Using european unlocked iphone 4 with T-Mobile US - does it work?

I was trying to use an old unlocked iPhone 4 (purchased in Sweden, GSM) with a new t-mobile (US) pay as you go SIM card, but it does not seem to work (get error message about SIM card).  Anyone having same experience?  Are unlocked european iphones blocked in the US?
When at the t-mobile store, we tried several SIM cards, always got the same error message and the t-mobile guy said the phone is locked. I know for sure it is unlocked, since I have used the same phone with different carriers (Telia, Comviq and others) overseas (different SIM-cards) with no problem.
Anyone having any idea of what the problem is?

The phone was purchased unlocked (paid high price).  But I guess there is a chance I got ripped off... If so, why does it work with different carriers in Sweden with different SIM cards?

    I was given an unlocked iPhone 3G as a gift from a friend outside US. I currently use T-Mobile plan for several family phones in eastern US and have surpassed plan's minimum service term. I also have Verizon FIOS service bundle at home. A simple and inexpensive option is to replace my current T-Mobile phone with the iPhone by using existing SIM card. Is this possible? If so, do I lose any important functionality on iPhone? Is there an advantage to trying to add my wireless phones & iPhone to my Verizon FIOS bundle instead?     The iPhone is a GSM phone, and Verizon has a CDMA network. Not compatible.
    The only other GSM network provider in the U.S. that comes anywhere close to AT&T in terms of the number of subscribers and network coverage nationwide is T-Mobile, but I don't believe T-Mobile's 3G network in the U.S. is compatible with the iPhone, and you won't have visual voicemail access when using a T-Mobile SIM card with an unlocked iPhone as you would with AT&T. The iPhone's visual voicemail feature is one of the best phone features IMO.

    I have an carrier question. So my friend gave me her old iPhone 5 today to use with tmobile. Right now, I have a regular sized SIM card that does not fit into the Verizon iPhone. If I go to the tmobile store to get a nano SIM card, can I just pop it in the iphone 5 and it'll work? Or is the iphone carrier specific to verizon? Any advice is appreciated.

    The iPhone 5 activated with Verizon is unlocked on the GSM side to use any carrier's SIM card even with GSM carriers in the U.S.
    You will need to activate the iPhone with T-Mobile with the new SIM card. There should be a setup assistant for the activation and the T-Mobile Store can help you with this if there is a problem.

    This would be a useful feature for personal and company numbers but using one mobile, rather than carrying two devices or diverting calls.

    Then go ahead and try it.  You'll find it's probably a load of crap.
    You want 2 numbers, then use Google Voice or TalkaTone
    Those are US based only Apps or numbers so no good. I won't be wasting money by just trying something either, especially because using a dual sim would mean purchasing another sim card on either pay as you go or monthly contact.

    Verizon's network does not use SIM cards for 3G phones.  If it's unlocked you'll need to call Verizon and have them put the ESN for your iPhone on your line manually

    to be able to restore you need to put it into recovery mode first so it won't ask for the passcode
    this article will go over how to put into recovery mode at the bottom of the article:

    basically with it being powered off hold the home button while plugging it in and keep holding the home button until it shows the iTunes logo with a chord and it will then let you restore the device in iTunes

    The iPhone will work except for not being able to connect to any LTE networks there, and the warranty if needed will be valid in the U.S. only.

    yes you can if there are GSM carriers in Mongolia.  If your phone breaks, you will need to send it to somone you know in the US to bring it to Apple for repair.
