Using FAT files system with External HDD in SL

is it safe to store files in an external hard drive formatted as FAT? or should i format as HFS+? Is there any possibility that OS X will damage its data?

It depends on the type of file. While loose files generally can be safely stored there, FAT32 drives can't be used to store a bootable copy of Mac OS X, applications, or content such as an iPhoto library.

The other day i started to have my first problems with leopard my computer froze and i couldn't do anything but hold the power button to restart it when i restarted it would not see my usb external hdd i had tunned time machine off untill i get another hdd specifically for it. same thing happened today using a file off the external hdd then computer just froze i can't figure out what the problem is... i have tunned off time machine.. and locked the option but it has managed to turn it's self back on ??? but it had been locked for the last few times as i check it every time i login..
does anyone know a work around for this in leopard as it's going to take a whole day to re-install tiger and all my apps...

Long time ago I have upgraded even older Satellite M70 with SATA HDD (270 GB if Im remembering well) and everything was fine.
In my opinion upgrade with normal SATA HDD should not be problem. It must not be SATA II because it will not work faster.
I cannot say for sure but there must be some compatibility problem.
Lets see if anyone else had more luck with HDD upgrade on Satellite A100.
Have you checked this forum with advanced search option? Maybe you can find some older thread about HDD upgrade on A100.

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD

I am trying to copy a VMWare Fusion virtual machine, 57 GB, from my Macbook Pro's laptop hard drive to an external, eSATA hard drive, which is attached through an ExpressPort adapter. VMWare Fusion is not running and the external drive has lots of room. The disk utility finds no problems with either drive. I have excluded both the external disk and the folder on my laptop hard drive that contains my virtual machine from my Time Machihne backups. At about the 42 GB mark, an error message appears:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Windows1-Snapshot6.vmem" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
After I press OK to remove the dialog, the copy does not continue, and I cannot cancel the copy. I have to force-quit the Finder to make the copy dialog go away before I can attempt the copy again. I've tried rebooting between attempts, still no luck. I have tried a total of 4 times now, exact same result at the exact same place, 42 GB / 57 GB.
    Any ideas?

Still no breakthrough from Apple. They're telling me to terminate the VMWare processes before attempting the copy, but had they actually read my description of the problem first, they would have known that I already tried this. Hopefully they'll continue to investigate.
From a correspondence with Tim, a support representative at Apple:
    Hi Tim,
Thank you for getting back to me, I got your message. Although it is true that at the time I ran the Capture Data program there were some VMWare-related processes running (PID's 105, 106, 107 and 108), this was not the case when the issue occurred earlier. After initially experiencing the problem, this possibility had occurred to me so I took the time to terminate all VMWare processes using the activity monitor before again attempting to copy the files, including the processes mentioned by your engineering department. I documented this in my posting to apple's forum as follows: (quote is from my post of Feb 19, 2008, 1:28pm, to the thread "Unable to copy very large file to eSATA external HDD", relevant section in >bold print<)
Thanks for the suggestions. I have since tried this operation with 3 different drives through two different interface types. Two of the drives are identical - 3.5" 7200 RPM 1TB Western Digital WD10EACS (WD Caviar SE16) in external hard drive enclosures, and the other is a smaller USB2 100GB Western Digital WD1200U0170-001 external drive. I tried the two 1TB drives through eSATA - ExpressPort and also over USB2. I have tried the 100GB drive only over USB2 since that is the only interface on the drive. In all cases the result is the same. All 3 drives are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I know the files work on my laptop's hard drive. They are a VMWare virtual machine that works just fine when I use it every day. >Before attempting the copy, I shut down VMWare and terminated all VMWare processes using the Activity Monitor for good measure.< I have tried the copy operation both through the finder and through the Unix command prompt using the drive's mount point of /Volumes/jfinney-ext-3.
    Any more ideas?
Furthermore, to prove that there were no file locks present on the affected files, I moved them to a different location on my laptop's HDD and renamed them, which would not have been possible if there had been interference from vmware-related processes. So, that's not it.
Your suggested workaround, to compress the files before copying them to the external drive, may serve as a temporary workaround but it is not a solution. This VM will grow over time to the point where even the compressed version is larger than the 42GB maximum, and compressing and uncompressing the files will take me a lot of time for files of this size. Could you please continue to pursue this issue and identify the underlying cause?
    Thank you,
    - Jeremy

  • Macbook Pro won't boot with external HDD plugged

I have a weird problem. My late 2008 Macbook Pro won't start with external HDD plugged either FW or USB... The screen stays white until I unplug it and then the Apple logo is there.
Anyone know any solution for this? Or anyone have the same problem

yeah I had the exact same issue with one of my 750GB externals too. I just left it for a while (about an hour or so) and it was fine..
I believe its so slow because the system is indexing the drive, which can be a very slow process if the drive is big, has a complex folder-hierarchy, and/or is fragmented.
Does the hard-drive appear quite quickly in Finder once OS X has started up? if its slow it may confirm what I've just said.

  • Is there the way to use "Highlight File Format" with Acrobat Reader 9.0 or later?

    hi
Do anyone know the way to use "Highlight File Format" with Acrobat Reader 9.0 later or substitutional way to highlight a PDF file as well as highlight file?
    I want to highlight some words by indicating character's location(from n to m) using Acrobat Reader 6, 7, 8, and 9.
I use highlight xml file to highlight words in Acrobat 6, 7, and 8.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/pdf/pdfs/HighlightFileFormat.pdf
According to this documents, "External Window Handler Plugin" is required to use highlight file.
But I cannot find this plugin in Acrobat Reader 9.
So Acrobat Reader doesn't recognize highlight file.
Well, I know that there is another way to highlight pdf file. It is called "PDF Open Parameters".
However this parameters cannot indicate location of characters but words which is to be searched.
This parameter does not work perfectly to substitute a highlight xml file.
To satisfy what i want to do, the best solution is that Acrobat Reader 9.0 recognizes highlight xml file.
But I think it is impossible because of lack of plugin.
Do anyone know the way to recognize a highlight xml file to 9.0 or another way to highlight some words?
    thanks,
    Asatamax

The feature is disabled by default in reader 9
    (1) Open Adobe Reader
    (2) Click Edit > Preferences > Search, and
    (3) check the box labelled Enable search highlights from external highlight server.
    (response found here: http://support.dtsearch.com/dts0117.htm)
I can't imagine why Adobe choose to disable it. It's a bad joke for us at UNESCO (http://unesdoc.unesco.org)

    Hello Tao,
    The parameter
       icm/HTTP/file_access_<xx>
may help you to access the pictures without any db-access.
The following two links may help you to understand the other possibilities as well.
The threads are covering BSP, but it should be useful for WebDynpro as well.

  • Spanned file system with zip

    Hi
Is there a way of creating a spanned file system with any of the current zip utilities (Native LabView or OpenG etc.)?
Effectively the result should be z01, z02, etc. This format is something that both WinRAR and WinZIP accomplish, so the output would have to be compatible.
The main issue is when compressing a whole directory. Files are rearranged in such a way that the output of all z01, z02 etc. is of the same size (users choice), and I don't quite know how the files are re-arranged in order to achieve that.
    Thanks

OpenG ZIP does not support spanning or stripped datafiles. The

    First, thanks for your reply.
I actually have a zip utility that compresses strings rather than files. I believe that this utility can be used to create this spanning, but the trouble is it only gives the actual compressed body and not the required headers.
I don't know much about how the headers and how to create them (i.e. the crc32, relative path etc.) in a zip file.
Most likely you just have the deflate algorrtihme in that "ZIP" utility. It is the compression algorithme normally used in ZIP but has nothing to do with ZIP itself. ZLIB is the most commonly used Open Source library for the deflate() algorithme and is also used in the OpenG ZIP library to implement the ZIP functionality. The function ZLIB Deflate.vi in OpenG ZIP exposes this functionality directly and does mthe same.

But more importantly, how are the files within a directory arranged so that constant zip files (i.e. z01, z02 etc.) come out.
What I mean by this is the convept that WinRAR uses. So, if you have a directory with mixed file sizes in them, and you choose to have split size of 10MB, the output of each compressed file (i.e. z01, z02 etc.) is always 10MB, appart from the last one of course.
Some help in the headers and the rearrangement of files within a nested direcotry would go a long way.
As for the cmd line, I don't like using that feature with labview because its very heavily limited. It does not give any intermitante control when a job is started. Just to see a simple progress as exe runs we have to jump through hoops, i.e. writting the output to file or clipborad and then reading etc. let alone anything else. and I'm also looking to add alot of other small features along the way, i.e. pausing, cancel, resume progress save, etc. So I definatly cannot take this route.
So ZIP uses deflate() to compress the individucal file streams but the ZIP format is about creating management around it that allows to store multiple such streams into one physical file. It is a little like a filesystem inside a file.
Adding Spanning and striping to OpenG ZIP would be possible and most of it could be done in the LabVIEW part of it, but there would also need to be some modifications to the underlaying shared library to support that. The spanning or striping is done in such a way that filestreams are cut up when necessary and continued in the next data file. The unzipping algorithme has then to be smart enough to recognize that and combine the streams again when uncompressing. For that the compression changes various flags in the header for each stream, which is the part where the shared library would need to be modified to allow those changed values to be writting (and also recognized on decompression). All in all quite a serious project undertaking.
Refusing to use command line tools because they are ugly is not really a smart decision.
Under Unix/Linux it is totally normal to do so and it makes the whole unix system very powerful as you don't need to write huge monotlithic monsters that do everything from making coffee, to cleaning the house and making the laundry but simply make a tool for each task and tie them together through command line chaining. Divide and master is the magic here, not not conquer and swallow!
Also you have here the choice to use a command line tool and be done in 5 minutes, or write a tool like OpenG ZIP that took me probably several man months of work over time. Or wait until me or someone else changes OpenG to support this feature which could be 10 years.
Alternatively you can also try to write a LabVIEW library to use the ZIPArchive shared library from http://www.artpol-software.com/ziparchive/KB/0610051553.aspx. But that is likely going to be a similar effort as writing OpenG ZIP was.

  • Is it possible to build a project with Labview 2010 on a Windows XP system, that is useful for a system with windows 7 on it?

    Hi there,
I am planning to use Labview 2010 in a short time.
But before I'm going to use it I have some questions.
I know it is possible to run Labview 2010 in an XP environment. But is it also possible to, when running Labview 2010 on a XP system, to build a project to a version that is useful in a Windows 7 environment?
Or do I have to run Labview 2010, when I want to build a project that is useful on a Windows 7 system, on a system with Windows 7?
    Please give me some information.
I hope to hear from one of you soon.

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.
