Using external monitor for video editing.

Hello all,
I own a IMAC that I use for video editing on FC7. I was wondering via Thunderbolt to VGA (or any other way) if there was a way to use an external moniter as my canvus and the internal comands to do so. Also the opinons of doing this. Good? Bad? any good ideas?

Eeewww! Oh, the horror of what you are trying to suggest!
No. A video signal for a computer display and a video signal intended for TV are very very different things. If you want to PROPERLY see what the video you shot looks like, a computer monitor is the LAST place to look. You want to use an HDTV at least. I'd even say avoid computer displays with HDMI inputs...but even those are better than VGA. VGA is a very low quality connection. DVI, HDMI...those are better.
But if your intention is to view your video at full quality...an HDTV is your better option.

i would love the 30" apple but the NEC comes in at 1/2 the price so i can eventually buy two & i would have definitely taken the 24" but its just not suitable for professional video editing from everything I've read - mainly due to glossy screen, colours & calibration
pls can anyone help with any display solutions/setups

Oh PS do the NEC LCD2690WUXi² work flawlessly with the latest "Nehalem" Mac Pros?

Not sure if that model number is here or not, but these are supposed to be very good for color work, though I do know that my old shops are still using their CRT's.

Third party monitors are having some trouble with the new Macs. Mostly because of the mini-display ports on the newest Apple supplied cards, but there seem to be other issues as well. You can definitely expect to use the DVI port and leave the mini display for whatever Apple will force on us next.
Apples 24"? Well, it works fine for most but in Apples own description of the display it was made to connect laptops to.
Edit: I'm sorry, for video work? Most anything in the upper end is fine.

Dual 17'' Displays and an NTSC Monitor for Video Editing

I am trying to hook up two 17'' apple monitors and an NTSC television monitor for video editing, but all I have on the back of my G5 tower is one ADC plug and one DVI plug. Any advice on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

If you run in anything other than the LCD's native resolution your graphics card will be resampling the image. This inevitably distorts the image as pixels must be discarded to create the display. Typically this softens the image.

Is a ATI Radeon X1900XT (512 MB) card enough to drive a single monitor for video editing

My son just given an older mac pro.
2 x 3 GHZ Quad Intel Xeon.
OSX Lion
The video card installed is an ATI Radeon X1900XT (512 MB)
Is this video card sufficient to drive a single monitor for video editing and basic graphics work in PhotoShop, etc?

I am planning to buy mac mini 2.5Gzh. I will be using it mainly for video editing and I am planning to upgrade up to 8GB. Is it a good buy or should I try some other alternative.

I am planning to buy my next desktop. I will be using this mainly for video editing. I am not a professional video editor, I normally do home made videos for youtube, like tutorial, DIY project etc. I use Nikon D3100 camera and some basic green screen techniques as part of recording. So my basic video editing would be just syncing audio, editing videos to cut un-necessary frames etc and some basic effects. I am also planning to buy final cut pro.
So my question is should I buy the mac mini or Imac?

Sure...yes, that makes it POSSIBLE to read the files natively in FCP...if they come from a Panasonic camera. BUT...just try working with those files. Right away the system won't be nearly as responsive as it would if they were ProRes. First...there are no sequence settings for that format...so you'll have to use ProRes and have a green render bar. BUT, that's no big deal. The big deal is trying to work with the AVCHD format, which is VERY processor intensive...inside an application that doesn't like to work with much outside of the FCP editing codecs.
Is it possible? Sure? Will it work well...will you be as zippy and error free as if you converted to ProRes? Not by a long shot. OH, but don't just take my word for it. Go ahead...try it and see. No skin off my nose...no waste of my time. See how well this works.
I'm just here to relate real world working solutions to issues. And yes, I did try that plugin, and boy, was editing a pain.

However, from my perspective, and that is personal, I prefer 3840 x 1080 resolution with dual monitors over 1920 x 1080 with a single monitor, but that is because I very often have Firefox, Filezilla, Dreamweaver and some other applications open at the same time, switching between the Adobe forums, Gmail accounts, Notebook results from the PPBM5 data submissions, PPBM5 form submissions, MySQL access, phpadmin pages to update the database, the PPBM5 results pages and various DW .php pages for the maintenance of our database and switching back and forth between various versions of PR. I occasionally really run out of real estate with all these applications and could not consider a single monitor with only 1920 x 1080 resolution, even if it were a 105" screen. In the future I would even like to have a four monitor setup (with MPE hardware support) in a two by two configuration, so that I can freely move my application screens around.
If that happens, notice I say if and not when, my preference for a monitor would be something like 4 Samsung F2380 monitors. Small bezel, great display and panel, affordable.

Best external monitor for text editing

Hi all - I have a 2011 MBP and want to connect it to an external monitor (+ mouse and keyboard) for text editing and web browsing. Text clarity is very important to me. First I've tried to connect a mainstream Acer monitor, and then Lenovo ThinkVision eIPS LT2452pwc at work, and in both cases Mac fonts looked somewhat "fuzzy" where Windows and Linux fonts looked nice and sharp. In all cases I've used native screen resolution. There is nothing wrong with Laptop either (I tried a couple), and it has probably to do with different antialiasing algorithm that Apple is using, which looks good on higher pixel density laptop panels, but not that great on exteranal monitors.
So... any advice from those using Macs with external monitor for text tasks? Obviously there are Mac displays, but I have some concerns about the glare. Then I heard good feedback about Dell UltraSharp and NEC IPS monitors. Trully appreciate your input for somebody new to Mac.

Yes, I did get Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM. I am happy with it with one caviat (which would be the same for 27 Apple monitor). The picture quality is absolutely amazing - the text is very shart and clear, I can't imagine it to be better. The color is very good and natural, plenty of brigtness and contrast to produce a good picture in any light conditions, plus *no glare* screen surface, arguably making this monitor better than the Apple monitor.
The somewhat unexpected caviat is that since this monitor packs pretty high resolution in a 27" screen, the text appears smaller than on most other monitors (but would be the same as on Apple 27" monitor). It even *appears* smaller than on my 13" Macbook Pro, however at closer examination, that turned out to be not true. The text on the monitor is actually bigger than on laptop, but looks smaller since typically the external monitor is farther away from the eyes than a laptop monitor.
At first I wanted to return the monitor and exchange for smaller and lower DPI (read bigger text) 24" Ultrasharp, but then got used to my 27" monitor and decided to keep it. Hope this helps.

Best Monitors for Video editing?

Hey guys. I'm looking at an NEC monitor for editing my stills, and am wondering if this will be suitable for video editing?

These monitors are great for stills, as they cam emulate paper types well, but do I need a more "vibrant" monitor for video? Just worried that my video will look a bit off on these monitors, as it's such a different medium?

Hey Fuzzy, sorry about the format of this reply. Not sure to quote on here the way you did. Your points are addressed numerically.
1. I haven't seen the user manuals, but using http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa271w-bk for example, under color gamut, there's no mention of Rec709. Compare that to: http://www.eizo.com.au/products/coloredge/cg276/index.html#tab02, under preset modes. Not to mention this entire page: http://www.eizo.com/global/solutions/graphics/video_editing_and_post_production.html.
Just seems like NEC isn't playing up their video editng credentials, and I wonder why?
If you can link me to a user manual for any of the above models, which shows that it ships with Rec709 I'd appreciate it.

I have been saving up for a Mac for sometime now and have decided to buy the new Mac Pro when it comes out this December.
I understand that it doesn't come with a monitor so I have been looking into which one would be best to get. I have never had to buy a separate monitor before as I have always had an iMac so maybe there is one that is very popular that most people use that I don't know about. It would mostly be used for video editing on Final Cut and a little bit of Motion and then other general things like music, photos, documents etc.
Ideally 24" or 27" and under £400.

Recommend me a External HD for Video editing + backing up.

I just purchased a 1 TB seagate freeagent pro and the thing will not mount, disk utility does not see it and it's a bit annoying.
1. Can you guys recommend me a good 1tb external HD with firewire 800 for under $250? I've only only seen the firewire 400 at this price.
2. Can I use the same drive I use for video editing for Time Machine as well? Sorry for the noob question but I'm a noob.

I forgot to address your second question re Time Machine.
Time machine sets up a folder on your external drive called Backups.backupdb. This is where all the backups that Time Machine makes are stored. On one of my OWC Mercury drives I have a partition the same size as my internal drive set up for this folder and that partition is what Time Machine uses. The rest of that drive is used for a bootable backup of my internal drive which was made using SuperDuper. So I have two distinct partitions, one of which is exclusively for TM. I've seen posts elsewhere on these forums that state that as long as you don't disturb the Backups.backupdb folder on your external drive you can put other things on it, such as your video editing files, without making separate partitions. That's assuming that your drive has plenty of room available for both. I personally think it's safer to have separate partitions for these purposes.

LCD Monitor for Video Editing: Resolution Concern

I am trying to select an LCD monitor for my newly built computer. I have zeroed in on the DELL SP2309W, 23" Full HD Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with Webcam. The optical resolution is Higher than Full HD at 2048 x 1152.
It is my understanding that Higher than HD Resolution is good for multi-tasking (but DVD movies get stretched and therefore the quality of your videos goes down.), but is it good for video editing with Premiere Elements 7 or 8? Should I be looking at monitors with 1920 x 1080 resolution?

Best Raid 5 expandable external harddrives for video editing & storage.

Hi,
I'm hoping to get opinions and recommendations from the community concerning the best Raid 5 expandable external harddrives for HD video editing and storage. Initially, I'd like to start with an 8tb and have it expandable to 16tb, that will work with both Mac and PC. There seem to be a number of options, but it's difficult to find reviews from video editors. It would be nice to stay under $ 2,000.00.

If the brief includes "fast enough for video editing", you are looking for an editing solution.
If you want it to be fast enough to edit video and be shared by two computers, you are looking at a server type system connected through a very fast network interface (fibre, dual channel iSCSI)
If this is the case, $2k is not going to do it.
What it comes down to is this - Basic backup can be had relatively inexpensively as can direct connect RAID systems. The complexity and cost comes from the shared network storage with enough bandwidth to support multiple systems.
What do you want for your $2000?

Using and rec on external monitor for photo editing

ON another forum someone said that the MBP has only a 6 bit output for color on it's laptop screen.
Now what about running an external monitor, 6 or 8 bit for the MBP?
I have to admit even though I use a monitor calibration for editing my pictures on the MBP I find I always get varying results. I sometimes use my old external crt a 20" mitsubishi for photo editing.
What is a good external monitor to use with the MBP for Pro photos and will I get 8 bit color?

Suggestions for setting up external storage for video editing please?

I am just starting up as a one-man video-editing business, using a 24 inch iMac running Snow Leopard, with Final Cut Studio. I have realised I'll need an external hard drive for HD footage, and I also need to get some back-up solution in place. Looking for speedy i/o, I would like to connect via the ethernet port (if only eSata was included in the iMac, eh!)
I've been planning to get a Drobo, but looking around the forums I see that people say it's too slow for using as a working drive to keep all my source footage, so I've been looking at the G-tech 4 Tb, as it says it is designed for media-content production. Does anyone know if I could use two of the drives for working from and two as back up? Or would it be better to keep back-up entirely seperate, and get a Drobo for that for the G-tech to back up to?
But I am also wondering whether a Mac Mini could be a worthwhile addition to this set up? I find myself sitting around waiting for rendering to complete on clips in my timeline (not to mention exporting to Quicktime conversion!), and I wondered if I put a Mac mini with Xserve installed (Apple store offers this with two 500gb hard drives inside), maybe I could farm the rendering out to the mini while I get on with editing on my iMac? That would require two installations of FCP, which I thought was allowed, but just today in a forum I saw that one would have to be a laptop... anyone have any suggestions for getting rendering done without stopping FCP from doing other things simultaneously?
Also I don't know if that arrangement is even feasible... I see all these things like Xsan and Artbox... as a one workstation editing suite, does FCP handle all the dataflows for external working drive and external back ups okay without having to introduce more controllers?
And can anyone explain to me how I could set up an ethernet connection to an external hard drive, or does that require the extra controllers mentioned above? I've seen it said that you can do it via ethernet, but haven't seen how you can actually go about doing it.

as NLEdit said, there will be loads of answers to this.
IMO i'd avoid drobo like the plague. G tech drives have served me incredibly well working on a huge variety of broadcast projects (just over the water from you in Bristol), I've had no probs with FW800 when using DVCproHD, pro res is ok, sometimes a little slow with multiple layers and of course it eats up storage space. so I'd go for 2 4tb drives, keep the backup one in a different location.
one tip that has saved me countless times is to format them as follows:-
mac os extended (not journalled)
create 2 partitions
partition 1 - make this small (1gig) and call it "drive a - do not use"
partition 2 - the rest of available storage and call "drive a"
this is because the boot sector of the drive is within the first partition and with this method if it goes down it can be re erased without losing all your footage.
If you call your backup drive the exact same name and have the exact same folder structure, you will not have to relink if you get a problem.
Ignore getting a mac mini for rendering, won't help at all in FCP. instead I would make every attempt you can at buying a mac pro rather than an imac. much more expansion/speed possibilities and a more robust solution.
