Using DSS for home based video stock footage business

I have compiled a large library of underwater video and intend to start an online Stock Footage business. I'm trying to balance the pros and cons of having my site and streaming capability provided by commercial service providers (as I do now)...or to lease a T1, host my own site and use DSS.
Would appreciate any responses that help me make this decision. I'm not happy with my site's host service provide (APlus.net).

I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:

and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).

Is it possible to use Citrix for home-use and for free, Only one use?

I am a .Net developer so i need to have Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Windows for my Work, but i like iPad 2 in Tablets so that i bought one, Now in a video i have seen that Citrix is such a professional Desktop and App Virtualization that it seems Microsoft Windows is running on iOS, so i want to use it but not for business and just for home use, is it possible to set it up for free?

Citrix does not allow iOS to run Windows. Citrix products are one of several ways to connect an iOS device to a system that does run Windows and allow the iOS device to take control of that Windows system. Citrix, to the best of my knowledge, does not make their back-end products (i.e. the software that runs on the system to which you want to connect) available for free; it's usually quite expensive as it's intended for enterprise use.
Citrix for home use would almost certainly be vast overkill, though. Just do a web search for "VNC". VNC is a solution for Windows and iOS that would allow you to take control of your Windows system.

Use iChat for home monitoring

Hello. I would like to use the video portion of iChat for home monitoring. Is it possible to access my home iMac camera, through iChat, from my workplace? To make things interesting, my Mac monitor at work does not have a built in camera and I have no external webcam. Is it possible for me to connect to my home camera through iChat even though I have no camera at work?
I look forward to hearing any ideas.

I was setting up my home computer for automatic video monitoring through iChat when I noticed something in the energy settings in system preferences. I wanted to have my screen saver in use or turn the monitor brightness all the way down to save my screen life. I also wanted to keep my computer awake so that I could have access to the home iChat account and computer/camera. However, if I set my Display Sleep and Computer Sleep settings to "Never" sleep, I receive the notice of "Never letting your display go to sleep may shorten its life".
So it seems no matter what, I may shorten the life of my monitor and I would most likely be increasing energy consumption by keeping my monitor and computer awake while I am away from home.
Is there anyway around this? If I used Screen Share (VNC), or any dedicated software like Vitamin D or EvoCam, would I still need to worry about my computer's energy consumption? I suppose if I really wanted a dedicated video monitoring setup I could use an external camera and external computer or server? I've read that some people use a Mac Mini for this, but thats seems like a waste of a Mac mini to me. I was really just planning on doing this occasionally to check in on my apartment.
Thoughts?
I will probably only video monitor a couple of times a week, so maybe the energy settings are nothing to worry about.

Where-used list for class-based exception texts

With traditional exceptions, one can look at a message, go to SE91 and do a where-used for that particular message. This is not possible with ZCX classes, a where-used can be done for the entire class but there doesn't seem to be a way to find where individual exception texts are raised.
Now whilst exception classes do offer the possiblity of a far better structuerd approach that reduces the need for a where-used in first place, this is still a shortcoming of exception classes... or is it? (or am I missing some other way to search for it?)

D'Oh! That one was so obvious that I was blinded by it
(Believe it or not I've been using ex. classes for some time!)
However it still leaves another issue (which was actually the one that sparked this debate here in the office): In the old message concept it was far easier to navigate from an error to find the offending code. One could click on a message, see the message class/ID, drop into SE91 and (provided the where used is small enough) go straight to the offending code via a where-used.
Unless class-based exceptions are caught and re-raised as an old MESSAGE statement with a message number, this is not so simple anymore. Or is it?

Is it possible to use iChat for non network video conferanci

Hi all,
I am looking for a little help please. This may be a fruitless question, but here it goes. I have a deaf 5th grader. TTY relay is essentially a thing of the past, and all of her friends are using 'video phone' to keep in touch. Anyway, today we got a Sorenson VRS router and video phone camera from her school, and it uses our existing cable internet connection. It is a BUNCH of stuff to hook up to an already crowded system. Does anyone have any ideas about the possibility of using iChat for my daughter to connect to her friends that will be using a different system?
Sorry if this is the question of a Neophyte. I am learning this deaf world as i go.

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
I can tell you what iChat will do and maybe that will help.
iChat is an Instant Messaging service that uses the AIM servers. Therefore it is an AIM client.
AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger.
You can join this service in several ways.
1) By having the AOL Package where AOL is your Internet provider (ISP)
2) By having the stand alone Application referred on these Discussions as the AIM application (comes in several version for PC, Macs, Linux and phones although each version varies as to what it can do - see side bar at link page).
3) Or by another application that is also an AIM client.
On a Mac that can be Proteus or AdiumX, there are PC AIM clients like Trillian.
Some AIM clients only do some of the features.
FOr instance iChat to PC AIM can Video (Moving Pics and Sound) but not Audio only.
iChat to Trillian on a PC can do both Video and Audio only if the PC end has the Pro version of Trillian ($25)
All clients can at least Text chat.
Many can send files and pics as well as Text chatting.
iChat can support Text chatting, Audio Chats and Video chats. Any USB Mic will work for Audio chats. Many Firewire DV Camcorders also work, many Firewire Webcams also work and some USB cams can be made to work with iChat.
To do this iChat needs a fast enough Mac (Procesor speed) and a fast enough interent Connection Speed.
In iChat 2 there is felt to be a better chance of success with connections to PC machines running either AIM (or the AOL package) or Trillian Pro for Video chats.
Text chats and Video chats can be done to the same Buddy (contact) at the same time. I would have thought this would be ideal as it provides a chance to practice lip reading skills and not missing any of the info.
What iChat 2 can not do.
1) Chat to other services like MSN or Yahoo!
2) Chat or link to Video phones.
3) Video to Mobile (cell) phones.
4) Connect to other Video conferencing services.

Using XSan for Home Directories

I'm having trouble setting my XSan drive as a destination for home directories.
When I log in it says the directory is unavailable, and it hasn't created it. If I allow everyone read/write access to the share it creates a home containing only a desktop and library folder with none of the files from the user template.
What am I doing wrong? I'm using Active Directory for authentication, both the XSan Primary Controller and secondary controller are bound, and the secondary is an Open Directory Master and resharing the Xsan drive for user directories. If I use a server local drive all works fine.

Apple's plan for home movies/videos

I do enough video to make about 4 DS DVDs a year.
Going through the forums, I read that Apple thinks that cd, dvd & Blu Ray media are passe.
But I can find no reference on what Apple thinks users are going to keep their home videos on.
Do they really expect that users are going to post everything on youtube?
Do they think that we are going to store everything on flash drives (sticks)? They might be coming down in price, but they ain't cheap.
They really can't expect everything to be stored on drives & cloud, can they? Oh yes, I trust that icloud will never lose any of my stuff. Maybe. I would imagine that more people have dvd players than those with unlimted free high speed internet.

Chart your own course. If you want your home videos to be watched by family and friends burn a DVD and mail it to them. I find iMovie and iDVD to be a terrific combination. Both are tested for compatibility with the latest Mac OS.

Best strategy for ID based video source with a plugin

What would be the best strategy to load a video file based on an ID instead of source URL. The plugin would use a webservice to lookup the ID and retrieve the url for the video. The ID would be passed to the player via a flashvar.

Rsync used STRICTLY for "photos and video" library back-up

Hi,
I'm hoping to get some guidance from some experienced users of rsync.
I'm new to rsync, but have been learning about it.   I'm also new to Terminal.
.....**For full system back-ups, I use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner)....clean and simple.**
However, for my large "photo & video library" (over 1 TB on an external drive), I found that CCC, while essentially doing the same as rsync, seems to take MUCH longer. Rsync, on the other hand, is very fast.
This leads me to FIVE questions.
Q1: Is this because CCC (which uses the rsync command, albeit modified), is doing a check-sum or sometime else behind the scenes?
Also, looking through the various command lines that other contributors have suggested when using rsync, I am a little confused as to which optional commands are necessary for a PURELY "photo and video" library.
For the optional commands, I think the ones that are a MUST for me are:
-a - "archive" rsync, includes ownership info and extended attributes extremely useful for moving large volumes of data and keeping AD/OD/POSIX permissions intact
-v - "verbose" gives the user more information on the rsync display
-x - prevents crossing filesystem boundaries
-t - preserves modified time
--delete
This tells rsync to delete any files on the receiving side that aren't on the sending side. Files that are excluded from transfer are excluded from being deleted
....Optionally, I could add the following to view the progress:
--stats
This tells rsync to print a verbose set of statistics on the file transfer, allowing you to tell how effective the rsync algorithm is for your data.
Q2: Is there anything else I should be adding?
Q3: Also, I saw that one contributor used "bash" at the start of the command line. Is this necessary for my specific purpose?
Q4: Snow Leopard comes with rsync version 2.6.9 version 29.   I know that version 3.1.0 is already out, but this would require an installation step (possibly using come Terminal commands, or something like "MacPort"), then adding patches, and perhaps some steps that I haven't mentioned. Is version 3.1.0 really necessary, and in what way? Much faster? Better Integrity of the back-up? Other? (o.k., that was more than one question)
Q5: Is there a command to preserve the "CREATED" time of the photo? Is this taken care of by the " -a " or the " -t "?

     -N, --crtimes               preserve create times (newness)

Here's what I do:
1. Download and unarchive rsync and its patches
    a. Move patches directory to rsync-3.1.0
    b. cd rsync-3.1.0
2. Apply patches relevant to preserving Mac OS X metadata
       patch -p1 <patches/fileflags.diff
       patch -p1 <patches/crtimes.diff
3. Apply patch relevant to preserving Mac OS X hfs+compression
      patch -p1 <patches/hfs-compression.diff
4. Configure, make, install
        ./prepare-source
        ./configure
        make
        sudo make install
5. Verify your installation
      rsync --version
By default, rsync will be installed in /usr/local/bin.
If that isn't in your path, you will need to call
your new version of rsync by its absolute
path in /usr/local/bin (you will most likely need to do this
and --version will verify that you have the right version)

No disadvantages that I'm aware of.
I'm not sure what defaults that Mike is using now, but most of the the flags that I use and posted are from the link above from Mike a few years ago.

How to Use JNI for linux based C programs

I am doing my project in JAVA for my Institute. There is a Central server. All the API's have written in C. The C APIs are Linux based.
The problem is getting records from the database through API.
I tried the Java Native Methods. I am able to do that in console with out problem. Since my project is web based I want to fetch the records through the C APIs in JSP. Is it possible? How to do that?

Basic process.
1. Write the JNI
2. Insure the JNI is in the servers shared library path. This can depend on the user that the server runs under (unlikely to be you.)
3. Add the java code into the server.

Best settings for using PE7 for a Kickstarter video?

I'm working on a video for a kickstarter campaign using PE7, with video from my Flip Mino HD. My basic question is what set-up and output settings produce the best quality video for online? Here's what a Kickstarter video should look like.
The video from the Flip is HD, MPEG-4, widescreen. It shows up on PE7 with NO red lines and plays fine there.
The Kickstarter frame appears to be 560px x 420px. They accept MOV, MPEG, AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, FLV, with the max. size of 200MB. They also suggest bitrates of around 1500.
I assume I should use the EXPORT function for more choices, rather than the SHARE one? What setting do you suggest?
When I've exported in MOV, MP4, AVI or WMV, I get data on top of the video. Never had this problem before. How do I get rid of it?

If you're editing video from a Flip camcorder, you'll need to upgrade to version 9, the first version of Premeire Elements to support this type of video. No previous version is going to work well with it.
As for output, I'd recommend you use thse output settings. Most likely Kickstarter will accept this video and then automatically convert it to the format necessary for the site.
From the Share tab, choose Computer and then QuickTime/MOV. Choose the DV preset and then click the Advanced button.
From the settings window, do the following:
Video Tab
*Video Codec: H.264
*Quality: 100
*Frame Wdith: 855
*Frame Height: 480
*Frame Rate: 29.97
*Field Type: Progressive
*Pixel Aspect Ratio: square
*Set Bitrate: checked
*Bitrate: 8000 kbps
Audio Tab
*Audio Code: AAC
*Output Channels: Stereo
*Frequency: 44kHz

Naming images using 'Save for Web' based on layer name

Hope someone can help, I'm a bit stumped!
I've got a PSD in Photoshop CS4 which is for some T-Shirt Designs. I have 15 colours of shirts, all on 15 different layers. Then I have the design of the t-shirt on the top layer. I want to create 15 images with the design shown on each of the 15 shirt colours.
Is it possible to automate the saving of the files? ie Always have the top layer (the shirt design) on, but save a file with just one of the shirt layers on, and save the file so the filename reflects the layer name?
I seem to recall Imageready doing something like this, though maybe it was in the Animation section, its been a while :-)

How do I get a Logitech c615 to work with web-based video chat sites? Works with Skype, Face Time, etc. Can select it in Chrome browser but still uses builtin cam. Would use the builtin cam but your adjustments are tilting/twisting the monitor and moving closer/farther from the monitor. Really?! Is it possible to set an external camera as default for web-based video or is it yet another regret I have from switching from PC?

on a related topic - I have the same camera but I can't hear people when I facetime - it's ok with Skype though
