Using content aware with a new layer

I am trying to use content aware with a new layer which i have made a smart object but when I select fill it is greyed out. why?.

CAF doesn't have a Sample all layers option, and needs source pixels to work on. The best you can do is select those parts of the background layer that you are happy to be sampled from, and copy them to a new layer and use CAF on that layer. This prevents gaps in the landscape being filled with a foregrounsd subject's head!
You can then add a layer mask to that layer to the new layer to use only those parts you need.

R_Kelly, Sorry I am late in getting back with you, have been out of town on business. I think I found out what I was doing wrong. I created a duplicte background layer and had not check off sample both layers. Corrected this and my problem has gone away.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

Using Time Machine, or any other such program, to transfer Adobe software from one machine to another works probably less than five percent of the time. Uninstall from your new machine. Run the cleaner tool (do a search for Cleaner Tool on this site if you don't know what it is). Then reinstall properly from original media or downloads.

You can use iCloud to sync your Safari bookmarks between your Mac and your iPad.

Content Aware Scaling on Video Layer

I hope this is possible because it works really well on still frames but how would I go about applying content aware scaling to a video layer inside PS? Basically I'm trying to use this feature to fake an aspect ratio change where by I have a subject surrounded by a relatively uniform background and I would like to be able to create a protection mask as an alpha layer and have photoshop apply the content aware scaling only to the background(to fill in the empty parts of the rescaled video) and leave the subject untouched.
What I've done is opened a video in photoshop as a layer, created an alpha channel to represent the subject(subject is white, background is black on the created alpha channel), changed the canvas size to the new aspect ratio which obviously created a tranparent frame around the original video frame. I then tried to apply content aware scaling to the video, it converted the layer to a smart object then displayed the free transform handles. However, when I selected my alpha channel as the protection area, the content aware scaling seemed to ignore it and went on to distort the entire frame. Now I tried this with still frame from the same video with the same mask/alpha channel and it worked as expected just didn't seem to do it with video.
The idea, if it would be possible to do this in PS, is to rotoscope the subject roughly in AE and generate a matte pass which can then be used as the acompanying alpha layer of the video so then the content aware scaling can be applied to each invidividual frame.
Is this possible??

No that's not what I was trying to do, I mask the central subject of my frame and as I said it was surrounded by a fairly uniform background(main subject is a rock formation in the middle of the ocean) I want to change the aspect ratio of that frame, so I created an alpha mask to cover the main subject, the surrounding background was not covered in this alpha channel mask. This way when I scale using the content aware feature all that happens is the background(the water) is streteched evenly with lesser distorion(than normal scaling) while the masked main subject is "avoided" with completely no distrotion. I think the key point you missed in my description is that I am in fact creating an alpha matte for only my subject not the entire frame and using that in the "protect" option of content aware scaling.
The result is essentially a frame aspect ratio change that does not sacrifice the resolution around the main subject(because the main subject remains of the same size and PS doesn't have to interpolate any pixels...this is obviously is not the same as just resizng and cropping where the subject and background are streched evenly to fill an essentially larger area of the screen causing "softness"). The result using this method is also much more predictable from frame to frame than content aware filling because it's taking information from the current frame and using is to fill the empty background resulting from the aspect ratio change. I know this works because I tried it on individual still frames from the video then compiled them back in on AfterEffects...thats not my problem. My problem is when you try to natively try to do this inside PS on a video layer(rather than a still frame) it doesn't work and I'm not sure if this is a bug or if video content aware streching is just not supported.I have CS6 Production Premium.

Content Aware Fill (CAF) is a great feature, but sometimes it needs a bit of help. Make your selection as tight as you can to the area you want to remove. A good way to do this is to use Quick select tool with Select > Modify > Expand
But CAF can still get it wrong, using source pixels you don't want in the fill - like putting a persons head in the sky! To prevent this happening make a rough selection that includes the area you want to remove, plus the areas you want used in the fill. Copy that to a new layer, and use CAF on that layer.

Using content aware fill in photomerge

I have three images (TIFF files total size about 240MB) that I want to create a panoramic from. I use photomerge in CS5. All works well (in 64 bit) but when I choose the content aware fill option an error message comes up (see image). I have 4GB Ram memory on my 3.06 Ghz Intel Core Duo Processor. The message that it could not complete the fill because there is not enough memory should not happen. My system fits all the requirements to run CS5. Is this a bug in the adobe software? Is there someone with expertise on this that can advise me?

Perhaps you can help me with a somewhat related problem. I can't get the following Commands to operate in 64 bit, i.e., Photomerge, Merge to HDR and Load into Photoshop Layers. They work fine in 32 bit despite the fact that you're limited to only a moderate amount of RAM in 32 bit (1470). When I'm in 64 bit mode, the amount of RAM I've allocated is 5348. I'm working on a Quad Core Mac Pro with a whole 1 TB hard drive dedicated to as a scratch disk. This doesn't make sense to me that when you're throwing more capacity at the process is when the problem arises. What I consistently get is a dialog box stating "Photoshop Quite Unexpectedly."

Content Aware with Magic Wand¿

I used to fill in gaps of missing Panos with content aware in CS5 using the magic wand and fill - content aware. In CS6 it fills it in with the foreground color. The only way I can get the content aware to work is if I make the selection with the lasso tool. The quick Sslection tool will not even select the area without pixels. Anyone else had this issue¿

Thank you for the reply. Yes I selected the content aware option in the drop down; I have been using the content aware to fill in gaps in panos for a long time now. The issue is in the CS6 Beta when I use the magic wand to select the empty pixels, and there are a lot in places, it will only fill it with a solid color. Also the quick select tool will not even select empty pixels. The pano I have isn't that large, 35090 px by 3490 px, not near the type of panos Ben Willmore does for example. I just wondered if anyone else has this issue and if so is there a fix.

Content Aware Scale shortcut duplicates Layer ?

There seems to be a difference between accessing Content Aware Scale via the key shortcut and the Edit menu using CS5:
- If I use the Edit menu to call up the Content Aware Scale command on a Layer or background it edits the item directly, replacing the original image.
- If I use the shortcut Cmd + Alt + Shift +C to access the Content Aware Scale command, it gives me a duplicate Layer, or duplicates the image as I carry out a transform instead.
Is this a feature by design ?

so i saw the little video that steve forde did on "what they never intended for warp stabilizer to do" and it got me thinking about another issue, and i was wondering if there is already anyway to fix these issues, or if it would even be conceivable to do via update/feature request....
so say your shooting a video, and the location or event or what have you was just not condusive for a tri/mono pod, so you have to hold the camera, and say you had a good zoom-in on a subject and then either a)you lost balance, or b)had a hand cramp or spasm and caused the camera to jerk to the side for a moment or something, and you can't just "go back and re-shoot it" is there anyway to bring the footage in AE, cut out the frames that are effected leaving blank frames, and using a "pseudo content aware" to fill the frames with information that could have possibly belonged comparing frames before and after your cut?
is there already a plug-in for this? if not, would this plug-in even be feasable to write? i realize it would probably be pretty cpu intensize, and probably not be able to pull it off exactly as how it would look had the shot never been affected... but just something that sounded interesting to dream....

Anything is possible and CAF for video is much requested, but temporal logic is tricky. There have been various tech demos over the years that deal with synthesizing missing frames based on various methods, but so far none have made it into a commercial product, at least not one that mundane people have access to. Whether or not Adobe will include such a technology at some point is an open question, anyway. As we all know, you won't know it until it's there and whether that be CS6, CS7 or later nobody can tell you...

Something has changed - cannot use remote prointer with my new MacBook Pro

I replaced my 3 year old MacBookPro with a new one 3 weeks ago (late April 2010). I just discovered that my 4 month old remote laser pointer (RemotePoint RF VP4810R and RF wireless from SMK-Interlink - www.smklink.com) will not work with this new system. All it is supposed to do is advance (and go back) slides in Keynote. It works with every older Mac and every PC, but not with the new MacBookPro. I brought the device into the Apple store and it works with all older Macs they had but NONE of the new MacBookPros. Any ideas on what I can do? The store "genius's" blame it on the new chipset - a hypothesis with no solution. It used to be that Apple was plug and play. What is happening? One theory from Interlink is that they new Mac may not be effective in switching to lower speed USB devices. If true, it could affect many other devices.

I have found a temporary solution. Combining ideas from the Apple store guys (it's a chipset problem) and the SMK-Interlink customer service (new MacBookPro may not slow down for the really slow speed USB devices), I attached my combination card reader/USB hub I have to handle my multiple card types from my cameras. I attached the USB cable from the RemotePointer's RF Wireless device to the hub and everything works! So this may not be just a problem with this device, but any simple but slow USB device you plug into the new MacBook Pro. But that's my opinion, an untested theory.
