Using different user accounts?

Does it slow down your computer if you add users to your computer and does it slow it down using fast user switching?

Luc,
Only two things will slow it down noticably:
Filling up the hard drive too much.
Running more programs than RAM can hold at one time. (Note - you can have hundreds of programs "running" if they are programmed well, and can sit idle if they don't have things to do).
Adding 10 or 20 users will not change things noticably as long as you only use one at a time and keep 4 or more Gig free on disk. Running two or three at one time is normally fine as long as movies are not being rendered, programs compiled or other CPU intensive tasks. Safari with lots of tabs and annoying adds and flash animations playing is the one thing that can really slow my mac down. (But it seems to get better and better as Safari and the plug ins mature and the OS patches come out)

  • Using same Aperture 3 library with different user accounts. Suggestions?

My wife and I share the same iMac but use different user accounts. Currently, I have our photos and Aperture library on a second partition with no ownership, allowing us both to access the library and edit, reorganize, etc (I know we need to be careful not to make changes "simultaneously," so we simply shut one instance down before switching user accounts). The trick is quickly becoming the organizational scheme. My wife thinks (and I agree) that Aperture will be able to free us from having to "give in" to the other's way of thinking when it comes to grouping pictures in projects, etc. The only trick is, we can't figure out how to do it. My initial thought is to figure if one photo can exist in two different projects and then just have "hers" and "his" folders. The other thought would be to create two different libraries, but then I'm not sure how we would keep the two libraries "current" if one uploaded photos and didn't tell the other.
So, those are my two thoughts, but I'm sure there are others. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Drag your entire *iTunes folder* from /Username/Music to /Users/Shared.
    3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Option key.
3 iTunes will ask to *Create new library* or *Choose existing library*. Select *Choose existing library*.
4 Select the *iTunes library file* in the *iTunes folder* in /Users/Shared.
5 Now go to File -> *Add to library* and select the *iTunes music folder* located in /Username/Music.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
7 Delete the *iTunes folder* in /Username/Music
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Option). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to Playlist is not the playlist you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time. If you have Fast user switching enabled, the other users must quit iTunes in order for anyone else to use it.

  • Help using file sharing with different users accounts on same Macbook

Hi, I just wanted a little help using the file sharing option. My wife and I had different users accounts on the same MacBook, but when I am trying to share my baby's picture from my documents folder for my wife to have the same picture, I can't find the way to do that; I am not been able to find my pictures on my wife's account. Is there any way that I could share a folder from my account and my wife to have the same files at the same time on her account?
I mean, something like the smart play list on the itunes?
    Thank you

You can't do that directly unless you change permissions on your whole Documents folder which is not a good idea. Your wife can see your Documents folder from her account by going to Users/yourusername/Documents. However, this folder has no read privileges for others except yourself by default so she won't be able to open it.
rather than changing permissions on your Documents folder, you can place the pictures you want to share in Public folder in your home directory or in Users/Shared folder.

  • HT3819 How to use homesharing between different user accounts on the same iMac?

I find plenty of articles about homesharing on iTunes between computers, but not between two different user accounts on the same iMac.  Any advice or direction to an existing artical is greatly appreciated.  I'm knew to the Mac and still have Windows on the brain.
I am trying to share iTunes music and movie purchases between my user login and my wife's.

    Hello careymp1017,
This can be achieved, but will not utilize HomeSharing. Further information and steps can be found in the following article.

  • Multiple iTunes 8 for 2 different user accounts on one Mac: Possible?

    Hi,
My MacPro has 2 different user accounts on it. Mine and my wife's. I have all of the iTunes music, pod-casts and iPhone Apps set up in iTunes 8 on my user account. The problem is that I want to be able to sync our iPhone 3G which she uses in HER account so that I can sync and save her 3G address Books contacts and calendar events.
I just updated my iPhone's firmware from V2.0 to V2.1 and I backed the phone up in iTunes 8 first. Much to my surprise ALL contact and calendar data was LOST. Am I correct in thinking that the only way of preventing this is by also having this data on my MacPro's iCal and Address Book?
We only use this single iPhone.

  • We are having sync issues when trying to use separate user accounts and Apple ID's on the same iMac. What can we do?

My wife and I share an iMac and we each sync to it using separate user accounts and separate Apple IDs. She has an iPad 2 and I have an iPhone 4. We upgraded the mac to Lion and the iphone to OS 5. Now itunes only recognizes my apple id no matter which user is logged in. Now if I download the Home Depot app to my phone it automatically gets pushed to my wife's iPad, which she does not want. We want to keep things separate. How can we do this?

You can sync devices with the same iCloud ID, not seperate ones.
If she has a different login on your Mac, make sure she has her own ID defined in System Prefs > iCloud

  • Adding music to iTunes from a different user account on the same computer

I have recently begun using a PowerMacG5 at my college and I imported some music, all from CDs into iTunes under my user account. Then I discovered that this Mac already had music in a different location under a different user account. How do I merge these two libraries together so that both have the same music, same library? Or is that impossible?

  • How do I share photos and music between different user accounts on the same macbook

How do I share photos and music between different user accounts on the same Macbook? i.e. I want all to be able to access family photos when logged into their respective accounts. Same goes for the iTunes library. Hope this is possible...
    Thanks!

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
To give others selective access to your iPhoto library, you have the option of using iCloud Photo Sharing, if the privacy implications don't bother you. The images will be stored temporarily on Apple servers.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support articles linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • How do I sync iTunes music to two different iPhones on two different user accounts?

I have read some posts and a help article about this, but I need some clarification becuause what I'm doing is not working out correctly.  My wife syncs her iPhone and iPod to her iTunes.  I recently purchased an iPhone and am going to sync it to my own iTunes on a different user account on the computer.  How can I get the music from her iTunes account to sync with my iTunes/iPhone?  Whenever I try various routes, I end up with duplicated songs on my end and I'm not sure how it works when she adds music to her account.  My wife does all the music purchasing for the both of us and I want the music to sync both ways, but all other content needs to stay separate.  We are running iTunes 11 on Windows 7.  Any help would be appriciate and I'm sorry if this is a redundent question.  Thanks.

I followed the following articles: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
Here are the questions I have regarding the second article which is not clear to me:
When dragging the media file to a public location, the article says not to move the iTunes folder.  Is it Ok that the media file is moved out of the iTunes folder when dragging it to the public location?  Is this what I am trying to accomplish?
There is a note about how iTunes for Windows does not, by default, copy items added to the library to the media folder.  Am I supposed to check the box to allow this?  Do I do the same for all users?
When I change the music folder location, am I changing it to the new public location?  Do I do this for all users on the computer that wants to use the same music files?
I tried changing the file location to the public folder, but received a message asking something to the effect of renaming files to keep the library organized.  Do I want this or not?
There is another note at the end that says if all users are storing their music in the same public location, then duplicates may appear in the library.  Isn't what this procedure is basically doing?  Can someone clarify this?
After following this article to the best of my ability, my iTunes ended up with duplicates of everything, even starting off with nothing there to begin with.

  • Messages on the mac, different user accounts

If you sign into messages on your own password protected user account on a shared mac with different user accounts, will other user accounts be able to access your messages from their account?

    Hi,
This is really a yes, no, maybe answer.
If you set up new Mac user accounts on your Mac and never use any of the details that you use in Messages (any account) then, No.
If however you set up a Mac User account to test and entered the AIM Screen name you use then the Keychain and the .plists may remember some of that account details.
This could be a problem if you then let someone use that Mac User account.
There are ways to get the password info in the Keychain.
To explain  a bit more of the how.
If for instance you created a test Mac User account and set up Messages here.
You could then turn On Parental Controls if it is not an Admin account
If you set the Messages settings then you can not add Buddies to the lists
You cannot chat to Buddies unless they have been added to a list in Parental Controls.
At thie point all your Buddies are Blocked.
Going back to your regular account will find they are blocked there as this function flags the Buddies at the Server end.
If you then add some Buddies but not all then in the AIM Account they become the Allow Specific People list and everyone not in the list is Blocked.
The Allow/block situation remains the same  (even if you move computers or try a web login to AIM)
The same regarding using  the same Apple ID in this Mac User account as it's details are held in the .plist
Also if you had an older Apple ID that you then registered for iCloud and received an @me.com email ID in addition and later an @iCloud.com one you can use these Apple IDs independently of each other with regards to iMessages.
However the server will keep trying to add these to your iMessages account in Messages.
I have not tried creating a separate iMessages account and testing this yet to see if the main Apple ID would try to get added to the other set ups
    Basically the answer is no.
However be careful if any of these Mac Users Accounts  were set up before and have tested anything you use in your Messages app.

  • With XP, with three different user accounts, is it possible to download Firefox 4 to one user and retain Firefox 3 on another, for a learning period?

We are running XP, and have 3 different user accounts on one desktop. We are very excited by the Firefox4 features, but one user has much less comfort with changes, and doesn't want to lose browsing comfort in 3 before he has a chance to get used to using 4. May take a while....
Is there any way to download Firefox 4, perhaps into a new location. Or a new user account. And use this as a 'teaching tool' while still retaining 3?
Or can we upgrade to 4, redownload a version of 3, and import that user's previous bookmarks to the new download of 3, until we get him comfortable.
The answer is probably no. But if there is a creative way to do this, without another computer available, that would be great. If not, we upgrade and deal with the frustration and whining here.... 4 is too good to pass up.
    Ideas?
    Linda

When you install Firefox 4, choose the custom installation option and change the location where Firefox is installed. You will then have 2 versions of Firefox installed.
As you have different user accounts, each user will have their own Firefox profile (location where bookmarks, passwords, etc are stored). You should not switch between different versions of Firefox with the same user profile. For those that want to use Firefox 4, just make sure you use a Firefox shortcut that opens Firefox 4, likewise for the person who wants to stay with Firefox 3, just keep their original Firefox shortcut and it should open the old version.

  • Ebook licensed to a different user account?

I have a problem with using Adobe Digital Editions to download some free eBooks from Borders.com to my Sony PRS-300 Reader.  When I select any of these problem eBooks within ADE, and click on "Item Errors", I see the message, "Document  is licensed to a different user account."  There is also an exclamation point embedded in a brown triangle next to each of these problem books and I don't know what that means.  I would appreciate any advice on how to resolve this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem. I purchased a new ebook from ebook.com. During the download I was prompted to update my Digital Editions to version 1.7. I followed the instructions and while at the Adobe site, I had to create an Abode ID for authorization. I did that, then continued to complete the installation process. The installation was successful and I was able to download the ebook and start reading it. I then decided to read some of my previously purchased books in my Library and they ALL showed error with the following error message:
Document is licensed for a different user account
I have more then 10 books that I now can not access since I did the upgrade. Please provide a solution to this problem.

  • How to transfer itunes library to different user account on mac

how do i transfer all my music, album art, play count, movies, apps, to a different user account on my mac?

Is there a way to have purchased songs located in the Music list on iTunes of two Users and three locations: 1. on the same iMac computer that has two users (we both share the same iTunes account) and 2. on a separate laptop. Two users, same iTunes account, three locations. Possible? I have tried Home Sharing and it will not let me drag the songs from one account to the other; either on the same computer, or to the laptop. I have transferred TV Shows from the laptop to the imac using an iPod. I thought the Home Sharing feature would eliminate this need to manually transfer songs, movies, TV shows etc... What am I missing here?
