Using Compressor to make smallest possible files for transcriber

I asked a question related to this a few days ago on the FCP discussion. I thought it was answered, but now I ran into a new issue.
I shot on the AF100 and transcoded via Log and Tranfer to ProRes.
Now I need to make these clips as small as possible and, ideally, stamped with TC so that I can send them to my transcribers, all of whom are working on PCs.
I decided to use the H.264 codec that's customized for iPod because that seemed like it would make a very small file. I used the filters in compressor to stamp on TC. The result is beautiful- a 50 gig file down to 234megs with timcode stamped on it. The problem: it took all night to compress a one hour interview. I have 20 hours and the project needs to be submitted by the 15th of April.
Can anyone suggest a workflow that will be faster? I am thinking of going with just audio, but is it possible to get my TC stamped onto an audio file? Even if I can't get the TC stamped on, can I create an audio file of any of these following formats, which are the formats that my transcriber's software can read:
# WMV (Windows Media Video)
# RM (Real Video/Real Media)
# IVF (Indeo Video Format)
# MTS (Hi Def Video Format - AVCHD created by Digital Video Cameras)
# MPEG (Industry-Standard PC Video format)
# MPG (Industry-Standard PC Video format)
# VOB (Video Object files that are used on DVD movies and burned movie disks)
# MP4 (Compressed Video Standard used on PCs and IPODS)
# F4V (Flash MP4 video format)
# MOV (Apple Quicktime Movie format)
# FLV (Flash Video)
I know there's a template for AAC files in compressor -- is that a .mov format?
I know this is really basic but I'm really pressed for time right now and would really appreciate any input. The smaller the files come out the better (slow internet where I am in the world right now!) Thanks very much.

Hello,
You may want to read up on using a QuickCluster on your MacPro, which should help speed up the transcode process. A couple of questions:
Where is your source media stored?
Where are you setting your destinations to?
AAC is an audio format that carries a .acc extension. You can customize an h.264 preset to include AAC audio. I use a similar preset with timecode stamped clips.
In Compressor, you can create any number of destinations, which can also employ custom file name conventions. On my machine, I have a folder called "Compressor Destinations". Within that folder are other folders labeled for the kinds of files that I create. This structure helps sort files by types, which I then drag to their appropriate destinations once encoding has completed.
It sounds like you're on the right track, you just need to speed up the encoding process. Here are some links that I've found to be very useful with QClusters:

  • No audio when using Compressor to convert DVD .VOB files to Quicktime...

    Hello,
    From a previous post that I found, my understanding is that you can use Compressor to convert DVD .VOB files to quicktime files. I've tried this several different ways but I only get video and no audio. Is it possible to also get audio?
    Thanks!

    Hi:
    As far as I know, no way to make ANY conversion from a VOB file using Compressor.
    You can download MPEG Streamclip for free and extract the elementary streams from the VOB files . . . of course, you can do it from your own DVDs, not from commercial ones.

    Im having a problem with the dvd quality, I'm using compressor to convert the video fils from apple prores to mpeg2 .It doesn't matter how long my video is even if its just 5 minutes  I'm getting cut edges/lines  in the video specialy if i have titles it comes up really bad , I took the same video to a friend of mine who have PC and he uses Encore , did the encoding there and it was just fine no problems! BTW I tried using doferent setings in compressor from CBR and VBR I even pushed up the setings to 8 or 9 BR and still no luck !
    does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

    Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
    Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
    In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
    Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
    After rendering, export QT self contained.
    Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
    Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
    Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
    Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

  • Aperture cannot access this library" followed by "To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly."

    Hi,
    I am completely confused. I use aperture everyday and today when I tried to open it I got the following message " aperture cannot access this library" then it said to use this library , make sure its file permissions are set correctly"
    So i read a bunch of posts and opened aperture while holding down option and command and repaired the file permissions.  it did nothing, when I tried to open aperture I received the same message.   So then i tried opening it while holding down just the option key. This brought up all of my libraries but when I chose the library i use daily the same message came up.
    Does anyone know how to fix this and/ or why it is happening?
    Thank you

    No idea how to check the format, not familiar with Drobo products. Does the drive show up in Disk Utility? If so you should be able to see how it is formatted there.
    How long has this setup been in use?
    Aperture libraries have to be on locally connected drives formatted as OS Extended as per Apple (see Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture for example). While Aperture may work with other setups there is always the possibility that the library will become unusable at any point in time with no warning.
    Try to find out the format of the drive and post back. Maybe something can be done but from the error messages you are getting I'm thinking the best course of action will be to restore from backups onto a correctly formatted drive.

    So I cannot even access the application. It was working fine yesterday and today I get this error message:
    To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.
    I have changed nothing. All the pictures are there on the computer. Help?!

    Reboot.  Close any programs which open at start-up.  Run Disk Utility (you can type this in the Spotlight search field at the right end of your Menubar).
    In Disk Utility, select your drive from the list on the left, and click "Repair Disk Permissions".  This will take a few minutes, but should be less than ten.
    Reboot.
    Try to open your Library in Aperture.  What happens?

  • Can you make an exe file for a slide show using PS Elements?

    Although I use ProShow Gold for slide shows, I need information on other programs that can provide an option for an exe format. I am not too technical so I can't tell from my Elements and couldn't find anything here. I will be running a competition in which exe files are needed so they can be played on any computer. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

    I hope your competition goes well. I suggest though that you thoroughly scan each submitted file for virus and malware on an isolated machine first. While not suggesting your competitors would deliberately infect their entry but if their own machines were unknowingly infected by (say) a trojan that could potentially infect the executables they create for your competition.
    If it was me I'd request files in a standard format (e.g. WMV) that is readable by just about any media playing software such as Windows Media Player.

  • How to use Windows SIM to create answer files for 32-bit (x86) Windows 7 from a 64-bit (x86_64) Windows 7 PC?

    So I'm having the old 32-bit/64-bit compatibility issues with Windows SIM. I have a Windows 7 64-bit PC (actually a virtual machine) that I intend to use to run Windows SIM and make answer files for 32-bit Windows 7 unattended installations.
    I've installed the latest Windows ADK (the Win 8.1 one). When doing this there was no choice of download or prompt during installation regarding 32-bit or 64-bit architectures. Once installed the Windows Kits folder is under Program Files (x86), but imgmgr.exe
    is a 64-bit executable. When I try and generate the catalog for a 32 bit install.wim, I get an error that 64-bit SIM cannot catalog 32-bit images.
    Is there any way to install a version of Windows SIM on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC that can catalog 32-bit Windows 7 images?

    Hi,
    I think the biggest problem is the architecture specific in answer file:
    <settings pass="specialize">
            <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <OEMInformation>
    <Manufacturer>[ REPLACE WITH COMPANY NAME ]</Manufacturer>
    <SupportURL>[ REPLACE WITH SUPPORT WEBSITE ]</SupportURL>
    </OEMInformation>
            </component>
        </settings>
    The answer file must include processor-specific components. The answer-file settings in the windowsPE configuration pass must match the architecture type of the preinstallation environment. The settings that apply to the Windows image must match the architecture
    type of the image. For example, if you create an answer file that deploys 64-bit images from a 32-bit preinstallation environment, all components in the answer file for the windowsPE configuration pass must include the processor attribute type of x86. Settings
    to be applied in the specialize, oobeSystem, or other configuration passes must include the processor attribute type of amd64.

  • HT201372 used this to make a bootable copy for a new hard drive installation. copied the install find but gave error code 110 when making the disk bootable.. Any help in what this code is

    Used createinstallmedis to make a copy of the Mavericks app for use in a new hard drive install.. Copied find but gave error code 110 and failed to make the flash drive bootable.. Any help in what errror code means?

    Did you partition and format the flash drive first? See the following:
    Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
    After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
    Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
    Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
    You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
    Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
    Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

  • Aperture wont op "To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly." error when opening aperture 3.4.5 library.

    Have been using fine up until Wednesday this week and suddenly cannot open file at all.
    I have around 10K images on drive but file size for library says 0bytes. When I use Alt to open it shows file and shows correct number of versions and originals but then gives the  error re permissions when trying to open.
    Have tried the repaire permissions, repair database and rebuild database all give same error about permissions and fail to start.
    HELP!
    Regards
    James.

    I think I set it to keep the images in the library not referenced but the drive did contain many pictures before I started using Aperture so i need to bring them into the library.
    How large is your library now, and how much space can you afford for your Aperture library on your internal drive?
    Or do you have a second exernal drive, that you could format MacOS Extended (journaled) to be able to temporarily host your Aperture library?
    Do you need the "Tuxera NTFS" formatting on your external drive to share image files with other systems, or would it be an option to reformat that drive?
    If you are more comfortable with a managed ibrary, by all means keep the library managed. Only it needs to be on a drive formtated MacOS X Extended (Journaled). It could be your inernal drive, if you have enough space or a locally connected external drive. Connect it to the fastest port you have; Firewire, or Thnderbolt, a fast USB port.
    Move the library there, then import the images, that you now have in separate folders on your externa drive. To prevent Aperture from importing duplicates, enable the option "Do not import Duplicates" in the import panel. If you are lucky, Aperture will recognize many of the duplicates. if you have not changed the filenames.
    I have to sign off for the next couple of hours, but will look in later.

  • RTE, how to use it? Are there step by step instructions to make a runnable file for a SBC, load it and run it?

    How to use RTE? I need to run my CVI code on a SBC that has its OS on CompactFlash (CF). I have done the Build»Distributions command and made a cds file but don't know if I did it correctly. I have downloaded and installed CVI RTE on my desktop PC, but what to do next to get my CVI code on my SBC's CF? The CF has WindowsEmbedded and so it has the usual Windows folders. So what files do I load on the CF and where do they go?
    Help please! And thanks in advance!
    Solved!

    John,
    I dont know a huge amount about deploying to windows embedded targets, but I would assume you would just install the RTE like you would any other program, then throw the distribution wherever you like to run it from.

  • How to use FC to make a sub-component for Flex

    Most of the examples and tutorials I've seen so far assume you are creating the app itself in FC.
    However, what I need to do is create a custom component that will be a "screen" in a large Flex app, like a page in a Wizard.
    So if I was doing this without FC, I'd make a new mxml component in Flex, e.g. "WizardStep.mxml" and then in the main app,
    <mx:ViewStack>
         <h:WizardStep id="one" label="Step One" />
         <h:WizardStep id="two" label="Step Two" />
    </mx:ViewStack>
    For example, assuming I have set up the namespace "h" to like "com.handycam.*"
    How would I accomplish this scenario if "WizardStep" is what I have been building in FC?

    Thanks for your answer!
    Unfortunately it still doesn't work.
    In FC I used the file menu item "publish as swf" ( or however it's called in English -
    I'm also struggling with the -unwanted- German workspace terms). This generated
    the deploy-to-web and run-local folders. In Flex3, I imported haupt.swf (=main.swf)
    from the run-local folder.
    When I use the imported file in the Image tag with the
    loadForCompatibily attribute set to "true",the application compiles,
    opens the IE, the remaining LinkBar buttons are not affected - they
    show/run the Flash Pro .swfs and their controls,
    but the attempt to access the .swf in question produces:

    The alternative approach:

    produces:

    If I code the SWFLoader tag as:
    <mx:SWFLoader x="3" y="35" width="970" height="425" loadForCompatibility="true" source="

  • How to reduced PDF to its smallest possible size for Emails

    Hi I'm trying to send a PDF portfolio to prospective employees, however most emails can only send a file no larger than 10mb (which these days is a ridiculous size).
    I want to reduce the size of the PDF which is currently at roughly 17mb. I've used the reduce PDF size save option, but only reduces it by roughly 1mb. Is there any other method to really compress the data further??
    Cheers,
    Mattheus

    I agree with TSN. However, reducing the size it typically done with "Reduce PDF Size" or "PDF Optimize" in the Save As menu. If you have included a lot of scans, that is likely your problem. If I was receiving a package so large, I would be having 2nd thoughts about calling one in for an interview unless something stood out big time. It may be that you need to retype some things are such, possibly even reconsider what you include. To you, 10 MB may not seem like much, but to many folks (particularly those who would get a lot of resumes), that is a big file wasting their HDD space. You may disagree, but I am giving you a perspective that I believe many employers might have. Good luck in any case.
