Using DVD Studio Pro theater template in Motion: Masking question

I'm wanting to use the video of the theater interior used in the DVD Studio Pro theater menu template in a Motion project. I'm wondering if there is a 'quick and dirty' way to mask out the black portion that appears when the curtains open, which is used as a 'drop zone' in the DVDSP menu (basically, wanting to get the same 'reveal' effect as I would get in DVDSP) or if I have to mask it frame by frame.
Thanks!

Yes...except that's what I tried with the curtain earlier today, and what I got was....very strange. Instead of the the transition of shape that I had keyed, I got what was essentially the final set of points moving and warping in a very strange pattern.
I'll try it again (and not be as anal and do every frame...try skipping to every second...or half second, so I don't go completely cold turkey).
Thanks...wanted to make sure I was correct in how I thought it should work. (the art of masking is the one thing that just does not want to sink into this pooh brain of mine...)

  • What program makes the DVD Studio Pro 4 Templates? Motion?

I was wondering what software the designers used to make some of the beautiful templates. Please let me know of some suggestions, or on how to make motion menu screens. Does everyone use motion here?

    Hey George, sure thing
(by the way, if you don't mind, giving a helpful rating to a
response gives my forum profile a boost, if you take a moment
to mark a response as helpful or solved...)
anyhoo, here's two approached for doing your own
take on a Template you like (One Long, one short)
    1) Take a screenshot of the DVDSP Template you like using
the free Mac OSX Utility app "Grab" or an app like Snapz ProX
    2) In Photoshop or a program like it, do a mockup of
that Template throwing in your own design ideas,
    using layers help.
    3) Create a separate layer in the Photoshop doc that
simply creates shapes (best if they're square/rectangular)
that act as the size/placeholders of the buttons
    4) Do into DVDSP and simply create a New Menu,
choose Overlay and bring this Photoshop mockup as
a background, bringing in all Layers (not flattening it) including the Normal state of the buttons and the separate layer with the shapes
(Normal = the buttons the DVD user 1st sees when they go
to the Menu and before they make a selection)
    5) Then simply assign the Overlay to your Photoshop layer
that has the shapes (note: these are different than the
normal states of the buttons as they actually tell DVDSP
to treat the overlay (aka functionality) to these shapes
voila, you have your own custom-made menu
A shorter approach would be to apply a Template in DVDSP
and start re-arranging certain elements, although there's
not as much control if you were to start from scratch
    with your own Photoshop
keep in mind, there is also the option to do
a Layered Menu as opposed to an Overlay Menu,
which is cool in that it acts more like a website menu
(e.g. you hit a hyperlink that automatically updates
a line of text or image on the very same page) but
Layered Menus react slower for the DVD user and cannot
have Audio or Video in them
hope that gives you a running start
    cheers

  • Help.. First Time Using DVD Studio Pro!!

OK .. this is my first time using DVD Studio Pro. Before this I have always used IDVD for my Final Cut Projects, but I now need to branch out!
I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I've watched the video tutorials and tried to read the instruction manual, but it's heavy going!!!.. can someone help me get over the hump?
    Here's where I've got to:
    - In my Assets tab I have my two file - Test.mov QT Video File and Test.mov QT Audio file. Both are yellow uncompressed video. I also have a templates folder.
    - I chose the template called brush cover which I can see under the menu tab on a window. If I go to that same window and select the graphical tab I can see a menu 1 and track 1.
    - In my timeline I have dragged my Video and adui assets over and can see them and actually play the movie.
    - What is also worth mentioning is that I can also see the 18 chapter markers that I created in FCP.
    - Now I hit the brick wall!!.
    - Back in my menu I see 8 buttons. In my timeline I have 18 chapters. How do I transfer my 18 chapters over to my menu so that I have 18 buttons each one representing a chapter?
    - I'm sure that it's obvious and a silly question.. but for a rookie like me who's trying to figure this out from scratch it's not easy!
Thanks for any advise!!.. also if anyone has a good 'idiot's guide' for ex iDVD people moving to DVD Pro then I'd really appreciate it!
    Many Thanks!
    Steve.

You can duplicate your 8 buttons menu so many time as you need to include your 18 chapters, creating a simple new button to navigate through Chapter Menu1, Chapter Menu2, etc.
Or you can duplicte&resize buttons to fit more of them in a single menu, but 18 button chapters could be too much for a comfortable navigation.

You can use the Search feature in this forum and almost for sure you'll find any answer you need, in particular for basic stuff.
You can visit Drew13's site [DVD Step by Step|http://www.dvdstepbystep.com] for some good tutorials, and Drew13 uses to stay tuned here to help you too!
And sometimes Google helps too !

  • DVD STUDIO PRO 4 TEMPLATES QUALITY

Is there anyone out there that uses DVD Studio Pro 4 without problems. When using the templates both the text and stills are grainy or pixelated. As a test I created a movie and stills in FCP imported them into DVDSP, the movie quality superb, the text and stills for the menus - rubbish. I then used the same content in iDVD - perfect menus. It is really annoying when you invest in Pro software and the results aren't as good as you get with a freebie!
Is there something obvious I am doing wrong?

Can't tell from your post if you're looking at your DVDSP project on your Mac or you have finished the project, burned the DVD, and are watching it on a tv set top box.
To answer your first question, yes, I have no such issues with DVDSP4, I use some of the templates but not many, I usually change the typefaces, though. I have never used iDVD so I can't tell you if the results are superior in that product.

  • How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?

I had somebody create a DVD for me using DVD Studio Pro. (This was a compilation of many different videos.) It turned out great.
I now want to make a DVD of one of those videos on my own using iDVD '08.
I have the raw video/audio files. But, my problem is the raw files that were used for the DVD Studio Pro project are separated into one video file and one audio file. I don't know how I can get them both into iDVD. I was told that I have to recombine these two files into one file. But, how do I do this and still maintain the best quality?
(I am not a video expert by any means, but I can tell you that the video file is a ".mpeg" and the audio file is an ".ac3". When looking at the .mpeg file in the finder it lists its Kind as "MPEG Movie" and when looking at the .ac3 file in the finder it lists its Kind as "Unix Executable File".)
(I'm using iDVD 7.0.1 - I do have Quicktime Pro - I do not have the Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback component - I do not have DVD Studio Pro)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Q: How Do I Use DVD Studio Pro Files In iDVD?
    A: You don't, essentially.
DVDSP is apple's top end app and it is intended to be used with FCP > Compressor > DVDSP. All of these are pro apps.
i-Apps are consumer apps all of which are QT based. With that in mind ....
now that doesn't mean you can't use FCP > iDvd. You can. But you have to do it in a way that iDvd will read all the files (meaning you must think in terms of QuickTime and export in this way). So when you export your QT File / Movie from FCP over to iDvd, it will look something like this hopefully regardless of the raw image & audio files you have already compiled which unfortunately will NOT work with i-Apps BUT will work with apple's pro apps which is the intended workflow / direction of said files in the first place.
Btw ... if your QT movie has chapter markers then please use the following settings so iDvd can read these markers. (if on the other hand you were looking to export this file to DVDSP; then you would choose DVDSP Markers.
Let me know if the above helps. If not, just come on back.

It means your file is too large to fit on a single layer disk.
Recompress to keep the overall size (audio, video and menus) below 4.5GB

Start by using this to make sure your assets really fit on the disk:

Thanks.  Unfortunately, I need to make a master DVD that can then be duplicated in bulk as a single layer disc.  This surprises me because I tried burning a different DVD project that has worked in the past which is also 4.5 GB and now I could not burn that either.  I also reencoded some material to get the new project down to 4.4 GB but it still would not burn.  Any ideas are appreciated.

  • Making a .EVO and .MAP file using DVD studio Pro..............

I am trying to make a .EVO and .MAP file using DVD Studio Pro. Please dont respond to this if you have no idea what this is. Dealing in real HD situaiton....trying to find a quick and dirty way to make these files as placeholders, was hoping DVD studio Pro could do it. Thanks.

you cant make them using DVD Studi pro, since they are for TRULY 1080p (23.98fps) projects using vc1.
funny thing is if you know about these files, you would also KNOW that DVDSP does not do this!
i have seen this files on the toshiba GUI but have not seen them with the blu-ray authroing compile.
also, i am going to have to say that if you are TRULY "Dealing in real HD situaiton." you wouldnt NEED DVDSP.
so ease up with the chip and if you have a REAL question ask it, if yo uare just here to show your feathers.. not interested!

  • What compressor settings settings are best for 1080i  to output to DVD using DVD Studio pro?

What compressor settings settings are best for 1080i  to output to DVD using DVD Studio pro? I used FCP 6, exported using Quick Time.

DVDs are only SD. There was at one time HD-DVDs, which DVD SP and Compressor can make, but HD-DVDs will only play in Macs and, now obsolete HD-DVD players. HD-DVDs will not play back in standard DVD players or Blu-Ray players. If you want to make a "DVD will be played on DVD player for TV" disc, your only choice is SD.
If you want HD video on a disc, then you want Blu-Ray. You will need a Blu-Ray burner (Apple does not make a Blu-Ray burner so you will have to buy a third-party Blu-Ray burner), Blu-Ray discs and software that will make a Blu-Ray disc. That could be the latest version of Compressor, or FCPX, or Toast, or Encore.

  • Modifying DVD Studio Pro Apple template's

I have a DVD Studio Pro question regarding how to modify DVD Studio Pro Apple template's with out loosing their key atributes of menu page quantity calculation and button advance direction flow. The Apple templet I was trying to modify was "Portfolio".

To what extent did you need to change it?
If you are wanting to add additional items to the existing template, then this is not a problem... just add what you need. If you want to change the background image then this too is probably possible. Apply the template, look in the assets tab, open the folder called 'Templates' and look for the file you want to change, then control+click on it, select 'reveal in finder'. From now on make a backup of the original and then change it as you see fit. Revert to backup when you need to
Not all templates are customisable, but the Portfolio one appears to be.

  • Do DVD Studio Pro 2 templates work in 4?

    Hi,
I own a version of DVD Studio Pro 2, but was wondering if I bought 4, would these old templates still show up and work in it?

To get 4 you would need the whole Studio and usually it is a good idea to do a clean install of everything. You can move the DVD SP templates off and see if they work. I do not remember which ones carried forward at this time, but DVD SP 4 has many templates and I think they are pretty much the same.
I see you are using an Intel Mac, so heads up DVD SP 2 is not Universal Binary so if you run into issues that could be the problem. Same for the OS you are running.
Is there a reason you want to upgrade to 4? The upgrades and collection of software in the new Studio are a good jump if you are running older versions. (Motion Final Cut etc.)

  • Can you create markers that pause video on a DVD using DVD studio Pro?

I basically want to put video into DVD Studio Pro and add chapter markers that will pause the video at specific times. Is there an easy way to do this in DVD Studio - I tried some things but it never seems to be consistant. Sometimes it will pause the DVD at the correct point and other times it will not. Whatever help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I am not used to using DVD Studio, but have used the other pro apps for a long time. Thanks.

I tried that and found that it only worked some of the time - does anyone know if that is a common issue or if there is a special way to do this to make it work? Thanks for all the help.
