Using fce 4.0.4 with a Canon SX1 IS

How easy is it to use the Canon SX1 IS with my version if fce? I'm pretty comfortable using fce with DV and mini DV source material though directly from the camera and/or digitized files. Thanks.

The media from this camera is not directly supported in FCE. You'll need to convert it to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this.

  • Using FCE with 7500 iMovie DV Stream files: best approaches?

I have about 50 hours of irreplaceable DV footage, of the first 5+ years of my children's lives. I saved all this footage to hard disk over these past 5 years using whatever the latest version of iMovie was at the time, so I have around 7500 DV stream clips created in iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD. There has been no editing, no titles, no transitions. Just 50 untouched iMovie projects sitting for years on several FireWire disks.
First question: Which format of digital video is currently more universally compatible and accessible by software: DV Stream (like iMovie uses) or DV-NTSC (like FCE uses)? I'd like my unedited video to be stored in a format that has a decent chance of being around for a while. (Which format is the Betamax, and which is VHS?)
Anyway, the time has finally come to start editing this monumental volume of material. I want to leave iMovie, and learn to use FCE because iMovie is still buggy, FCE is more powerful, and -- here are the key words -- because FCE has 'RT Extreme" and "seamless iMovie import."
The challenge, and the reason I need your advice, is now how to bring these 7500 iMovie DV stream files into FCE, in such a way so RT Extreme really works when editing these clips and the transition to FCE is really "seamless." Seamlessness is not the feeling I get when I've read several threads in this forum that address sticky problems arising when trying to work on iMovie projects using FCE.
My hope was I could avoid such problems by somehow "importing" each iMovie DV stream clip into FCE and "converting" them to FCE's DV-NTSC format. Then my intention was to save the new DV-NTSC clips to disk and delete the iMovie clips, so I could then work entirely in FCE without any difficulty. IMO, this would be "seamless." As I'm reading through this forum I'm getting the sinking feeling that this is not possible.
So, QUESTION 2: How best to proceed, when I have 50 iMovie projects, saved using iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD, with around a total of 7500 DV Stream clips, so as to avoid glitches and delays in the transition, and to preserve features of FCE such as RT Extreme?
If there are no good options, I suppose one possibility is to re-capture all the video from the original camcorder tapes again, using FCE instead of iMovie. This would be worthwhile especially if the answer to my first question is DV-NTSC. What do you think?
Besides having to spend 50 hours re-capturing all the video I have on tape, there are other potential difficulties with this. First off, at least one of my original tapes has been "eaten" by my Canon camcorder when the rewind mechanism failed and I only have the DV stream data for that tape. Maybe I could record the affected clips back to tape, then capture them into FCE? Is this a plausible solution?
Second, these tapes have been sitting around for more than 5 years, without exercising them or doing anything special to keep the data in good shape. What if some of the tapes have drop-outs or other problems? I'd have to go back to my DV Stream data, and I'm back in the same boat.
I would appreciate any advice/feedback you can offer.

    Tom,
Thanks a lot for your valuable reply.
You wrote, "If the project does not import, you'll need to crack open the iMovie project, extract the clips from inside the project folder or package, and import them into FCE."
This may be a basic operation, but as I don't yet have any working knowledge of FCE, how do you import these clips once you've found them in the package? And if you do that, is a copy made of those clips, or does FCE just remember where they are? If copies are made, are they still in DV Stream format or DV-NTSC/QT?
For the clip that's been eaten, can I export that clip (using iMovie) to a new DV tape in my camcorder, then import that DV into FCE? If so, would that material then have clip timecode embedded in the QT file, or not? Is that a bad idea for any reason?
You mentioned some setups with the Canon cameras have been problematic. I have a Canon GL2. I doubt anyone outside of Apple knows yet if it will be a problem with my setup: a PowerMac G5 Quad, with FCE pre-installed. I don't think the Quads have shipped yet.
Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply to these questions.
BTW, have you written a book on FCE HD? I didn't see one on Amazon.

  • Unable to use PE9 with my Canon 5D Mark III

I could use some help please.  When I try to download my new Canon 5D Mark III Raw into PE9 I get an error message telling me that PE is unable to open it because it is the wrong file type.  My new Canon 5D Mark III lists the file type as ST8Axxxx instead of the normal IMG_xxxx that I'm used to.  Can anyone tell me how to use PE9 with my Canon 5D Mark III camera?  Thank you!

    Hi,
The 5D MK III is not supported by PSE 9. It requires ACR 6.7 or 7.1 which will not apply to PSE 9.
    You can either :-
    1) Update to a newer version of elements
    2) Use the Canon software to covert the raw files to TIF files and then import the TIF files
    3) Download and install the free Adobe DNG Converter. Convert the raw files to DNG files and then import the DNG files into elements.
You can obtain latest dng converter from:
    mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh
    windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
    Hope it helps

  • How to get accurate photo printouts using calibrated FlexScan S1932 , Photoshop CS3 and Canon MX925 ? ALL ARE calibrated with i1Pro . WHO SHOULD GOVERN THE PRINTOUT , THE CS3 OR THE PRINTER ?

How to get accurate photo printouts using  FlexScan S1932 screen, Photoshop CS3 and Canon MX925 ? ALL ARE calibrated with i1Pro . WHO SHOULD GOVERN THE PRINTOUT , THE CS3 OR THE PRINTER ?

You need to work with the calibration parameters to get a good match from screen to print. There are no fixed values - basically whatever settings produce a match are the right ones.
First, set the white point - luminance and color - so that screen white is a visual equivalent to paper white. You can be very specific about this, with a viewing booth right next to the display and a particular paper as target. Or you can take a more generalistic approach. That too will usually work well, as long as you keep the aim in sight: screen white = paper white.
Don't trust the white point presets. You will usually have to adjust to compensate for your working environment. Make sure you can adjust both along the blue/yellow Kelvin scale and the green/magenta axis. Any given Kelvin value may well be wrong on the green/magenta axis.
Next set a realistic black point. This is important. Monitor manufacturers throw about completely unrealistic contrast ranges that you will never see on paper. A good glossy inkjet paper will be in the vicinity of 250-300:1, or a black point around 0.4 - 0.5 cd/m² if your white point is at 120. If you have a monitor that goes down to, say, 0.2, which most monitors today will, you're in for an unpleasant surprise.
Leave gamma at 2.2. Gamma is remapped from profile to profile and is "invisible" - the net result is always linear. You just want to stay close to native so that the monitor behaves at its best.
If you have a wide gamut monitor soft proofing in Photoshop can be useful. With a standard gamut monitor it's mostly a waste of time since monitor gamut is the limiting one.
Oh, and let Photoshop manage color. Make sure you have the right paper/ink profile and also make sure you have the right paper selected in the printer driver. This controls the total amount of ink.

Click that arrow and that window should expand to show you this:
Your actual choices in the last menu may read a little differently but that's the pulldown where you choose.

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

I want to use my jetpack 890L as a wireless router to enable wireless printing with a canon laser printer. Is this possible, and does the jetpack support WPS?

I’ve used several wireless printers with a 4510 and 5510 Jetpack and they all print just fine. The MHS890L does not support WPS. The WPS Wikipedia article briefly addresses the reason why you should not use WPS.  If you’re having trouble setting up your printer the manufacturer has a toll free support line to help you. Your Jetpack has the Wi-Fi Password on the bottom, under the battery, and or in the LED display.

never found a so hard issue, I'm used to plug&play hardware...
can anyone help me printing from iPhoto or Photoshop to a Canon Compact Photo Printer CP-330?
I tried with Canon's drivers, with Gimp 5, anything... one time the printer started working, then stopped after the first pass (yellow color)... frustrating...

    Hi there,
If you have had no luck with the Canon or Gutenprint drivers then you may have a printer problem. Have you been able to print from it using your memory card directly connected?
If you think/know the printer is okay then I would look at the cups error log to determine why the spool is failing. This log is located in the Console application.

  • Help! Problems using FCE 2.0.3 after upgrading to OS 10.4.9

I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.9 and now I am getting "dropped frames on capture" error messages. None of the variables have changed (Same computer, camera, tape, external HD, cables) It was working great two days prior to upgrading to 10.4.9 and now I can't capture anything without getting dropped frames. I've tried a different tape, switching the capture disk to my internal HD, switching cables, reinstalling OS 10.4.9 again (this time from direct combo download), rebuilding permissions, trashing FCE preferences. I'm officially STUCK! Any help would be appreciated. Is anyone experiencing the same problems after upgrading to 10.4.9?

Just so we have all the "me too"s in the one thread, I posted about this on Saturday. I said:
I've been using FCE HD (3.0.1) for ages with my current setup and I've never had any capture problems.
This weekend, I tried capturing some anamorphic MiniDV footage for the first time for a few weeks and I repeatedly got the "dropped frames" error. I tried:
    1. another cable
    2. some different anamorphic footage from another tape
    3. trashing the prefs
    4. re-installing FCE HD
    5. de-fragging the HDD
    6. another machine (iBook G4)
I still got the error, even on the other machine.
I tried iMovie and the same camcorder and I had no problems at all so I can workaround by capturing there and importing the project into FCE (and rendering the audio), but a kludge isn't a fix
The only things to have changed since the last time I successfully captured any footage were the software updates OS X 10.4.9 and QT 7.1.5 so I strongly suspect one of those.

  • Why can't I print after upgrading to Mountain Lion with my Canon MF4450?

I've upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion and now I can't print with my Canon MF4450.
I've already downloaded the new updated drivers from Canon's website and installed them.  I've even tried uninstalling the old printer drivers, completely deleting the printer, and re-installing the printer again.
Strange thing is, this doesn't happen with ALL apps.  For example, when I use Preview app to print, it hangs and I have to force close the app.  If I use TextEdit app to print, it hangs as well.  Same thing occurs with Notes app.  There's no error messages, it just freezes and hangs until I force it to quit.  However, after I force the app to quit, I get asked if I want to report the issue to Apple.  Here's the details from that error:

  • What can you do with a Canon T4i? Look at this!

Here is an amazing scene of the Milky Way. It is shot entirely with a Canon T4i and a 10-22mm f3.5-4.5mm Canon lens. The lens was set at 10mm.
This was done by a good friend of mine that I worked with at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for nearly 40 years. His name is Tom Martinez. He was a master of the darkroom not to mention a great photographer.
Since retirement he has devoted his time to astro-photography. He gives lectures and classes on how to do it. He has built over a dozen telescopes of different designs culminating with the 30” at our Powell Observatory near Warrensburg, Missouri.
Tom is published in many star magazines but here is his “Milky Way”.

    EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX APO
    Photoshop CS6, ACR 8.7, Lightroom 5.7

Very nice job.  It's so hard to find dark skies that can show the Milky Way anymore.  I have to drive several hours to find a place with "ok" dark skies (not fantastic... but decent enough to see structure in the Milky Way.)
Even more amazing is that he managed to get three (mostly) cloudless nights in a row.  That's something that hasn't happened for me all year -- not that I'm bitter about it or anything.  ;-)  (The weather in Michigan has _not_ be kind to us astronomers.  Let's just say no parts on our telescopes are in any danger of wearing out due to excessive use.)
I appreciate that he put his exposure info at the end.   Last year I used a 5D II and the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM to take some Milky Way shots at the Great Lakes Star Gaze.  I found I could take exposures up to about 45 seconds with no noticeable elongation of the stars.  At about 1 minute I could see a tiny bit of elongation (stationary tripod... not tracking.)  This year I have a 5D III and am looking forward to using that to do more imaging.
    Thanks for sharing that.

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!
    Heather

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR
