Using DVI audio output

So, I have my MacMini hooked up to a Sony TV with a DVI cord. Now, I want to be able to toggle between outputting through the stereo audio output on the mini and through the TV via the DVI cord. I'm pretty certain the DVI also carries the audio, so there must be a way to do this, right?

Hi IndianPHead: Unfortunately the DVI output is strictly Video, no audio.

  • Can I record in GarageBand from my Yamaha Arranger Workstation using its audio outputs?

I am a newcomer to Mac having used PCs for 27 years. In Windows I used Soundforge to record using the audio outputs or occasionally ACID using the MIDI outputs on the Yamaha. I prefer to use the audio outputs eliminating the need for soft instruments. My Yamaha has a multitude of voices which makes using soft instruments unneccesary. If recording using the audio from my instrument is not possible I will simpy continue to use Soundforge in Windows as I have been doing for years.

Never mind. I took a closer look at GarageBand and realized that it will not suit my usage.

  • Projection Goes Black With Use of Audio Output Jack

Any video projection I do when using the extended desktop as a second display begins to flicker or go completely black whenever I put a line into the headphone jack. If I unplug the line, the projection comes "back on" and is perfect. This seems to be the strangest problem since I thought using the extended desktop (mirroring off) shouldn't be related to audio output, or maybe I'm missing something. I thought it was the presentation program I was using, but I tried another, and it still happens. Any ideas?

I think you are correct. It sounds like it is a hardware problem which should't occur. Try contacting apple.

  • Problem with multiple applications using one audio output

Hey there, I'm having issues setting up my 5.1 headset seen here (http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/x-tatic-digital) to work with multiple applications.
Right now I have audio streaming from a flash video, when I try run "$ speaker-test -c 6" I get the following error:
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
If I try open another application which uses this device, the first application has its sound cut off.
    2 more things to note:
    - My preference for setup would be audio output through S/PDIF and input through USB, with the USB output disabled (To not waste system resources).
    - I unmuted all channels in ALSA, however when I ran the test only 2 channels seemed to be working (Front L&R), it may have been defaulting to the USB connection, in which case, that explains only 2 channels being in use, is there a method of setting the S/PDIF as default system wide?
Thanks in advance for any help given!

Woops, I guess my paste messed up, new .asoundrc: http://pastie.org/3706033
I can run both at the same time, however I cannot hear any audio. Do I somehow have to change the default device, if so how can I do that?
    Edit:
    Restarted system now I get:
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
    Using max buffer size 8192
    Periods = 4
    was set period_size = 1024
    was set buffer_size = 8192
    0 - Front Left
    Segmentation fault
    (That's with both commands)
    EDIT 2:
Interesting, apparently 2 audio streams are working, however the console thing still doesn't work..?
    EDIT 3:
Didn't last long, now flash crashes and html 5 doesn't work -.-
    EDIT 4:
Flash only works when other audio is active, however it has constant popping sound. I went through the system logs to get the errors of when flash crashes, it's audio crashing it, here's the error:

  • Using multiple audio output devices.

Hey, does anybody know a program for assigning different audio outputs to different applications. For example, having Safari and the OS outputing to the computer speakers, while iTunes and Muse output to bluetooth speakers/headphones (non airport). Can it be done?

Sound Bunny is a nice replacement for Detour, which got lost in the move from PPC years ago. Hoever, there is a small bug with sites with audio (auto-play audio, that is) in Safari 7 (at least). They return the error below and won't load. This happen on other sites, but if it happens on the Google site as well, then something is seriously wrong. The company tech support insists: "SoundBunny will not stop any website from loading. SoundBunny is a audio controlling software and does not control which websites to load." ~ Abu; Prosoft Engineering Customer Support
Even after sending them two screenshots like this, I have gotten no response and no answer to how I might REMOVE the plugin from Safari. So while I like the program, I would be able to RECOMMEND IT if the comapny was at least responsive and recognizes that there is, in fact, an issue to be resolved.

  • W500 audio noise while using audio output

    Hello,
Few months ago I've bought Lenovo W500. After some time realized that when I'm using an audio output in sometimes I can hear annoying noise. I've checked it with different headphones (also professional ones) and other audi equipment. Always the same.
In the beginning I've thought there are some problems with my Alsa configuration (I'm using mainly Linux) but havent time to check.
Now I've spent more time for that. I've couldn't find solution, decided to check on Windows also - there is the same problem (with exactly the same audio files/youtube videos etc.)
Checked with different quality audio files - mp3, flac, audio cd etc. Always the same.
I can hear it very good in this moovie:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaUL_7H7r40
first time noise appears at 00:02 - 00:03 and then I can hear it in almost whole time.
If I turn off all audio players etc. I can still hear annoing, quiet noise from headphones (on both OSes - Linux/Windows).
    Has anyone simmilar problem?
Any solution? My W500 is ofcourse under warranty but I need it at the moment very hard, so I hope there is some solution different than sending it to service :/
    Thanks a lot,
    Regards.

If you discard any software related problem, your problem is over hardware.
The only solution is sending to service and the will repair it for free. Maybe the will change the entire motherboard.
    Best regards.

  • 1/4" with optical audio output

Does anyone actually use the digital audio output? Like in a home theater for Dolby Digital? Does the MBP output DTS?

The digital audio output works great. As an audiophile, it's one of the best things about my MacBook Pro. I use mine to not only connect directly via optical cable (toslink) to an external DAC, I can use my MBP as a digital front end for my audio system. I also use my Airport Express to stream music digitally to my pre-amp. The great thing is there is no signal loss between my MBP (source) and the preamp or DAC. This is completely different from using the audio output jack in an analog manner. The difference is astounding. You can buy an optical cable, also called toslink, fibre optic cable, fibre cable, online or at most big box electronics stores. Not all cables come with the mini adapter though, so make sure to find one that does. Monster makes one for about $40, but you can find them online for as little as $6 (before shipping.) The absolute best deal I found was from PowerMax.com. Delivered, this cable was less than $20! The cabling is small in diameter, but it is high quality and the mini adapter snaps into solidly into place. It is a great product at a great price and will make an extraordinary difference compared to analog. Find it here: http://www.powermax.com/parts/show/serv-922-6540 It's made by MonsterCable (MonsterCable is labeled on the external shielding.) It does come with a mini adapter and will work with all the Apple optical digital inputs and outputs. The digital audio output will export Stereo, Dolby Digital (Stereo, 5.1 and 7.1) and DTS. It's a pure digital signal. I can connect my MBP to my 50" 1080p HDTV and use the optical digital out to output the audio in Dolby Digital 7.1 into my audio system. Awesome! Apple was genius to design the audio jacks (input and output) to accept both an analog and digital cable in the same jack. For less than $20, try it, you'll love it. Also, regarding Apple's Airport Express; I rarely used my Airport Express in an analog manner. I couldn't stand the loss in sound quality. I mean, what's the point of having your music in a lossy format stored on your computer if you can't get that same high quality out of it. Using the Airport Express in an analog manner, the degradation in sound quality isn't even worth it (for me.) As an audiophile, quality (both the recording process and the playback process) are everything. By connecting the Airport Express with an optical cable to my pre-amp or DAC, I use it almost daily to stream music and now can truly used my MBP as a digital front end and music server. It's one of the greatest upgrades ever in my audio system and it was only $20!

  • Buzz In Audio When Using DVI Output

I've had this problem for a while now, but everytime I plug in a monitor to the DVI port I get a horrible buzz out of my audio interface. I've tried everything: using different DVI cables and audio cables, using different audio interfaces, disconnecting everything except the necessary things, etc. and no matter what, the buzz comes when I plug something into the DVI port. I'm assuming that this has to do with the video card, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had problems like this.

Are the TV and the Mac plugged into different wall outlets in the room? It could be they are on widely different circuits, considering the wiring behind the wall, and that stray currents are flowing through the signal cables and upsetting the signals carried on those cables.
If the above is true, try plugging the TV into the same outlet as the Mac and see if things improve.

  • How do I use one audio jack as input and one as output?

On my MacBook Pro, if I get a USB-headphone connector (to add another audio port), will I be able to set one audio port as input and the other as output? To use the port coming out of the USB jack as a headphone jack, and plug a mic/output device into the computer's port?
I'm thinking about buying a "Sabrent USB External Stereo Sound Adapter". I have a preamp that is NOT an interface, and I want to be able to monitor what I'm doing so I can multitrack. But my MacBook only having one audio 1/8 inch jack makes it so I have to choose either input OR output...I'm hoping if I add an extra port via USB I'll be able to have one of each.
    Thank you!

Yes, either way round. In System Preferences>Sound you can set the input and output ports separately.
Roger, the System setting have -Nothing- to do with the question being asked. Do you use Logic Pro audio software? If you did you would know Logic has it's own audio settings that run independently from the System audio. There's also the fact that Maverick has problems with "some" older USB 2.0 audio hardware. Basically, this is not a slam-dunk, that's why I suggested asking someone if they've used this combination before. Although... the USB audio device is cheap ($10) it might be worth it to try. Still.............**
** I question the wisdom of using cheap audio hardware on a computer that cost $1000+, software that costs $200 and then using the internal audio chip ($2) and an external monitoring device that costs $10. Defeats the whole purpose of using professional audio software.

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • How do I use the USB port on my MBP for audio output

I am a fairly new commercial sound provider running live sound and the occassional itunes type playback at events.  I currently use a Y cable from the headphone output of my MBP osX  into the RCA inputs on my audio mixer.  On an older HP laptop I was able to use a USB output into the USB input of the mixer and the sound was a lot better in quality. I wish to do the same using the new MBP but when I plugged into the right side USB port I received no audio output.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks howardfrom nh.

Have you gone into the Sound/Output system preferences to see if your mixer shows up there as a valid output device and if it does selected it there? If it doesn't appear, have you confirmed with the manufacturer of your mixer that it is compatible with Macs and if so asked if there are any drivers you need to install?
    Regards.

  • How can you choose which audio output device to use?

I currently have my system set up to have two different active audio output playback devices, Speakers and Headphones. By default, applications play on the default audio output device, which is set to Speakers on my computer. However, I am wanting to play iTunes on my Headphones output while all other applications are running on the default Speakers output. In Windows Media Player, there is a dropdown to select which output device the application streams to. Is there a way to make iTunes do this, either in the Preferences menu, by using a plugin, or installing a third-party application that overrides which output applications use?

Under Utility you will find the Configurazione MIDI Audio.app  The name is in italian on my Mac but you should find it in your system language. The icon is a Piano Keyboard.

I want to use a FM radio app to Airplay music through my Apple TV (by using the synchronizing function). Works, but after some minutes, the Airplay audio output setting switches back to iPad. Why? Solution?
Why don't use iTunes? Because this just needs to many handling in order to get it where i want it (in general, this whole idea of doing everything online just works likes... ). An app is easier (that's why it is invented).

    Hey AKfishgirl,
Thanks for the question. The common variable here is your Wi-Fi router. Let’s check to see if the commonly used ports are being blocked by a firewall on your router:

  • Using Mountain Lion iOS and audio output will not change from internal speakers to AppleTV so that sound can come from TV speakers, why??

I am using Mountain Lion iOS and trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my plasma TV using AppleTV and AirPlay mirroring.     The video does just fine.     However, there is no audio coming from the TV.     After activating AirPlay I try to select Apple TV as the audio output in System Preferences and it highlights it but then immediately goes back to Internal Speakers and only has sound coming from the MacBook Pro..
    What's going wrong ?????
    AJ

Are you sure that WIFI network doesn't have an AppleTV on it?  Just because you don't own it doesn't mean there isn't one on that network.  The laptop or better said the OS cannot differentiate between an AppleTV that you own or not.  If it sees one on the network, it will show you one as being available.  The automatic reconnection is happening probably because the last time you streamed to an AppleTV, you didn't drop that connection before sleeping the computer or shutting down iTunes.
