Log into your router by going to 192.168.1.1 - username should be admin and password could be any of the following:
    password
    password1
the serial number of our router (look at the sticker located on the bottom/side of the router)
There should be an option there to turn the wireless radio off.

  • Extending range using ethernet connection

I have an airport extreme that is currently broadcasting a wireless network throughout our house. I would like to be able to use a laptop or Ipad out by the pool, but the signal is week or sometimes doesn't exist. We have a pool house with an ethernet port that is wired into the home network and I would like to hook up an airport express using that ethernet connection to extend the network range (with as little loss of speed and bandwith as possible). How do I do that? Any help would be much appreciated, particularly if you can make it simple, step by step. I have researched other posts on this site, but have gotten lost in the technical jargon. thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions, DaveinOL!
Here's how to do what you want with an AirPort Express:
Temporarily, locate the AirPort Express near your computer and connect a short ethernet cable from the computer to the AirPort Express
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select your AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name to your device, establish a device password and adjust Time Zone Settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) will allow a variety of devices to connect
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as your AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and the Express will restart in 20-25 seconds and you should have a green light. You can now disconnect the ethernet cable you used for setup and locate the Express where you need it.
This type of setup is known as a "roaming network" because computers will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal as they "roam" around your house and outside area.

  • I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups and it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule to use with my Mac running latest Maverics. After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups from my small driveand it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I overcame the permissions by allowing both paths to have read and write access to anyone but that didnt solve it until I copied it into the DATA directory which I created on the Airport Time Capsule.
I had already discovered the TIME MACHINE How to transfer backups but I am struggling still with the item and cannot currently get it to work. My setup seems to have created a wireless link to my router which is what I wanted and in that set up there are three options. I have simply gone for the extension of my network. I ignored the other option there which I cannot remember something like DNS? That may be the problem becasuse when I remove the Ethernet connector it just doesnt go anywhere.
I have also found I cannot update my TIME MACHINE software (currently 1.3) as although Apple tell me I should be able to set backups hourly daily or weekly I have only ever been able to run it hourly when i would prefer longer intervals so thought an update might be necssary.
Also tried to get an update for my Airport Utility (Currently 6.3.2 but cannot find one even though I have read there might be one available and again this might be the problem.
Have reset the Time Capsule now about a dozen times.
Following the instructions and trying to copy my existing backup it suggests you need to copy it to the root directory but that is when I get some sort of security issue and I found I could only get it to accept if I dragged my .backupdb to the DATA directory on the Time Capsule. I dont even know if I do this it will work when I come to use it.
I therefore found your reply of no more help than i had discovered but I hope you return to read this note because I really do need some help.
I am intending starting again in the next couple of days and fully documenting what I do and what I see and then as I suspect it will be no different and I will then seek an appointment at the Apple Store in Trafford Centre and if that proves unsuccessful then I still have time to return and become a dissatisfied customer with Apple for the first time in a long experience with Apple. I have noticed frightening notes on the conversations which point to problems of Mavericks working with Airport Time Machine!! So in the end it might not be me doing anything wrong. Unfortunately you do feel left out in the dark sometimes that is why I hope you can respond with a solution?

  • Using Ethernet network and Wireless to connect to ARD

Hi, I am using ARD to connect 2 mac minis, 1 macbook pro and a G4 powerbook. I have been having some serious issues with trying to network them all together. When I connect 3 of the machines using ethernet and an airport extreme everything is fine, but the 4th machine is uncontrollable. It shows up on the scanner but shows up as offline. Has anyone had any luck using a combination of ethernet and wireless? It is all through the same network, but the hope is that the 2 laptops can connect wirelessly to the mac minis.

No my DSL modem is not a dumb one, its a DSL modem router, "qwest Actiontec dsl modem wireless gateway", GT701.
To avoid confusion in future support threads, you should refer to that as a "router" or "modem/router", rather than simply as a modem.
This configuration works fine, both computers are on the network, get assigned different IP addresses by the DSL Modem, and most of the time can see each other and the internet just fine, as long as the iMac keeps the Network settings that I set, for the IP address of the DSL-Modem router ("xxx.xx.0.1"), but occassionally after a restart it will revert back to using "xxx.xx.1.1" for the router IP address which is not a valid IP address on my LAN.
Why would the iMac try and use the old settings when I specifically set and LOCKED the correct settings?
If the "modem router" is configured to be a DHCP server and if your computers are configured to get their network settings via DHCP (Network panel of System Preferences, "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP"), then in theory you shouldn't have that problem.

  • After Using Ethernet Connection For Months Airport Will No Longer Connect.

For the last few months I have been connecting my iMac to my Netgear Wireless Router by an Ethernet cable, as I no longer needed to use a wireless connection.
Yesterday, my son tried to connect to my wireless router with his Toshiba laptop. He connected to the wireless signal easily but his web browser was unable to connect to the internet.
So I decided to test my iMac wirelessly to see if I could spot his problem.
I turned on Airport and after a while a window appeared saying,"None of your preferred networks are available".
Yet my network was listed (together with several neighbours' networks).
I highlighted my network and clicked "Join". After a short while the message "Connection Failed" appeared.
Obviously I have tried this numerous times and in different ways to no avail.
I actually changed the name of my network a few weeks ago and tested it successfully at the time.
So my son can connect his PC to the network but can't access the internet, whilst I cannot connect to my router even though I can see it listed.
Any useful suggestions ...... mainly to get my Airport connecting first?
Needless to say when I use an ethernet connection I have no problems accessing the internet.

Sorry, didn't want to post verbose instructions if they weren't needed. Let's go one by one:
Is he getting all the right IP information - IP/mask/gateway/DNS?
Go to a command prompt (Start/run, type CMD then Enter). Then type IPCONFIG then Enter. This will give you everything except DNS. Run IPCONFIG /ALL. Note the DNS server(s). Compare this output with your Mac (System Preferences/Network).
If so, from Terminal, ping the gateway, then DNS, then yahoo.com. Where/when does it fail? If it fails at yahoo.com, does it resolve the name to the IP address?
Whoops, my bad, Terminal is Mac. From the command prompt you're hopefully still in (if not, run CMD again), ping the default gateway listed in the IPCONFIG output from above (type PING followed by gateway address; looks like #.#.#.#) Successful? If so, ping DNS server from IPCONFIG /ALL output. Successful? If so, ping yahoo.com. First, does it resolve yahoo.com to an actual address (i.e. 68.180.206.184)? Do you get replies, or does it timeout?

  • E3000 severe drop in speed from ethernet connection to wireless

I have an E3000 connected to COMCAST. My download speed with an Ethernet connection to my computer (Windows 7) is just over 60Mbbs. When I connect to the internet using wireless only (computer adjacent to the router), my download speed drops 50% or more. Is this normal or is there some setting adjustment I need to make? I just loaded the most recent firmware for the E3000,

Its best to check speeds on wired LAN cables as there are many factors that contribute to bad results on WiFi. Different WiFi device may exhibit slower than expected results.

Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Automatic switch over from wired ethernet connection to wireless (different internet networks)

I have an Imac connect to 2 different internet service providers 1) a wired connection via ethernet giving a 10mbps download speed but unfortunatley the signal can randomly drop for a period of seconds, minutes or even hours, which I then have to manually disable the ethernet connection and switch to the wireless provider, a tedious task..
I was wondering if there is a way whereby i can set the ethernet conection to automically switch to the wireless connection during the periods explained above?
    Thanks for your assictance.
    David

    OK, thanks for the update.
Let's try to figure out which device is actually providing the PPPoE service. It will be either your modem or the AirPort Extreme router.
Normally, the PPPoE connection service is established on the modem by using a web page for configuration. If you have setup the PPPoE service this way, then the AirPort Extreme must be set to Connect Using -- Ethernet.
Please use your computer to check some settings as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup > Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connect Using setting near the top of the page
It will be set to either "Ethernet" or "PPPoE"
    Which setting do you see?
Note...if you are still using OS 10.4.x as you indicate, this may not be the path to find the setup information. It may be in an older application on your computer called AirPort Admin Utility.
Sorry, I can't remember much about 10.4.x, so you may need to look around a bit on your computer.

  • Can AppleTV be setup to use Ethernet instead of wireless?

When I use the wireless, I often get freezing and jumping during movie playback. I've connected the AppleTV via ethernet cable (Cat6) to the router which connects the all systems in the house, but unless I have it connected via wireless... none of the computers (iTunes) see it. Is there some setting necessary to allow ethernet connection to the iTunes library or is AppleTV only capable of wireless connections?

The Apple TV can be connected either wirelessly or with wired ethernet and it automatically detects which to use based upon whether an ethernet cable is connected to the unit. If none of your computers (iTunes) can see the Apple TV when it is connected with the ethernet cable then you either have a setup or network problem or the other computers are on a different local network.
Have you tried restarting or resetting the Apple TV after you switch the connections? You can restart the Apple TV by holding down on the remote's menu and minus ("-") buttons simultaneously for about six seconds.

  • Can't print using ethernet connection

I am running Lion (10.7.4) on new Macbook Pro and am not able to connect my printer (HP LaserJet 5000GN) via an ethernet connection. I've downloaded the software drivers from Apple (v. 2.9) and used software update to make sure I am fully up to date, and restarted.
When I select System Preferences>Print and Scan and the click "+" in the dialog box, the Add Printer window comes up with nothing in the default window. When I go to the IP window in Add Printer the three options are IPP, LPD, and Socket. If I enter my IP address in the address box (I get a "Valid and complete address" verification in the window, I also pinged the printer successfully in Network Utility), and select the HP LJ 5000 series in the "print using" box, IPP gives me an error and LPD and Socket tells me "Unable to verify the printer on your network. It can not be currently determined if ‘192.168.0.4’ supports the HP JetDirect Protocol. Would you still like to create the queue?" If I select it anyway, it gets hung up on the "Setting up '[name of IP address]'" popup (shows it's running but never completes) unless I click the configure button and check the boxes.
After checking the boxes if I then go back to the Print & Scan Window, a printer appears with my IP address as its name. If I try to print, the Print Queue window comes up but the progress bar just runs endlessly and I get a message in Print Queue window, "Microsoft Word - Unable to verify your printer on your network." (The first part is because I tried to print a MSW document, but I've tried other software and it still fails to print.)
I've also tried this with different ethernet cables and with a direct ethernet connection vs. on a hub. The printer was working fine via ethernet connection on my old Macbook running 10.4, so I know this is some kind of software/configuration problem. This is an old printer so ethernet is the only option for connecting to the computer.
Any help would be much appreciated.

seems like it's all working now. i selected apple talk, and it found my laserwriter instantly.
    forgot about apple talk!

  • How to use ethernet connections on a TC that joined other wireless network?

My TC is setup to join a Linksys wireless network and works fine as network drive and backup utility for Time Machine.
I have a HP all in one printer connected to the TC by ethernet cable but that printer is not getting an IP address. When I connect the ethernet cable to the Linksys router (in another room) it gets the IP address right away.
Is it possible at all to connect the printer by ethernet cable to a TC that joins another wireless network?
If so what do I need to change?
    Thanks,
    Menno

On the Mac that the printer is plugged into, go to System Preferences/Sharing and turn on Printer Sharing.
The rest of the Macs can now use the shared printer as long as that Mac is turned on...

  • Can I use my iPhone 4s wireless signal, connect to my laptop and have the laptop use the signal? Not as a hotspot using 3GS but the wireless network.

I'm with the O2 network, which allows me access to the Cloud wifi service as part of my contract. My laptop cannot connect to this network without paying a fee.
I'd like to connect my laptop to the iPhone and allow it to share the Internet access provided to the iPhone.
    Is it possible?

  • Can't Convert to Ethernet Connection From Wireless

Using the Internet Connect, I select Ethernet and insert the password and "Connect". No connection. Then, If I go to the System Preferences network window, it will not let me change the selection to ethernet. Another window opens that says that network setting have been changed by another application. When I click the OK button, the window recycles and I have to force quit the SP. Not long ago, I upgraded from Panther to Tiger. Is this related? While the laptop runs fine on my wireless system, I want to use it to check the download speed at my IP's modem, which is located a long distance from my iMac.

I have had this question answered in another part of the forum. The problem is due to a software security update. It requires plist files to be deleted and network settings reentered.

  • HT204350 How many hours (maximum) does it take to migrate 400  GB from one MacBook Pro to another MBP using Ethernet connection?

How long do I need for migrating data from old MBP to a new MBP?

The fastest way would be to connect the two computers over Firewire, start the new MBP in Target Mode, and either clone the whole hard drive from the old MBP or only copy across the things you need. Doing it that way would take about 1-2 hours depending on how much stuff you're copying.
Ethernet would be a lot slower.
