Using external mic with iMac 27 i7 under bootcamp with Windows 7

Hi,
I've recently got myself an iMac 27" with the i7 upgrade. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32bit for gaming (Snow Leopard for everything else). I have a headset with two 3.5mm plugs, one for the headphones, one for the mic. I can't get the mic to work (headphones work fine though). I plug it into the line in port (as it's the only other port when the headphones are plugged in) but this doesn't work.
Does anyone know how to get this to work?
I read somewhere that the headphone port on the iMac is a "triband" port, so would work with the headphones provided with the iphone that have 3 bands on it (stereo sound and mic) or something similar...

Two things to try, first make sure your Win7 disk is spotlessly clean, my superdrive regularly spits out even slight smudges. then if that doesn't clear it up here is a maintenance tip with the reset:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
SMC RESET

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

Using external drive with windows and osx 10.5

I have formated an external drive using disk utility as Fat 32. Mac osx sees it fine but windows does not. I used partition magic to format it as fat 32 and windows sees it fine, but osx still sees it by the old name and doesn't see the files I loaded on it. I did it twice from partition magic with the same result. the mac knows the right amount of free space but doesn't see the directory, it sees the old directory from the mac formatting? I solved the problem by formatting the drive in OSX using mac extended which cleared the ms dos partition the mac created, then I used Partition Magic and created a fat 32 volume. Windows and Leopard see it fine now. Why the Fat 32 formatting from Leopard did not work I can not tell you. A bug maybe or maybe my install has a bug.

I'm trying to use an external iSight camera in iChat instead of the built-in one but when connected iChat just gives a beach ball. Searching for similar issues mentions that both cameras should be available in the prefs. I wonder if this is still the case with a current iMac. I'm using a Lacie FW 400 to 800 cable.

Here are some options you can consider, m4rtin
(1) If your Firewire port doesn't see any Firewire device with any cable, reset your Mac's Firewire using the process in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
(2) When you get your System Profiler showing your FW devices again, if you still have problems and are daisy chaining your external iSight with another FW device, remove the intermediate device(s) and test external iSight again when it is connect directly.
(3) As explained in this post, your LaCie cable may be the problem:

The simplest way I can suggest to test this is to try a different brand of cable. The search that Ralph suggests will show you that both Belkin and NewEgg have been reported as working to connect external iSight with FW800 Macs.
(4) Alternatively, you can use your old, known-working FW400 cable if you use a 800 -> 400 adapter

Distorted Tempo Using External Mic

Hello,
I've been trying to record my electric guitar using an external mic with a USB attachment, but whenever I record in Garageband, the tempo is always slightly distorted. It's not that I'm playing off tempo because I recorded the same attempts with a tape player and the results have been fine. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to solve it?

Aggregate devices are setup in the Audio/Midi setup of OSX Utilities, (Not in Logic). It gives you a way of having for than one audio i/o device. Once you have set up your aggregated devices in Audio/Midi, when you start Logic you will need to go into Audio preferences and choose the Aggregate device.

Using external libraries with Developer Studio 7.1 Composition Environment

I downloaded DS 7.1 CE and tried to develop a simple application which uses an external library.
I created a development component for "external library" for the local development -> MyComponent, giving it the name "test2" (for the domain basis).
I imported the external library file using Import -> File System , then selecting the .jar file.
In the component properties browser I added a public part naming it "mylib2" setting the purpose to "ASSEMBLY" (my intention was that the libarry will be transferred during the deployment to the application server).
I right clicked on the public part to "managed entities". I selected the archive tree and checked the library file shown there (the one I imported before). #
Then I opended component properties of my web dynpro project and clicked on "Dependencies". The I chose "Add..." and selected the "test2" development component I created before (see above).
Then I tried to deploy the project (which uses this external library) using "Deploy Archive and Run"
After deployment the browser window opens and shows the ClassNotFoundException
So what did I oversee or do wrong?
BTW: Is it necessary for using external libraries to use a full fletched NWDI? Or can I use external libs also with netweaver development environments freely available for download on sdn.sap.com?
Any hints?

If you want to use external libraries with DCs then you should follow the NWDI completely.

I'm producing a podcast with reporters throughout US and abroad. The iPhone would make perfect recorders but we need to use mics that are more professional. Is there an interface or device available to allow us to use better mics with the iPhone?

Not really. It is theoretically possible but you would need an adaptor that could convert the standard XLR or TRS output of a higher quality mic to the specific TRRS input that the iPhone uses. From there, you would also need something with a better mic preamp that could go between the mic and this input adaptor.
While I am aware of preamps that would work, I don't know of any adaptor that exists to get the job done. If you are looking for higher quality audio than the iPhone can produce, I would recommend using a stand alone handheld recorder for the mean time. I use and Olympus LS10 and its a great unit.

They have to be either plugged in via headphone jack or the dock port at the bottom. If you can. I've used it on apple tv, but that's it. I don't know if the others work, but I don't see why not. Try plugging in speakers in the headphone jack. You will get an answer :)

Using an iPod with Windows Me

As far as I know, you can't use iTunes with Windows Me. I knew that when I bought my iPod, but I figured surely I'd be able to use it without iTunes--with a different program, maybe, like Winamp. Apparently not: my computer wouldn't recognize the iPod as anything but a removable drive, which was fine, except I couldn't play anything on it that way. Tried the installation software that came with the iPod and was told it wouldn't work on anything but a Windows 2000 or XP either.
So then I thought, hey, I've got a semi-functioning Mac OS X at work; I'll just use that to put everything on my iPod, even if I can't use iTunes at home. Great, except it doesn't have the right version of iTunes, won't go online to upgrade, and demands a password to install from the CD. Again using it as an external hard drive, I stick something on it anyway and try to bring it home, whereupon my Windows Me tells me that the iPod needs to be formatted.
This is all making me crazy, because I paid good money for that iPod and I'd really love to, you know, use it. Is there any possible way I can use this iPod with Windows Me, with or without iTunes? Some kind of plug-in I can download, maybe?

I finally figured I had nothing to lose--I'd just downloaded a new version of Real Player, which supposedly will work with iPods and Windows Me--and I let my computer format the iPod, hoping that would let it work with Windows again. Apparently not. Now it won't turn on--it's giving me the folder-and-exclamation-point icon. Resetting it didn't help, and I can't restore it because I can't install the software to my computer in the first place.
I suppose the only thing to do is borrow a friend's computer or something.

Is there a way to use PM4.0 with Windows XPH without purchasing the latest suite or upgrades? I origionally purchased a suite with Pagemaker, Photostyler and Freehand just before Aldus went Adobe, and Win3.1 went Win95, then WinME and WinXP. I miss PM and have several manyscripts saved on PM4.0 and can not export or import them to any current wordprocessing programs. I was very far into one manuscript and am now in a position to finish it up but don't want to have to purchase a whole suite in order to do so. Any suggestions for this old tightwad? Shouldn't that be Win3.0 c.1991? And with a very early of version ATM (Ver 2?) if you want to do anything with fonts?
I think I have a WinME PC in the garage, which if you can re-format with DOS 5 and install Win3 instead (I may have the disks in the garage too), PM4 will positively scream along.
I reckon it's non starter on a modern WinXP PC, as the OS is so different, but if you're willing to experiment, you never know!
But if you want to open some old files to extract the text, you can open the PM4 files and save them with a d/l'ed trial copy of PM7, which will be OK on WinXP

Saving each image as different size - is it an option for you? I would save images with their name as: 20x30.png, 16x20.png etc etc.
Or explain whether you want these in a webpage in which case only one image is necessary and different sizes are displayed with good CSS code. this is question for Dreamweaver forum if this is what you want.
