Using Extreme as a wireless card

I have a G4 Dual 800 with no Airport card. I also have a UFO Airport Extreme Basestation.
Can I connect the basestation to the G4 and use it as a wireless card to connect to my network?
Does that make sense?

You cannot use the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) directly as a replacement wireless adapter, but (if your wireless network is created by another AirPort) you can create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between them. This would allow the AEBS to wirelessly extend the wireless network of the other AirPort AND enable its LAN port to allow the G4 to access the network/Internet.

  • Using Express without a Wireless Card?

I would like to use my Express only to stream music from iTunes on my desktop to my stereo. I do not have a wireless card. I thought I could do this but am unable to configure the Express. It is plugged into my network and has a gree light. My desktop is plugged into the same network. However, the Setup Assistant can not find the Express.
    Any ideas?

I believe your computer must have a wireless card in order to setup an Airport Express base station.
I would recommend either having a friend with wireless in a laptop come over and help you set it up. You might also be able to find a friendly store that might help you out.
The settings in the Airport Express stay when you unplug it.
Edit: Nevermind. I see someone found instructions on using the Airport Administration utility.

  • Possible to use non-AT&T wireless card with iPad??

Thinking of getting an iPad, however I travel frequently and after looking at the outlandish prices for international data plans, I am about ready to give up on the idea. Anyone know if it is possible to use a non-AT&T wireless card with the iPad? I'm guessing there would be a compatibility issue of some sort.

The 3G iPad is not locked to a particular service provider. You can get a local Sim card and data plan in many countries. This article will give you some idea of what's available: http://gigaom.com/2010/05/10/ipad-data-plan-guide/

  • Problems setting up Airport Extreme w/o wireless card

I just got an airport base station to host a dialup connection for an OSX 10.4.2 G4 Quicksilver 867 and a PC running win2k. No wireless cards on any of the machines.
I cant get it setup. using the Setup assistant, it see's the station and gives it a number. Then I get a messege saying "There was an error connecting to the air port base station you selected." regardless if I choose new setup or edit setup. If I click OK, at the bottom of the main screen it says "Reading Configuration". I let it run like that for an hour. I tried the admin tool as well, "cant read configuration" error there.
I think I likely need a wireless card to even access it.
But when I access the airport setup assistant, it says something about I'd "only be able to configure the LAN only. but it ddint help. rebooted computer and airport. i have it connected via ethernet.

Thanks Duane! I was in static IP mode and had to switch to dhcp and then yeah, i used the admin utility. thanks for everything. dialup to earthlink worked and I set my router and all systems to DHCP.
is there a difference between the 10.x.x.x IP range and the normal 192.168.1.x Ip pool? I always used the later in the past but noticed a choice in the airport admin tool.

  • Using the Dell 1505 wireless card in the MP

I just installed the Broadcom 4321 card in my MP and would like to get rid of the "third-party wireless card" card type in the System Profiler and have it say the more accurate description of what it really is. This card was sold as a Dell 1505 card so I imagine this is why it comes up as a "third party card" in the Profiler.
Other than that, it's working great.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Nope. Been there done that. I have both "genuine" Apple and the Broadcom card. Purchasing the "real" Apple card is practically extorsion to get the very same thing as this BCM card. Even FastMac admits to the BCM4321 being what they sell...but at 89 bucks. Didn't want to go that route. 20 bucks new sounds much better to me.
I'll put up with the generic description. Small price to pay.

  • How do I use a Verizon PC Wireless card with my iMAC Intel Core desktop?

Help! Bought a Kyocera KPC650 Wireless PC Card for Verizon wireless internet. Works fine w/ laptop because it has a slot. How do I configure my iMAC desktop to accept this card? Is there an external USB adapter? Or do I have to get one installed internally? Which adapter works with OX 10.4?
I've seen the Quatech U132 online. Will that work? Its $192!! As is the Sewell adapter too. ($209)
Any ideas? I want to get off SBCYahoo DSL and their router because our DSL line is damaged in our complex and no one is fixing it!
    Thanks in advance.

What protocol is Verizon using that is not compatible with the Airport Extreme built into your iMac? I have used Apple's Airport Extreme with a lot of different wireless routers with zero problems as all conform to either 802.11b or 802.11g standard both of which are supported by the built in Airport Extreme.

  • Trouble with internet connection when using extreme to join wireless network

I have an airport extreme that I want to use as an ethernet hub.  I have successfully connected it to my wireless modem, and I have a solid green light; however, when I connected the ethernet to my tv/computer/anything there is no internet connection.  I tried powering down everything in order and rebooting as appropriate modem then router then computer, but still not internet connection.  Any suggestions.

The AirPort Extreme does not provide any routing functions when it is configured to "join a wireless network", so the Ethernet ports are not active in this type of setup. The only thing that really functions is the USB port, which could be used for a remote printer or hard drive.
If you have another Apple "n" wireless router acting as your main base station, you can configure the AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network". The Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup....and the Extreme will provide more wireless coverage in the area where it is located.

  • Using extreme as a wireless for comp to tv

    hi all
I have an apple extreme that i dont need to use anymore as my new modem has wireless and is working fine.
Can i set up the extreme next to the tv (linked w HDMI or USB) to send signal from my laptop so i can watch stuff through it ie ABC iview. (australia)
Does it need to be connected via ethernet cable?
If so, what are the limitations as the extreme then becomes the wireless router (if that is correct) and must be in bridge mode.
    Thanks

Well, you COULD use your extreme as an (expensive) ethernet switch. But, if you already have WiFi, and your AppleTV is connected to it...I'm not sure there really is a need for what you are wanting to do?

  • Using a mac's wireless card as an access point and hiding the SSID

Is it possible to create a wireless network on a mac that my iphone and laptop can connect to, and hide the ssid for the network and add wep protection? I really need to know how to do this.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion forums!
Hiding the SSID doesn't necessarily make your network any more secure, especially if you're only using WEP. From what I understand, the SSID is broadcasted every time a computer makes a connection anyway, so hiding it really doesn't accomplish anything that can't be outsmarted by some simple SSID interception software. You really need to be using WPA2 or at least WPA in order to get a reasonable level of security.
Your Mac can only host with WEP-based security. That's acceptable for small file transfers between Macs on a temporary basis, but if you want to have a home network with some real security, you either need to buy a wireless router with WPA2 or use Ethernet. Ethernet is preferable.

  • I need a wireless option for older Mac desktop is there a good card or adapter  I want to transfer hd video files over the internet.  using a hotspot and wireless card in computer, any recommendations

Is there a good card I can put in the computer, and use with a hotspot?  Any experience with uploading HD video files this way.  DSL hard wired connection is too slow

As for the people on eBay, my only beef with them is that it has turned into a money hungry store instead of an auction place to pick things up inexpensively, like it used to be.
    Agreed.
There is one, in particular, who really puts a dear price on his flashed cards.
Not a friend to the Mac community.
Of course, others see his prices, and say "Well, if he can, then so can I".....
By the way, I have been noticing the same cards, only for PC for around $30-$40, which lead me to believe that those are the ones they are "flashing". Sorry if that's incorrect.
    It's OK.
I watch for the prime cards all the time.
Radeon 9800 Pro and XT PC cards have increased to the $50-$70 range.
Pros used to be $20-$30, XTs $30-$60.
Some guys here in Japan are trying to get $100 for Radeon 9800 Pro cards- vanilla PC versions.
The glut in Mac options has inflated the flashable PC card market dramatically.....
The Mac Edition Pro retailed for $200+.
$100 isn't bad for that card flashed to Mac... the XT gets $20-$50 more.
Try telling a PC guy that a Radeon 9800 is a $100 card..... the old boys laugh!
Adding to this is the recent influx of "new" Mac users, PC modders/users buying cheap, used G4's, and the demand for upgrades has increased as supply decreased.
If you see any rev 5.70 Geforce 7800 GS AGP cards, or any FireGl (Radeon) X800XT (unflashed) cards for less than $130, amazing is all that I have to say.
$30-$40, and I'll take 20 of each- cash!
Hmm, same goes for Geforce 6800 Ultra's......
I am just a little (or a lot) frustrated with Apple and Apple vendors lately. For obvious and not so obvious reasons. Please accept my apologies as I go through this phase.
We all have our days, and our reasons. At least, I know I do......
    Apology warmly accepted!
Count me as frustrated, as well.
The new machines sure look nice, but when I tally up the price of the software that I own, which can't be run on Intel or 10.6x Macs, my room full of G4's look a lot nicer.

  • Airport Extreme Wireless Card will not turn on:

    Hey,
Currently, my AirPort in my Network Preferences disables itself and will not allow me to "Turn AirPort On" as I get a dead response when I click.
This does not happen all the time. Sometimes after booting it up, it will work for a period of time before going back to the old problem.
The icon in the bar shows the wireless outline with no bars (at all) in the pie shaped icon.
    Some system info:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x88)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.38.9)
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available
    I use a Belkin Wireless G+ Router
    http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=184371
    What I have done:
I have tried booting up in Safe Mode.
I have deleted my airport.plist file.
The other laptops in the house, including an older MacBook works without problems so I have a feeling it is to do with this hardware or software issue - but I'm very unsure as to what may be the cause.
I can't find any other help on this problem, so any advice or help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated
-Any other information needed, don't hesitate to ask!
    Thanks,
    Alan.

    Here is one possible fix:
Go System Preferences > Network > Location.
Edit location (whatever name you want).
Click + and then click done.
    Try your browser.
And, here is another possibility that has worked for others (I think referred to by William):
Go Finder > Your HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration.
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to your Desktop.
    Restart.
    Try your browser.
    Try something a little different.
Go Finder > Your HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration.
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to your Desktop.
Go System Preferences > Network > Delete all locations, and use Automatic.
    Restart.
    Try your browser.

  • How can I select which channel the wireless card on the Macbook Pro uses?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro which must be 5-6 years old running OS ver10.5.8 with the following wireless card details..
Wireless Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x86)
      Wireless Card Locale:          Worldwide
      Wireless Card Firmware Version:          1.4.16.2
      Current Wireless Network:          ML MC
      Wireless Channel:          6
.. and a Time Capsule running firmware ver 7.6.1.
We recently installed a faster broadband connection and for some reason the pc’s (recent purchases) we have are regularly getting a 37Gb max download speed and the MacBook Pro is regularly getting only 19Gb max download speed.  All the computers are connecting through the same Time Capsule to the net.  On the Time Capsule the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidths are set so the channel is selected automatically.
Is the max download speed on the MacBook pro slower because of the wireless card in it?  And if so, how can I check?  Could I manually adjust it to a faster setting?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Channels are managed by the router and the automatic settings on your TC is about right - unless you have general WiFi issues.
Your slower speed is down to the older Airport card in your MBP.

  • Netinstall via Wireless Card

I'm trying to put Arch Linux onto my computer's laptop using a Netgear WG511T wireless card for installation.  However, the wireless card is apparently not recognized (even though it should be supported natively), so it fails when I try to use DHCP polling.  Is there any way I can get the netinstall CD to recognize the wireless card?

What output do you get when you type iwconfig? Have you done "ifconfig eth0 up"? (replace eth0 with your interface)

  • Wireless Card info - Is this the latest?

Can upgrading the firmware on your MacBook Pro be updated?
    If so how?
Is this the latest version for the MacBook Pro 15" 2009?
Have there been problems with firmware on the wireless cards?
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.8.0

    If so how?
You wait until Apple decides to release an update...which they have not done yet and may not ever.

  • Wireless card suddenly fails to be detected on dv1000 laptop

    Hi there,
My HP dv1000 worked fine with some Atheros wireless card. This morning the operating system( winxp ) suddenly can't detect it. I googled around but there seems to be nothing really helpful to this problem. Did anybody ever come thru this before?
    Thanks.

atheros? you so crazy. anyways for people with this same problem reading this, I just fixed it and ill go into more detail how so you can do it and not go crazy.
The DV1000 uses the intel pro wireless card. When you reinstall windows, all the other drivers are fairly easy to install but the wireless card wont even show up in the hardware profiles and the wireless button wont even light up until you...
Install the "intel chipset installation utility" drivers from the hp site. it's under the subcategory "operating system - enhancements and QFE's
     http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&os=228&product=435618#N3612
THEN install the "intel proset for intel prowireless drivers" found in the same hp page under "software solutions". Dont confuse this with the wireless drivers themselves, this one says PROSET the other one doesn't and the other one is in the other category for "driver - network". Install the proset.
THEN go to the "driver network" subcategory and download the very first one, intel prowireless drivers and install it.
Realize that itll install, flash up a black DOS screen and dissappear. its supposed to that doesnt mean its broke hah. RESTART and you should be golden, make sure you push the wirless button if its ot already on.
If this doesnt work, then either you didnt follow my steps with attention to detail, or you have to install the broadcom driver last instead of the intel prowireless.
I just did this after a year of windows being reinstalled and the wireless not working. This. Works. Forget all the other threads that dont go into enough detail.
