Using film contact prints for image catalog, & making frame choices

In addition to importing new digital images and scanned film images to LR, I've started scanning contact sheets to create a key-worded catalog of earlier work for myself and others to easily use. This has been working very well for finding images, but I would like to be able to somehow mark several frames per sheet. Using cropped Virtual Copies is slow and akward. I think others might use LR for like purposes, as well. Is some sort of virtual "white pencil" marker possibe, perhaps in colors?

It might also be useful to integrate with Photoshop's automated Crop and Straighten Photos command. I've tried using that with contact sheets, but the text printed in between photos makes isolation of images very difficult. But some level of automation would be very helpful. Perhaps a four-point system where you click on the four corners of a photo for each frame you want to strip into its own file (or virtual copy).

    When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

    I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
    (contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
    You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
    I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
    I'm used to seeing.
    I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
    image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
    iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
    on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
    viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
    The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I
    think you'd want to pay the small amount requested) and fast. My pictures have never looked so good
    before.

    Can I use Deskjet k109a printer for photo printing?

    Hi,
    Yes, your printer can print photos as mentioned in the following link:
       http://www8.hp.com/in/en/products/printers/product-detail.html?oid=3811379
    Actually any printer can be used for photo printing, the results may not be the same.
    Hope this helps.

  • Advice For Someone Using A Professional Printer For The First Time

    Hello everyone
    1. I'm doing some posters and flyers for my club using Pages. We've got them looking how we want on my home inkjet printer but now we need someone to print out large quantities. I've never used a professional print service before. There are simply loads of posts on this topic but I wonder if there is anyone out there that does this a lot and can tell me how they do it. I was hoping to initiate the definitive Professional Printing FAQ thread.
    2. Reading the numerous posts, there are lots of terms that I don't understand like 'bleeds' and 'pantone'. Understandably, print is a whole new world of technical terms. Can anyone recommend a good introduction to all this on the web?
    Thanks

    I don't know of a good basic FAQ for printing, but I can try to address some of your issues.
    What is a "large quantity", IanB? Tens, hundreds, thousands? In my experience this is probably the most critical issue, since it pretty much determines the printing method used (and thus the cost). Anything under about a thousand copies will these days likely be printed "digitally", which essentially means run off on a colour laser printer. In my experience, as long as you are not fanatical about colour accuracy, this method is very forgiving of the way the source file is set up, and most houses will take standard PDFs. It is much more expensive on a per-unit basis than offset printing, but there is also little/no "set up" cost, which means that for short runs it is often far more affordable in terms of total cost.
    Once you get to big runs, where you need offset printing (presses that use metal plates for different colour inks), things change a fair bit, as you have to deal with colour separations and possibly spot (Pantone) colours as well. The setup costs for this kind of printing can be very substantial (making metal plates is expensive), but once set up, the cost per unit is far less than digital printing. If this is your first time out, I'd suggest either avoiding going this route, or finding a very understanding print shop that is willing to hold your hand through the production process.
    As for bleeds, that refers to when objects on your document go all the way to the edge of a page. The problem with using bleeds is that they require the printer to print the page on a larger physical piece of paper, with the bleeding objects slightly over the desired edge, and then trim that paper down to size, cut so that the bleeding section is cut through (to avoid a white unprinted edge). But because the cutting is not always absolutely accurate, you need to leave space between the edge of the page and any material that absolutely has to be on it (e.g., text), so that the trimming will only cut away some of the bleed, but not the critical material.
    Bleeds make setting up (and printing) your document much more complicated, and you will be much better off if you can avoid bleeds for your first experience doing professional printing. If not, I'd again suggest that you shop around for a print house that says they'll be willing to walk you through the process of how to format your document to do this.
    I'm sure others here that are more experienced in the printing process can point you to more comprehensive resources, or give you more detailed advice.

  • Can I use one contacts database for phone and email?

    I have a gmail contacts list for email.  I also have a phone number database imported from a non-apple cell phone to my iPhone 5c.  I find that I'm using the iphone more and more for both phone and email, but I also use my PC for email.
    I exported my 300+ gmail contacts using google to a CSV file, cleaned it up, and imported it back to my PC.  Of course, it doesn't have the 200+ phone numbers that are in my phone number listing now on my iPhone.
    I like working with spreadsheets because of the many utilities to sort, cut/paste, etc.  If I take my gmail database, ultimately add phone numbers, and sync in iTunes will it be accessed whenever I want to make a call and also when I want to send an email?  I'm hesitant to sync with the new gmail "email only" database for fear of losing all of the many phone numbers in my iPhone. Can I keep my phone numbers temporarily while I edit my master contacts database - maybe by having separate databases on my iPhone for email and phone?  I hope to eventually keep a master PC database of all data on all entries and change/reimport as needed.
    Thanks for letting me know if this will work, or if there are any cautions that I should heed.

    Yes.

  • Contact Prints for printing in a  Photo Lab

    I want to print my contact prints in a photo lab, not in a printer.
    How can I do it? The only way I have found is to save them as PDF, but this is not a good way.
    Regards.
    Guillermo

    Aperture does not export contact sheets in any other format than PDF as far as I know.
    A quick work around would be to export smaller versions to a desktop folder and then create a jpeg contact sheet in an external editor such as Photoshop

  • Using XML as header for Image

    Has anyone used an XML document to describe an image? I have the image already in iFS and then I want to pass in an XML document that describes the image. What path should I take to link the two together, or make them both seen as one object?
    Jason Adkison
    New Mexico Mutual Casualty

    You can use an XML file to supply the attribute values for a Document, or a content type based on the Document class.
    1) First, ensure that the elements in the XML file map to correspondingly named attributes on the content type.
    2) Include in the XML file an <UPDATE RefType="Path"> tag which specifies the full path of the file in the repository.
    3) Import the XML file into the repository with parsing enabled (automatically enabled with SMB)
    Example:
    <?xml version = '1.0' standalone = 'yes'?>
    <DOCUMENT>
    <UPDATE RefType="Path">/home/guest/doc2.txt</UPDATE>
    <NAME>doc2_new.txt</NAME>
    </DOCUMENT>
    Please review the Oracle iFS Application Developer's Guide, Chapter 4 - creating custom classes for a description of how to create custom content types to track extra attributes pertinent to your images.

  • How do I use my Time Capsule for backup without making it my router?

    I've always used my Time Capsule as my internet router (paired with my Time Warner modem) and I've also used it to back up my computer.   I just got a new modem, it was a nightmare to set up, and it's supposed to have very fast internet.  It's a Time Warner modem / router.  In order to set this up and get a new wifi, I had to disconnect my Time Capsule.
    Now I would like to connect my time capsule again to back up my computer, but to avoid messing with the internet or changing it again (I may as well try the new one), I DON'T want to continue using my TC as a router.   how do I go about doing this?  Do I continue to have it connect to the modem via ethernet or do I just plug it into the power source and that's it?
    If someone could walk me through the process it would be so appreciated!

    Hi Alexandra,
    The article linked below details how to go about settings your Time Capsule up as a bridge, which effectively disables all routing functionality (NAT and DHCP services are disabled on the Time Capsule as they will be handled by your ISP's modem/router), and should allow you to utilize Time Machine without affecting your existing network.

  • Relative paths for images upset by forwarding requests

    Hello World.
              I am using a web app deployed in Weblogic 5.1 with service pack 8.
              I have hit a problem which puzzles me. When I forward a request from
              one JSP to another (say from A to B) the web server seems to take the
              URLs of the images on the served file (B) relative to the path on the
              calling file (A). Here's a detailed explanation...
              Suppose I have a the web app structured as follow
              /oddApp/launch/A.jsp
              /oddApp/B.jsp
              /oddApp/images/tick.gif
              Page A simply stores its request URI and forwards its request to page B
              <jsp:forward page="/B.jsp" />
              Page B displays its requestURI, contextPath and servletPath. It also
              attempts
              to show three images
              <img src="images/tick.gif">
              <img src="../images/tick.gif">
              <img src="/images/tick.gif">
              When I invoke page B directly, the first image is shown, the others are not.
              When I invoke page A, it forwards to B and the second image is shown, the
              others are not.
              In each case the URI, contextPath and servletPath are correctly displayed
              with regard to page B.
              URI = [oddApp/B.jsp]
              contextPath = [oddApp]
              servletPath = [B.jsp]
              The URI in A.jsp is also correct (i.e. /oddApp/launch/A.jsp).
              The search for the images seems to be relative to the original URI (i.e. not
              the URI used to forward), which strikes me as daft. It means that page B
              must be aware of where it is being called from. It is perfectly plausible
              that
              relative paths which suit when called from one location are incorrect when
              called from another.
              I had thought that including the leadling slash (as shown as the third
              image)
              would cause the search relative to the document root (/oddApp/), but this
              appears not to be the case. The search is done relative to the root of the
              server not the web app.
              Adding jsp mappings in the deployment descriptor of the web app does not
              help (I had thought it a long shot anyway).
              Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
              PHiL

    i face the same problem (WinNT, WLS6.0): my wep app has a contextRoot " root " which makes it react to the URL: http://host:port/root /: it is this folder which will be used as a basis by the Web server But in the jps I use a relative URL for images: / images/toto.gif : it works very well when I deploy my jsp out of a Web-app by setting a document.root to the weblogic web server.On the other hand, once deployed in a Web-app, images are not found because the default path of the browser is http://host:port, without the context root of the Web-app! In other words, my war has images/*.gif in its root but when /images/toto.gif is resolved in a jsp, as the relative URL is not prefixed by my context-root, the image is not search in the war! actually, if I type http://host:port/root/toto.gif, my image appearsany clues? an alias on the web server? a setting in web.xml/application.xml and their weblogic equivalent files?

  • I cannot print a PDF using the Adobe printer.

    I have been using the PDF printer for years on the same system (Windows Vista Business using Acrobat v8), but now it won't create a PDF document from any program (Firefox browser, MS Outlook mail, MS Word, etc.).  I can start the print process, and it gets to the Creating PDF screen then finishes but doesn't show the results and no document was created.
    I just downloaded a new version 8.2.5 but that didn't resolve the  problem, so I uninstalled all and reinstalled the program from a disk, then downloaded  multiple updates until I'm back to the current v8.2.5.  The Printing Preferences were reset to print to the default Output Folder, and I changed that back to my usual location, though I've had to change that in the several locations offered but it's still not saving it; could this be related to the non-print issue?
    The Printer is called Adobe PDF, the Driver is called Adobe PDF Cconverter.  I thought maybe the Driver got corrupted but I can't find  the Drivers on this site.  Please help!

    Hey Daniel,
    Have you tried repair Adobe Acrobat DC?
    If no, then please repair the installation under Help menu.
    This could also happen due to an Adobe Acrobat DC installation file corruption. To resolve this issue :-
    Uninstall Adobe Acrobat DC using the Acrobat cleaner utility.
    Restart your computer.
    Re-install Acrobat Acrobat DC  Download Adobe Acrobat free trial | Acrobat Pro DC.
    Let me know if the issue persist.
