Using DropBox to Sync Address Book -- Mystery!

I've read several postings online about using DropBox to sync AddressBook between two Macs. The process involves moving the AddressBook folder from Library/Application Support to DropBox on the primary Mac, deleting it from the folder on the secondary Mac, and then creating symlinks from the folder in DropBox to the Application Support folders on each of the two Macs.
Seems both simple and logical. But I've been trying for a week and it almost works -- but not quite. I'm stumped.
*The "Almost" Part*
1) If I change or add a picture to a contact on one computer, the picture instantly syncs and appears with the contact on the other computer.
2) If I edit a contact or add a new contact, DropBox activates on both computers and says that the data file has been changed on both machines.
*The "Mystery" Part*
Although the DropBox link appears to be active, and although both Macs are getting their information from the folder in DropBox (both have only symlinks in the Library), the data never changes. I can add a new contact on computer #1 and it never shows up on computer #2. I can change a phone number or a note on a contact on computer #2 and it never shows up on computer #1 -- despite the fact that the new picture for that contact syncs with no problem.
Can anybody explain this? Since the two machines are sharing the same AddressBook folder in DropBox, and since the connection works well enough to update photos, why does the data never sync?
All suggestions welcomed!
+(And yes, I'm careful not to run the Address Book on both machines simultaneously -- so it's not an issue of two programs trying to access the same data at the same time. One is a desktop at my office, the other a laptop used only on weekends or while traveling when the desktop is off.)+

Hi, I can't imagine what is doing it, but since nobody has replied yet, I'll throw this out...
Have you tried "Look for Duplicate Entries..." in the Card menu?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits  syncing only by iCloud.  Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes.  I don't want to use iCloud.  Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting  citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in  the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US  Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will  interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do  not want that either.
I  chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have  relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can  no longer do that.
Whoever  made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about  the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by  this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.
In the meantime - thanks for the work around

My MacBook Pro will not sync address book changes with my IPhone.  Why?  It used to.

Then you may have to try manually resetting the syncservices folder by following Julian Write's post (from https://discussions.apple.com/message/9274781#9274781):
Ok, as you can't reset SyncServices in the "normal" way, you'll have to resort to the "other" way:
Although it's not advised to do so in normal circumstances, you'll need to manually delete the SyncServices folder.
Before doing so, you MUST make a backup of both your Contacts and Calendars:
In Address Book, choose *Export > Address Book Archive...* from the File menu.
In iCal, choose *Back up iCal...* from the File menu.
Then, make a backup of the SyncServices folder located at:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
By backing everything up first, you don't risk losing anything.
Finally delete the aforementioned SyncServices folder and restart the Mac. This will force Mac OS X to recreate the SyncServices folder, and hopefully fix your problem.
I believe in Snow Leopard you can back up your calendar in File>Export>iCal Archive rather than File>Back up iCal as posted above.

  • Syncing Address Book to IPod Classic

Problem: Syncing Address Book to my iPod Classic 80 (using iMac, bought new Dec. 2007)
I have tried again and again to sync my Address Book to the iPod; with always the same weird results.
    1. When I sync my iPod to the Address Book, only seven contacts of 166 appear on the iPod - THIS is the problem.
    2. On the iTunes Contacts page I have checked; ‘Sync Address Book’ and ‘All Contacts’.
    3. During syncing the window states that it is syncing contacts.
    4. In the list of ‘Selected Groups’ (I always have ‘All Contacts’ checked) groups appear that I have deleted in Address Book.
    5. I used Bento in the past, and didn’t like it; I have moved Bento from the application folder to the Trash. Could Bento be interfering somehow?
    6. On Preferences I have tried vCard 3.1 and 2.0, neither worked - 3.1 is currently selected.
    7. In Address Book, I did an archive backup. And then restored with the archive, no difference, with the sync. The restore worked fine in Address Book.
    8. As a test, in Address Book I deleted one of the seven contacts, that do appear on the iPod (see 1. above); then synced; it still appears on my iPod - the contact that won’t die.
    9. Syncing of Calendars works fine.
    10. I have tried resetting the iPod. Still no difference after syncing, still only seven contacts appear, including the deleted one.
    11. Where is the data for the Address Book stored on the computer? If I deleted all the data files in Address Book, would that help? Would the files rebuild themselves with the restore archive?
    12. The iPod software is up to date.
    13. Resetting the iPod did not change anything.
    14. I did the sync manually - syncing only Contacts, still only seven contacts.
What can I do? Any ideas would be appreciated. Using the iPod for contacts would very useful - I really do not want to buy another device or a cell phone (PDA) that also stores addresses.
    Thanks, Diane

OK - Now we have some progress. I did as suggested and 'Reset Sync History', The seven contacts on the iPod are gone! However, it still is not syncing up my contacts. I reset the iPod, tried manually, restarted the computer, etc. - it didn't help. Thank you for the suggestion.
    Thank You, Diane

  • What is the best way to sync Address Book contacts?

    Please help!
I run a small Mac network and I need to sync all (we have 8 Macs) the Mac's Address Book's with each other and also with 5 different iPhones. We have a Mac Server running Tiger and all the Macs are running Tiger. 4 of the Macs are Intel. The server is PowerPC.
At the moment I am just using 1 .Mac account to sync to them all, but this is causing many problems with duplications, errors and 'stress!'
The reason for the above setup is money. But, as the problems continue and the syncing become more important, money is now allowed to be spent.
My question really is, as the subject header says, 'What is the best way to sync Address Book contacts?' In the past I have tried XC Connect, and a few other apps, but with the introduction of the iPhones, the setup has become more complex.
If I were to buy all new Intel Macs and an Intel Mac Server all running Snow Leopard, would the 'Address Book Server' do the job? I have found very little information on the net and the information I did find was all negative.
Is there something Leopard can do that Tiger can't? Is Tiger nolonger a good enough system to try and run an Address Book network?
Does anybody else out there in the Mac world have a similar setup to mine, and if so, how do you have your setup.
Incidentally, ALL users, incuding iPhone users, need read & write access to the Address Book!!
Any solutions or suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks in advance

Oh, I meant Leopard does do more than Tiger Server.
I don't know enough about Server, even less abut Syncing.
SL is to new, not enough time to iron out the kinks yet imho.
One day SL will be better than Leo, but...
    I'd ask over in server...
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96
    Or perhaps Collaboration Services...

They may even have a different opinion on SL.

  • How to sync Address book with iphone(iOS 6) and 10.7.4?

How to sync Address book with iphone(iOS 6) and 10.7.4

i'm having this issue too.  it's a bit more complex though i think so i'll give the details:
a few days ago i added some people to my contacts using my phone. the thing they have in common is they're all new contacts.
they synced over to my macbook address book ok.
then a few days later i had to do a full restore of my iphone for various reasons (the new one, already!) which i did. when i then looked in my iphone contacts, these contacts were no longer there. they WERE however, still in my macbook address book.
so i figured i'd switch icloud syncing off for contacts and then resync to get them back on my phone. it didn't work. so i then turned off icloud sync and tried a good old manual sync via itunes, making sure to check the box for syncing contacts.  it still didn't work.
now i'm at that odd place where the contacts are in my macbook address book but not in my phone and i can't seem to get them onto my phone (which is frustrating as ultimately they are phone numbers and in my phone is the best place for them!)
    any ideas?

  • How to sync Address book with iphone on 10.5, while iphone synced with iCloud?

My mac runs leopard 10.5.8. Meanwhile iPhone is updated to 5.1. and synced with iCloud. As we know, OS X 10.5 can not be synced with iCloud. How to sync Address book with iphone? My Address Book on my mac has almost all contacts that can be found on my iPhone. Even with pictures from FB and extra info such as twitter accounts, etc.
The question is - how can I manage my contacts? Now I have added several new entries to my iPhone, but they won't appear on mac's address book. In iTunes the contacts sync box is unchecked due to the fact that iPhone syncs with iCloud. But then I'm wondering where did Address Book get all the contact updates that were made on iPhone?
I'd like to control this whole thing. And is there such thing as one data base, that could used by all devices and would change entries on all of them, if I change or add something on my iPhone?
Or I just have to get Lion and let the iCloud do the magic?
    Thanks,
    Lauris

I just synced my new iPhone (iOS 5.0.1) with the Address Book on my Mac which runs 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.5.2. I launched iTunes and then I connected the iPhone to the Mac. It appeared on the DEVICES list in the left column in iTunes. I selected it and then the Summary screen appeared in the right part of the iTunes window.
In the Backup section of the Summary you can choose whether to 'Back up to iCloud' or 'Back up to this computer'. Even if you have 'Back up to iCloud' selected, there is a 'Sync' button in the bottom right hand corner of the iTUnes window where you can manually initiate a sync with the Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    Dave

  • Ipod nano does not sync address book...

So, I got a nano for christmas and it rocks, but does not sync address book- I can drop the vcards into the addresses folder using the nano in drive mode, but when i try to sync through itunes i get an error message-' address book unable to sync because no addresses are available' Any clues how to keep the addresses updated without having to drag&drop everything into the addresses folder? thanks for any advice- h1

I also am having trouble syncing contacts and iCal. Worked fine on my last iPod for years. But the nano displays contacts and calendars about 50% of the time, and I never know if it's worked or not until I disconnect and start up my ipod. When it does sync contacts, it usually says it only has room for a portion of them, even though there's plenty of room on my iPod. I've restored the iPod many times, and that sometimes works for a while, but the problem always returns. A shame, because I love using my iPod for my calendar and contacts. Now I had to switch to my stupid phone because of how unreliable the iPod is proving. Fix this soon, please, Apple!

  • Sync address book with Google Problems

I have just enabled the option to sync my address book with my Google contacts account. Before i sync'd i deleted everything in the google contacts as it was way out of date, The sync process appeared to have worked as all contact info from address book appears in my google account, but then i get a message indicating that more than 20% of the contacts in the OSX Address book are going to be changed, how can this be? ...
    Any ideas??
    thx
    John

John, I believe the answer lies in the subtle differences between contact fields used and populated by Address Book, and those used and populated by Google Contacts: they do not utilize the same fields for what, on the surface, appears to be the same info. For example, if your Address Book entry contains two words in the last name field, Google imports this as one word for middle name and one word for last name. The sync back from Google to Address Book results in "duplicate" entries, and the warning message that your Address Book entries will be changed.
I just spent two days trying to get this to work the way I wanted it to (I just got a new phone that syncs with Google Contacts. I did just what you did and found just what you discovered. It drove me nuts.
I concluded it what possible to line it all up between the two, but the amount of manual actions necessary on my part was not, for me, worth the time expended to do it. That's as far as I got.

  • Sync Address Book with Yahoo Address book?

    Hi there,
just wondering if its possible to some how sync Address Book with Yahoo Address book?
That is... I have an elaborate Address Book setup on Yahoo, I'd like it so that if I use Yahoo Address Book and create/delete contacts that when I get home and use Address Book, Address Book syncs the contacts structure to the yahoo structure, without me manually intervening...
Is this possible or is there a tool/widget that does this already?
    Thanks

while looking for somehting else, i found something here in the discussions that might do the trick. it involves another web-based address book, but might work for you. try getting the plaxo address book plug-in, and then sync your yahoo contacts with plaxo, and then sync that with address book. i'm not sure of the order that would give you the best results, but i'm working on using plaxo as an online backup of my address book, as i will most-likely not be using plaxo otherwise.
my concern for you would be whether one would write over the other, so back up your address book first, or even export the entire thing as a vcard file to your desktop, and then you can re-import and merge them... that way you can sync with your yahoo account, and then add whatever is already in your address book and merge whatever is necessary.
search here in the discussions for the plaxo plug-in, and see if that sounds like it would work for you. the only issue i have right now is that it seems that the plaxo install has somehow affected my icalfix plug-in, but i'll look into fixing that this weekend, i'm sure i just need to move some plug-ins around.
    cheers,
    - jeremy

  • Sync address book from computer to phone

I want to sync my address book on my mac air to my iphone5 but itunes says it is going to use Microsoft Exchange to sync.  What does that mean?  I didn't do it cause it didn't seem right.

I thought that I did. In INFO>Contacts in my itunes it asked me to sync address book contacts. These contacts I do not care to have on my phone. But my phone contacts are not in my address book. How can I just sync my phone contacts to my computer. So when I restore it I can just sync those right back to my phone. I am not seeing an option for this.

  • Syncing Address Book contacts with iPod

I know some people will think this post should be in the iPod forum but I have realised that it is not my iPod beccasue I tried using a different iPod and the same problem happened. Anyway...the problem is that when I choose to sync Address Book contacts with iPod it comes up with this message:
    No contacts available
Contact syncinig cannot be enabled because there are no contacts available. Do you want to open Address Book and create contacts now?
And gives me the options: Cancel and Open Address Book
I have tried deleting several different preferences for iTunes, Address Book and iSync (just incase).
I don't know what else to do, I know I can manually add my contacts by exporting them all as a vCard but it would be so much easier if iTunes could do it. Please help if you know anything!

I've got Calenders syncing again, not sure how I did it. I deleted the one of the folders in /Users/Alex/Library/Application Support/SyncServices/Local/clientdata/
I found that in each folder there is a clientname.txt file with the name of what data is in the folder e.g. iCal, Safari, Keychain, Mail.
I deleted the iCal one and iTunes seems to be syncing it now. So I looked for a folder with Address Book in the clientname.txt file but there wasn't one. I am wondering whether that's the reason!

  • ITunes doesn't sync address book with contacts

Syncing IPad2 with IMac address book doesn't update groups and contacts on IPad.

If you're using Mobile Me, you can try this: On the iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contact, Calendars > Account Name. Turn OFF contacts syncing. The in iTunes on the computer, view the Info tab on the iPhone item page. You should now be able to check the Sync Address Book checkbox and then click the Sync button. This might work with non Mobile Me accounts too.

  • Preference for not using middle names from address book in emails

I have quite a few contacts that I have their middle names in my address book. When I type their name in a new email, their full name is displayed in the "To" field. I don't want the middle name to show up in my outgoing emails. I also don't want to delete everyones middle name from my address book. Are there any preferences or plugins that allow this behavior?
I also have some contacts that I have nicknames for...the most glaringly obvious being "Mom" and "Dad." I don't want to send an email to my parents with their name in the "To" field. Is there a plugin or a preference for this as well

    Greetings,
Sorry, but there's no way to do what you want. The only way to avoid using a middle name in the To: field is for you to delete that from your contact, and from the Previous Recipients list in Mail. The same would be true for those contacts where you have a nickname.
But ultimately, the name use by Mail and Address Book would be determined by the recipient when they send you an email; if they use their full name, that's what Address Book will change it to.
