Using disk utility to burn new image dvd's

Ok I just learned to burn DVD'd using Disk Utility and New image.
But I have come to halt in my burning with a new issue.
My issue is that I have a file that is 4.63GB. When I make a new image so that I can burn it, it increases the size of the file(Video TS) to 5.13GB. Making it to big for a 4.7GB DVD.
My question is is this normal for the new image file to increase in size, and is there a way for me to stop this from happening. Or can anyone give me any other suggestions. Please help.

Ok I have never tried that, as this is the first time it is suggested to me.
The reason i have been doing it via DU, is because this has been to only way to get it to play on
home DVD player and burn with the UDF setting. I was told to do it this way when I was trying to burn
copies of my nieces fifteens that was prof. done on a DVD.
I am trying to burn a copy of a movie so that it can be played on home dvd players. Yes I have done this before and the copies I burned via DU/new image, worked perfectly. And the ones I burned by just choosing file and burning it did not work.
So any help would be great.

  • Can Disk Utility make a "New Image" from a desktop copy of a DVD?

I have not been able to get Disk Utility to make "new images" of a couple of DVDs. For one of the DVDs, it may have something to do with a hyphen in the title. I haven't a clue why I'm failing with the second of the two DVDs. (Previously, I've had no trouble with about a dozen DVDs so far.)
Several members of this discussion group recommended me to copy&paste or drag&drop the files from a DVD to a new folder (say on the desktop), and then to drag the resulting new folder into the box in Disk Utility, and then to make a disk image using Disk Utility.
(Note: While I believe the original DVDs are not encrypted, I ran an experiment to make double sure, by using MacTheRipper first to produce folders containing clean files.)
However, when I drag the new folder into the box in Disk Utility, and let go of the mouse button, then the folder does not stay in Disk Utility window, but instead springs back to the desktop.
How can I get Disk Utility to make new images from the new desktop folders?
    Note:
As a partially successsful work around:
For one of the two original DVDs - which has only about 3.7GB on it - I can sometimes (only sometimes) succeed in doing without Disk Utility simply by dragging the audio and video files from the new desktop folder onto a blank DVD, and then burning that DVD. However, in an average of about two out of every three attempts so far, my Mac rejects the new disk as unusable during the burn process.
For the other original DVD - which has about 4.36GB on it - the contents of the new desktop folder won't fit onto a blank DVD. It then gets messy - shrinking the files - so I'd like to avoid all of that by getting DIsk Utility to work properly.

For the answer, see the following excerpt from my own posting dated 2 May 2006, i.e.:
"I finally found out for myself (from Disk Utility Help) that to make a new image from a file/folder, rather than dragging the folder to the Disk Utility pane, in the top menu bar in Disk Utility you select Images/New/Image from Folder."

  • How do you use disk utility to burn a bootable .iso dvd?

Anybody have a clue on how you use disk utility to burn a .iso bootable dvd disk?
I'm trying to install windows 7 rc into virtual box in OS X 10.5.7 and cannot figure out how to do this. I've already installed the windows 7 beta in virtual box and was able to make a bootable dvd disk with the .iso file on it but have no clue how I did this.
I've been searching the web but most tips are for older version of OS X.
    Thanks to anybody who answers.

It's so easy, You can just burn an .iso file using DVD Creator Std instead of Disk Utility, only 3 steps to finish bur ning your .iso files:

  • Using Disk Utility to burn cd's but not compatible with PC Windows

I'm using disk utility to back up files/photos. I use disk utility because I need to append the cd with multiple burning sessions. My problem is that the burned disc will not read in Windows PC environment.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You are correct. Discs burned with Disk Utility (single or multi-session) are not Windows compatible.
The only way to burn Windows compatible discs with OS X is via the Finder.
Other utilities, like Toast, will easily make Windows compatible discs.

  • Using Disk Utility to burn DVD

My burn option spped is 1x, 4x and maxium speed. What is the best speed here to burn my DVD from disk utility?

Set it for Maximum Speed. If there's a problem (which there shouldn't) bring it down a notch.

  • Using Disk Utility to restore an image stored on the network

    Hello --
I have a disk image, Image.dmg. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, Disk utility is able to restore this image from a firewire drive to an internal drive.
Image.dmg is also on a network share, hosted via AFP. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, select "Restore," and specify that share as the source:
    afp://172.28.40.XX/Image_Share/Image.dmg
    I get this message:
"You must authenticate in order to restore."
I imagine that the server would like for me to log on before giving me access to the share. However, Disk Utility doesn't provide me with an authentication dialog.
    Any ideas?

Can't really tell if you are trying to restore an image from a locally attached firewire drive or (as from the original poster of the message) from a remotely shared location. If you are restoring from a remote share location then have you tried:
    afp://username:[email protected]/Image_Share/Image.dmg
Replacing username and password with the account information which has access to that remote share location.
    Good luck,
    TK

  • Disk Utility hangs during new image

Probably a corrupted SDHC, but usually the sane cards copy fine. Last two have hung half way through although the progress bar seems active.
They both play OK in the camera so media is intact. I realise this is a bit blind but is there something I can do to check this?
    Keith

    Are they movies or pic's...?
I import everything into iPhoto and iMovie, then backup my Libraries to multiple external hard drives using CarbonCopyCloner.
If I just wanted to copy files from one SD card to another. I would either drag n drop copy the files to my desktop and then copy them to the new card. Or get a second USB external card reader and simply drag n drop copy the files from one card to the other.
If I only wanted to backup the SD cards and not move the files to my Mac, I would simply drag n drop the media files from the SD cards to an external hard drive.

  • Getting medium write error on burning a disc image using Disk utility

Have a MacBrook Pro 15 inch, circa Summer 2007, using OX 10.4.11. up until recently (as in before February) have been able to burn DVD's using Toast (message Medium Writer Error). Started getting problems where the burn failed. Thought maybe it was Toast, so I tried creating an iDVD project and tried to burn the DVD using that, and it stopped in the middle as well and then spit the disk out with no error message.
, this time I tried creating a disc image, and used disk utility to burn. The process looked like it was going to work but then failed with a message that I have a medium write error.
I have no problems burning a regular data disk on my superdrive so I am thinking it's maybe a software glitch rather than hardware. . Any thoughts, as to what could be causing this problem all of a sudden. By the way, there are other users out there, who seems to be having DVD burning problems all of a sudden, but most people suggest other media. I am using the same stack of DVD-R's from before when I had no problem.

Well, I had assumed my media was ok, since I had a spindle of DVD-R's and had used many of them successfully (until now!, ha ha).
I went out this afternoon and bought another brand (Memorex) and it successfully recorded.
So hopefully this solves my problem, I had no idea it was the media since I had used several of them before.
    Thanks for your help.

  • When ripping a DVD, is the original DVD damaged (using Disk Utility)?

A friend wants me to make copies of a couple DVDs of her new baby to send to family, but she's keeping the original DVD for herself. Before I use Disk Utility to burn it to a new disc (using the "New Image" method), I wanted to make sure the original copy will not be damaged in any way. After I rip it, the disc will play normally when she puts it in her computer/dvd player, right?
I apologize if this is not the correct community or something--I wasnt quite sure where it fit in.

    It’ll remain as is.

  • Burn a data cd using disk utility

Ok, all I want to do it burn a data cd using disk utility. Everything I read talks about "disk images" and "ISO's" how do I just pick a file and burn it? When I go into disk utility and click burn all of my files are transparent and I can't select any of them. How do I simply burn files?

    Hi,
You shouldn't need to use Disk Utility to burn a plain data CD/DVD.
Have a read of this article on how to do it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh854.html
    Hope that helps.

  • Disk Utility not burning DVDs properly

I am using Disk Utility to burn a disk image to DVD, and it isn't working properly. It goes from 'opening session' to 'writing track' to closing session in a matter of 10 seconds, and then it freezes.
I am burning this same .img file on my Mac Mini and my iMac, and everything is working the way it should. I have tried recopying the file and running the burn directly from the original file, and it still won't work on the MBP.
    Any suggestions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

    Hi mdfrancois;
The lasers used in optical drives gradually lose power. Some more rapidly then others. If the output is too low then the optical drive would be classified as marginal.

  • Error using Disk Utility 'New Image'

I keep trying to make a new image of DVD's using Disk Utility, but it keeps giving me an error message. I'm at work right now and can't remember the specific message, but I've tried several times and it keeps interrupting the process. I've made copies before without any problems, then all of a sudden this started. I still have about 26 gigs free on the hard drive, and these discs are nowhere near that much memory. Anybody have this problem or know how to solve it?

I was able to extract the video from DVD to .m4v format using handbrake. I still could not get iMovie to recognize the file. I then changed the .m4v to .mov and it was recognized. Once I edited my movie I did not realize that sharing would take sooo long to burn back to iDVD. I had a 56 min video clip and it took 3-4 hours to share. I was up all night, but I have a DVD to turn in for my ALCMS training video. Hope this helps!
