problem: Working around the issue becomes much to complicated for JSFs stated design goal of easing development. Certainly for such a common case scenario no workaround should be neccessary, especially given the fact that JSTL is easily able to model this without the need for workarounds!
In my opinion JSF TagLib implementations should attempt to solve this in a coming version.
One part of the sollution might be to make <f:selectItem> search it's parent element recursively, i.e. allow the expected container element to be the nearest direct or indirect parent that's suitable. This would allow developers to envelope a <h:dataTable> tag with a <h:selectOneRadio> element. Any <f:selectItem> element inside would therefore be part of a single choice radio button selection, regardless of them being distributed over multiple rows or columns.
Another part of the sollution might be to allow <h:selectOneRadio> and similar tags to be substitutes for <h:column> tags inside tables. This way a complete column of radio buttons could be used to chose a single value, thereby allowing multiple columns of radio buttons to choose multiple values within the same table.
Please forward this suggestion for enhancement in kind to the expert group working on the further development of the JSF taglibs. I guess many people besides me already use it as a classical example of complications using JSF during lectures about the tomic, and at least in this case the problem seems completely solvable.

Split Columns Within a List

Hello,
I'm currently working on the questions page for a math textbook and have run into an impasse.
I'm trying to place a numbered list (which is a 3-split column) within another numbered list. However, I don't know how to do this. I'm attaching a screenshot.
Please note Questions 1-6. I am aiming to have the alphabetically numbered list sit on the same line as the numbered list. Both use paragraph styles which contain a list element, and not manual formatting with tabs, spaces, etc.

There could be other techiniques as well but this how I did :-
Define 2 paragraph style :-
Paraghraph style 1 :- Under the "Bullet and numbering" section, have the Numerir Numbering at Level 1.
                               Define the formatting you want for the Question 7, 8 and 9.
                               Also, under "Indent and spacing" define "Space After" value. --- This will bring the gap in the Numeric and Alphabetical section also gap between the paragraph.
Paragraph style 2 :- Under the "Bullet and numbering" section to have the Numeric Numbering at Level 2 , change the format to have "a,b,c,d"
                               Define the formatting of text as you want to appear for the number in these options.
                               Under "Span Column" , Define "Split column" , Sub Column" value to be 3 and specify the gutter space and other settings as required.
When you want to use the Numeric numbering , say for Question 1 , 2 , 7 , 8 and 9 use the Paragraph style 1.
Then Switch to Paragraph Style 2 and type the numbers, (no need to type the alphabet for bulleting, they will be automatically added)
After you have typed the Third number set Ex:- C) 23,235 , press "Num Enter"(Enter key on Num Pad) for Column break , this will move the content to the next split column.

My up and down arrows as well as page up and page down no longer work properly only when using firefox. Page up and down function more like the "home" and "end" keys as do the arrow keys.

Honestly I'm not sure if these began just after I updated FF to the current release, but it's been happening for at least 2 weeks. The arrow keys and page up and page down keys all work as if I'm pressing the 'home' and 'end' keys on my keyboard. This is only when using FF. Please contact me if you need more clarification.
