Using FCE HD with a 200 gb HDD 4200-rpm drives

I am thinking of getting a 15 inch mac bok pro with the 200 gb hard drive
Is the disc speed of 4200 fast enough to run Final Cut Express HD?
I will get 3 gb of RAM as well with the system.
Thanks
Jerry

Hello Jerry,
while it is true that 7200 rpm drives are recommended with video editing, I have just finished editing a project on a friends G4 1.66 Ghz Powerbook with only 512 MB RAM.
The project consisted of roughly 3 hrs of raw video and was stored on an 60 GB LaCie Pocketdrive (4200 rpm) and editing was done in FCP HD 4.5 and After Efects. The ext. hard drive was powered by the FW bus. We encountered no problems whatsoever, although I have to say that we captured to the internal HDD using BTV Pro, then moved the video files to the external drive.

  • Does someone use FCE together with Sony SR10, SR11 or SR12?

I've tried to get a YES or NO in some discussions here and since I'm not alone with the FCE/AVCHD rendering issue, I'm kind of hoping that someone using Final Cut Express (or any other good Mac software) have got this to work. I've just tried FCE together with my camcorder once in a Mac store and the person working in the store, who showed me the new Macbook Pro didn't know anything about this either. The problem I noticed was that after import of the media from camera everything looked just fine but once I dragged one clip down on the timeline FCE had to render the clip before I could watch the project. This is not news but I wonder what settings one should use in FCE together with the Sony SR12 camcorder. Is there a way to setup the project so that FCE doesn't have to render all the time using full quality AVCHD clips? If it's not possible, is there any other Mac program that will work with AVCHD natively? Maybe the solution is to switch the camera to SD instead? What happens if I do that? If I shoot in highest MPG quality, does FCE handle those clips on the timeline without rendering the clips after every change I do?
My thoughts about this is to get a howto/check-list from someone who know and then visit this Mac store once more with my camera and try it out.

(PC owner who really would like to use the new Macbook Pro)

When you say import, did you mean the Import command in the menus? You don't use Import with AVCHD, you use the Log and Transfer command in the File Menu. That bring up another window which looks for your camera which it calls No Name and thn begins logging in each clip. From there you have to select the clips you want to load into the editor. Each of those clips must then be "rendered" by a HD Apple Intermdiate Codec, which is the rendering you see. Once "rendered" in Final Cut, when you drag them in the timeline, they are ready to go. There is no Mac Program that natively uses AVHCD, but Sony makes a product called Vegas for Windows that edits native AVCHD, though as I understand, it isn't as powerful as Final Cut.

  • Error using Seagate Central with Mavericks as a Time Machine backup drive.

I am trying to use a Seagate Central as a backup drive with Mavericks. After a while, I started getting a sparsebundle in use error. Time Machine does not backup to the drive as it keeps asking me to eject the drive, but I can't see it connected. How do I get the drive to start backing up again?

Thanks for the reply, I had done all of the above but that did not help solve the issue.
I finally deleted the sparsebundle using this: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20120709152257934
After this, I reconnected the Seagate Central Drive to time machine and the wireless backup worked!

  • Using FCE files with FCP?

Hello - does anyone know if I can open FC Express files in FC Pro, and vice versa (with appropriate "save as")? I'm not an experienced user of these programs, but I think I will be soon. My collaborator on a video project uses Final Cut Pro, but I want to be able to make some edits, and can only afford (and probably only need) Express. Will we be able to exchange files in any way?
    iMac G5 2.1 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

In most cases FCE will not open an FCP project, unless the project is very simple. FCP will open an FCE project, if the version is new enough. It depends which versions of FCE and FCP you're working with. Once the FCE project is opened in FCP and updated it will most likely no longer open in FCE.

  • I have a Mac Book Pro with a 320 gig hdd and my drive is corrupted and I can't engage it. So I would like to switch to a 1 terabyte drive can this be done?

I have a Mac Book Pro with a 320hdd, 2.33 processor, 8 gigs of RAM and  OS X 10.9.4 .  My hdd crashed and I cannot access it so is it possible to install a 1 terabyte drive with the operating software already installed and also upgrade my RAM to 16 gigs?

If I were you I'd install a small SSD as the boot drive from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC
Then put a second large conventional drive either in the optical bay (Data Doubler) or in an external.
You don't say which MBP you have: Size, CPU type.
Also when you upgrade you could see if you can salvage your data from your old HD. Can you hear it spin up? If so Data Rescue IV.

  • Has any one come up with a solution to the "the disk was not ejected properly" when using time machine with an iMac and seagate back up drive?

I recently bought an iMac and love it.
Only proplem I have is I keep getting an error message "the disk was not ejected properly"
Everything is backing up fine on my Seagate 2TB external USB drive.
Each time there is access on the seagate and it stops in between needing to back up again I get this message.
    Can anyone help?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • FCE 4 with Panasonic SD5

Hi folks. I thought I'd share my experience so far using FCE 4 with AVCHD material on a Panasonic SD5.
    Getting material into FCE4:
It works. Just plug in the camera, go to "Log and Transfer," and you can select and import any video from the camera. It's also possible to preview and trim the material you want to import, but it's at normal playback--no quick scrubbing while you're still looking at native AVCHD files on the memory card. Importing/ingesting is done through Apple's Intermediate codec, which means transcoding that takes some extra time and a lot of extra drive space.
    Working with material in FCE:
I'm able to work directly--no rendering required--on the material transcoded when shooting in HN and HE (1440x1080) mode. I end up having to do an additional render on imported material taken in HG (1920x1080) mode, though I'm not sure if that's unavoidable or caused by a mistake on my end in the settings.
All in all, I'm happy with the performance, and I'm glad Apple finally got this feature added to FCE so that us AVCHD folks didn't have to keep suffering through iMovie 08 or convoluted codec workarounds.

    Hi dc John,
best regards from Germany. I have had the problem to get the data from my SD5 into my Mac Book Pro for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I saw your hint and everything works. Thanks again.
Now a new challenge is coming up. Everything works as long as I read my data into the Mac from the Card reader. BUT: I also copied the complete content of the SD card onto my hard disk. When I try to get the data into the Mac by log and transfer it does not recognize the .mts files.
Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong.
    Any help appreciated very much.

  • Is the T420s ultrabay compatible with the seagate momentus XT 750gb hard drive?

    Hello,
I have a T420s with a 160gb SSD. last friday i got the BAD_CTX error for the SSD drive and lost all of my data. i called lenovo support (still under warrenty) and they told me the drive was fine. i was shocked! never the less, i found a way to get the drive to work again, but this "fix" will delete all the data on the drive.
i want to use the ultrabay to add a new HDD to backup my SSD on and would like to know if the these three products are compatible.
T420s using the ultrabay with a seagate momentus XT 750gb hard drive?
Thanks in advance for your help...

I'm 99.9% certain that the answer is yes. I have a 500GB HDD in my UltraBay with no problems.

  • Using FCE with a external HDD

I would like to use my new 1.5TB external harddrive as a capture scratch for FCE, i wanted to know if firewire 800 would be fast enough for play back of HD video (1080i), and also, if there is a way to set up FCE to allow me to open and use the program with out the external connected, and just use the internal HDD, i am on the move a lot, and unable to keep the external plugged at all times.
    Thanks.

    Yep.
Keep FCE the application on your system drive along with Project files.
Assign the external as a Scratch Disc through FCE. Format to MAC OS Extended first, very important.
The only thing is because FCE is non-destructive it requires the any Scratch where files are stored to be available. So if you don't have the external connected FCE will just say OFF-Line to everything when you open a Project untill you connect the drive.
FW 800 will be fine for HD that FCE uses.

  • Using FCE with 7500 iMovie DV Stream files: best approaches?

I have about 50 hours of irreplaceable DV footage, of the first 5+ years of my children's lives. I saved all this footage to hard disk over these past 5 years using whatever the latest version of iMovie was at the time, so I have around 7500 DV stream clips created in iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD. There has been no editing, no titles, no transitions. Just 50 untouched iMovie projects sitting for years on several FireWire disks.
First question: Which format of digital video is currently more universally compatible and accessible by software: DV Stream (like iMovie uses) or DV-NTSC (like FCE uses)? I'd like my unedited video to be stored in a format that has a decent chance of being around for a while. (Which format is the Betamax, and which is VHS?)
Anyway, the time has finally come to start editing this monumental volume of material. I want to leave iMovie, and learn to use FCE because iMovie is still buggy, FCE is more powerful, and -- here are the key words -- because FCE has 'RT Extreme" and "seamless iMovie import."
The challenge, and the reason I need your advice, is now how to bring these 7500 iMovie DV stream files into FCE, in such a way so RT Extreme really works when editing these clips and the transition to FCE is really "seamless." Seamlessness is not the feeling I get when I've read several threads in this forum that address sticky problems arising when trying to work on iMovie projects using FCE.
My hope was I could avoid such problems by somehow "importing" each iMovie DV stream clip into FCE and "converting" them to FCE's DV-NTSC format. Then my intention was to save the new DV-NTSC clips to disk and delete the iMovie clips, so I could then work entirely in FCE without any difficulty. IMO, this would be "seamless." As I'm reading through this forum I'm getting the sinking feeling that this is not possible.
So, QUESTION 2: How best to proceed, when I have 50 iMovie projects, saved using iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD, with around a total of 7500 DV Stream clips, so as to avoid glitches and delays in the transition, and to preserve features of FCE such as RT Extreme?
If there are no good options, I suppose one possibility is to re-capture all the video from the original camcorder tapes again, using FCE instead of iMovie. This would be worthwhile especially if the answer to my first question is DV-NTSC. What do you think?
Besides having to spend 50 hours re-capturing all the video I have on tape, there are other potential difficulties with this. First off, at least one of my original tapes has been "eaten" by my Canon camcorder when the rewind mechanism failed and I only have the DV stream data for that tape. Maybe I could record the affected clips back to tape, then capture them into FCE? Is this a plausible solution?
Second, these tapes have been sitting around for more than 5 years, without exercising them or doing anything special to keep the data in good shape. What if some of the tapes have drop-outs or other problems? I'd have to go back to my DV Stream data, and I'm back in the same boat.
I would appreciate any advice/feedback you can offer.

    Tom,
Thanks a lot for your valuable reply.
You wrote, "If the project does not import, you'll need to crack open the iMovie project, extract the clips from inside the project folder or package, and import them into FCE."
This may be a basic operation, but as I don't yet have any working knowledge of FCE, how do you import these clips once you've found them in the package? And if you do that, is a copy made of those clips, or does FCE just remember where they are? If copies are made, are they still in DV Stream format or DV-NTSC/QT?
For the clip that's been eaten, can I export that clip (using iMovie) to a new DV tape in my camcorder, then import that DV into FCE? If so, would that material then have clip timecode embedded in the QT file, or not? Is that a bad idea for any reason?
You mentioned some setups with the Canon cameras have been problematic. I have a Canon GL2. I doubt anyone outside of Apple knows yet if it will be a problem with my setup: a PowerMac G5 Quad, with FCE pre-installed. I don't think the Quads have shipped yet.
Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply to these questions.
BTW, have you written a book on FCE HD? I didn't see one on Amazon.

  • Using two displays with FCE

    Hi
I wanted to see if anyone out there uses two screens when editing with FCE HD. I use a Powerbook g4, and wish to use the laptop screen for viewing editing timeline, maybe soudtrack or live type and a 2nd LCD screen to maybe see the output or toolboxes. For example, if you set up dual display mode in system prefs, and do a powerpoint show, the laptop screen shows something different (such as upcoming slides etc.) to what is output to a projector connected to the DVI port.
Is there something like this on FCE? Thanks
    Abhi
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have now got FCE 3 and answered my own question. For any others who might be interested...if you have FCE and are looking to make use of more than one display, you have two options.
One is to use the OS's inbuilt multi-display options and have the different windows (timeline, viewer, canvas etc.) on different screens, making each one bigger. Or even have livetype open on one and FCE on the other. (Though G4s seem to struggle with this.)
However, a better solution (particularly if you have an HD capable display attached) is to use FCE's Video Out feature (Tools > Video Out). This outputs your canvas in full screen on the second display. It's great to work, and watch a huge full quality version of the final video at the same time.

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.
