Using ethernet at gigabit speed

Hi All,
I'm awaiting delivery of a Mac Pro 3.0 dual GHz machine. I would like to have this communicate with my Power Mac G5 dual 2.5 GHz machine using gigabit ethernet, and would also like to be able to connect to the Internet from either machine. I have DSL service. Right now my DSL modem feeds into my old Farallon ethernet hub, and TCP/IP addresses are automatically assigned. I also have a couple of ethernet printers, an old G3 Mac, and a non-gigabit-capable PC, all of which I want to keep hooked up (about 8 ethernet ports should do it). So here are my questions:
1. Do I need an 8-port gigabit ethernet ROUTER, or will a gigabit ethernet switch do? If I get the latter, will I have to assign TCP/IP addresses manually, or will the DSL modem do that for me?
2. Must I use CAT 6 cables to accomplish this?
3. I'd also like the older computers (the G3 and PC) to be able to access the Internet. Will routing them through the same switch or router as the G5 and Mac Pro slow everything down?
Thanks,
Peter
Power Mac G5 and Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Some DSL modems include a Dymanic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) server and some do not. If your modem includes a DHCP you need only purchase a switch. If your modem does not have a DHCP you will need to purchase a router. You may not operate with multiple DHCP's on the same network. If you purcahse a router and your modem has a DHCP you must dissable one of them.
I am not sure that category 6 cable is an absolute necessity. If wiring distances are short and the connectors are well made, 1gb/s may work over cat 5e. Of course the connection from the switch/router to the modem and the Internet will be limited by the modem connection, probably 100mb/s, but your LAN devices with 1gb/s connections will be able to talk to each other at 1gb/s.
1gb/s is downward compatible with 10mb/s and 100mb/s

  • Using Ethernet only and not USB - why?

    Hi,
I'm fairly new so please help if you can. Have ADSL cable modem and have had problems connecting to internet. Phoned my ISP helpline and they said to take out the USB lead from the modem which I have done and its all now working. Basic question but what is difference between ethernet and usb? If now only using ethernet will my speed or anything else be affected.
    Thanks
    Dee

Some Mac functions are reluctant to work well with USB.
The short answer to your question what is difference between ethernet and usb: These are two different methods for sending data from one device to another.
USB 1 is used for example, to connect the mac keyboard to the computer. It works fine, because high speeds are not needed. USB 2 claims much higher speeds, but they are seldom achieved in real life. Strictly speaking, USB is not a substitute for ethernet, since it is only used for very short connections, whereas ethernet can work over distances of many kilometres.
Ethernet comes in flavours as well; you will see terms like 10 B/T, 100 B/T etc. These describe the density of the data that can be carried. Since ethernet has been around since the very early days of computers, its use for communication is pretty much trouble free, and just about every ISP uses it and depends on it. To my knowledge, there no computer networks, where large amounts of data are moved around, that use anything but ethernet.
All of the above is an attempt to provide a simple answer! The crux is that you are better off using ethernet than USB for the connection between the Mac and the modem. I trust that will allay any concerns you have.

  • Using both Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports

Using both Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports
If I plugged both of my ethernet ports into my LAN switch, that would double the bandwidth to and from my machine. A switch does not used shared bandwidth like a hub does. I realize that it won't speed up any of the other devices that are plugged into the switch. Regardless, I would have the capacity for double the bandwidth to my machine.
All LAN cables are CAT6 and the switch is 10/100/1000.
The question is, would Mac OS X 10.4.7 utilize both ports (soft of the way it uses multiple processors)?

It's easy to try... it's call "Link Aggregation"...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304120
You get to it by Network>Show>Network Port Configurations>New then Port in the popup, then you schould see Port Aggregation. Selt the two ports you wish to combine.

  • How big of a hardrive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 dual 500.

    Hi there.
I wanted to now how big of a hard drive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 powerpc with a dual 500 processor . at the present time i have one 80 and one 20 gig drive in there now.
So my answer is how big of a drive can i use before i have problems with seting it up. Like i want to use a 500 gig drive in my computer and my old 80 gig too. i want to buy a apple tv and store my dvds on the big 500 hardrive so i have alot of room for the vidio files, for apple t.v . If i can use one as big as one terabite you now the real big one that would be fine. The more room i have the better for me. I will be able to watch the movies i downloaded from the internet and i wont have to burn them at all.
This is of corse if apple tv will handle it.

    Hi-
If you need that much storage, and you'll have to buy a controller anyhow, get a SATA controller card, and put one or two 500gb SATA drives in. The enterprise class of SATA drives are made especially for multi media storage, have excellent seek times and fast data transfer rates. A "bargain" on a package can be had at OWC:

    or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM10TBPCI/
The MaxLine Pro drives have great characteristics, and are reviewed favorably.
I have an OWC SATA card, and the card works perfectly, and is cheaper than other makers cards of equivalent specs.

  • Anyone use Ethernet with power line adapter to increase Internet speed ?

I have been using Wi-Fi for decades on all my connections and I have never used Ethernet because of the requirement to extend the wiring throughout the three levels of my house. I recently came across articles on power line adapters and thought this maybe the ideal way to increasing the speed not only on my 5K iMac on the bedroom level but also on my Mac mini used as a media centre down in the basement where I now intend to introduce Kodi et al to my Apple TV to increase my
my enjoyment of Cable TV, which I am finding is becoming less and less enjoyable from an entertaining POV.
I would appreciate hearing from others who have successfully chosen this route and who can express their views on the matter before I take the plunge.
    Thank you.

My router is the Apple Airport Extreme which is 802.11ac. and the Bell modem (Sagemcom 2864) has been in use with Bell Fibe TV for the past 3 years. Bell replaced the Bell receivers in January when my contract expired and I threatened to opt out.  They are Arris models and are really better, but they never replaced the Bell modem, which gives me a whole lot of trouble from time to time, but I intend to bring their 'technician' back to attempt to resolve that situation. Three years these days can result in improvements in electronic components that are surprising to say the least.
I'm really amazed to see the kind of speeds that 'Old Toad' reported, since my speed tests rarely exceed 17 Mbps Down and 7 Mbps UP, which explains why I am interested in seeking higher speeds. There is another local ISP that offers a choice of higher speeds, which Bell hasn't so far, so I may because of my predicament switch ISPs if there is no improvement available from Bell.
Thank you Allan Eckert, "Old Toad'  and 'woodmeister' for your responses. I obviously need to find an ISP who can offer speeds double what I am having to endure now. One feature that is in Bell's favour is that the TV picture quality is actually superb, if only the Internet speed was on a par with that.

  • Mac Mini won't connect at Gigabit speed to Gigabit switch

    Hi there
My mac mini 1.8 Core Duo (10.5.6) will not connect to my Netgear GS108 switch at Gigabit speed. In "System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet" if I try to manually set the speed to Gigabit the machine loses the network connection. I can successfully connect at 100Mbs only.
I'm using my Bebox (Speedtouch) ADSL modem/router as the DHCP server. The mac mini (and all other computers on my LAN including my tera nas) is connected directly to the Netgear switch. The switch is then in turn connected to my BeBox. My NAS box successfully connects to the switch at full Gigabit speed and I have ruled out any cabling issues.
I think I once read a post from someone who had experienced the same thing and only managed to connect at Gigabit speeds when running Vista....
Thanks for reading and I look forward to your help!
    Tony

thankyou for your suggestion, see console log below, basically I have copied from the second that I manually changed the ethernet speed from 10Mbps to 1000Mbs...it doesn't look like it tells us much (my mac is set to map to my NAS on startup using an automator script...don't know why leopard doesn't support this kinda thing better.....)

  • Can I get a faster transfer using ethernet for an external HDD?

I have an early 2006 17" imac and am going to get an external HDD for backing up large amounts of photos. FW400 is pretty fast, but I'd was thinking that the gigabit ethernet would could be faster.
Is there a way to use ethernet to connect to an external HD and get faster than FW400 speeds?
    thanks.

    Smokerz wrote:
you could try for FW 800 and get close to 50M/sec
With a fast drive, FW800 is capable of 80 MByte/sec. However, the OP's
    iMac doesn't have FW800, only FW400. That's good for 35-40 MByte/sec
    sustained read/write speeds.
Even on a 1000 Mbps LAN, a NAS setup won't do much better -- and
    most are significantly slower:

  • Gigabit Speed problems

I'm using a DP2G G5 to try to connect to a Buffalo Tech Terastation. I can connect & use the Terastation, but I don't feel I'm getting Gigabit speeds.
I'm connected via a D-Link DGS1008D Gigabit switch (unmanaged), and the switch indicates that the MAc & the Terastation are both connected as Gigabit.
Buffalo Tech suggests I bypass the switch to see if there's a bottleneck in speed there. If I try to connect the Terastation directly to my Mac using a standard Cat5 cable, the Terastation doesn't show up on the network at all.
    So 2 questions:
    1) Do I really need a Cat5e to successfully transfer at Gigabit speeds, or will a Cat5 work?
    2) Why can't I connect the Terastation directly to the Mac's ethernet port? (I've tried setting the Terastation up as DHCP, and manually, and can't get either to show up.)
    DP2G G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    1) Do I really need a Cat5e to successfully
transfer at Gigabit speeds, or will a Cat5 work?
Yes, you do. Cat5 cannot sustain the signal level
    needed to maintain gigabit speed.
OK, that's probably a good place for me to start.
    2) Why can't I connect the Terastation directly to
the Mac's ethernet port? (I've tried setting the
Terastation up as DHCP, and manually, and can't get
    either to show up.)
This is a little harder to determine. Do you get a
link light at all? That's the first thing to check
    before going much further.
Yes, the Terastation's Link light lights up when connected.
Additionally, what kind of transfer speeds are you
getting? You're not actually expecting to get 1gbps
per second off the drive, right?
Also, is the transfer speed approximately equal for
    both reads and writes?
If one way is faster than the other it might indicate
a duplex problem on the network.
It appears slow in both directions. I can barely play a Quicktime movie that's in DV format. It typically slows to the point that the movie glitches.
In doing a mirror (using Synchronize Pro) of a nearly full 250G drive, I marked down some times & amount copied. It wasn't great to begin with, but slowed to an absolute crawl.
    09h30m - 133.55GB - 18,561files
    17h25m - 121.91GB - 53005 files
    32h20m - 127.92GB - 62,613 files
    40h37m - 130.82GB - 68,068 files
At that point I stopped the copy. On another note, using the Terastation for synchronizes is a pain. It'll copy all the files, and then if you run a Synchronize again immediately, it'll want to copy most of the files over again. Not exactly sure why it's doing this, but the files look modified to "Synchronize Pro", or any other Synchronize app I've tried.

  • Ethernet intranet transfer speed issue

I followed these directions after suspecting my transfer speed was not what it used to be. I remember when transferring files via ethernet that the speed was quite astounding.
    directions:
Network>Built-in Ethernet>Ethernet Tab>Configure drop down>Manually (Advanced), then manually set the Speed to 1000baseT on both, and the Duplex to full, then Apply... sometimes a reboot is needed.
After this resulted in no speed difference, I noticed my cables were regular cat 5, not cat 5e or 6.
So I bought some name brand cat 6 cables.
I am using a gigabit router Dlink dir 655 i believe, with cat 6 cables, but it takes about 1 minute to transfer 1 gig of data between my macbook and my G5 dual 2.3.
I believe this is not optimal speed, it seems i am still stuck on 100mbps.

  • Only 10TBase Ethernet instead Gigabit Ethernet

    Hi there
I have an Airport Extreme on which i hook up directly my macbook via patch cat 6 cable or via airport. Everything works fine. Via cable i got the Gigabit speed. I now wanted to hook up my Mac Mini from the living room via Ethernet cable onto that airport extreme also. I had to cut the plug off the cable in order to push it through a hole in the wall and thereafter crimp it again using a plug which i got from a friend with the respective tool. The length of the patch cabel is about 7 meters which is about ... 20 feet i would say now if i go into network settings in system preferences, the automatic setting within Ethernet section chooses only 10TBase speed if i change to manual settings and choose 1 Gigabit, the connection is lost, even if i choose 100T. Same Behaviour if i hook up my MacBook onto the same patch cable. Mitght this be a patch cable issue cuz i crimped it and maybe used a standard plug? Are there special plugs to be used for Cat6 patch cables?
    Thanks for a hint

    hi there
just solved it. checked the other end of the patch cable which i did not touch and found that on pair was not inserted as it should have been so they where not at the same positon on each plug. After I replaced that plug and put everything in correct order, i got now my full gigabit speed halleluja

  • How can I tell if my computer is using ethernet or wireless for downloads?

    Hi,
My computer is hooked up via ethernet to my router (base station) which is connected to my DSL modem, and I also have my Airport on because I have extended my network with an airport express so I can stream music to my stereo across the room using iTunes.
I've noticed in the Airport menu that my computer is connected also to my wireless network which I use for getting online with my iPad.
Can I assume that my computer will use ethernet and NOT wireless for accessing the internet, downloading files, etc?
How can I tell which network connection is being used? Are there tools for monitoring the network that would allow me to easily determine if a particular download is going over the ethernet or the wireless connection?
Clearly, I want to use the hard line ethernet connection for everything and use the wifi only for my streaming music function for speed purposes...
    Thanks!!!!
    Elisabeth

    Hi,
Internet is served on the priority basic from the System Prefrences Network pane.
If ethernet is on top you getting it from ethernet if Airport and so on...
So depending on internet speeds set the priority to access fast internet speeds.

  • MacBook no longer connects wirelessly to internet after using ethernet

So: here at home I have an airport extreme and a time capsule. The airport extreme connects to the cable modem, and the time capsule extends the wireless network created by the extreme. I was trying to do an initial time machine backup from the MacBook, so I plugged it in with an ethernet cable to speed things up. After using the cable, the MacBook will simply not connect to the internet if I connect wirelessly to the network. When wireless accessing the network, I can see the time capsule's shared drive, etc, but I can't connect through to the wider internet.
    Any suggestions?

have you tried doing a power cycle on your modem and airport?

  • Streaming using ethernet

    Hello
i looking for a suggestion a practical one. i want to stream data using ethernet cable from controller pxie 8130 ethernet slot,i have connected the controller to my PC using an ethernet cable(like form pxi 5142 digitizer onbord memory to controller 8130 memory and then from controller  memory to my PC).
1-Can i make an application for acqusition on my PC labview, then using this can i acquire the data direct form controller
        memory to PC memory.
2- Or  i have to store my data first form digitizer to controller Hardisk and then from controller hardisk to pc  i can move
it using some other application like clint/server since it then would be a file to transfer.
3- what can be the bottleneck's if the memory of PC,controller, digitzer is 256Mb each.
     Regards

    Hello COMSIS,
Let's brake this down into small parts here and step through the data as it goes from signalall the way back to host computer. I'll assume that you are sampling on one channel at the full rate.  Since we can sample at 100 MS/s and each sample is streamed back as 2 Bytes of data, we would be streaming at 200 MB/s whichshould work with your chassis (should be a 250 MB/s limit as per PCIe spec's).  So, your card will not be a bottle neck.
Once you bring the data back into LabVIEW, you will more than likely have to use a producer/consumer architecture.  Your producer loop will put your data into a queue that will be read out in your consumer queue.  In the consumer queue you will want to use TCP comunication to stream your data back to your non PXI computer.  This DevZone outlines how you would do it in an embedded application, but you can also use it with a Windows based PXI system.
Here my knowledge of LabVIEW memory allocation and TCP communication speeds is a little lacking, so we might not be able to keep up with the data rates and so you may need to go with your other idea of storing it to a disk and then FTP'ing it back to your host computer.  To get the best answers, I would post the second half of your question on a LabVIEW board and just include a link back to this thread.  Once you post there, post back on this thread with a link to the LabVIEW post so that anyone who comes onto this post later can get the complete answer.

  • Back-up with Time Capsule using Ethernet?

I want to backup 1TB of data from an iMac HD using the iMac's ethernet connection. This is not a first connection to the Time Capsule ; I need to recreate the backup after a hard disk failure and replacement.
Time Capsule sticks to the wireless network, and after 7 days running estimates another 7 days to complete the backup.  Attempts to stop and restart, or change configuration result in a complete restart of the backup.
The TC is connected to iMac ethernet port and on router wireless network, on a wireless "N" connection.
    Hardware/Software:
iMac 2010 model running OS10.8.3 Mountain Lion
    Time Capsule 4th Generation
    Airport Utiility 6.2
Solutions tried after researching various support sites:
Turned off wireless network on iMac - disc drops from network and cannot be mounted using ethernet alone
In Network Preferences rearranged service order to give ethernet priority
Removed TC from wireless network (through Airport Utility); disc cannot mount without a wireless connection, so reinstalled it as a wireless device again
Erased TCs hard disk (using airport utility) to restart backup
Removed TC from Time Machine preferences, and reinstalled adding TC as a new disk
Turned off anti-virus programme (Clam Anti-Virus)
None of this has worked.  Are there ideas that would speed this process using ethernet?

Thank you for your help, and the very useful link to Time Machine support.
Unfortunately your solution didn't work.  I went through the process a couple of times to make sure that I had it right, but I still couldn't connect, mount or identify the TC, but it did lead me find a solution that worked:
    TC factory reset
Locate the TC identifying data (in my case this was "Time Capsule b5c917"); Airport Utility locates the disc as part of the preliminary setup process
Did not go any further with setup, or reinstall the network connection (through Airport Utility); so flashing yellow light on TC
    Connect ethernet cable
    Shut down Airport Utility
    Turn off wireless on iMac
Go to Finder, select Go drop down menu. Go to connection history on "Connect to Server" (Clock symbol on right of display) and click to display drop down of previous connections, select the TC name matching the identifying TC data to connect
TC is now connected through ethernet and starts back-up, recommencing where previously halted session ended, and estimated back-up completion reduces from 7 days to 12 hours
At completion dismount disc and disconnect ethernet
Open Airport Utility and setup TC as a wireless device (using the standard Apple process)
Open Time Machine and remove ethernet connected TC from backup disc list
Add newly setup TC as a wireless backup device in Time Machine
    Test backup using wireless connection
    Success. !
This is not an elegant or straightforward solution, but it worked, and solved a problem that has bugged me since getting the Time Capsule.  Thank you again for your help.
The same process should also work for an ethernet connection to restore data to a Mac.  I have previously used a wireless connection for a system restore, and it is painfully slow.
I hope this discussion helps others with the same frustrating problem, and wakes Apple up.  Apple need to do a much better job of explaining alternative methods of connecting Time Capsules, especially where large amounts of data are involved.  Expecting a wireless connection to run for 14 days to complete a backup (or restore) is just not practical, reasonable, or acceptable.

  • Apple TV won't use ethernet

I am currently using wireless to connect the ATV but I want to change to ethernet to improve the speed.
ATV general network settings say to use Ethernet just plug in a cable. I have the cable plugged in but it is still using wireless.
I have rebooted both the router and atv.
    any clues?

Have you tried another cable or ensured the current one is correctly seated.
