Using emac´s abroad

I purchased my emac in the UK about 3 years ago and I want to use it in Peru. It is still in the UK so I have to think carefully about whether it is worth the effort of paying to ship it over here. Main reason being...will it work in Peru by adapting a plug? What would be the best way of adapting the plug...a converter or a transformer? I don´t want to use the incorrect device and end up damaging the computer (ie with it overheating) or find out that I can´t adapt the plug at all.
emac-power pc g4   Mac OS X (10.3.1)   Purchased mac in the UK

My references may be wrong, but Voltage Specifications by Country shows Peru as primary 110v 50Hz, secondary 220v 60Hz, while the UK shows as 240v 50Hz. That source also shows Peru as using type K plugs and UK as type D (with type G as a secondary option). I don't know how consistinet the Peruvain electrical standards are, through.

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Repair permissions and try a Safe Boot, hold shift at startup.
If that doesn't work and you have enough space on the HD, then you can try an Archive and Install feature...

  • No user name / password - Used eMac

    Hi All.
I just bought an used eMac (800MHz). Sale was "as is" and the price was so low ($30 Argentine pesos - $8.6 Dollars) that I couldn't ressit the temptation
The problem is I don't have the user name or password so I can not login into Mac OS X. Is there anything I can do? Maybe get a bootable 10.4 DVD or CD?
Just in case I get a boot DVD/CD, how can I do to make the system boot from the optical drive?
    Thank you!

Purchase a bootable CD or DVD, insert it, and restart the computer with the C key held down. Choose the Reset Password option from the Utilities menu. This won't work if an Open Firmware password is set on the machine; if one is, ask the person who sold it to you for that or the administrator username and password.

If the OS is not installed on another CPU, then you can install it on any single Mac with which it is compatible.
The software license is indeed on paper, and you can visit the Apple website to find online copies of their license agreements.
In case you aren't aware the Apple Discussions are provided by Apple. Any discussion of illegal uses of software or hardware would violate the Terms of Use for the Discussions. Furthermore, were we to advise you to ignore Apple's license agreements then we would be guilty of abetting illegal acts. • I have A used eMac that is running 10.5.8

I have A used eMac Running 10.5.8, that was purchased on ebay. In keychain acess, the directory services, keychain is locked and greyed. I seem to be able to delete some or all of it, it gives me the option, to "delete the references" (files on the hardrive) or "delete the references and the files they are related to on the harddrive". Should I delete only, the references, or, the references and files? Or is there, A way, to unlock this, to see what it contains? Thanks for any help.

Yes, that's, what, I did! Just, now, I tried, to delete, "references & files" from directory services. Nothing, happened, at, first, fiddling around with keychain first aid, and then I noticed, "directory services" is gone now. "Horray"! Also, vanished, is ".Mac", (which was, also, locked, and greyed) I, guess, this, is, more, my, PC, now, than, it was, before. They, didn't, have, computer, courses, when, I went, to, high school, (they, were, just new) but I'm A US Navy, trained Electrian, and knowledgeable, enough, to, decipher, the, function of, A, computer. I'm still learning, but, finding, the, functions, to, be, similar, to, any, electrical, device, that, being, logical, and, straightforward. Any, references, you could, suggest, on, becoming, more, computer, literate, would be helpful, and, I appreciate, your, effort, thanks! Really!

  • Using my phone abroad

Hi. I didn't realise I had to phone EE in advance of going on holiday to set up my phone for using it abroad. I am now on holiday - is there anything I can do to have it set up as I am on the 'extra' plan?
    Thanks
    Stephen

    Hi
Far as I'm aware, if your on the 4gee extra plan you can use your phone abroad without calling them to activate roaming, it should already be on your account. If you can, go to EEs website and login to your a/c. It should tell you that it is on your plan, with a picture of a plane.
If it's not call 150 to get it activated.
I have the same plan and I was told in store I can use my phone abroad.

  • Hooking mac mini up to emac with firewire, and using emac as the display

Is this possible? Would it work to hook up the mac mini via firewire to the emac and use the emac disaplay to run the computer? Thanks

    I second that!
This is a question that is asked with remarkable regularity, and while it is possible to connect the two systems and to 'run' the mini either as a remote hard drive (a very expensive way of gaining slow external storage) or remote control it, the former is an inefficient use of the mini and the latter only allows you to open a window onto the mini from the host system, where performance is somewhat limited.
Better in this sort of situation to sell the old system and use the money to buy a new display for the mini, or if the old system is needed and funds very limited, to look for a used display.

  • Use eMac as G5 monitor?

    G'day,
As I've picked up a prev model AppleTV, I've really no need to keep my PowerMac down in the loungeroom.
That means I have no screen for it however, as I was using my TV.
What options are available to me to use my eMac as a "monitor" for the PowerMac? Screen sharing? Ubunto? Ethernet?
Guess it's kinda an overkill, having 2 computers running, but money is not something I'll be seeing for a while.
    cheers
    cosmic

    Hi-
Screen sharing over ethernet network is probably the quickest and easiest.
I use Vine Server with Leopard machines, but Chicken of the VNC is also fine:

Depending on the eMac, you may or may not need a crossover cable:

  • Using eMac keyboard with iMac help needed.

I have an iMac from around 2009, at the weekend the keyboard stopped working and until I can afford a replacement a friend has given me an old eMac keyboard he had spare to use in the meantime (which could be a while).
Just this morning I've realised that it doesn't have some of the function keys that the iMac keyboard has. The one I'm missing the most is the F3 key that shows me all the windows I have open at once. Something I find invaluable as I use my mac for music production and helps sort through and find all the plugins I have open.
Is there a way to achieve what the iMac F3 does with a combination of keys on the eMac keyboard?
    Thanks
    Andy.

With older Mac keyboards, try using the Command key with the F keys to see which F keys do what function.

  • Thought ;; Advantages of using eMac

    Hi All
While this old eMac with OS X 10.3.9 cannot play any videos or access Youtube site, I fould out that it is great in reading NEWS sites with a lot of pop up adverts.
Because this eMac does not bother with any of the pop up windows ads... which used to annoy me a lot with my WINDOWS XP PC.
Because of this, it feels a lot faster in browsing these news sites with this eMac.
And keyboard is quite nice... so its not too bad. Also, I think I do not have to bother with Virus problems with this eMac too much, which is omni-present and threatening in WINDOWS XP environment.
    cheers
    D.

They're good machines if you can live with the limitations. Bump the RAM, install OSX 10.4.11, and most of Youtube should be available to you if it's the 1 GHz model.

  • Using Emacs as Java editor

    Hello
I suppose that most of you use Eclipse development platform. But I recently installed Emacs as Java editor.
I don't find one thing : How to activate the code completion ?
For example : I begin to type JF and by pressing TAB, it fills JFrame
    thanks
    bye

    Ctrl-Meta-/
(Alt instead of Meta on keyboards without Meta).
Ctrl-H a compl will list all commands to do with completion
Last time I saw any stats, emacs was still ahead of Eclipse in popularity, but it wasn't important enough to me to remember what the article was.
(normally I use ArmedBear J <http://armedbear.org>, then emacs if it's not available, and JBuilder about once a month for step-wise debugging)

  • Use of iCloud abroad

Do I need to switch of iCloud when I travel abroad or it is enough to switch of data roaming?

.. be sure to call AT&T and enable your account for international use. They have a "WorldTraveler" service that you can purchase for $5.99 a month that gives you discounted phone call service. I think there is also a similar international package for for data and/or text messaging. BTW, I think incoming text messages are covered under your text message plan but outgoing text messages are about 50 cents per txt message and $1.30 for photo or video messages.
..be sure you know the difference between enabling your phone to make international calls from the states (WorldConnect) vs. making international calls (WorldTraveler) from China. These are different plans.
    See http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/faq.jsp/ and http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/affordable-world-package s.jsp/
Also see http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/iphone-travel-tips.jsp/ These are great b/c it will tell you how to setup your phone so you don't get charged for services you really don't need while in China.
Another tip, if you receive alot of "subscribed" email messages from state-side web sites for bill notices or advertisements etc. you may want to start "unsubscribing" now so that you don't get billed for them while in China. It can be a jungle out there internationally so study up on this stuff ahead of time.
If you do have to make phone calls to the states from China, go into Address Book now and insert +1 ahead of every area code in your Address Book. This is the dialing code to call a US phone number. Then Sync your Address Book to your iPhone. I was at Tiananmen Square and emailed pictures of us to friends.. it was fun to do.
AT&T International customer service is +1916-843-4685

  • Using emac (UK) in Canada

    Hi all.
I will be moving to Canada in the next 6 months and want to take my Emac with me. Can i use it safely in Canada with an adapter or do I need to do something else to it? It says 220v-240v on the base of the unit.
Also, I have an iBook G4 1.33Ghz Combo. Same question as above.
    Thanks for your help everyone.
    Si.

    Hi all,
this is from the service manual:
"Display/Analog Voltage Setting and LHR Module Instructions
The display/analog (service module) contains a non-switching power supply which is preset at a 220V configuration. The voltage selection is manually set by way of a voltage jumper. This means if you are replacing the display/analog assembly and you will be operating the computer in a 110V environment, you
will have to install the voltage jumper on the module.
The following instructions explain how to configure the voltage and LHR jumpers on the digital/analog
    assembly.
    Note:
The LHR coil (a line conditioning module) is required in some international countries.
Refer to Table 1 for jumper settings and the following photos for jumper and LHR locations.
    Tools
This procedure requires the following tools:
    • needlenose pliers to remove/attach the voltage jumper
    • phillips #2 screwdriver if attaching the LHR module"
Gee it was so much simpler when these things had that little selector switch in the back for 110 - 220 .
If you feel competent to do this you can read the whole thing by emailing me.
You'd have to be comfortable around the Anode area and also be aware of the delicate power cable that runs from the outer case to the soft start circuit.
