Using files created by iMovie

I've just migrated off a Mac, and am using Premiere Elements.
Unfortunately it doesn't appear that elements can open files that were previously imported by iMovie.
I get an error "Codec missing or unavailable"
Quicktime Media inspector says that the .mov file is coded with  "Apple Intermediate Codec"
Unfortunately I have many years of video in this same format.
Does anyone know
a) how I can get Elements to import the files for editing or
b) a tool that could convert them without any loss in quality?
Thanks alot,
Greg

A quick Google search brought up links to Premiere Element user with a similar question to yours.
http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334035-Converting-from-Apple-Intermediate-Codec
I would have gone for export the Apple Intermediate Codec from iMovie in a format supported by Premiere Elements Windows or conversion in MPEG Streamclip (if I recall, this program does batch conversion). I have seen MPEG Streamclip suggested many times for the conversion to the Apple Intermediate Codec, but I am not sure of the conversion from Apple Intermediate Codec to something else using it. Worth a look.

  • How to: Save a movie file created in iMovie on iPhone4 and send it in an email with iPhone4

    Hello everyone.
I just wanted to know if it was possible to save a video/movie file to your iPhone4, that was created in iMovie'11 and then email it using the phone's wifi capability to contacts? I created the film in iMovie'11 and then shared it to iTunes and now i'm stuck. Please help. New at this and we're trying to figure this stuff out.
    Thanks.

I did try that BUT the DVD will NOT play in my dvd player. The large size 'share' option converted the imovie file into a m4v format. TOAST burned it okay but it won't open in the player.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated...

  • Can I work on a a file created on iMovie 10.0.8 back in iMovie'11?

Created a Movie with iMovie 10.0.8, and "saved" my movie and assets.  Can I edit in iMovie 11?

No.  iMovie '11 (actually version 9) cannot read iMovie 10 events and projects.  You could  import into iMovie '11 a shared movie created in imovie 10 then edit that (but with the risk of quality reduction).

  • Cannot update file created with iMovie Mavericks on YouTube. File format is unknown

I have just upgraded to iMovie Mavericks. I created a new movie and I am trying to upload it on YT. The direct upload using the share button in iMovie does not work (file format is not recognised). I then saved the file on the folder movies and tried to upload it on YT in this way, but again the format of the file is unknown and cannot be uploaded/played. Help please!!

Will your videos play in Quicktime 10 (the version in Mavericks)?  If yes, but after automatic conversion I think you can save the converted file and this will most likely be importable into iMovie.
If not there are lots of free and paid conversion apps.  I use the free MediaConverter a lot (http://media-converter.sourceforge.net)
The free app VideoSpec  (http://videospec.free.fr/english/) will show you the detailed format of your videos
Its a matter of trying out various formats until you find one that works - Unfortunately I have not seen a clear list of formats that are supported by iMovie 10.

  • Using photos created in iMovie

I have produced several photos from video footage in iMovie 8 and would like to export them into iPhoto or any other application for attaching to an email. Is this possible please - I have tried dragging, cutting and pasting etc. and seem to have run out of options.

Here is a way that should work for you.
    1) Make sure you have upgraded iMovie to version 7.1
    2) Open a new, blank project, and label it something like "My Stills"
    3) Go to the event that has the footage you want. Place the cursor over the frame you want.
    4) Right-click while your cursor is over the frame you want. Select "Add still frame to project"
    5) The still should now be in the project window. Right click on it and select "Reveal in Finder"
    6) The finder file should be a jpeg. Now you can copy and paste it elsewhere, and add it to iPhoto.

  • Problems using projects created in older versions of iMovie

I have a few projects created in older versions of iMovie, as far back as version 2 as well as more recent versions. Most of those projects are finished and I want to burn them to DVD again, but a couple of them could bear a little touch up editing. These projects are precious movies of our kids and hard to replace. Although I could probably find the original video, I put many hours of work into creating these projects.
In any case, when I open up an old project, I get a warning that goes something like this: "The project was saved with an older version of iMovie. Opening it in this version will cause it to be upgraded, which will make it unreadable by older versions. Are you sure you want to open it?"
I clicked okay, thinking "sure, I don't need to play it in an older version. I have iMovie HD."
However, now when I play my old iMovie project, there are a few problems. For example, one original movie's title was over black. When I play the movie, I get a completely white screen and no title. Also, in another movie, when viewing the movie in full screen, the transitions were replaced by a black screen (although the transitions were there when I viewed the movie in the iMovie window). Basically, there are problems cropping up here and there.
I need to do some more experimenting with all this to more fully understand how many problems there are. I don't know if the projects I opened in iMovie HD are now "broken" since I "upgraded" them with iMovie HD (when prompted to save the project's changes when quitting, I said NO, don't save changes).
I don't know if I should use older versions of iMovie to view and burn to DVD these projects. (I still have iMovie 2 and 3, but not 4 or 5. I don't know if older versions would even work on my Quad G5 with OS 10.4.7.) I also don't know if the older versions of iMovie would work with the current version of iDVD. How can I tell which version of iMovie was originally used for a given project? How can I find iMovie 4 or 5 if I need it?
I also wonder if projects I make with iMovie HD can be opened by future versions of iMovie, or if I should export them as Quicktime or something to be safe.
As I start to look into this further, I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, and experiences that you may be able to offer. I need to get these movies back to their former selves, when they looked good!

(when prompted to save the project's changes when
quitting, I said NO, don't save changes).
Excellent! That should leave you in pretty good shape. More below.
I don't know if I should use older versions of iMovie
to view and burn to DVD these projects. (I still have
    iMovie 2 and 3, but not 4 or 5. I don't know if older
versions would even work on my Quad G5 with OS
    10.4.7.)
The old versions of iMovie will run just fine in today's OSX. (But not iMovie 2 if it was the version that ran in Classic instead of Mac OSX.)
I run versions 2,3,4,5 and 6 today. Problems are minimal.
I also don't know if the older versions of
iMovie would work with the current version of iDVD.
That's not a problem unless your old iMovie projects contain chapters. If you tell iMovie 3 to create a new iDVD project, it might not work. You might not be able to transfer the chapter information to the newer version of iDVD.
(I just tested iMovie 3 to iDVD 6 and everything worked just fine.)
Except for iMovie 2, all old versions of iMovie stored a small QuickTime reference movie in the project folder. If you can't get an old version of iMovie to play nice with iDVD, drag that movie into the iDVD window.
How can I tell which version of iMovie was originally
    used for a given project?
Drop the project file (discussed below) onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock. The version of iMovie that last saved the project is shown in the first few lines of the project file.
iMovie 5 used an entirely different project file format, the pList format. The top of the project file will look like this in TextEdit:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
How can I find iMovie 4 or
    5 if I need it?
    eBay?
I also wonder if projects I make with iMovie HD can
be opened by future versions of iMovie, or if I
should export them as Quicktime or something to be
    safe.
We can never assume any new version of iMovie will be able to understand all features of a older project. It's always smart to make a backup.
There can be problems Apple can't anticipate. There may be third-party software used to create titles, transitions and special effects, plug-ins not installed with the new version or (more often, incompatible). The fonts installed on our Mac may have changed too. There's lots of features that can't be anticipated. I've never had a problem converting projects, but I never use third-party add-ons and special fonts.
As I start to look into this further, I would
appreciate any comments, suggestions, and experiences
that you may be able to offer. I need to get these
movies back to their former selves, when they looked
    good!
My guess is it should be possible to restore the projects back to their original state.
Note that when imovie 5/6 converts an older project, it does NOT create a true iMovie HD project. Instead of creating an iMovie package, it retains the project FOLDER format. It places new iMovie HD elements inside the old project folder instead of converting it to a package.
When converting the project it changes the old project file name to "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project", then creates a NEW project file with the plist format, having the name "Sample Project Name.iMovieProj". (There may NOT be the .iMovieProj extension.) When you save the new project, it adds a new project file "Sample Project Name.~iMovieProj". Note the tilde. The tilde file is a backup of the project file as it was when last saved in iMovie HD.
For our purposes, ignore the iMovie HD project files. We'll use the file ".iMovie2Project" to restore the project. (The extension is the same for all old versions of iMovie, not just iMovie 2.)
    • In the Finder, Duplicate the entire project folder. Work on the copy.
    • Open the project folder in the Finder.
    • Discard the "Cache" folder, the "Shared Movies" folder, the "Audio Waveforms" folder and the two iMovie HD project files. (Some of those items may not yet exist yet because you didn't save the converted project.)
    • Drop the "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project" file onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock to get the version. Close it.
    • Remove the ".iMovie2Project" extension, if you want.
    • Launch that version of iMovie. Drop the "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project" file icon on the iMovie icon in the Dock. With luck, the project should open normally. It's possible any third-party plug-ins used to create the project may not be available. If they aren't available, there might still be problems.
    • Move your unconverted projects to folders that say which version of iMovie created them. To open them in the future, drop the project icon on the appropriate version of iMovie.
If all this fails, there is another way to do the editing you want. That is to import the project.mov file that's inside the converted project folder to a new iMovie HD project. That will deliver the video and audio of the original project as a single clip. Use that to re-edit the project. The name of the movie is "Sample Project Name.mov".
(The movie is a QuickTime reference movie, with no video and audio of its own, just pointers to the files in the Media folder. So long as the Media folder hasn't changed, it can play the original project as last saved.)
Importing the project.mov won't work with iMovie 2 projects, however, for iMovie 2 didn't store a project.mov file in the project folder.
Even if you end up importing the project.mov, you still may want to "unconvert" the project as described above.
Hope I haven't skipped a step. Let me know if you bump your head on something.

  • Using FCE with 7500 iMovie DV Stream files: best approaches?

I have about 50 hours of irreplaceable DV footage, of the first 5+ years of my children's lives. I saved all this footage to hard disk over these past 5 years using whatever the latest version of iMovie was at the time, so I have around 7500 DV stream clips created in iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD. There has been no editing, no titles, no transitions. Just 50 untouched iMovie projects sitting for years on several FireWire disks.
First question: Which format of digital video is currently more universally compatible and accessible by software: DV Stream (like iMovie uses) or DV-NTSC (like FCE uses)? I'd like my unedited video to be stored in a format that has a decent chance of being around for a while. (Which format is the Betamax, and which is VHS?)
Anyway, the time has finally come to start editing this monumental volume of material. I want to leave iMovie, and learn to use FCE because iMovie is still buggy, FCE is more powerful, and -- here are the key words -- because FCE has 'RT Extreme" and "seamless iMovie import."
The challenge, and the reason I need your advice, is now how to bring these 7500 iMovie DV stream files into FCE, in such a way so RT Extreme really works when editing these clips and the transition to FCE is really "seamless." Seamlessness is not the feeling I get when I've read several threads in this forum that address sticky problems arising when trying to work on iMovie projects using FCE.
My hope was I could avoid such problems by somehow "importing" each iMovie DV stream clip into FCE and "converting" them to FCE's DV-NTSC format. Then my intention was to save the new DV-NTSC clips to disk and delete the iMovie clips, so I could then work entirely in FCE without any difficulty. IMO, this would be "seamless." As I'm reading through this forum I'm getting the sinking feeling that this is not possible.
So, QUESTION 2: How best to proceed, when I have 50 iMovie projects, saved using iMovie 2, 3, 4, and HD, with around a total of 7500 DV Stream clips, so as to avoid glitches and delays in the transition, and to preserve features of FCE such as RT Extreme?
If there are no good options, I suppose one possibility is to re-capture all the video from the original camcorder tapes again, using FCE instead of iMovie. This would be worthwhile especially if the answer to my first question is DV-NTSC. What do you think?
Besides having to spend 50 hours re-capturing all the video I have on tape, there are other potential difficulties with this. First off, at least one of my original tapes has been "eaten" by my Canon camcorder when the rewind mechanism failed and I only have the DV stream data for that tape. Maybe I could record the affected clips back to tape, then capture them into FCE? Is this a plausible solution?
Second, these tapes have been sitting around for more than 5 years, without exercising them or doing anything special to keep the data in good shape. What if some of the tapes have drop-outs or other problems? I'd have to go back to my DV Stream data, and I'm back in the same boat.
I would appreciate any advice/feedback you can offer.

    Tom,
Thanks a lot for your valuable reply.
You wrote, "If the project does not import, you'll need to crack open the iMovie project, extract the clips from inside the project folder or package, and import them into FCE."
This may be a basic operation, but as I don't yet have any working knowledge of FCE, how do you import these clips once you've found them in the package? And if you do that, is a copy made of those clips, or does FCE just remember where they are? If copies are made, are they still in DV Stream format or DV-NTSC/QT?
For the clip that's been eaten, can I export that clip (using iMovie) to a new DV tape in my camcorder, then import that DV into FCE? If so, would that material then have clip timecode embedded in the QT file, or not? Is that a bad idea for any reason?
You mentioned some setups with the Canon cameras have been problematic. I have a Canon GL2. I doubt anyone outside of Apple knows yet if it will be a problem with my setup: a PowerMac G5 Quad, with FCE pre-installed. I don't think the Quads have shipped yet.
Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply to these questions.
BTW, have you written a book on FCE HD? I didn't see one on Amazon.

to create standard-conform DVDs = playable on any DVDplayer, there's much more to do than just converting to mpeg(2)...-
you need a DVD-authoring app, as iDVD, Burn, Toast ........... drag any iMovie export into it, 'burn'.

  • Missing files used to create dvd

i recently used imovie and garageband to create a video and music track that i then sent to idvd and burned to a disc. i projected the burned disc while my daughter sang the song live (it came out great by the way - this is my daughter). i was not able to capture the live vocal so afterwards we went back into garageband recorded the vocal and i burned another dvd so she could take it and show her friends. now i cant find what happened to the idvd project or the files in imovie or garageband used to create the dvd. i have three teenage kids and myself using one laptop so my guess is they got deleted somewhere down the line. can i take the burnd disc she has and "restore" the files back to idvd and the other programs to work with them somemore. she has done some other stuff and i would like to just be able to make another dvd of all her projects.

You could try using a free utility called Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php)
Handbrake will read your DVD and output an MP4 video file. There are several options of output file size - choose one that keeps the original DVD 720 x 480 resolution. This file can be merged with the vocal in GarageBand and sent to iDVD.
There is going to be some loss of quality but that is better than nothing.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into

    - Are the codes above is wrong?
    - Or perhaps the DBMS_LOB.LOADBLOBFROMFILE always double the single period on front of the line?

  • Use FTP Transport Protocol (XI) to send text file created from R3

I've configured a Port in IDoc Processing (WE21) to create an output file from a Bank Partner Profile (WE20) where my Message Type is PAYEXT and IDoc Type PEXR2002.
I need to take this Text File and send it to the Bank;s FTP site using the Integration Server (XI).
How can I take this text file and simply send it to the Bank without going through File Content Conversion in order to convert it to XML as the Sender and then uncovert it during the Receiver to FTP the file to the Bank?
If that is not possible, would anyone know how to configure the RecordSet Structure and parameters for both the Sender and Receiver?

    Hi,
    Let me re-phrase your scenario:
ECC is required to send PAYEXT IDOC to XI which needs to be send to the bank in IDOC text file format to the bank. If this is the case we can achieve this by doing the following:
1.Rather than using TRFC port used by the IDOC as the method of communication, you can leverage using file port. The configurations to the file port are simple. You need to select a place where you can drop the IDOC file created by the ECC system and XI would pick up the file.
    2. Poll for the file using NFS from that particular location where ECC drops the file. (If it is being staged on the ECC system, then XI service user SAPservice<SID> must have access permission on that folder like \usr\sap\put\interfaces.
    3. Configure receiver FTP adapter to send the file to the bank.
    Hope this helps.
