Using external storage for purchased movies

Hello Apple TV users. I was about to pull the trigger and buy Apple TV, but I'm not clear on something.
If I use Apple TV to purchase HD movies from the iTunes Store (I'm guessing they come in at +/-6GB each, is the only storage option for these movies the Apple TV's internal storage? 40GB is nothing. 160GB is not much.
I understand using Apple TV storage as a cache for rentals, but for movies that I buy, I'd like to be able to keep things on a 500GB or 1TB drive (which I already use for iTunes storage anyway.
There's a USB port on the Apple TV, but I read in another post that this is a service port that only Apple can access...
Any guidance much appreciated.

Currently you can only rent HD movies from iTunes, you can't purchase to keep, so unless you want to download several HD movies with a view to a very intensive bout of film viewing it's probably not an issue, though it may affect the amount of synced content on your AppleTv.

Correct - service port only - no reason it couldn't be enabled in a future software update but unlikely in my opinion. Would love to be proved wrong on this!
Personally, I think the trend will be towards centralised home media servers, and networked 'thin' clients for display with small amounts of onboard storage. I would love an "AppleTV Air" type device with solid state storage - should run cooler, use less power, and be less prone to hardware failure without a mechanical drive.
Even in it's current form I could see me using Apple TVs for years to come but the hard drives will eventually fail - a solid state drive AppleTv would have more longevity.
If they enabled USB to allow attaching external storage that would be the icing on the cake (more codecs, faster processor, and higher bitrate playback would be the lit candles!).

• Advice on 2TB external storage for 1080 DVCPRO HD footage

I'm trying to find the best external storage for editing on a 17" Macbook Pro.
I'll be working on a feature shot with the HVX-200 at 1080i/24pa. I'm figuring we'll need approximately 2TB of storage.
Are FW800 drives fast enough to edit 1080?
Is it possible to run a 2TB SATA raid off the ExpressCard?
And as a side question, is the Macbook Pro fast enough to handle 1080? (we haven't purchased the system yet). It sounds to me like it will be, but wanted to see if anyone had any real world experience with it.
To be honest, I know just enough about the brave new world of the HVX-200 to get myself in trouble, so bear with me.
Any advice on the drives, and even good vendors to get them from, is much appreciated.

Why are you shooting 1080? This camera does best at
720p. And in fact, the files sizes will be very
small at 720p24...just 22GB/hour. And since the
chips are really ideal for 720p...I see no gain in
shooting 1080i.
But that is me.
I just finished a show that was a mix of Varicam and
HVX and I edited 720p, and output to 1080p, and it
looked great. Airing on TV this Friday. Sadly, in

That's a good question. lol.
The director wants 1080 because there's potentially going to be a 35mm blowup at the end of all this. Depending on who you ask, I've heard 720 may lose anywhere from 10-30% resolution on blowup compared to 1080.
Though it's been a back and forth decision. He's not 100% sold on 1080 (especially because we're finding few people have done it with the HVX-200) and 720 sure makes the workflow much easier.
That's been a question we've been unable to find a good answer to, is shooting 1080i really that much better (to justify all the extra work in the process) than just shooting 720/24pn and doing an upres at the end?
how exactly are the chips ideal for 720p?
By the way, I've been reading your blog. It's one of the best sources I've found out on the net for this stuff... Keep up the good work.

You will not want to do that and you should just have two 5GB free accounts.
Too much risk of merging or losing data.

Settings-icloud-scroll to the bottom, select delete, if you want to keep the content select keep, otherwise it'll remove it. Then once it is done add the account information for the account you want on that phone.  Your apple ID in settings-store will remain the same and each device can still purchase/use content from that account.

i used debit card for purchasing i dont have credit card now its showing your payment method is decline use another payment method what should i do i dont have credit card or any another account

I don't think that debit cards are still accepted as a valid payment method - they are not listed on this page and there have been a number of posts recently about them being declined. You could try contacting iTunes support and see if they can help, but I don't think you will be able to use a debit card : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
Are iTunes gift cards available in your country ? They are not available in all, and they are country-specific (they can only be used in their country of issue), but if there you could possibly use them as your payment method.

• Use external drive for Time Capsule backups AND file storage?

I have an external drive formatted by my MBP.  I'm using it to store my iTunes music library and iPhoto pics.  Can I use the drive for Time Capsule backups as well?

Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine

• Can Front Row use external HDs for Movies?

Hey, I download and store podcasts, vidcasts, and movies on my external USB/firewire HD and I was wondering if Front Row could play them off of there. From what I've read, Front Row accesses movie files from ~/Movies but not elsewhere. Could I perhaps add an alias to the folder with my other movies to trick Front Row into playing them?

No no no...you don't need iTunes, but yes, you can do it. I just posted this in another thread so here it is again...this is how I do it. For short, I put an alias of the folder on the external drive (or just a separate partition on internal HD) into my Movies folder, and it works! Here you go, from http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1837976#1837976:
All you have to do is make an alias of the folder your videos are in and put it in your Movies folder in your Home folder. To do this, click and drag the folder on your external drive where your videos are stored. Hold down Command and Option, then drop the folder in your Movies folder, noting the little arrow indicating you are making an alias.
The same can be done with your iTunes setup if you're clever. Move your iTunes folder out of your Music folder in your Home folder and onto your external drive, then put all your music files inside the iTunes folder in iTunes Music. Then make an alias of your iTunes folder back into your Music folder in your Home folder. Aliases can also be made by selecting a file and choosing Make Alias from the File menu in the Finder.
I have used this setup for awhile, even over a network for a period. Works great. Good luck.
• What Is iCloud Storage For? Movies? Photos?

I want a way to save my photos, files and movies so that I can remove them from my hard drive. I use Time Machine with an external hard drive, but since this constantly overwrites old files, I am concerned that I will inadvertently lose these. I used to back these items up on DVDs, but with iTunes 11, I can't do this. I understand that iCloud syncronizes my contacts, photo stream, calendar, and so on with all of my connected devices. But what is the additional storage for if I cannot place my movies, pictures, and so forth there?
I have used Apple products for quite a long time, but I have to say that I am baffled by all of this. Does iTunes automatically keep my purchased songs and movies, which would allow me to remove those I don't use on a regular basis from my computer? If not, can these be stored in iCloud?
Sorry for the convoluted question, but I cannot figure this out, and I am feeling dumber by the minute!

I said that DropBox offers 2GB free, please show me where that is in error?
All of the services allow you to earn more, only DropBox makes you start at such a low level.
I have never recomended iCloud as an online storage solution, check your facts before posting.
I never said you did - I said "online services". Read more carefully if you're gonna get narked!
We were discussing Online Storage.

Nope, still wrong. A complaint was made to the FTC by a security researcher for alleged misleading claims, but it has never been investigated by the FTC and none of the researchers claims upheld. To re-use part of your reply to me: "check your facts before posting". ;-)
After the investigation DropBox had to change their claims to show that Employees were able to see your files, (unlike the previous claim that they could not)
DropBox has suffered from numerous breaces of security, 2011, 2012, 2013 and earlier, you can use what you choose, and you can continue to choose to gnore the breaches, it's no issue for me. Read these:

• Change default location for purchased movies ONLY in itunes

I need to know if there is a way to have purchased movies and TV shows strictly download to an external hard drive or do you have to move the entire itunes directory. This is for a client and they do not want to have to move each movie or TV show manually to the external drive and then re-import (understandable).

I haven't tried this but may do so soon. How about setting up symbolic links?
Close iTunes. Use Finder to make an iTunes director on the external drive. Let's say the drive is called "storage" and your music is in your home directory. In your main iTunes Music folder, move (not copy) the "Movies" and "TV Shows" folders to the external drive. In Teminal, create two symbolic links:
$ ln -s /volumes/storage/iTunes/Movies "~/Music/iTunes Music/Movies"
$ ln -s "/volumes/storage/iTunes/TV Shows" "~/Music/iTunes Music/TV Shows"
You may want to test this first on one of your CD are artist folders before moving a large directory. If the pathname has a space characters, you need to put quotes around the full path. The ~ refers to your home directory.
To anyone, please correct me if the path syntax is wrong for Mac OS X.
Hope this helps,
Steven

• How to use External Drive for Users Directory

I just did a clean install on my Mac Mini - I have over 4 TB of storage attached, but the main drive (160 GB) keeps filling up. What is the best way to have the Users directory located on an external drive?
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Think about it for a second. What would happen if that external drive wasn't connected for some reason? Maybe it died the night before, as external drives have a habit of doing. How are you going to log into the system?
If the main drive is filling up, it says that you aren't making effective use of the attached storage. There's nothing saying you have to keep video files in the Movies folder, and music in the Music folder, etc. Find some things, that aren't your user profile, and move them to your external storage. Or consider putting in a larger internal drive.

• What is best way to manage external storage for 160 GB Tiger iMac

Unfortunately I bought my 160 GB G5 a month before the Intel iMacs came out. I never thought the teens would take to movie making the way they have. I am constantly at 150 GB plus and have filled a 300 GB Maxtor external with a whole system backup image and then a whole boatload of iMovie files. I have purchased a new 500 GB WD, but is still unopened. I have also purchased but not installed Leopard. What is the recommended way to manage the external storage of all of my video - they want to make more movies! Would Time Machine work by keeping movies on for a couple of weeks and then deleting so I would have access through that interface? Help, I can't afford a newer iMac yet.

If they make movies, you will eat space. Be grateful, because if they get real good, they will be able to buy you a room full of storage. LOL.
Seriously, you do have a problem. Even though you could exchange the internal for a much larger drive, they will keep filling them. Film real estate is large. Just keep daisy chaining till you reach your tolerance limit, and if they want too make a movie after that, burn any you must delete to DVD, and then erase it.
Of course, remember, any file that is not at least 2 copies is at risk. You may want to burn some of those to DVd as backups, anyway. DVD's are very cheap.

• Can you get external storage for iPad?

Is it possibly to purchase an external storage device that can be connected to iPad through the lightening plug?

While the iPad can read from a few USB sticks to import photos and videos, it cannot write out to it, or even access anything other than the photos and videos.
You cannot play directly from it, and they must be in a very specific format.
There are wireless alternatives which allow you to store movies and photos and other files in an external drive that can be accessed wirelesssly using a proprietary App. You can then play the videos and look at the photos directly on the App.
