Using DHCP and DNS and categorizing workstations

The UAB Health System network is part, but separate from the uab campus network. The campus is basically our ISP. The drawing above shows the existing link (all the devices that are not highlighted in red). We are planning to add redundancy to our internet link. One option is to use another Hospital which is connected to the same fiber plant with us. Ideally, we would have these two links and be able to maintain our current DNS names which is a sub-domain off the uab campus domain (hs.uab.edu). Is this possible?

I have a document that I intending to attached, but now can't figure out how to do it. I will be happy to email it to anyone that will try to help me.

  • Incorrect DNS when using DHCP. DNS server is considered to be a Virus??

Running 10.5.5. Noticed extreme slow down in resolving domains in safari, firefox. I currently use Verizon FIOS. When looking in network settings it shows a DNS server as 85.255.115.30. This is not verizon's DNS server. When I delete that server out and add the Open DNS server's address internet works great. This is not an issue on Verizon's end because any ethernet connection to any internet provider will default to using that address for DNS. Only does it over ethernet. Tried deleting the port and re adding and still comes back. No issues when booted off another drive. Mcafee says that a Trojan changes the DNS on PC's. No PC's are networked to this mac. I cannot delete this DNS server under the DNS tab in advanced settings...?

That IP address does seem to fall within the range known to have been used by the DNS changer trojan (try searching the web for "DNS changer", puper, OSX.RSPlug.A, 1023.dmg, etc.). That very likely means that at some point, malware managed to run with "root" privileges on your system.
Under such circumstances, it would be safest to back up all of your data and reinstall the OS and applications from known "good" media.

  • Using DHCP and assigning to hardware MAC-address

    Hi,
Is it possible for the DHCP functionality of the Airport Extreme Base to manually assign an IP-address to the MAC-address of a computer on the network?
This is a feature that I am missing a lot.
    Thanks.

mbp, Welcome to the discussion area!

No, this is not a feature available from an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).

  • [Solved] Although I'm using DHCP I want fixed DNS

I'm using a wired internet connection (eth0) configured as dhcp and this works fine.
However, I don't want dhcp to choose my DNS servers.
In other distros, I can get around this by adding my preferred DNS addresses as prepends in the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf file (or it may be /etc/dhclient.conf).
However, I can't find anything equivalent here in ArchLinux.
Can somebody please advise me how to do this.
    Thanks

If you use DHCP and you don't want your DNS servers to change every time you start your network, add the "-R" option to DHCPCD_ARGS in /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd (used by /etc/rc.d/network). This prevents DHCP from rewriting your /etc/resolv.conf every time:
    DHCPCD_ARGS="-R -t 30 -h $HOSTNAME"

  • Dhcp and nis

I have Solaris 10 installed on an x-86 box with 2 nics installed.
I am trying to configure one nic to use dhcp and access the internet as well as on the 2nd nic have an nis network that has a static ip range that will be a master to 3 other clients. Is this possible? I've been able to configure the primary nic with dhcp to go out to the net, but wasn't very successful with NIS on nic 2. Seeking advice on this.

  • SCCM 2012 R2, DHCP and WDS and PXE same server

    hi
I am using DHCP and PXE on same server and getting error PXE-E55: proxyDHCP did not reply to request on port 4011

    HI,
To get WDS and DHCP to work on the same machine, you need to configure WDS to share the same server as DHCP, here is how it is done.
You must have a functioning DHCP server with an active scope. WDS will utilize PXE which requires a DHCP server.
Whether you plan to co-host WDS and DHCP on the same server or use two different servers you must configure WDS to listen on a specific port. DHCP and WDS both require port number 67. If you have co-hosted WDS and DHCP you can move DHCP or the PXE site role
to a separate server or use the procedure below to configure the WDS server to listen on a different port.
    Modify the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSPXE
    Set the registry value to:
    UseDHCPPorts = 0
For the new configuration to take effect run the following command on the co-located DHCP and WDS server:
    WDSUTIL /Set-Server /UseDHCPPorts:No /DHCPOption60:Yes

  • Using DHCP Airport Extreme WRONG IP ADDY

I connect my modem directly to my computer and the internet works perfectly.
I try and use my Airport Extreme using DHCP and my Airport Extreme ALWAYS automatically picks an INVALID IP address.
I have no idea why the Airport Extreme is doing this.

When changing network configurations, it is always a good idea to do a complete power recycle of all of your network components.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • WPAD file using DHCP

We would like to push out the proxy setting using DHCP and a wpad.dat file.
I have created a wpad.dat file that is hosted on a web server in the main office. If I setup option 252 on the dhcp server and point it to the webserver
http://test/wpad.dat the head office can connect to the internet using that file. If I setup my branch offices dhcp server to use that same file that is hosted at the main office it says page cannot be displayed. Everything
is the wpad.dat file is correct to say if your in this ip range and trying to go to the internet sites use proxy server.
On all branch office systems, if I open up IE and go to
http://test/wpad.dat they are able to download the file. What would be causing the branch office to not be able to get on the internet using the wpad.dat file? THe IE automatic detect setting Is checked off in all IE browsers so that is not the issue.
Also when using the wpad.dat file using dhcp from any system, does it copy the wpad.dat file to the local pc or does it send each request where the file is hosted and then that server pushes request to the proxy server?

    Hi,
It almost sounds like the branch office clients are getting the file, but they are not allowed to use the proxy server in the file? If you configure the client manually to use the Proxy in the wpad file, does it work then?
I am also guessing that you mean that the IE automatic detect setting is checked and not off. :)
The WPAD settings is cached in ie as you can see in this article.

  • Using eDir as backend store for DHCP and DNS

Hmm, haven't tried that. I guess that it would be quite tricky. Even if
you did manage to do it I don't think iManager would be able to see the
    config.

  • How share ADSL Internet connection to all machines without RRAS but using Windows Server DHCP and DNS

    Hello!
I have this scenario on my small network with 10 PCs (connecting from outside to inside my network):
    1) Modem with ADSL connection
    2) Wireless Router with public IP on WAN interface
    3) Switch
    4) Server 2012 with DC/DHCP/DNS (with 2 NICs) and others servers/desktops machines
I want to share internet to servers and desktops.
I was able to share internet by 2 methods searching on google, but I am not satisfied with them:
First method - Using the Wireless Router and its DHCP Server
I turned on the DHCP inside the Wireless Router. All machines will get an IP and be able to go to Internet, but I don’t have the ability to control the DHCP and DNS in the router
how I would like to have, because the server DHCP and DNS must be turned off on Windows Server.
Second method - Using the Windows Server RRAS NAT, DHCP and DNS server
I have 2 NICs on the server:
    NIC1 - CONNECTED TO SWITCH
    IP: 192.168.1.1
    MSK: 255.255.255.0
    GTW:192.168.1.1
    DNS:192.168.1.1
NIC2 - CONNECTED TO WIRELESS ROUTER
(the LAN IP of the wireless router is 172.16.0.1)
    IP: 172.16.0.2
    MSK: 255.255.0.0
    GTW: 172.16.0.1
    DNS: 172.16.0.1
After installing and setting the RRAS with NAT at the Server, the internet began to work on all machines but at some times the internet stop to load some
random webpages, and if you hit a couple of times the F5 button, the webpage open sometimes, but very, very slow.
I saw other people in foruns saying that RRAS is not very good, and could cause weird things at internet connection, so, now I think the internet is horrible
because of RRAS. After notice that internet is bad I tested it connecting a cable direct to the lan ports of the Wireless Router, and the internet works fast and perfect.
What is the best thing to do in my case to maintain Windows Server DHCP and DNS turned on and Internet be shared without loss of quality?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
please deploy according to this network topology. please turn off DHCP from router and use internal NAT function to share internet. Detailed configurations:
    Router part:
    LAN address: 192.168.1.1/24
    DHCP part:
    scope name : site name
    address pool: 192.168.1.3-192.168.1.254
    scope options:
    router:192.168.1.1
    DNS server:192.168.1.2
    DNS part:
configure a forwarder to point to the public DNS address such as 8.8.8.8
with these settings, you can maintain Windows Server DHCP and DNS turned on and Internet be shared via hardware router.
    Regards,
    Mike

  • Non-ISP DDNS with Apple DHCP and DNS Services

I have two questions about Dynamic DNS (DDNS) as it applies to Apple's DNS and DHCP services within my home network. I am not talking about DDNS in the context of making my external-facing router available by a domain name on the Internet using the dynamically-assigned IP from my ISP.
Starting with Snow Leopard Server, I attempted to use Apple's DNS and DHCP services (I have the firmware-based DHCP service in my router turned off.) The difficulty I immediately faced was that Apple's DHCP implementation didn't update the DNS service as IPs were handed out to DHCP clients. Because of this, it wasn't possible to access hosts by their hostname, since getting a DHCP-assigned dynamic IP at boot-up didn't do anything to automagically register the hostname-to-IP mapping in DNS. Manually registering the hostname in DNS was pointless, becuase over time the client IP address can and did change. I could create static IP assignments based on the MAC address, but doing that for all of the devices on my home network sort of defeated the purpose of using dynamic IPs.
The only solution I eventually found was to go out and get an open source DHCP server, compile it for my Mac, install it, and configure it. After doing this, everything worked great; every time a new host or other device was booted it got a dynamic IP through DHCP, and then the DHCP server automatically updated Apple's DNS serive with the hostname and assigned IP. I could immediately access every device on my network by hostname. As IP addresses changed over time, the hostname-to-IP mapping in DNS was automatically updated.
Except, Apple's point upgrades kept breaking my non-Apple DHCP install. Every time I applied software updates to my server I had to go back and re-finagle DHCP to get it to automatically start and run. By the time Lion Server came out, I drank the Kool-Aid and went back to Apple's DHCP implementation. I was disappointed that it still didn't seem able to update DNS with hostnames as it assigned IPs, but I was so tired of mucking about at the command prompt to fix DHCP every time Software Updates broke it, I just lived with the inconvenience of not being able to access devices on my network by hostname.
I'm sorry to say this, but Windows Server has had this capability since at least server 2003. In fact, until I dumped my Windows Server and switched to Snow Leopard Server, I was running Microsoft's DNS and DHCP services on Server 2003 and they did exactly what I'm describing brilliantly.
Can anyone offer any advice here? Does Mountain Lion's implementation of DHCP allow for DDNS updates to the DNS service? If not, how are other people handling this? Should I go back to running Windows Server for my DNS and DHCP services? My Netgear WNDR3700 router appears to have the standard, substandard DHCP server in firmware as most home routers, and no facility for DNS at all--much less the ability to update an on-site DNS sever with IP addresess it hands out. In fact, the only appliance I know of that does this is the InfoBlox my employer uses, but that's too expensive for a home solution.
As a Post Script, I'll add that I've been VERY unhappy that I lost the ability to bind Windows clients to Open Directory under Lion Server. Since I'm starting to see articles that say this capability hasn't been added back to Mountain Lion Server, I'm seriously considering implementing a Windows Server AD master and establishing a "magic triangle" or "golden triangle". If I end up having to do that, I wonder if I might as well just go back to using Microsoft's DNS and DHCP services.

    Hi,
Whether to move your DHCP to another server depends on the workload of your server. If there are too many clients on the network, you should move your DHCP to another server.
Did the record which owned by the machine generate before you configure the DnsUpdateProxy group? You can try to regenerate the record and check the result.

  • Setting up DNS on Xserve when DHCP and Nat ae controlled by windows machine

Trying to set up an Intel based Xserve on an internal network to have 6 other G5's authenticate to. But I am having problems setting up DNS.
This server is being added to a windows network that has DHCP and NAT handled by a different windows machine. I have also assigned the xserve with a static IP address of 192.168.1.XXX Now this server is just going to run a few programs for the 6 macs in the art department. Software Update, Version Cue, Suitcase Server. I have version cue and suitcase server up and running. But I would also like to have the macs authenticate to the server for the updates.
If I type in hostname at terminal I get:
    localhost.xserve
and when I type in host 192.168.1.XXX
I get some error about no name aviable or something...
How can I setup simple dns just for the server? Would there be any down falls for having DNS setup on this machine when it is conected to a windowws network?
Please help. Sorry for the long winded explination.

Yes, it's possible. Although I'm no longer favorable towards fake "domains" like .lan or the like.
Besides which (and most people don't know) ".lan" is actually an existant TLD. So it's not so great either.
Set the server to what it's FQDN should be, and set it to answer to & for itself only.
Is everything else internally using ".lan" ? If not you're going to have to point clients to your server strictly by IP alone and while that's fine, this setup is starting to sound just ugly, if not somewhat Frankenstein-ian
But to limit requests you'll have to edit /etc/named.conf by hand.
Google can lead you to the information, there's plenty out there - here's one for example:

  • How to manually configure and then use DHCP

I'm having problems with internet connectivity. If I try to configure in Airport Utility, there are two choices - manual or use DHCP. If I allow AU to renew the DCHP lease, I end up with a bad IP address (one of those 169.... ones). If I configure manually and put in the IP address my service provide gave me, then I can input the address, but without the lease renewal, it won't connect. Put in the address in manual, switch to renew the lease, the bad address shows up.
Obviously, since I'm writing this on-line I have connectivity, via the Ethernet port in the back of my iMac, which has the correct IP address I had to type in and is also using DHCP.
So, what's the difference? Why won't Airport line up things just as the Ethernet network will?

It sounds like your cable/DSL modem is not properly recognizing the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). Most of the time this can be remedied by just performing a complete power recycle when changing network configurations ... like when you switch what is connected to the modem.
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AX, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Configure WRT54G Wireless Router with PUBLIC IP address and use DHCP for internal computers

Hi,I have an Internet online service with 5 public IP addresses. The router and the AP are connected to a switch. I would like to configure a WRT54G wireless router with one of this IP public Address and use DHCP (with private ip address)  for the computers that will connect to the AP. As the AP is connected to the switch it is possible that other wired computers that are connected to the same switch can obtain an IP address from the DHCP ?
     Thansk in advance

Thanks for your help. Please correct me if Im wrong. After connecte the equipments the way you suggestI setup a static IP address (The public IP)  in the WRT54GI enable DHCP in the WRT54G with a range from 10.10.0.100 to 10.10.0.200 (as an example) The gateway is the Public IP address right ? How do I route the 10.10.0.x addresses to the public IP address. Thansk again

  • Problems setting up Verizon DSL (DHCP) and AirPort Extreme

I have Verizon DSL with DHCP and old router (Linksys WRT54G). I've bought iMac and new router (AirPort Extreme) to connect to iMac wirelessly. I have a Windows computer connected to the Linksys WRT54G. Now here is the story. I can connect verizon DSL modem (it's in bridge mode) to PC directly and connect to the Internet. When I plug AirPort between the DSL modem and PC, auto-configuration doesn't work, AirPort utility says there is problem with internet connection. Router simply can't obtain IP address from verizon's DHCP server. I've tried to copy DNS server addressed from the IP configuration in Windows, the AirPort light went green and Windows indicated connection as successful, however I still cound't browse the Internet because gateway is not set. Any ideas how to make AirPort connect to the internet using DHCP instead of manual settings? I can try to do it from the mac if needed, I don't think it would make any difference though.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Sorry, I can't quite track exactly what you are trying to do.
What would the network that you are trying to set up look like?
Modem>AirPort Extreme>Computers? Are you saying that you won't be using the Linksys in the new setup?
Sounds like you need to set the Airport Extreme up to supply PPPoE service (which the Linksys is doing now-if the modem is in bridge mode), but I will wait for your response before offering specific info.
If you've been fiddling with settings, we may need to do a hard-reset on the AX to start over. You should not be fiddling with DNS, etc. Almost always, these settings are done automatically when you have the device set up correctly.
