Using Compressor To Render - Slower in 3?

I'm doing a new project in Motion 3 and I use Compressor to render the thing because I have a 16:9 custom setting in Compressor that I use. Is it my imagination, or is it rendering a lot slower?
I have a play range of about 1 minute rendering and it has taken 20 minutes to render half of it.
This is a simple project too - no video footage, animated text and shapes with some Photoshop TIFFs.
Thanks

no for me compressor is faster. Although i have had occasions when motion couldnt export to Compressor. it booted compressor up but then i just got the spinning pizza wheel of death. A re boot fixed it.
not much help to you except to confirm that there's something odd going on with your system. But then you probably already knew that

  • Best way from FCP using Compressor (too long render - 3 days?)

    Hi
What's best quality, most efficient way to get our 85 min documentary out of FCP 6 to an SD DVD master?
Using 2008 model Mac Pro 3.0, 8GB RAM, I'm going from FCP to Compressor, via QT movie (current settings Pro Res) of Timeline, bring it into Compressor = NTSC, 16x9, 2 pass VBR best, 6.5 to 7.6 bit rate, GOP = IBBP closed, size 15, Frame Controls ON, resize filter = BEST, De-interlace = fast, Rate Conversion = Good...
I did a 2 minute test and it took an hour! And that was for a web-friendly 480 x 270 size. What's it going to be at 720 x 405 (the 16 x 9 version) - 3 days? What to do? Should I print the timeline to tape and bring it to a post house and they can do better or what? I know if I turn frame controls to OFF it'll speed up significantly, but then the FONTS/Text especially when over Black BG look horrible after compressed to 720 x 405.
    Suggestions?
    K

This ain't going to help much, sorry. Give us a few more hours, maybe a day or two, one or more of the DVDSP wonks will stop by and offer better advice.
What's best quality, most efficient way to get our 85 min documentary out of FCP 6 to an SD DVD master? < </div>
The DVD will be MPEG2. Working in anything higher quality than that has questionable benefits, the ratio of increased processing time to improved results is completely one-sided, a waste of time.
Compression is a disappointing series of compromises unless you totally understand the process. You can spend a few hours researching articles by Jan Ozer to help you decide what your workflow should be. Me, I would export a self-contained movie out of FCP to a codec that would hold a reasonable amount of spatial rez before going to Compressor.
Exporting self-contained creates a new media file that requires no further handling or rendering which is probably holding you up now. Every frame is being recreated before it can be compressed. But I never use Compressor to create the MPEG2, I let DVDSP do that for me. This shortcut produces every bit of quality I need for my projects.
Your situation, apparently, is different. And there is no real shortcut for you except to research it and try to find a recipe that suits your expectations. But whatever you do, MPEG2 is going to be a real bummer, especailly if you are shrinking or scaling your large format image to letterbox or anamorphic.

  • Compressor long render times

Is it normal for Compressor 2 to take 12+ hours to render a 45 minute DVD? I'm exporting from FCP 5.0.4 to DVD Best Quality 90 minute 4:3. I started at 1:20 pm, and it said 4 hours. It's now almost 1:20 am, and it still has 45 minutes to go. It seemed to start quickly (it got up to 50% in like 30 minutes) but then slowed down a lot. Am I doing something wrong? I checked FCP and it's still running. I don't have any other CPU hogs open (only Safari, Adium, and of course Batch Monitor.) What can make my renders faster?

Yes, a faster computer would help
The new Intel Macs are great, but keep in mind that you need to need Final Cut Studio 5.1 or later, to be able to run it on Intel. I would recommend buying the upgrade for Final Cut Studio 2 when/if you are buying a new Mac.
David, are you sure Compressor works differently on untouched source footage, when using Export -> Using Compressor? I thought that only was relevant for effects, text/graphics. i.e. when working with DV, you get much better quality on text/graphics when sending your sequence directly to Compressor from FCP.
When Should You Export Directly to Compressor?
The advantage of exporting a sequence to Compressor directly from Final Cut Pro is that rendering happens as part of the transcoding process, potentially saving you time and eliminating unwanted artifacts. Compression and chapter markers in your Final Cut Pro sequence can be included in the resulting compressed media files. When imported into DVD Studio Pro, the chapter markers automatically appear in the Track Editor.
The disadvantage of this approach is that Final Cut Pro cannot be used for other tasks until the export is finished. Depending on the length of the movie, the format you are exporting to, and your computer’s capabilities, exporting can take a significant amount of time.

  • Poor result using Compressor

I need help. I use a Sony camera (HDR CX560) bought in US with NTSC as standard. I live in Europe and would like to burn a DVD for my Blue-Ray player showing it on my PAL TV.
    The footage is 1080i, 1920x1080, 29,97 fps.
I have tried several different ways of achieving good results, but with no luck:
    1. Editing in Final Cut Pro with original specs (1080i, 29,97). The result showing in FCP viewer is not perfect, but quite good. A little bit of stuttering and a bit blury pictures. I have tried "Send to Compressor...", selected MPEG-2 for DVD in Compressor (customized to 16:9 TV format). The process stops after a minute - a file is being created, but only the first 30 seconds of the movie is visible. I also tried Share>Export file using Compressor settings. The file created does not have acceptable quality, mostly bescause of very disturbing stripes. I also tried Share>Master file but the output is not good enough (using codec Apple ProRes422 (HQ) - same stripes.
    2. Editing in Final Cut Pro with european standard (1080i, 25i). The result in FCP viewer is good with one exception - a lot of stuttering images while panning. I tried all the output/share alternatives mentioned above, with poor result.
    I use OS X 10.8.3, Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8 and Compressor 4.0.7
    Can anyone help?

FCP is usually pretty bullet proof in handling formats – and most of the time letting it set the project properties is the best way.
From what you've said about the camera and the footage, you shouldn't encounter any potential problems until after you export and start the standards conversion.
Create another project. When the new project dialogue window appears, make sure the settings are set to automatic (video properties set by first clip). Take one of the 1080i 60 clips and edit it to the timeline to set those properties. Export that clip as a test. If it plays smoothly, and it should, proceed to delete the clip from the project and paste the problem sequence to the new project. Delete all project render files and event render files. Now export (don't bother to re-render).
    Post back with results.

  • Exporting using Compressor failed, and other awekward issues with FCP

Hi FCP gurus! I need your help!
Everytime I try to export using compressor, my submission fails.
I even try a sequence a exported as m2v on Monday, but today is not working.
Compressor will some times say "Unable to view preview, FCP is busy". When I press submit, it goes to Batch Processor but it either will immediately show FAILED or it will just not do any processing. When I quit and restart, then the submission appears as failed.
Also when exporting, FCP comes back with a pop message saying that 4 files went offline. When I try to reconnect them it says: "There are not clips selected that have files associated with them". So, why is FCP constantly not able to fine this files, if they are not been used?
I need to export a file for my soundtrack guy, and he needs MOV, preferable DV-PAL or Motion-JPEG or similar frame-based codecs. What are my options?
In any case, what the problem here is that I CANNOT export anything. What shall I do? I already restarted the computer twice, nothing.
I realized that I have files using in this project, saved in two different external harddrives, do you think this has anything to do with the issue?
    I am using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks so much in advance!

First off, fwiw, I never "send to compressor."  I export a self-contained QT movie, not a conversion.  Then I run that through compressor with the appropriate settings.  I like the self contained file, it becomes a master from which I can make all sorts of variations.  The only difference, in theory between self contained and reference, is that if for any reason you lose the render files the reference movie will not work.
    Q1 No.
    Q2 see above
Q3  There is no such thing as uncompressed.  It's just a different codec rather than a perfect copy of your timeline.
Q4 lots of reasons for making a conversion, but none of them are valid for making DVD's
Q5  Nothing wrong with letting DVDSP make the encoding-- just be sure to get into the preferences for DVDSP and set the destinations to a folder for the project, so you don't overwrite any other projects.  Depending on how long the project is, you can let it encode in the bg while you set up your project, build the buttons etc.  It's all the same encoding engine, whether is is done in compressor or dvdsp.   I find it much faster to use compressor then to take to dvdsp becaue you can use quickcluster.
Now a couple of questions for you:  what sort of footage are you using and what are your fcp sequence settings?

  • Help needed!!! Exporting using compressor

    Hi!
I´m exporting an animation using the option Export using compressor, since I have quite a few proyects to export. I do this in order to have a batch export. Everything goes all right, no errors or something strange, but whe i check the render file, the font that i´m using in the motion proyect has been substituted by another one.... WHY??????
    thanks!

yup, I can confirm this problem -- you can't use a font that's activated using something like Suitcase Fusion -- I've tried double clicking the font and installed it into fontbook, no joy. I moved the font into my font library (root) and still no joy.
I'm using a TTF -- should I be using an OTF or bitmap font? It's StartlingFont.

  • FCP render slow on new Mac pro?

New Macpro does not seem any faster than PPC Quad.
Today I had to render out a 2 hour 20 minute program to Apple TV codec and it took 3 hours.
The FCP window itself seems sluggish on Hide and launch.
I checked Activity monitor and it tells me CPU=180 Real Memory=252 and V Mem=1.73
I have no idea how to read an activity monitor- does the reading seem normal?
I am running on the latest Macpro 8 core 3.0 with 16 gigs of memory.
I was told this would be super fast.
Why doesn't FCP use more of the available memory?
I always hear people say- buy more memory, but it doesn't seem to be speeding things up.
    User error?

FCP is a 32 bit application and as such doesn't make use of anything over 2.5GB of ram. Once you add in the OS frameworks it really only can make use of 4GB total. Ram beyond 4GB is useful in Motion for RAM previews as well as running multiple applications but it isn't going to make FCP any faster.
If you want to speed up codec conversions use Compressor and learn how to set up virtual clusters. You can set up 4 in your machine and each will act as a singular instance of compressor all working together to speed things along.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Compressor 4 so slow...

    Hi :-)
Compressor 4 seems to be very slow, it only takes 6 - 9 percent of my computers processing power, according to activity monitor. Is there some sense in it which I don´t get?
    thanks

Thanks. I keep forgetting Qmaster is run out of System Preferences. Sorry to be so dumb about the general concept, though: I don't have other CPUs avail for clustering, so I guess none of this will help me anyways.
The thing that I don't get is that I'm reading about how fast these new versions are, but if I add a few effects to my work, it basically becomes unusable. Relatively short*,fully-rendered projects (using 1920x1080 Apple Intermediate Codec files) and a few effects choke Compressor whether addressed directly or through "Export using Compressor settings...". The compression starts off OK, but when I check in a bit later I see I should expect thirty, fifty hours for the job to complete. I am running a 2.93 GHz iMac I7 (iMac11,3) with 16Gb RAM, so this is dissappointing at best.

does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

  • Compressor WAY too slow!

I normally don't use compressor to export my movies because I know it takes a little bit longer and I'm usually in a rush. I seem to be a bit more organized these days so I thought I'd give compressor another try. Holy Moly!! It has been two days now that it's been exporting a 20 mins movie... In final cut I can export that same movie in less than 3 hours. It doesn't always do it and I do use compressor for transcoding all my files into prores first and that is usually pretty fast. But when I send something from FCP to Compressor it is just painfully slow beyond a reasonable explanation. Anyone have any ideas on how I could make my compressor faster or what could possibly be causing compressor to take more than 2 days to export a 20min movie?? It's a very simple movie without any effects or crazy stuff... in prores. Shouldn't be doing that to me!

there is a great solution for this,
it's extremely fast (4 simultanious conversions, extremely large batch lists, click & run immediatly)
    and best of all:
    YEAH IT'S TOTALLY FREE
    where I came from
I needed to batch convert Canon 5D footage (33GB!) to Apple Pro Ress 422, didn't work at all:
Compressor didn't work, took me days, didn't respond, terrible, Apple ruined it.
Quicktime 7 Pro opening it by hand, one by one, worked pretty fast though,
but no batch functionality, not going to do the hand job...
But there should be something possible one might think if the handjob is faster than the batchjob.
Adobe Media Encoder crashed with such large amounts of data, no go eather.
But MPEG StreamClip did it for me, even better, faster, more settings, cropping, de-interlacing, audio-settings, all the things you need. You even can repair your Time Code. I use StreamClip since the beginning. Works flawless on Apple & Windows:
    solution
    download it here: http://www.squared5.com
It's worth sending the maker money, food, drinks & flowers since he did a job for free that Apple couldn't come up with. Please reward this guy! This works for me since the very beginning.
MPEG StreamClip needs to be in every filmmakers toolbox.

Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G56)
Final Cut Pro 7 latest update
    MPEG Streamclip: Version 1.9.2 (1.9.2)
to proof how fast it runs check the documents creation times:
    list view in MPEG STreamclip:
Converting 33GB of Canon 5D DSLR footage to Apple ProRess 422 will take about 2 hours.
    Problem solved.

  • Render fast, then render slow

    Perplexing.
I'm a fairly long time Motion user. I have a simple (3 layer) animation, A globe turning, a copy of the globe turning (with Gaussian blur and color correction to make the haze around the earth) and a star background. All are renders from Lightwave.
There's no keyframing of any kind going on in Motion, just put the 3 layers together, a little transparency here and there, bloom filter on the stars.
Then I export the movie, H.264, 1920 x 1080 (which is the original size of the files). The first 240 or so frames render at about 1 second per frame. Yahoo. Then at around frame 240, the render slows to a crawl. Remaining time goes from 19 seconds, to 2 minutes to 5 minutes!
Nothing happens in my timeline at this spot. In fact, the place were rendering slows down seems to vary from render to render. I even rendered out the back to layers (glowy blurry earth and starfield) to make a single frame backdrop, and turned this into a 2 layer comp, with the second layer a rendered still... problem persists.
Anyone out there seen this or know of possible solution?

Perhaps your computer is insufficient? Have you tried to render out a less compressed codec and then compress it after in Compressor?

  • Audio Sync when Exporting Using Compressor

    Hello!
Having an odd situation. Project in FCP 4.5 the audio is sync'd just fine in FCP export using Compressor and the audio is delayed about 5 seconds...so the video footage starts and about 5 seconds later the audio starts. Now, in the same project I have other footage and exported the same exact way without issues - I have no idea why this particular footage would be an issue! Because Compressor is exporting these files with the audio and video as separate files I am seeing this issue when the file is in DVD Studio Pro - but again none of the other files that are being placed on this DVD are having audio alignment issues...so this is not making sense.
I am not 'new' at this but I am no expert either - my main gig is audio - so I could really use some help.
Any suggestions? I am not sure what other information someone would need to help so ask away.
    Thanks in advance!

Well I REALLY need some help with this one! I have tried so many different 'work arounds' without success. As mentioned in my first post the audio is not sync'ing with the video when exported. I have tried Exporting the file in QuickTime, I have tried using Compressor again exporting just the video then the audio - pulling it into a new session and lining it up again but everytime I pull it the newly exported file into a new project and render it FCP crashes not allowing it to render (nice!). I actually started from square one capturing the video footage again and assemble the project again without luck. I simply cannot believe what a pain in the arse this is!! I need to get this project done and it simply won't do it.
Where are my blood pressure pills????

  • Using compressor with h.264 footage shot at 29.97

when i try to drag in a bunch of h.264 footage shot at 29.97 into a new batch to transcode to apple pro res, compressor runs really slow. It takes a long time for the clips to appear in the new batch document window. If I do the same with h.264 footage shot at 23.98 the clips appear almost instantaneously. Once it appears in window the 29.97 footage can be submitted and it does compress. Anybody else out there have this problem?

  • Trying to Use Compressor to get a 24P appearance?

    Hello
I made a dumb mistake and shot some footage in standard 29P (my other cameras were set for 24P)
I realize I might have a difficult task trying to make this 29P footage look like 24P
Graeme Nattress mentioned that I might be able to achieve some similarity by exporting using Compressor and advanced settings? But I'm not sure just exactly/what settings to do that?
    Here's a screen shot;
    http://www.locationstudio.net/Compressor-1.jpg
Can you guys help with this?
I also have Magic Bullet - wonder if I can use this as well?
    Thank you
    Mike

    Hello again Patrick
I guess you've been quite busy, but I appreciate your replies.
Thank you for your help and reply - I'm trying to understand your suggestions - please bear with me
"The only way you're gonna get your 30P material to feel EXACTLY like 24 is to run it at 24 and add a pulldown"
Patrick can you telll me please what do you mean by a 'Pull Down'?
I'm using FCP 5.1, and I've already captured these shots and saved them as a clip/segment within a FCP File. Now when you say, a 'Pull Down', are you referring to an export of what I already shot?
Or maybe it's another type of process?
Where do I do this pulldown? Would I do this in Magic Bullet's Frames? Or any other application which would allow me to convert 30P to 24P? Or do I do this right on the FCP timeline?
I already tried to use FCP Cine Tools, and converted some of it to 24P, but it does not look any different. It still does NOT look like the other 24P 'Film Look' footage shot with the other same cameras and set with the same aperture settings. It seems to me that I would have noticed a few frames dropped every second, if Cine Tools was working wouldn't you think?
And in answer to your question, a 20% slow down would be welcomed, if it will look more like the 24P stuff that it was supposed to be. The clips are short/brief and yes, I can get them to work with the other 24P clips just fine.
    Hope you can help ....
    Thanx
    Mike

  • Export Using Compressor from FCP fails every time

When I try to use the File>Export>Using Compressor command in FC Studio 2, everything seems normal until I submit the batch. But the job fails every time.
I get the following message: "Processing service request error: Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server".
I've gone through all the discussion stuff on how Compressor needs to be reinstalled and all that. That's not my problem here. Compressor will work fine if I use it standing alone. It's only if I try to use the FCP export that this problem occurs.

Compressor works fine as a stand alone when I import a Quicktime file. However, if I try to export a suquence directly from FCP, it gives me a message "File Error: A file of this name already exists". If I press okay it exports it to Compressor which gives me a message, "Can't preview movie Final Cup Pro App is busy".
Then when I go ahead and load the output settings into compressor ( actual compressor window shows the sequence as being loaded) it starts to render and then it stops with the following message logged
    "Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass

    Time Remaining: 0:00:00

Any ideas what the problem might be?
