Using FCE as a Teleprompter

Can final cut be used as a Teleprompter, or can anyone recommend something online that I can use?
Regards,
BC

As a teleprompter? Like the things politicians use when giving speeches? FCE is a program used for editing videos. If you mean can it output a long, scrolling title that can then be used as a teleprompter with a separate TV set, then yes, it can. But the program itself is for editing, not helping direct speeches.

  • Help! Problems using FCE 2.0.3 after upgrading to OS 10.4.9

I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.9 and now I am getting "dropped frames on capture" error messages. None of the variables have changed (Same computer, camera, tape, external HD, cables) It was working great two days prior to upgrading to 10.4.9 and now I can't capture anything without getting dropped frames. I've tried a different tape, switching the capture disk to my internal HD, switching cables, reinstalling OS 10.4.9 again (this time from direct combo download), rebuilding permissions, trashing FCE preferences. I'm officially STUCK! Any help would be appreciated. Is anyone experiencing the same problems after upgrading to 10.4.9?

Just so we have all the "me too"s in the one thread, I posted about this on Saturday. I said:
I've been using FCE HD (3.0.1) for ages with my current setup and I've never had any capture problems.
This weekend, I tried capturing some anamorphic MiniDV footage for the first time for a few weeks and I repeatedly got the "dropped frames" error. I tried:
    1. another cable
    2. some different anamorphic footage from another tape
    3. trashing the prefs
    4. re-installing FCE HD
    5. de-fragging the HDD
    6. another machine (iBook G4)
I still got the error, even on the other machine.
I tried iMovie and the same camcorder and I had no problems at all so I can workaround by capturing there and importing the project into FCE (and rendering the audio), but a kludge isn't a fix
The only things to have changed since the last time I successfully captured any footage were the software updates OS X 10.4.9 and QT 7.1.5 so I strongly suspect one of those.

  • Using FCE with 7500 iMovie DV Stream files: best approaches?

I have about 50 hours of irreplaceable DV footage, of the first 5+ years of my children's lives. I saved all this footage to hard disk over these past 5 years using whatever the latest version of iMovie was at the time, so I have around 7500 DV stream clips created in iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD. There has been no editing, no titles, no transitions. Just 50 untouched iMovie projects sitting for years on several FireWire disks.
First question: Which format of digital video is currently more universally compatible and accessible by software: DV Stream (like iMovie uses) or DV-NTSC (like FCE uses)? I'd like my unedited video to be stored in a format that has a decent chance of being around for a while. (Which format is the Betamax, and which is VHS?)
Anyway, the time has finally come to start editing this monumental volume of material. I want to leave iMovie, and learn to use FCE because iMovie is still buggy, FCE is more powerful, and -- here are the key words -- because FCE has 'RT Extreme" and "seamless iMovie import."
The challenge, and the reason I need your advice, is now how to bring these 7500 iMovie DV stream files into FCE, in such a way so RT Extreme really works when editing these clips and the transition to FCE is really "seamless." Seamlessness is not the feeling I get when I've read several threads in this forum that address sticky problems arising when trying to work on iMovie projects using FCE.
My hope was I could avoid such problems by somehow "importing" each iMovie DV stream clip into FCE and "converting" them to FCE's DV-NTSC format. Then my intention was to save the new DV-NTSC clips to disk and delete the iMovie clips, so I could then work entirely in FCE without any difficulty. IMO, this would be "seamless." As I'm reading through this forum I'm getting the sinking feeling that this is not possible.
So, QUESTION 2: How best to proceed, when I have 50 iMovie projects, saved using iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD, with around a total of 7500 DV Stream clips, so as to avoid glitches and delays in the transition, and to preserve features of FCE such as RT Extreme?
If there are no good options, I suppose one possibility is to re-capture all the video from the original camcorder tapes again, using FCE instead of iMovie. This would be worthwhile especially if the answer to my first question is DV-NTSC. What do you think?
Besides having to spend 50 hours re-capturing all the video I have on tape, there are other potential difficulties with this. First off, at least one of my original tapes has been "eaten" by my Canon camcorder when the rewind mechanism failed and I only have the DV stream data for that tape. Maybe I could record the affected clips back to tape, then capture them into FCE? Is this a plausible solution?
Second, these tapes have been sitting around for more than 5 years, without exercising them or doing anything special to keep the data in good shape. What if some of the tapes have drop-outs or other problems? I'd have to go back to my DV Stream data, and I'm back in the same boat.
I would appreciate any advice/feedback you can offer.

    Tom,
Thanks a lot for your valuable reply.
You wrote, "If the project does not import, you'll need to crack open the iMovie project, extract the clips from inside the project folder or package, and import them into FCE."
This may be a basic operation, but as I don't yet have any working knowledge of FCE, how do you import these clips once you've found them in the package? And if you do that, is a copy made of those clips, or does FCE just remember where they are? If copies are made, are they still in DV Stream format or DV-NTSC/QT?
For the clip that's been eaten, can I export that clip (using iMovie) to a new DV tape in my camcorder, then import that DV into FCE? If so, would that material then have clip timecode embedded in the QT file, or not? Is that a bad idea for any reason?
You mentioned some setups with the Canon cameras have been problematic. I have a Canon GL2. I doubt anyone outside of Apple knows yet if it will be a problem with my setup: a PowerMac G5 Quad, with FCE pre-installed. I don't think the Quads have shipped yet.
Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply to these questions.
BTW, have you written a book on FCE HD? I didn't see one on Amazon.

  • How to judge the difficulty of using FCE?

We have recently moved to a macbook pro from pc (and are very happy!).
One thing we used the pc for was editing camcorder footage - my wife became pretty adept at knocking up decent mini-movies from our holiday footage using Ulead's Videostudio.
imovie has slighly disappointed her as she finds it doesn't quite do enough. We are happy to get FCE but fear that the price increase indicates an increase in difficulty that may prove to be a problem. For PCs there seem to be loads of software in the £50-100 bracket (sorry, British) but just a big gap for macs.
I realise this is a very difficult question to ask on a forum as it depends so much on perceptions of difficulty. However, would reasonable comfort and ability on something like videostudio indicate anything about the relative ease of using FCE?
    Thanks in advance...

.. I'm more the iMovie guy (you'll usually meet me at the iM boards...), but I'm using both, iM since v2 ... and FCE 3.5 for a while..
As a hobbyist, my stakes are low on final product, my recordings are mostly 'a day at the zoo' ... stuff like that.
My biggest project was last year a StarWars Fanproject, featuring my 7y old son as the very young Anakin .. droids, light sabres, spaceships.. I needed FCE as 'special effects machine', needed multi-layer (video for compositing, audio for zillions of sound effects..).-
FCE is VERY different from any consumer app (my ex-father-in-law uses Ulead on his PC...), it is not meant as a 'click preset button done' app... It asks for a deep understanding in movie making & technology; it asks for skills to transfer 'imagination' into 'clicks, sets and numbers'
For me, movie making is 99% cuts and a disolve; I don't even use the new 'themes' in iM .. looking good, but doesn't 'fit' to the '(non)style' of my projects.. so, iM fullfills my needs mostly .. .
.. but, to be honest: I will re-edit the whole SWproject.. 'cause it's fun to play 'Big Boy' using FCE... after a year of usage, I start to realize HOW to work with it. I actually work thru a Tom Wolsky book, which was in my shelf unread for more than a year.. Tom has a wonderful way of discribing and 'illustrating' things & issues .. ok, there's a slight language barrier, but you as a British should manage that ;))
    summary:
iM is an excellent consumer's tool.
FCE is an even more excellent tool, if you are interesting in movie-making 'as a pro' .

  • Backing up unedited family video: Should I capture using FCE or iMovie?

I have >50 hours of family video (kids) that I'm not ready to edit yet. I would like to capture the footage in order to back it up because it is priceless. My plan is to buy some large hard disks and save video there, and then when Blu-Ray comes out, I'll buy a Blu-Ray drive and burn Blu-Ray disks as an additional layer of safety.
The captured files will need to be in a format that lasts. As far as I can tell, both FCE and iMovie save captured clips as Quicktime files, which I'm guessing will be around for a while and compatible with future video editing apps. Both FCE and iMovie can import Quicktime clips. I'll be importing the entire hour of video from each tape, in a single capture.
    My question is this:
    If...
    (a) rendering doesn't bother me (like importing clips using iMovie then editing using FCE)
    (b) timecode isn't important to me (iMovie doesn't save timecode)
... is there any reason to capture the video using Final Cut instead of iMovie?
The only feature that FCE has that iMovie doesn't, is the ability to detect dropped frames during capture. Are there other reasons?
I like the fact that iMovie splits the capture into individual clips at each break and saves each clip as an individual file. If you're willing to do the work, FCE/FCP can do this to, using DV Start/Stop detect, making the segments into subclips, then exporting them as individual clips. FCP makes this a practical possibility using batch export, whereas FCE lacks that feature and exporting each clip one by one is impractical (I have maybe 200 individual clips per hour of tape). But this is a task I plan for later. Right now my concern is finding the "best way" to capture and save all this video for later editing.
I guess I could also ask, should timecode be important to me? My tapes contain a lot of timecode breaks, so recapturing video from tape automatically isn't likely to work well. I don't know any other reason timecode might be important for consumer-level family video.

    Anthony,
while I fully agree with Al answer, let me add one note in favor of iMovie in answering your original specific question (note: I'm a quite happy user of FCE for all its advantages over iMovie, but for the point I'm going to make).
The basic difference between FCE and iMovie in scene detection (based on the same principle of using date/time breaks as dividers), is that iMovie creates as many media files as clips during capture itself, while FCE Subclips are created AFTER the capture of a unique media file, using DV Start/Stop Detect and Make Subclip, that does NOT splits files.
So you'd better consider now if recovering unused disk space, by trashing unused clips, will be a major issue for you in the future, when you'll be editing your movies. If so, keep in mind that this job is very simple if you captured with iMovie and then imported its clips to FCE (and if you confirm you don't mind about TC and audio rendering), while it is quite complex if you captured directly with FCE, and, I'd say, not recommended unless absolutely needed.

  • Cannot Figure Out How to Use FCE

We bought Final Cut Express, and after many hours fo trying to figure out how to use it, went back to using iMovie 06 HD on our older Macs (the new iMovie 09 does not have the audio features we need to edit and create movies). We were told at the Apple Store that we must pay for classes to learn FCE because it is not intended to be "intuitive" like iMovie 06 HD. We cannot readily go to an Apple Store to sign up for classes; is there another way to learn how to use FCE? I have to say, it is very frustrating.

    that's the usual career
I'm a switcher too, thinking, +hey, I'm the iM wizzard, FCE here I come+, and me idiot started with the usual 2h wedding movie. and failed gloriously
FCE is very different, even a simple dissolve is handled completely different ..
I do recommend to get a book from *Tom Wolsky* (he's an exceptionally gifted teacher) too, take your time, start with a 5min 'trash project' and start from the very beginning.. after some weeks of pain and sweat, you will never miss iM again.. ok, a few effects ..

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • Has anyone used FCE with a Sony hd-fx7 camcorder

As above, has anyone used FCE with a Sony hd-fx7 camcorder. I have recently got one of these at work and am currently using imovie for basic edits, but would like to step up to FCE, has anyone any experience using the two.

  • IMac 8,1 Shuts Down without warning using FCE

Can somebody give me some advice on this?
My iMac 8,1 shuts down without warning it seems that it is when I am using FCE.  Its as if there is a complete power loss, again no warning, just a black screen.  It always starts up when I push the start button on the back of the machine.
This problem has only started since I moved into a new home.
It is plugged into a surge protector.
I am running the latest update of OS10.6
I have an external HD connected by 800 firewire.  This is where the FCE project is saved along with all of the footage.
I have used this configuration for years without a problem.
The problem does not occur when I am using safari or itunes or mail.
The steps I have taken so far are:
    reset the PRAM
    reset the SMC
tried different outlets in the house in case of a wiring problem in the house
removed and reseated both 1GB RAM chips.
tried different configuartions of my external hard drives
If anybody please has any advice or has experienced the same problem please let me know.  Thanks!

  • Morphing images using FCE

    Hello,
Is there anyway besides using the fade-in, fade-out transition that I can morph some pictures using FCE?
If not, how can I accomplish that.......I have about 36 pictures that need morphing into one-another......what will be a good solution?
Thanks for your time and effort,

Questions about morphing in FCE occur periodically.
There is a free program but I don't know how good it is.

  • Using fce 4.0.4 with a Canon SX1 IS

How easy is it to use the Canon SX1 IS with my version if fce? I'm pretty comfortable using fce with DV and mini DV source material though directly from the camera and/or digitized files. Thanks.

The media from this camera is not directly supported in FCE. You'll need to convert it to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this.

  • Using FCE to create a showreel

I'm very new to all this..
I have used i movie in the past to create a showreel.
I now am using FCE 4 and would like to import my old showreel to use as a base to create a new one.
What is the best way to import it so it will be the best quality?
Also I am using mpeg streamclip to convert and import footage of mine that I have on dvd. What setting is best for compression and for frame rate. The footage was shot originally in HD but it isn't a HD DVD.
It will eventually end up on a website, but I would like to create the best quality DVD as well.
    Many thanks

I am using mpeg streamclip to convert and import footage of mine that I have on dvd. What setting is best for compression and for frame rate
Since the DVD footage is standard definition, in MPEG Streamclip, export to QuickTime, then choose the Apple DV/DVCPro compressor. Set the frame rate and other parameters so the resulting file will match your FCE Sequence settings.

  • When i crop a video using FCE, how can i export just the selection?

When using the cropping tool with FCE 4, say i just crop out a single square from near the top of the video. if i were to export this video now, the new video would consist of the cropped out selection surrounded by black. is there anyway i can export the cropped out selection without the black? i'm not looking to rescale the image, just to remove the selection at it's original size without all the black around it.

FCE's a fixed-resolution editor and there's no way to export at the resolution of your cropped image unless it matches one of the sequence presets.  In FCP you could set a custom resolution and export as that.

  • Any Way to Get Tapering, Diagonal Sloping Text Using FCE Alone?

The winning film at our club competition on Thursday had an interesting final credit shot.
The background was a three quarter view of a Roman Temple with a flat "gutter" below the roof gradually converging due to perspective.
One line of credits moved along this, with the writing steadily becoming smaller as it moved towards the left.
The video had been edited in FCE but the maker said this effect had been done in After Effects.
As usual I opened my big mouth and stated that it could have been accomplished using Motion in FCE.
I have since tried it !
I got the lettering to move slightly diagonally across the screen but no way could I get it to taper away. Using the Distort controls in Motion had no effect on the actual lettering.
So!.......... is it impossible using just the software that comes with FCE 3.0 ?
    Ian.

Thanks Tom - unfortunately there's no way of showing it ..............yet !
    Your title is quite different.
I will try to describe it basically.
Imagine a flat plank facing you and stretching across most of the screen. Now imagine the writing appearing and crawling from right to left along the plank. That can be done with the basic Text generator.
However, now imagine that the plank is tilted so that the right side is closer to the viewer. Because of perspective the left side looks smaller and further away.
The writing was crawling from the wider right side to the narrower left and getting smaller so that it appeared to be travelling along the plank.
An easy job in AE using keyframes but I think it is probably beyond the capabilities of FCE or Boris. Unfortunately I didn't think that when I mouthed off to the club !
