Using External Equipment that is Firewire equipped with MBA

I have an original MBA. USB port and DV port. But no Firewire.
The webcam on this machine is broken, will cost a lot to fix etc. etc. You know, to fix it I need a new screen, half the cost of the MBA etc. etc., and all very sniffy about it at the Apple Store ! Attitude seems to be, what should I expect of a machine that is 18 months old, and perhaps I should buy a new one and pay them another £1300. Methinks no !
So, for the occasional time that I want to use a webcam I want to resurrect my original eternal iSight. But it has Firewire connection.
So, is it possible to find a connector that will turn Firewire to USB so that I can use my Firewire iSight through the USB port on my MBA ?
Simples ? Probablies not, I am guessing ? Never is with Macs.
Thanks.

No. The technologies are completely different.
Consider an external USB webcam: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
Get one that supports the "UVC" standard, UVC will work without adding any software to your Mac.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

• Using external drives that were used with a windows laptop/pc

im interested in getting a mac book pro.
and im just a little scared of not being able to use my external drives with it.
all my drives were being accessed with a windows based laptop or pc.
will i have to do anything to make the drives work with apple's OS?
also is there a way to find out by looking at the mac book pro box in best buy to see if the mack book is the latest model? i would much prefer to buy the mac book from a store rather then online, and leave buying online as a last resort.

There's another issue to take care of besides the FAT32/HFS+ volume format. Do you want to be able to boot off your external drive once you put a bootable clone (i.e., SuperDuper or CCC) on it?
If you do, you have to change the partitioning scheme first. Windows/DOS drives come partitioned using the Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme, but Intel Macs need the drive to be partitioned using the GUID scheme to boot from it. Changing the partition scheme requires a complete erasure of all information on the drive.
To do this, open Disk Utility, select the external device (not the volume, which is indented below the device identifier), click on the Partition tab, click on each partition on the drive (under Volume Scheme:) and remove it by clicking on the - button and confirming the erasure, after which the Options... button will enable. Click on it and select the GUID scheme, click Ok. Then create as many new partitions as needed, which you can use them to create and use bootable clones as desired.
You can have multiple bootable clones on a (large enough) drive, and select which one to boot from by holding down the Option key before the startup sound. If you have an older PowerPC Mac, you need to use the Macintosh Partition Scheme instead of GUID.

• Using external HD from a WinXP system with MBP - can't reformat external HD

Hi,
I have an external hard drive that I've been using with my Windows XP desktop computer. Before I got my MBP a month ago, I stored my iTunes library and all my digital photos on the external HD. I'd like to use the same HD for my MBP, but I can't reformat the HD when I connect it for the first time, as all of my music and photos are on it.
Will this be a problem? If so, what, if anything, can be done to ensure that I can use the HD with my MBP while maintaining the integrity of the existing content?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

USC2000
If you have enough space on your MBP, of course, you can simply copy the stuff on to it from the external, then reformat.
Your MBP should be able to read the drive without it needing reformatting regardless. If the drive is formatted as Fat32, then Leopard should be able to both read and write to it. If it is formatted as NTFS gthen it will be able to read, but not write.
One thing to be aware of, though, is that USB 2 drives are much slower than Firewire ones on Macs (and also a little slower than when connected to USB on most PC's) . If this is a USB drive you might want to think about getting yourself a good FW drive instead for use on the new computer.

• Student using a program that looked like notebook with tabs

I was in a lecture today and saw someone in front of me with their lovely Macbook Pro opened out and they had on the screen a notebook style looking document open and they were writing their notes on it. The graphics made it look like an actual notepad and on the right hand side it had what looked like tabs that would hyperlink the person to each section they wanted to refer to. I looked through Pages and Keynote templates but haven't found anything like this. It seems like a great way to keep track of and organise notes.
The closest thing I have found is the 'Notebook' template on Keynote, but the coils of the notepad are across the top. I'd really like to know if anyone has their own similar system of note taking done like this or if anyone knows what program this person was using!
Thanks in advance.

Someone found a template on iWork Community with lined paper. You can find details in this topic.

• Unable to use external compiler support in CVI 2009 with VC++ 2005

The compiler gives me this error message:
cvisupp.lib(setprec.obj) : fatal error LNK1103: debugging information corrupt; recompile module
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Well, I do call InitCVIRTE in my main, but it doesn't find it in cvisupp.lib, it finds _InitCVIRTEEx@12 this way:
00404808 _InitCVIRTE@4 initcls.obj
00404818 _InitCVIRTEEx@12 initcls.obj
004048FC _CloseCVIRTE@0 initcls.obj
The identifier cvisupp.lib is no where in the map of my project.
I do see this library in the NI folders on the PC however.
I think we may be crossed up here in what we're doing - I am building the application from the LabWindows 2009 framework in release mode using the VCPP 2005 compiler as an external compiler ... are you building from Visual Studio or from CVI 2009?

• Using external drive for MacBook that was previously used for PC

I can't be the only person who'd had this issue...but I can't seem to find anything about this problem.
I have an external drive that I was using for my iTunes library on my PC. I recently upgraded to a MacBook. I was hoping to continue using my external drive for my iTunes library. When I plugged the external drive into the MacBook, it characteristically made my life very easy by quickly setting up itunes for me. It wasn't until the next day I realized that my entire library had been copied from the external drive onto the MacBook hard drive. This was not my intention.
It seems, however, that though my nifty new MacBook can easily read and use any files from my old external drive, it absolutely will not write to the external drive. In fact, even though I've repeatedly changed my iTunes settings to use the external drive for the iTunes library, it continues to write CD's onto the Macbook hard drive.
sigh
I'm very worried that:
1. I've now used 4 of my 5 "authorized" machines
2. I've used another move that I can make with the music I've purchased on iTunes and I will now have to use yet another move in order to make this right
3. I fear if I back up my music now, because of 1 & 2 I will lose my rights to some of my music.
If anyone has any help for any of these issues I would be very grateful! This is my first Apple in about 20 years, so be gentle!

i'm guessing this is a NTSF formatted drive. in order for your Mac to write to it, you need to install e.g. NTFS-3G

above will probably take care of that
I'm very worried that:

you can deauthorize the PC if no longer in use. also, once you've reached the "5-computer" limit, you get the option (once per year) to *deauthorize all*, then reauthorize those in use. click here for information.
2. I've used another move that I can make with the music I've purchased on iTunes and I will now have to use yet another move in order to make this right
not sure what you mean by move.
3. I fear if I back up my music now, because of 1 & 2 I will lose my rights to some of my music.
no. you can transfer purchased content between authorized machines as much as you want. see _*iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers*_.

• Mixing when using external midi devices . . .

Hi,
This is the first time I'm mixing a project using an external midi device. Formerly, using an older version of DP, I would record each track from the midi device into an audio track before mixing because those tracks don't "bounce" when mixing. Anybody here who uses external devices do it differently?
Thanks, josf

Using the external I/O plug in you can bounce your external midi instruments to audio tracks in realtime in logic, but you have to add the New multi instrument in the environment so that it can be represented in the external destination parameter of the EXternal I/O plug in.
At least I think this is how things work. You also need an audio interface with the outs of your hardware to the ins of the inputs and the midi cables configured.
But.. I think there is a latency issue there.. anyone know how to compensate for this? Like if I bounce a track in realtime in logic.. it records the time that it takes the audio to "get into" the software.. It never bounces a track right on the beat, as if I were to bounce a track from say the EXS sampler.. When I do it inside logic it bounces it right on the beat.. with no "dead space" beforehand.. but if I use external equipment there is always a lag.. any suggestions?

• Stop the constant pop-ups telling me to get Firefox 5. Something I use all the time is not compatible with it so I do not want 5.0. I get a box about every hour.

Actually there are two things I use a lot that are not compatible with Firefox 5. I did switch to it and discovered the big problem, so I had to go back to my previous Firefox. One of them that I use constantly for my passwords is Roboform -- I don't remember which one but one of the most recent. I get a box in the middle of my computer about once an hour saying that I should switch to Firefox 5. It is driving me CRAZY. How can I make it stop?
Also, who has to make Roboform and Firefox 5 compatible?

Every add-on developer is responsible for updating their add-on as Mozilla releases new versions of Firefox. Check with Roboform for an update for their Firefox add-on.
You can use the Add-on Compatibility Reporter to try and "fix" that other add-on.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
ACR has worked with every 4.0 extension that I have tried it with on Firefox 5.0 - but there may be some add-ons where it won't work, and the add-on has to actually be modified by the original developer.

• Turning off internal monitor while using external one

Hello, Apple Support Communities.
Before OSX Lion, anyone could turn off internal monitor while using external one, by waking up computer with lid closed, and the internal monitor will be kept turned off. But now, -I wonder what made Apple to think this way- Lion will turn on the internal one back on.
I don't care about all sorts of reasons why should I or shouldn't I desire to this. I just want it, because I have nice big monitor, which is apparently bigger than my Macbook Pro. Besides using double monitor will just exhaust my poor laptop. -mine is bit old-
I found ridicoulus answer from community, saying I should try fridge magnet. Sorry, but I don't want risk my whole computer, especially my HDD from getting magnetic damage. It happened so many times, -thanks my little bro- so now I am sick of magnet. I don't think Apple will cover this AKA magnetic damage anyway. -It wouldn't just damage, just erase your HDD-
So.... Any helpful insights? Thanks.

Nevermind. I found solution. Though it cost me 24 bucks.
Now Apple is seriously making me to consider to roll back to sucking Windows.
Thanks Jobs!

• Which portable hard drives to store TimeMachine backups with MBA?

Hi, I am looking forward to purchasing a MBA within a few months. In the menawhile, I am moving around with and old iBook. I need to purchase a portable Hard Disk for backups, but I need to make sure that it will work with MBA to store TimeMachine Backups.
I read some user review in the Apple online store that says that Lacie Rugged Hard Disk does NOT wrk with MacBook Air. I was surprised.
Does anybody know of a portable hard disk that can survive shocks AND works with MBA?
Would Iomega eGo do?
Thanks in advance

I'm trying to install Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a new ASUS ASM11BB001O computer equipped with 64-bit Windows 7. I use a "bundle" approach, first loading Photoshop 6, then upgrading with CS upgrade and then CS3 upgrade. The installation goes smoothly until I add PS CS, and then it balks at the "accept" Adobe conditions screen. I have two other (Gateway) computers with Windows 7, 64-bit, on both of which the PS-6, CS-CS3 pathway worked fine. Any thoughts on how to get this working? Thanks

If your goal is to install and activate CS5 there is no need to install anything preceding it. You will only need to have the serial number from the preceding version that you upgrade from (CS3 I guess).
