Using Digital Audio In to play game console audio?

I was hoping this would work, but not sure it will. So far, it doesn't.
I have my Mac Pro connected to a set of 5.1 Klipsch speakers via Griffin's Firewave device.
I wanted to pass the audio from my Xbox 360 to the Mac Pro (via Toslink out from Xbox to digital audio in on Mac Pro) and have the audio output from the Mac pick it up and send it through the Firewave device to the speakers.
I have the connection made between Xbox and Mac Pro, and have set by Audio Input to Built-in Digital Input, but cannot hear the Xbox audio. I couldn't find any sort of "passthrough" feature in either Apple's or the Firewave's software.
I was hoping this would work because I have a similar setup on my PC laptop and it works great: I have another Xbox 360's digital output connected to the optical digital input on a Creative Labs PCMCIA soundcard, and it's able to pass the audio through to the 5.1 speakers I have connected to the laptop.
When the Xbox is powered on, the Digital Input sound meter in System Preferences remains constant at a near-spiked level, so it appears to be getting SOME kind of sigal from the Xbox, but I guess it doesn't know what to do with it from there.
Any way I can get this working? Alternatively, can I use the RCA stereo audio line out from the Xbox and use a Y-adapter to plug those via mini-stereo into the Mac's Built-in Line In?

When I run AudioHijack Pro and route the audio from digital-in, it works fine. Also, viewing the input page on the sound preference pane, the input level shows activity so I know sound is working. However, I can only route audio using audio hijack pro.

It's normal for the iPad or any similar device to get warm when it's under heavy load. If it gets too warm, it will shut itself off and show a disabled message.

If you believe it's hotter than normal, make a reservation with a Genius.

You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

MACPRO: Is there an interface that uses DIGITAL AUDIO IN?

I just got my new MacPro (woohoo!) and was getting ready to replace my 'ol tube preamp-to-soundcard configuration with a FW input box... when I realized I only have ONE of each FW port!
I already have my USBs overpopulated, and my FW800 daisy-chaining my backup drives... But then I noticed those unused DIGITAL audio plugs in the back.
...Are those even an option?
I really don't know if I want to put a box on the FW daisy chain...

If you want use the digital in/out of your mac are there many fantastic Professional gear
I can suggest
RME ADI-2 it is good and not so expensive
there are also many dream-machines
one of the best (to me) is: Universal Audio 2192 that comes with a Great Class A preamplifier!!!

Can i use my iphone 4s to play games, surf internet and such without phone service? It says i need a sim insertwed to activate it.

recieved phone from a friend. I believe it to be a iphone 4s. I dont know from which carrier it originated CDMA or GSM.Turns on and begins setup. I enter my language and location , it begins to search for a wifi signal which is present then it says insert a valid sim card and it wont go any further than that. It tries to activate but then just says insert valid sim . I just want it too boot up so i can play games, apps, and surf web without phone service. Is that possible? You need a sim to activate an iPhone. The sim does not have to associated
with an active account; however, if the iPhone is locked to a wireless provider,
the sim must be from that wireless provider. Borrow an appropriate sim from
a friend/relative/co-worker for the few moments it will take to activate the iPhone.
You will need a sim in the iPhone to reactivate whenever you restore the iPhone
or update the iOS.
Call Apple to find the origin of the iPhone. You will need the serial number from
the back of the iPhone. Or ask your friend - he should know the details about an
iPhone he previously owned.

Once you have a PSX to USB adapter just get the Joystick Mapper App from the App Store and configure the controller.

There is some sort of software switch in iOS 6. If the podcasts app is installed on the phone, then the default behavior of the Music app changes, and it will no longer display podcasts that are on the phone. You can undo this behavior by deleting the podcasts app, and then restarting your phone once or twice. After that, you should be able to see and play podcasts from within the Music app again (like you could in iOS 5).
Aftter doing this, the music app will also let you create on-the-fly playlists to which you can add podcasts. I do this to queue up multiple podcasts for long commutes, so I don't have to fiddle with the phone while driving.

[Solved] Difficulty getting digital audio to play in all applications

This is probably a noobish question...
My motherboard supports digital audio out via S/PDIF cable (optical), as well as standard analog audio. I have a stereo receiver that I've plugged my optical cable into.
When I go to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Playback, I put the "HDA Intel S/PDIF Digital" device on top and clicked Test. I could hear the test tone (playback source is PCM).
However, if I go to play an MP3 or whatever, I have to go into the settings for each application and tell it to use that particular device. Some applications (such as Firefox) do not have obvious settings for audio playback. Is there a way to solve the problem once and for all (tell the audio system "send everything through the digital device all the time")?
(I read the relevant section of the wiki, but it is focused on getting sound out of your digital device, not making it the default.)
Any other advice or gotchas about using digital audio would also be appreciated.

My .asoundrc looks the same as above. But just for fun, I also tried removing it and restarting alsa, with no change.
I'm testing output by going to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon and clicking the Test button with "HDA Intel (AD198x Digital)" selected. Nothing comes out through SPDIF, though it does play through analog (I have two separate pairs of headphones plugged in, one to the analog jack and one to a headphone amp plugged through the digital port) so I can tell which port the audio is coming from).
I've checked the hardware volume, and it appears to be in order. The amp is not reporting any audio signal on the optical port. I tried switching out the cable just to be paranoid, and still nothing. I believe this is a software problem.
Any ideas?

My imac g5 goes to sleep while in use. typically when im playing games

For the last several months, my mac has been going to sleep during use. Typically when im playing games, like second life, or in any type of programs, but it has also been going to sleep while im watching videos on youtube or hulu. It's getting worse and worse, and once it goes to sleep the first time, it doesnt stay on long afterwards. When browsing the internet, its fine. I've recently backed up 40,000 images that I had on my computer, and deleted for more memory space. but it didnt stop it from going into sleep mode, it just doesnt go as quickly as it was before. I was told that it was a memory problem, but since i deleted all of the images off of my computer, the problem still persists. I even turned sleep mode to "never". Here are some of my computer stats:
Memory: 512 MB
Processor: 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5
Space Free: 104.18 GB
Space utilized: 128.58 GB
My monitor stays warm, never gets hot, but sometimes i can hear the fan blowing loudly when it goes into sleep mode
If anyone could help, i would greatly appreciate it =)

The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
Report any errors it finds.

Digital audio ouput - why no volume control??

This is a problem that has been around for a while (ie. pre-Leopard).
Why is there *no global volume control* when using digital audio output? This includes the inability to mute the output as well as adjust the volume with either the keyboard or the apple remote.
It is *particularly annoying* with Leopard's Front Row as music is not being played via iTunes anymore so I can't use the iTunes volume control...
Please fix this Apple, it can't be that hard. There is no logical reason for disabling volume control for digital outpu!

Yes, it is possible but it isn't desirable. Here's why:
For any linear digital audio encoding process, the bit depth determines the resolution of the volume levels the format can reproduce. For example, for 16 bit audio there are 65536 possible volume levels between dead silent & the absolute maximum possible level (digital clipping). For 24 bit audio there are about 16.7 million levels.
So let's say that you want to turn down the volume at the digital output. The only way to do this is by throwing away all of those levels louder than the desired volume by scaling the output to what is effectively a lower bit depth. Depending on the maximum level the digital input device can produce, it could easily be necessary to scale the digital output to one ten thousandth or less of the maximum output just to achieve a comfortable level, & to scale it much smaller still for background music levels.
So, for an effective volume control with a usable range from "very quiet" to "full tilt" you would really be going from "miserably inadequate resolution" to "high quality resolution."
If you want to hear just how miserable sounding the quiet settings would be, & you have any sound editing software that can change digital volume levels of samples, try this:
Select a short sample & reduce it by 40 dB. Save it & then renormalize that saved sample to full scale. Listen to the result & compare it to the original. Not too pleasant, is it?

How to connect a APExpress to a digital audio console

I have a Yamaha M7CL digital audio console that has an Ethernet connection. I want to control the desk wirelessly using the APExpress. I know how to do it with a Linksys or Netgear router. With those I need to plucg into one of the 4 LAN ports. Not the WAN. And it works great. Since the APEx has only one port (LAN or WAN?) How can I make it work. The console has Network settings that can be changed but I think my issue is that the port on the APE is looking for internet. I'm not interested in using this set up to surf the web I only trying to connect the 2 and wirelessly connect with my laptop. With all the different settings I have no idea where to begin. Can anyone give me a clue. Thanks.

In order for the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) Ethernet port to perform as a "LAN" port so that the Yamaha can access the network/Internet, it would need to be reconfigured as one of the following:
For both the 802.11b/g and 802.11n versions of the AX:
o As as relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
For the 802.11n version only:
o As an extender of a wireless network created by another 802.11n AirPort or Time Capsule.
o As a wireless Ethernet bridge (ProxySTA).
