Using finder icon to navigate continuously from folder to folder

A consultant set our old G5 (OS 10.4.11) so you could click and hold on the finder icon to open the HD and navigate continuously from folder thru subfolder, thru subfolder, thru subfolder, etc (like dragging and dropping a file – except without the file). Wanted to set my Intel Mac to do the same.  Messed up the old computer trying to figure out what the consultant had done (I think he altered sidebar options in finder preferences).  Now, when I click and hold on the finder a little window opens with the name of the computer, and below it says "hide."  (On my Intel Mac it just says "hide")  Wife's gonna kill me!  How do I restore old G4?  Can I get my G5 to open folders the way the G4 did, by just holding down on the finder icon?

Thanks Kappy,
I do get the "pop" feature when I drag my HD icon to the dock, next to the trash, but when using the "pop" feature I have to click on each individual subfolder I need to open to get to my destination.  The way our G4 worked required only a single click on the Finder icon.  By clicking on it, and then keeping the mouse held down, the HD would open, showing all its folders.  Dragging the mouse arrow to any single folder opened its window to reveal its subfolders.  Dragging to one of those folders opened its window, allowing you to drag to the next subfolder and the next - down the entire hierarchy to reach any sought-for file, without having to do any more clicking.  Do you know a way to restore that feature to the G4?   Any way to get it to work on my Intel Mac?
Thanks in advance.

  • Using FIND icon in Oracle Apps 11i

I have a custom 6i form in Orcale Apps 11i which uses a search screen to find matching records. Once I open up the main form, I want to be able to go back to the search screen using the FIND icon in the toolbar (right below the Edit button). I am not sure if I have to modify the custom.pll library to do that? How do I achieve that functionality?

  • Use Finder icons in the Dock?

The Finder sidebar has these really swell icons for certain standard folders:
Nice and clear and distinct from each other. The Dock icons for the same folders:
are not so swell as the Finder versions. Too similar to each other for me.
Is there a way to make the Dock use the same icons as the Finder?

you can use [CandyBar|http://www.panic.com/candybar>(shareware) or [Liteicon|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32346](freeware) to change system icons including dock icons.

  • TS4006 I used find my ipad from my iphone. I have now found my ipad. How do I re-activate it?

I used "find my ipad" last Friday, from my iphone. I found the ipad this morning at work, where I left it. How do I now, re-activate the ipad? It does not turn on.

Charge it in a wall outlet using the original accessories. Leave it alone for several hours, then with it still plugged in, reset by holding down the power & home buttons until you see the Apple. Let go and the device should reboot.

  • When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?

When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?
All of a sudden I noticed that most of the folders on my computer were no longer using the folder icon, but the generic document icon. I had to manually change back the icon being used by opening Get Info for each folder and copying and pasting the generic folder icon from some folders that remained unchanged. Now whenever I create a New Folder (right click -> "New Folder"), the icon that shows up is the generic document icon (white page with top right corner turned down). And I have to manually change it so it shows up as a folder in Finder or on my desktop. I don't know why or how this switch happened. All of the folders now on my computer look ok, but I need to change the default so when I create a New Folder it uses the correct icon.
I have also Forced Relaunch of my Finder and rebooted the system. I downloaded Candybar but am not sure what will fix anything, so I haven't proceeded.
Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

  • How do I add my Applications fold back onto the dock? People say I must drag it near the trash can, but that just puts it past that barrier. I am trying to get it back to where it disappeared from, on the left hand side near the finder icon.

With respect, you actually cannot store folders on the left side of the Dock - only on the right side. I wonder if you're talking about Launchpad, which looks like a silver rocket and shows you your installed applications? It's not actually a shortcut to the Applications folder, though. You can certainly drag Launchpad into the left side of the Dock from the Applications folder.

Gray screen when turning on iBook G4 with tiny file folder in center of screen blinking finder icon and question mark.  I cannot figure this out.  Tried everything I know.  Can someone help please???

    Hello,
Ideally you need to boot from the disk as you have no other media advisable. (e.g your hard drive)
Without some form of system disk or restore you wont be able to diagnose the problem with your hard drive.
By using a Mac OS X system disk you can load up the Disk Utilities and repair the hard drive if shown it's available. If it's not available you would need to replace the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS. Without any disk to support you, you are going to struggle.
You can obtain replacement disk, both retail copies or system disk on the Internet.
If you know what version of Mac OS X you had install (I'm guessing that it would have been 10.3, but would recommend 10.4) A retail disk is normally black with a colored 'X' on it, while system disk are always.
Always try and obtain a copy of the system restore disks (Gray) for your iBook
Ebay is another outlet that has genuine system disk for sell, but like any auction site, it's as and when someone is selling them.
The only other thing you could do is take it to a Apple repair agent who could check the hard drive on your behalf. That way you can get confirmation if the problem is the drive or some other fault. They may even help restore the OS for you.
I can't think of anything else to try without some form of disk to help you.
There maybe just one other small thing you could try.
When booting up, firmly rest your palm of your hand on the iBook next to the tracker pad on the left side.
If it works then it's another fault that I'm aware of.

  • Flashing Folder/Finder icon but normal boot?

Recently, my eMac has been doing this when I turn it on:
    1) Fan starts, screen buzzes but stays dark, and finally the boot chime sounds. Front Light comes on, CD drive and Hard Drive activate
    2) Screen turns on to a gray screen.
    3) Finder/Folder flashing icon shows for 2-15 seconds
    4) Apple logo replaces flashing icon and boots normally.
Is this a sign that there is something wrong with the eMac? I tried finding ways to change the boot order and made sure that Macintosh HD was set as my startup disk to no avail.

If the PRAM battery is dead and that causes the computer to forget some settings, it could be casting about to find a bootable volume. As you've used Startup Disk to select your HD, it could be the battery.
Are you cutting power to this computer when not using it? That means unplugging from the wall or using a power strip or backup power supply to turn it off. If so, stop. When turned off normally but on an active wall circuit, the computer gets a small trickle current thay bypasses the power supply so the PRAM battery does not have to work to preserive normal settings.
The symptoms you describe suggest that the computer is having times every day when no power can get to it. In spite of insistence by environmental types that you must unplug your computer when not is use, doing so is hard on many Mac desktop models.
I order my PRAM batts from these guys:
3.6v Newer Technology Lithium 1/2 AA PRAM Computer Clock Battery
You replace the battery through the same door through which you change RAM.

  • Dock uses icon of first item in folder rather than folder's own icon. Fix??

I have a folder with its own custom icon.  When I drag that folder to the right hand end of the dock (mine is set horizontally), Mavericks insists on setting the dock icon for that folder to the icon of the first item (alphabetically) in the folder, rather than the icon for the folder itself.  How do I fix this??
    Thanks!
    DM

    Hi William,
Thanks for your reply. It's already displayed as a folder, but this has nothing to do with how the contents are displayed when I click the icon in the Dock. I'm talking about the icon that the Dock shows for my folder. Changing the display options has no effect on that.
If I drag a new, empty folder from the Finder to the Dock, it has the standard OS X folder icon in the dock.  But as soon as I drag things into that folder (in the Finder), the dock icon changes to the icon for the first item in the folder. Even if I paste a custom icon into the folder's Get Info window in the Finder, the Dock ignores this and uses the icon for the first item in the folder.

  • How Can I Remove the Finder Icon From the Dock?

Hi! Can someone tell me how to remove the Finder icon from the dock? I don't even care if Finder quits. I just want it removed from the dock. I really don't care if I can't get to my files. Please help.

Start by going to your core services, (/system/library/coreservices). You can do this by pressing Shift+Cmd+G and then paste (/system/library/coreservices), without parentheses.
After doing this, find Dock.app, right click, show package contents. This doesn't contain the icons on your dock, just finder and trash.
After that, move all finder services to the desktop, and then erase them from the core services folder. At this point it will prompt you to put in your password, do so.
Next you'll want to open terminal and type 'killall dock' or, you could restart your computer.
This should remove the finder icon from your dock, while still giving you access to it from your desktop.
    Hope this helps!

  • I copied my Movies folder using Finder to an external HD before my MBP crashed and now can't get them back into iMovie library!!

I realize NOW that I should have moved the events and projects to external HD within iMovie but unfortunately I didn't. I also upgraded to Mavericks with the new internal HD. Problems...
    1) If I try and open a movie in iMovie from the Movies folder, none of the movies are highlighted so I cannot open them.
    2) When I open a movie using Finder in the Movies folder, it goes through this conversion process with QuickTime player which takes several minutes (we have over 700 videos).
Anybody have any suggestions to fix this problem? I still have the Movies folder in both the external HD and on my internal HD.
    Thanks in advance,
