Using e-SATA w/ Intel iMac?

I've been advised that e-SATA drives would be my best option for running 2 external drives.
This is apparently what's best for the East West Quantum Leap Sample engine.
Very cpu intensive.
Is e-SATA even an option for me?
Do I need some connector or "card"?
Thanks,
Ken
My Computer specs:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
SMC Version: 1.29f1

There is no ExpressCard port on an iMac, only FireWire. You could not use an eSATA system on the computer. You could put two SATA drives into a FireWire enclosure, however. Use FW800 if your iMac has a FW800 port for best speed.

  • Using windows XP with intel Imac

I recently used bootcamp to create a windows partition on my imac. Everything works fine except the windows side doesen't recognize the imac's built in speakers. I'm not much of a computer wiz, so I need help! Anyone?

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows XP.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & XP, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

  • Partition Hard drive with os9 drivers using Leopard Disks on Intel iMac

After the death of my iMac 17" a few weeks ago, I purchased a new iMac from Apple.
I am having trouble, though because it will not run any of my design programs. Photoshop 7, etc. I have done extensive research & found that the problem is that these programs are not compatible with Leopard.
I cannot afford to re-purchase all these programs. Besides, I need to be able to run some older programs in Classic. There are many reasons for this which I will not bore you with.
I found the following discussion here on Apple about partitioning the HD so that I can run Tiger with Classic support.
    http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=173301
It was stated that you could create partitions to run Classic, Tiger and Leopard.
I would like to create a Volume for Leopard and another for Tiger with Classic support.
I have tried to do use Disk Utility as discussed here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
However, I can only get my mac to boot from the Leopard install disks. It does not give have the option to install OS9 drivers as shown in the above tutorial. My iMac will not boot from the Tiger install disks. (They are not model specific. They were purchased separately from Apple.)
I understand that Leopard OS does not offer Classic support. However, I need it in the partition that I plan to run Tiger.
    How should I proceed?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Libraries have computers everywhere. I would recommend getting acquainted with your nearest one. If they don't have computers, hours, times, write your local politicians demanding better computers, and hours if there aren't enough. You could have subscribed to Apple Discussions at the library, and learned as much as you needed. The info is out there. http://www.everymac.com/ is another place, so is http://www.apple-history.com/ and many sites you'll find via http://www.macsurfer.com/
Tiger isn't so much outdated, as no longer sold by Apple. Plenty of people still use Tiger, and even Panther, and believe it or not, even Mac OS 9. See this board:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177
    and

So it is not like there aren't people using it. It just becomes harder to find some things, but never would I say impossible.

  • Using Microsoft Office on Intel iMac

Should I remove the Test drive files from the hard drive? The programs seem to run very slowly on this new machine?

Office is not an universal binary so it must run via Rosetta. That will make it a slower than running natively on a PPC Mac.
Whether you remove it or not, however, is up to you. Eventually the trial expires anyway. If you do remove it be sure to use the uninstaller that is supplied with it.

  • Turbo Tax For windows and Mac - OK to use on Core Intel iMac??

Won't be long before taxes are due! ..My wife bought Turbo Tax at Costco and I'm hoping that it's ok to use on our new Intel iMac. Have any of you loaded this on your iMacs? Any problems??
    Thx,
    Syd123

I also bought TurboTax at Costco, and used it without any problems on my iMac Core Duo. I was a little bit concerned because others on Intuit's support forum have reported that they're unable to get the version purchased at Costco to update, but everything went smoothy.
Now just waiting for my refund!

  • X11 on intel imac, garbled text

When using x11 on my intel imac with the color depth set at 256, all text on any x11 window is garbled.
Anybody else notice this? Is there a fix?
    -chris

    Chris
I cannot help you, but I know exactly what you are going through.
I have Mac Mini G5's running X11 with 256 colors, no problem.
The new Intel Mac Mini WILL NOT RUN X11 AT 256 COLORS.
Not only are the fonts garbled in xterm, and other xapps such as xeyes, and xlogo are "jagged", but also the Xserver does not accept remote clients.
If you run X11 with thousands or millions of colors, X11 works, and can run xwindows from remote boxes.
I posted a on this topic, and received a few hints, but no solutions. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2161056#2161056
I tried OroboroOSX, but it suffers from the same issues on an Intel Mac. It works fine on G5's.
I submitted a bug report, but I get the feeling that Apple has higher priorities than X11 support.
I phoned Apple about this, and they told me that they do not support X11.
Maybe if enough people phoned Apple Support, and submit bug reports, Apple will correct this issue.

  • ID2 on Intel iMac 10.5.4

Will ID2 (not CS) run on a 2.6 Gb Intel iMac with OS 10.5.4. I remember seeing early on that it would have problems on Intel iMac, but have also heard it runs ok in that environment. Anyone using it with a Intel iMac without problems.

I can safely say that ID 2.0 (CS = ID 3.x) will run on an Intel Mac running OS 10.4.11. I haven't tested it for stability, but it runs.
I am not sure about OS 10.5.x
Considering that ID2 was build during the transition of OS 9 and OS 10.0, your experience may be less than ideal. Time to upgrade.
Unfortunately, the time to upgrade for a relatively low cost has come and gone.

  • IMovie 06 with Intel iMac not recognizing camera

I am using iMovie 06 and love it, however since I have been using it on my Intel iMac, iMovie will not recognize my Canon ZR 70. I thought that it was possibly not compatible, however at work we have an Intel iMac and are running the exact same version on iMovie and the camera is recognized. It is possible that when I installed iMovie 06 that I forgot to select recognize camera; is there a preference or something that I can toss to allow my iMovie to recognize the camera?

    Eric,
I plugged the HD back in and went to Disk Utility....none of the buttons (Verify Disk, Repair Disk etc) are selectable, and the "Mount" button is also not clickable.
When this same hard drive is connected to the iBook, the name we've given it appears on the desktop and we can successfully use the device. On this iMac, the name doesn't appear, for example it shows
    149.1 GB etc etc etc
    Macintosh HD
    409.4 GB Iomega
    (name not shown)
Also, and what may be the problem, is that when I select the external HD and click "Info", it says S.M.A.R.T. Status is Not Supported. How can I get this to work?
    Thanks

  • How do I use my Intel iMac to see the screen on my old G5

The screen on my old G5 is fading fast and I would like to connect it to my newer Intel iMac and use it's screen to be able to see what i'm doing. Is there a way to do that?

Fortunately I was just able to make out the Screen Sharing check box on my older Mac. As soon as I checked it and opened the file on the newer Mac there was the screen. Perfect. Thanks so much.

  • I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " the picture you are trying to print is in the iphoto library"  what can i do to be able to print a photo from iphoto

I am using iphoto 6.06 for my intel imac.  I have been trying to print pictures from iphoto and i keep getting a message that states " unreadable file: the following file could not be imported.  the file is in the iphoto library folder"  also when i try to print a picture from iphoto i get a message that says "no page was selected"
not sure what happened but i can pnly print when i drop the photo onto my desktop as an 8.5 x 11 size picture and i am trying to print 4x6's

Since the new library gives you the same message log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can run iPhoto without getting that message.  If you get that message there also a reinstall of iPhoto seems indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all available updates to it.

  • Using Time Machine to backup a iMac G5 and restore to an intel iMac

Is it possible to use Time Machine to backup my iMac G5 and restore my backup to a new intel iMac?
The reason being is that I my mother-in-law's company bought her a new intel Mac and she wants to trade with me since she only uses her Mac for e-mail, photos and accounting software.
I was thinking of making sure her data is preserved by using the migration assistant to transfer her data to my iMac G5 and then using my time machine backup to restore to her intel iMac. I have concerns about this method after reading about the intel/powerpc issues with time machine. I also have concerns that perhaps the version of MacOS 10.5 installed to my iMac G5 will not be optimized for intel.

Well, not entirely. You cannot install or restore a PPC version of OS X to an Intel Mac because the PPC system will not work on an Intel Mac. You can copy your personal files, most preference files, and third-party applications (although it would be preferable to update all PPC-only apps to universal binaries which perform better on Intel machines.
Another possible concern is if your mother's company is transferring the ownership to her or simply purchasing the unit for her to use. In the latter case the computer belongs to the company, not your mother. She cannot then give it to you because it isn't hers. This problem should be resolved beforehand because the company may one day want the computer back.

It would depend on how old your IMac is, how mush memory you have, it it can be upgraded by OWC, etc. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro and would NOT put Mavericks on it or espeacially FCP 10.1.1 on it because the most memory it can have is 4 GB. You need at least 8 GB to work with Final Cut Pro 10.1.1. IMHO.
I would try to find a copy of Final Cut Express perhaps.

  • External hard disk for use with quicksilver 2002 and intel imac 24"

i am wanting to purchase an external hard disk to be used with both a g4 and an intel imac 24".
i am considering a seagate barracuda 500gb or 750gb and purchasing an external case separately.

Do I need a case with the "oxford chipset" to have it work.
Are all seagates compatible these days.
I was looking at a ultra ata100 hard disk. Will this disk connect automatically to the enclosure or will additional cables be required
Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.
    http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2307.htm
Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........

  • Can I use any SATA hard drive with an iMac?

Hi, I'm a PC user from birth, and want to purchase an iMac, but the 500gb-1tb isn't enough storage for what I currently have on my PC (I have 4x 250gb hard drives, plus I'd need more room for the Mac OS). My question is, can I use any HD in the iMac, or does it have to be a "mac" hard drive? Also, can I hook up any external hd's? If this is the case, I'll buy 5-10 external enclosures for my hd's and build a custom box for them all. (Or put it in a slower PC I have, and run as a server, as I have to sell my good PC to afford a iMac)

My iMac reports its internal HD as 'WD3200AAJS' (WesternDigital Caviar SE line),
so it appears to be a standard form-factor HD with a standard SATA interface.
