Using Final Cut project with iMovie

Hi all,
is it possible to import a project from Final Cut to iMovie?
A friend did a DVD for us and we would like to add a video clip to it. The DVD was made in Final Cut and we have access to the original project. As I do not own Final Cut I would like to use iMovie to re-do the DVD without sacrificing all the work already done. Any suggestions?

I would think that the fact that the original movie project was done in FCE is immaterial, as it is now in the final delivery format of a DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • How to  back up Final Cut project with external hard drive. Absolute beginner, so simple steps appreciated.

Hello - How do I back up a Final Cut pro project onto an external hard drive?  It's a work in progress, not a completed project. I'm a total beginner and a step by step would really helpThanks

The auto-backup is the database only, not the media.
To back up the whole Library totally, first make sure to Consolidate it, then simply drag-and-drop it on to the backup drive, that simple.
The KB article referenced by Karsten suggests one additional step: make sure your copy of the library is not at the root level of the drive to which you are copying it. I have not clue why this might be important.
    Herewith:
Back up your Project Library and events using the Finder
To create a single backup copy of your Project Library and events, you can copy the Final Cut Projects folder and Final Cut Events folder to an external storage device.
If you are backing up incrementally, create a folder structure that helps you easily navigate through your backup folders. You could label the folders with the date you made the backup copy, for example.
Important:    To avoid issues, it’s essential that you place the backup files in a folder (named “2012 Final Cut Pro Backups,” for example) that is not at the root level of your external storage device.
In the Finder, locate and select your Final Cut Projects folder and Final Cut Events folder.Your Movies folder is the default location for all project and event files:/Users/username/Movies/ Important:    If you moved a project or event after you created it, it will not be in the default location.
Drag the Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events folders to the external storage device.
The folders are copied to your external storage device.

  • How to use Final Cut Pro with multiple user accounts?

    Hi,
I want to use Final Cut Pro on a clean user account. How do I set it up? How can I access my old FCP library and still work on it from multiple users?
Also, I want my DropBox account to back-up my media. Any tips?

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • How to use Final Cut pro with external hard drive?

I have too little space on my computer so I have to use final cut pro x with an external hard drive, but whenever I have the hard drive plugged in and Final cut going, my computer goes very slow. I just upgraded to 16gb ram... but can't seem to run FCP x while an external hard drive is plugged in. FCP just freezes up and I have to force quit.

all the files and events in final cut are still on my internal, so my internal drive is still full.... Do I have to go and delete everything off my internal?
In addition to the excellent advice to keep your media on an external HDD, you need to make sure that your system (boot) drive has a decent amount of free space if you want to have a satisfactory editing experience. Many people recommend not going below 20% free space. That's especially so for the boot drive, but as you fill up the external, its performance will also slow. Ideally, we would have separate media and backup drives,
You don't need to "delete everything". Rather, you first figure out what needs to be moved. You copy those files to the other drive and then verify that all the files you copied are in two locations. At that point you can delete those files from your boot drive.
    Good luck.

  • Final cut integration with imovie

is it possible for my daughter or wife to do a movie in imovie and me transfer it in final cut pro to perform tasks imovie cannot do? if so, will i loose anything? if not, would it work better with express?

You can but you will lose something.
If you import the iMovie project itself (not an exported file) into FCE you will lose some effects and audio levels. Others will remain.
If you first export a QT movie from iMovie and then import this QT movie file into FCE you don't lose quality or edits, but you will lose the ability to undo any edit you applied in iMovie.
    These are the tradoffs...

  • Using Final Cut Express With Sony DCR-TRV480

    Hello all,
This is a well known newbie problem and i have came across it before with a different camera and do not remember a fix. Whenever i launch Final Cut Express i get the message "Unable to locate the following devices. Apple FireWire NTSC (720x480)". The camera is clearly connected via fire-wire and turned on. Any insight or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    ~Dan

Do you have any other firewire devices connected to your Mac at the same time your camcorder is connected? If so, try it with only the camcorder connected.
Is your camcorder turned on in VCR (aka VTR) mode?
What versions of FCE and QuickTime are on your Mac?
Your profile says you are running OS X 10.6.3 - is that correct?

  • I want to use Final Cut Pro with Lion?

I have FCP 6.0.6 and Lion on MacBook Pro. Can't open FCP.

What happens when you try to open it?
Use Disk Utility to repair your system disk permissions.
Download (free) Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion -

  • Just Curious...when editing small projects do you use Final Cut or iMovie?

I need to learn how to edit in final cut, just wondering how much of a learning curve there is and what people's preference would be...editing in FC or iMovie 09
    thanks

    small, quick 'n dirty = iM09
    advanced, elaborated (=compositings, 'grading', SpecialFX) = FC/e4
esp, from iM09>>FC the learning curve is extreme! FC is a professional tool, no 'one click done', needs a lot of background knowledge, how things are done (=not the app, the concept ..)
I'm using both, simultanously for some projects - iM09's 'skimming' is an excellent tool for a 'rough pre-cut', .. and I LOVE the green-screen effect in iM, compared to less-intuitive color-key in FC/e ...
but, the more you get used to FC's interface, the faster you're working with it. => I would love to see an optional 'quick edit mode' in FC/e as in iM! both apps are from the same master-mind, greetings to Randy U.!

  • Created project using Final Cut Express 4, can I open it with Final Cut Pro

Created a short video using Final Cut Express 4, will my teacher be able to open this project up with Final Cut Pro???

Depends on exactly which version of FCP your teacher is using.

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • Why can't I use final cut pro 7 with Mavericks?

Why can't I use final cut pro 7 with Mavericks? Is any one else having problems? All my media is reputedly "offline" even though I can see all the files. Using the reconnect to media function doesn't do a thing. All of my previous projects are the same. Any ideas would be most welcome!

Because it is $299.99, and there is tax.
