Using External Software Instruments

How do I assign an external software instrument to a track in Logic?  Thank you.

Create a Software Instrument track.. and then left click and hold on the Software Instrument (SI) button.. (The one just above the I/O label in the Track Inspector on the Left hand side of Logic's Layout.)
You will find all of Logic's Apple SI's there along with any 3rd party SI's you may have installed too, just below Apple's SI's.

  • Volume Problem when using external midi instruments

Hi everyone, I'm having a problem recording the audio from my external midi instruments into Logic 8.
I have all my external midi instruments set up in my environment and they are all going through a motu micro lite interface, with the audio going through a focusrite saffire pro 40.
The way I record Midi into Logic is to load up a new software instrument-select external instrument-find the relevant synth & input-record the midi that I want & adjust as needed-bounce down to an audio channel.
The problem Im having at the moment and have had for a little while is that when I record this way, the audio that accompanies the midi, although I can hear it loudly through my monitors, the input levels in Logic are really small and when I come to bouncing down and listen back to it, it is a lot quieter than I'd originally heard.
With the Pro 40 comes the Mix Control surface, upon checking this the volume on the master output channels is much more representative of the volume I'm hearing through my monitors, and it isn't the same within Logic. I've checked that I haven't got an output coming through channels on this at the same time as its coming through Logic which would result in the sound being doubled and obviously louder, this definitely doesn't appear to be the case.
Its really puzzling and quite annoying me, If anyone could shed any light on why this may be happening that would be fantastic, I've used this forum a few times and I've always found people to be very kind & helpful.

It was the first thing I was thinking about. Stop the "Software Monitoring" in the Logic Prefs and try again if you do not have any duplicated hardware routings.

  • Can I use Mainstage software instruments in Logic Express 9?

I would like to add more software (MIDI) instruments to Logic Express 9. I understand Mainstage comes with what used to be called Jam Packs. Can I use those Mainstage software instruments in Logic Express 9? If not, where do i find additional software instruments?

    All JamPacks: yes, no problem.
Actual instruments, effects, like Space Designer: no, they are part of the application code (MainStage or Logic Pro)

  • How do I find out which instruments are used by software instrument loops?

This isn't so much a problem, it's just something that's been bugging me - how do I find out which instruments are used by the software instrument loops?
Usually clicking on a track will bring up the instrument name in the track info pane, but if I do this after importing a software instrument loop into my song it doesn't show anything. Any ideas?
PS I have used the search function so I apologise in advance if there's an obvious answer.

in track info, under details, the instrument being used is displayed in the generator popUp menu

  • Using the Software Instruments

Okay, having trouble trying out any of the software synths in Logic
Was following Logic Pro 7 Tutorial Book on P. 68 in creating
Audio Objects manually, but got lost after I created a New Audio Object and
how to click a Channel Entry in Obj Parameter Box?
I simply want to try out the software synths (don't have a MIDI keyboard yet)
I know how to activate Caps Lock to basically control synths
Just missing the simples steps about activating the ES1 synth or
    any of the other synths
    thanks

Choose an Instrument track, assign an instrument to it, push the caps lock and play.
If needed, place the track in record mode.

  • Problem with Software Instrument.

I'm having a problem with an external software instrument (Arturia Analog Factory). When I use it alone, it's sounds great and works fine, but when I assign it to a track in Logic, some of the pre-sets don't work. Basically, I can select about 90% of the pre-sets and play, record, etc. just fine. With some, though, they just make a clicking sound, and prevent Logic from producing any sound at all.
Anyone heard of this issue? Thank in advance...

Have you tried asking this (or looking for the same questions) on the Arturia support forum?

  • What is the easiest way to mix and match drum samples from Logic software instruments

I have been using Logic software instruments (EXS 24 drums kits) for a while. I know how to edit indiviual zones in a drum kit but I would like to know how to copy and paste multiple zones all at once from one kit to another so that I can create a hybrid ESX24 drum kit with my favorite snares, kicks, toms etc. Is there a good tutorial video showing how to do this?

so that I can create a hybrid ESX24 drum kit with my favorite snares, kicks, toms etc.
To my opinion the Environment "Mapped Instrument" object is designed exactly for what you want. You can load even different Software (drum) Instrument kits into say EXS, Addictive Drums, UB etc. Patch multiple cables to each Software Drum Instrument instance, open the Mapped Instrument and assign the pads "cable" outputs in the Cable column - this is one of the most elegant ways in Logic...

  • How can I record a microphone and software instrument at the same time in Garageband 10.0.1?  It seems I can record one or the other, but not both at the same time?

I am trying to record a vocal mic and a keyboard (using a software instrument) at the same time using Garageband 10.0.1.  It seems that I can't record the mic input and the software instrument at the same time.  I can record the mic input by itself, and I can record the software instrument by itself (if I don't have a mic input track created), but I can't record them together.
It seems like this should be an obvious thing to be able to do, but I can't figure out how to make it work.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

you need to "record enable" both tracks:

  • Why can't I use the software acoustic guitar in drop-D tuning?

While using the software instrument acoustic guitar, all notes at D1 and below play a chord-like sound.  Everything above D1 sounds normal.  I can't imagine this is by design, considering drop-D is a common tuning. Is this a known defect, or have I got something configured wrong?

Here's the solution (just in case someone else stumbles across this same problem and actually finds my question).
I'm an absolute beginner, so I'll describe this at a high level since I don't know all the correct terminology.
Open the ESX24 sampler on the Acoustic Guitar track.  The selected instrument will be "Acoustic Guitar".  Make a copy of that and rename it to Drop-D Acoustic Guitar.  Bring up the instrument editor (the edit button).
Oddly, from the keyboard, D1 plays fine.  But in my song, D1 is triggering two samples.  When I play the note from the score (by clicking on the note), the instrument editor highlights to two samples, Zone #1271 and Zone #1399.  1399 is a chord and it is played in the range C1 to D1.  I'm not sure how the ESX24 determines when to play each sample, since pressing D1 on the keyboard of the instrument editor only highlights 1271, but I don't really care.  I changed the entry in the 1399 row to set the Key Range Hi to be C#1, so that it won't play on D1.  There may have been another sample I had to do this to, but I can't seem to find it.  In any case, you get the idea.  Save the instrument, and now you can reliably play a drop-D guitar.
I hope that description was good enough to put you on the right track.

  • Multiple controllers and AU plugins (or software instruments)

    Hello,
This is my situation: 4 students and 4 (electronic) pianos (that can send on different channels).
I also use Logic Pro 9.
    Midi interface with 4 ports
I want these 4 students play together performing something like an orchestral score, ie piano 1(or controller 1) plays strings, piano 2 (controller 2) wood, piano 3 (...) brass and piano 4 (...) something like percussion.
Because I'm a classical piano teacher, I want those piano's sounds really like a flute or trumpet or... For that reason I have installed AU-plugin from Garritan and don't use GM instruments.. These Garritan instruments are also used in the notation programs Sibelius and Finale.
I ask this because of the following problem:
If you make a file of 4 tracks using these software instruments and you link each separate track to a midichannel (and make it record affordable) all the 4 tracks sound no matter if you play 1 piano or controller or 2 pianos or 3 or.... I want each controller gives only 1 sound, or, one controller for one midichannel and not that one controller gives (in my case) 4 sounds. To reach this, do I really have to program Logic environment and if so, is there somebody who wants to explain or to help me with this?
    Thanks a lot,
    PeKes

    Hi
You seem to have missed 1 important step (or two):
    Settings:Recording (MIDI)
Check the "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording".
Make sure that you have assigned the 4 tracks to different MIDI channels in the Inspector Track Parameter box.

  • Software Instrument - Guitar

Hello, I got Logic pro 9 and grageband on both my mac and ipad but I was wondering if there's a way I can create the sound of hitting acustic guitar with your hand by using the software instrument. (You know how people use that sounds to kindda make a tempo)?
    Thank you very much!

  • Live Recording with mics and Software Instruments

Has anyone used the Software Instruments in GB to play live, while recording the Software Instruments direct and live (Real Instruments) as well?
I'm thinking about getting a FirePod or similar, to record my band live using several mics and playing and recording Software Instruments all at once. I'm concerned that this set up might have too much latency and make the Software Instruments not playable with my band live, and perhaps all this might make my iMac G5 bog down.
Anyone have any experiences with any or all of this kind of use of GarageBand with an audio/MIDI interface?
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Hang,
Sorry if I'm talking in circles. That post was early!
I'd like to be able to use the built-in Software Instruments live and record that MIDI as well as the live tracks at the same time. However, I could deal with using my own keyboards for the live sounds and just record the MIDI from them while recording the live tracks too, if that makes the system work. For instance, if the part I wanted was a piano, and the Software Instrument piano used too much processor power, I could "record" with a smaller instrument that wasn't such a hog. Then, in mixing, I'd use the Software Instrument I wanted for the keyboard part. Live, my real keyboard could provide the piano for all to hear.
    Am I making sense yet?
I suppose one thing I could do is something I was thinking of doing already. I could get one of the $40 MIDI-to-USB interfaces to record with the band. Right now, I'm just using a stereo mic set up to record stereo into GB. I could add MIDI and see what happens. Heck, I could enable 6 more real instrument tracks at the same time and see what happens! Then I would know it was possible on the iMac at least.

  • What software instruments duplicate  Intentional Heartache

What software instruments duplicate/replicate the instruments used on Dwight Yoakam's "Intentional Heartache"? I would appreciate it if you could point me at the software instruments able to replicate any of the sounds in that wonderful song. The first three would be great, but I would appreciate any of it.
If you google on Dwight Yoakam Blame The Vain you will quickly reach a music video on Intentional Heartache. This is Yoakam's own web site.
I will get you the URL if you want it. If I go to Safari right now to get it, I will probably lose this post. Should have gotten the URL first.
LuckyMan (will imitate Hang Time as sincere flattery) B-)>

Are you talking about the guitar? Sounds like a Telecaster through a Fender Twin Tweed amp. Getting that sound via Software Instruments will be tough. JamPack 3 contains a Software Instrument called "Twangy Electric", but not sure how close that gets.
Try using the Software Instrument "Clean Electric" and add amp simulation "American Clean". Then try tweaking the settings until you get close enough. Alot of that "sound" in Intentional Heartache is guitar technique and is difficult to do, and especially difficult to emulate.

  • Using software instruments that are stored on an external drive.

I recently bought Logic 9. Doing a custom install, I stored the instrument library on an external disk thinking it would be easy to use the instruments at a later time. Now, however, when I create a software instrument track, I only see the basic exs instruments. I can't find any further help on how to use my full library of instruments stored on my external drive. This must be simple, but I can't figure out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Logic looks at the Garageband library for these.
You'll need to go in there and create an alias to where you've put your content, otherwise they won't show up in the Garageband instruments section.

  • Using real instruments to control software instruments

I recently bought the Apogee Duet to play my guitars and keyboard directly into Garageband (and soon Logic Studio). My problem is that I haven't been able to figure out how to control software instruments using real instruments. For example, is there way for me to connect my Piano Keyboard through Duet into my computer, but use it to play software tracks like strings and horns, etc? I would like to do this without using MIDI, since I just spent $500 on the Duet. Is this possible, or is the only way to control software instruments through an external instrument by using MIDI? Thanks so much for any help....

Assuming your keyboard requires an external MIDI interface (some have MIDI interfaces onboard), you can pick one up pretty cheaply - for example, M-Audio's Midisport or Uno are decent and inexpensive.
