Using Elements Organizer on a Home Network

Both my husband and I have been using Elements for a couple of years on two separate home computers. However, we recently got a home network and would like to be able to share our files, with both of us being able to view and edit the photos from Organizer. I can't figure out the best way to do this. Ideally, we want to gradually move our photos to the network drive as they are organized so that both of us can edit/view them from there to avoid all the duplicates we have now. We are using Elements 7 and Windows 7. So far, my husband only edits in Elements. He doesn't use Organizer or tags so we don't have to worry about importing his tags, but he may want to in the future. I use both now.
It's my understanding that we need to move the photos to the server using Elements rather than Windows Explorer. So I've done that, but my photos get "lost" when my husband edits and moves them, even though he is doing so from Elements and moving them to a shared folder. After reading here, it looked like maybe the problem was that we each have our own catalogs. I could create a new catalog on the server and move things into it, but that doesn't seem practical since I would lose all my tags. Or I could move my current catalog to the server. But looks like it may be best to keep Organizer/the original catalog on my computer in a shared location and import his photos into it due to speed concerns. However, my husband really wants to keep the photos on the network drive for backup reasons, so I'm not sure how that will work. Not only that, but I can't figure out how he can tell his PSE to pull up my existing catalog.
Any suggestions on the best way to handle this? Thank you.

You can create a backup of your catalog and then restore it to the network. That will move the files and the catalog / tags. However I don't know if/how you can merge your catalogs... so one of you is going to miss out. To minimise the impact of this, write the tags to the files (Apparently the 3rd-party tool PSEDB is better at this than PSE itself), move them to the network and then import them... the tags should be picked up by PSE.
Also be sure to read around the issues surrounding having photos / catalog on the network... it is possible (I do it) but it has some issues. The main one is to make sure both your computers see the network as the same name/drive letter.

Using Elements Organizer with Photoshop CS2

I have grown comfortable with Photoshop Elements integrated organizer and have upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and instead of using the CS2 file manager would like to continue to use the Elements organizer. The problem Im having is when I edit a photo in CS2 and save it, I have to go find the edited file in Elements organizer and add it manually to the organizer, where if I edit in Photoshop elements, the file is automatically added in the organizer for me. Is there something I can do to make this more automatic when I edit in CS2?

I have all the current updates for both products, but other than that, I've
done nothing special.
For regular file types (jpg, psd, etc.) the handshake goes without a hitch.
Raw files act a little quirky. Raw files do get passed from Organizer to
CS2 and they open in camera raw. But, I've found that if you don't press
the "open" button in camera raw, CS2 will give you an error message that
says it couldn't receive the document from "Photoshop Album". Click ok on
that message and you get another that says it could not complete the update
from the Photoshop Album command because of a program error.
If, I press "open" in the camera raw dialog to edit in CS2, all is fine. If
I make changes and save, Organizer pops up a message saying I've returned to
Organizer and gives me an option to add to a version set or keep it
separate. It adds to the version set fine. But, since I only selected save
in CS2, it remains open there. If I make further edits to the open file and
save, I have to manually update the organizer thumbnail. On the other hand,
if I just click close and respond yes to the "save changes" message , I get
two popups -- one labled "edited file from Photoshop" and "new edited file".
If I click "ok" on both, I get two entries in the version set. (I've done
that with a regular file and I only get one popup.)
So, there you have it. Ordinary files work as expected. But, raw is quirky.
Raw files work fine if you continue to open in CS2 from camera raw and only
save once.

How can I use LR as an Editor while using Elements Organizer as the Database?

I started this question in the LR newbie section of the forum but maybe a few more eyes should see the question.
Simply put, I want to stay with Elements Organizer as the database of my holdings. (Yes, I've tried the LR analog and it does not do as well for me.)
I'd like to mouse a file ovfer to LR, do edits in LR, and then get the finished product back to Elements. I suspect that is an EXPORT issue on LR's part but am not sure.
Are there others who have a similar requirement?
How should I proceed?

I'm admittedly out on a limb here, since I have zero experience with Photoshop Elements. On the plus side, I have lots of experience with Lightroom, and plugins which may help.
As Jim said, photos have to be added to Lightroom catalog to be edited, and the 2 possible ways which spring to mind are:
* Manual Import
* Automatic Import
Manual may not be so bad, since you can drag a file (maybe direct from PE, but certainly from OS) and drop it in the library grid, and Lr's import dialog box will open with only that photo selected and 'Add' as the way to import it (as opposed to 'Copy', 'Move', or 'Convert to DNG'). So, all you'd have to do is click the 'OK' (actually it's 'Import') button.
The problem with Lr's automatic import is that it only supports one watched folder, so you'd have to copy files to it, and then info needed to export it to the correct place for return to PE has been lost, so I recommend using Jeffrey Friedl's Folder Watch plugin, or my very own Ottomanic Importer if you choose to go that route. That way, when you export or publish them they'll be where you want them to be (same folder as original, if I understood you correctly).
For return to PE, I'd recommend TreeSyncPublisher. I mean, if you are only ever editing once, and always doing one at a time, then a simple export will suffice, but if you want to edit (and/or re-edit) in batch, a publish service will save you some confusion, since you don't have to remember which photos you edited - just click 'Publish'.
I assume you have some way for PE to recognize new files created by publishing in Lr, and updates to existing files...
You may have to experiment to come up with something that suits well enough - keep us posted..

Making use of local DNS for home network

I have an Apple Base Station and I wish to set up better local services on my home network, starting with local DNS. I see that the ABS will attempt to apply the <name>.local handle for devices but this seems inconsistent. What defines whether a host/file-server/printer/etc... will get a name and how is is defined? For windows machines, do I need Bonjour installed for this to work or will it take info from WINS or NETBIOS? For machines with DHCP addresses is there a way to set up some sort of dynamic DNS or bind a name to the devices MAC address?

The actual Home highway box (with the telephone sockets and blue cat 5 sockets on the front) I would suggest you just throw in the bin.
You would also have had a special front plate installed that plugs into the BT owned NTE5.
Not sure what you had in mind, do you want to have a new line provided or shift your existing line over to the old socket?

Cant use iphone4 wifi connect with home network

Updated iphone4 version 4.3.2 the phone still cant connect with home network via wifi! When before updated was everything normal!

I switched the rounter on and off and the securty ps from the rounter is correct! But it keeps sayin cannot connect with xxx network, and i have to keep "dismiss" it!

My friend has an iphone 5 and has just bought Apple TV so she can watch movies on the tv off her phone but she has no home phone line so no internet at home except for through her iphone how can she connect her phone to the Apple TV she did think she might be able to use her personal hot spot but can not seem to get the Apple TV to see it
Any advice gratefully accepted

I'm a little baffled, though... the Apple TV teardowns show that the boxes have 8 GB of flash, which is an awful lot. Isn't there any way I can load a movie to the box locally, using USB and iTunes or another method?

Can't use elements organizer while signed in

Any one else experiencing problems like put photos in an album, only to find the software can't find the pics you just put in an album, or find photos deleted from your hard drive even if you have not deleted photos, the third thing is that I find edited copies of photoes that have never been edited. These are fine when I use the software but never log in, when logged in all kinds of wierd stuff happens.

How to use iChat on the same home network?

If two people have iChat on their laptops and happen to be in the same house on the same router, do you need to set up some sort of account to use iChat to see and talk to each other or can they do it with whatever is already on their macs?
If they do need some sort of third party account, what's the easiest method to use?

You do not "Need" any other Screen Name or other utility or app.
The Start Up Screens if you have not done that bit yet will prompt you for an AIM or Apple ID (Screen Name) in the Second Screen. It will also prefill your Name from the Address Book Info held at the My Card.
You can click through this Screen. The Next will ask you about setting up Jabber/Googletalk but you can click through that as well.
There is a Screen that allows you to Enable Bonjour as well. Tick the Box as this is what you will be using.
There follows a Video preview and the option to take a Pic as your Buddy pic.
Then a Screen with the Done Button.
This should then open iChat proper with just one Buddy List titled Bonjour.
It will use your name as in the Address Book as your Buddy name (this is what the other computers will see.
Alternatively you can click through all the start Up Screens then go the the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and Enable the Bonjour listing in the Account Info tab > "Enable Bonjour" tick box
Double Clicking a Buddy's Line in the Buddy list will start a Text Chat
If they are showing a Camera icon, double clicking the icon will start a Video chat.
There are variations using the icons at the bottom of the Buddy List or the Buddies menu (even Right Clicking on a Buddy)

Is Elements Organizer 9 robust (powerful) enough to organize 10,000 photos without crashing?

I'm scanning literally thousands of photos from my 40 years as a photographer. I'm currently using Elements Organizer 9 to keep them organized using keytags and dates. I want to know if I can trust this basket to hold ALL my "eggs". I'm afraid I may get a "corrupt catalog" error message and all my work will be null and void. I would love to switch to using Adobe Bridge but it's out of my price range right now as I'm home on disabnility with a torn shoulder.
Does anyone know of Elements Organizer can handle 10,000 plus photos without crashing?

I have been using PSE6, PSE10, PSE11 and PSE12 with catalogs containing 50 000 items. There has been posts about users with more than 100 000 items. The organizer offers a good backup scheme.

A 'corrupt' catalog is something very rare, but you'll see many posts about catalogs containing 'corrupt' media files (mainly videos). The risk is minimal if you regularly use the built-in tools to repair and optimize the catalog and do regular backups.
One of the main concerns about losing one's organization is about keywords, captions, tags and notes. The organizer lets you save those data to the files themselves, so that they are accessible to any other editing software.
A PSE9 catalog can be read and converted to more recent Elements versions, as well as by Lightroom. I would advise upgrading to PSE12 when you can, but PSE9 is still a valid option.

Home Network and ical

If I don't use .mac but have a home network of computers - can I pull up the same ical and edit/update it from any of the computers in the home network? Do I need to make one of the home computers a "server"? If so, how do I do this?

if you have your own domain name, then you can publish it directly to that and subscribe to it from computers in your home network, however it will only be read-only.

Elements Organizer 12 Error Saving Project in Adobe Premier Elements 12

When I try to save a slide show project using Elements Organizer 12 in Adboe Premier Elements i get an "Error Saving Project" message and it will not let me save my project. Can you help?

Just a point of clarification. Did you ever disable the psa.prf file by renaming it to psa.prfOLD? It sounded like you could not. If that was the case, was there any message associated with the program not wanting to follow you directive? Was it a saving matter or did you get a pop up about permissions? If a permissions one, did it give you an option for Continue? If so, did you click on Continue?
1. Let us try to get the psa.prf deleted or disabled if possible.
2. Then create a new catalog. See Elements Organizer 12, File Menu/Manage Catalogs/Catalog Manager,
Let us see if we can rule in or out the two above.
Besides the problem with the Save Project in the Slideshow Editor, are you seeing that problem anywhere else? (I know that you said you do not have a problem with the Output option Save As A File Movie WMV.

Elements Organizer hangs on importing iPhoto library

Hi all!
I am trying to import my complete iPhoto library into the Elements Organizer. I chose file→import from iPhoto and it does start some copying process. Then it starts another copying process but stalls after about 10% is done. What also surprises me is that the command import from iPhoto doesn't show any dialogue with options to choose, like "convert albums into somethings". It just start a process. Is it possible that Elements Organizer doesn't support blank spaces as characters in file names? I think it stops when showing some image file I have that has a space character in the file name like "Cologne II.jpg"
The Elements Organizer hangs so badly I have to force-quit out of it.
I am using Elements Organizer 12.1 x64 on Mac OS 10.9.4 and iPhoto 9.5.1 (sharing a library with Aperture 3.5.1).

And this is what it looks like. I have taken screen shots:
First it does this until finished (100%):
(It's German and it says, "3238 of 5748 files are being copied").
Then comes a new window showing this:
(This one says, "38 of 5748 element(s) imported")
and then this just stops at 10% looking like this until I force-quit the Organizer:

Automatic people recognition in Elements Organizer

Hi everyone,
Because I have limited online disk space, I've been using Elements Organizer for quite some time to catalogue all my offline images. What I do is to burn all my images to DVD's and then import these images into Organizer as offline media with the “Generate previews” option. This way I can quickly find out on which DVD a particular image is kept. This way I save on disk space on my computer.
Now I would like to get some advice and comments from you guys on using Organizer this way. I get the impression that the automatic people recognition does not work with offline media. Is this a correct assumption? How do you best optimize use of disk space when you have over 10000 images. My current version of Photoshop Elements is version 12.

Bridge doesn't currently have a way to recognize people, like Photoshop Elements Organizer, but the keywords should certainly be recognized! When you're in Bridge, check out the Keywords Panel (Window > Keywords Panel). It should contain the tags that you set in Organizer.

Problem importing pictures from camera with Elements Organizer

I am using Elements Organizer from Photoshop Elements 9 (Mac OS 10.6.8). Recently, the files imported from my camera are being stored on my hard drive with the permissions set so that only the owner of the files can read them. Previously, anyone could read them. I must have accidentally changed something in Elements Organizer.
How do I set things back to how they were so that everyone can read the files imported from the camera? Is there a way to reset the default settings for Elements Organizer?
I can get around this by setting the permissions for the folder of pictures from the Terminal window, but this requires that I remember to do so after each import.

Elements Organizer (version 9) - no thumbnails

Hi,
I recently bought Photoshop Elements 9 and now try to organize my photos using Elements Organizer. My photos include jpegs as well as raw files (Canon S60, Nikon d5000). However, the Organizer behaves more than strange: Most times, thumbnails are shown only for a small part of the photos (even after hours of thumbnail creation) - for jpegs more often than for raw files. If the thumbnail of a photo was shown during the last session this does not mean that it will also be shown after a restart of the Organizer software as well. Sometimes thumbnails are shown and Elements Organizer then starts to show the status message that thumbnails are now being created - as a result existing thumbnails then disappear. Creating a missing thumbnail of a photo via context menu (right mouse buttom) allmost never work (I get the respective status message but never the resulting thumbnail).
The OS is Windows XP (all servicepacks, updates), I also installed all updates for Photoshop Elements via its update procedure. Photos are stored on a NAS (which should not be a problem), ca. 80 GB of data (Windows Explorer counts 28000 files, Elements Organizer counts 120000 elements in the status bar).
Does anybody face the same/ similar problems or has an idea of what goes wrong?

I finally found the answer by myself - maybe somebody is interested. Search for the file "thumb.5.cache" and rename or delete it. After starting the Organizer all thumbnails were recreated (independent of the format).
