Using Finder to locate specific photos

I try to look up photographs with Finder, but the Finder doesn't allow me to follow the path beyond the iPhoto Library icon under the "Picture" folder. I tried to "unlock" this by clicking on the "more info" button on the iPhoto Library section, but that didn't do anything. Does anyone have any suggestions???

I was trying to find the original photo and work with the original photo.
This is not a supported way of working with iPhoto. You risk damaging your Library and even losing your photos.
What work do you want to do?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Using Finder to locate specific file types....

Hi. I'm looking for bookmarks that may contain a particular word. Is there a way to filter my spotlight (or finder) searches just for a particular file type? I know you can sort results by file type, but it's rather just filter in the first place...

What kind of bookmarks are you referring to? For example, most web browsers these days have a search field in their bookmark manager so searching within the app might be easier than using Spotlight.
Also, new to Leopard, the Application "Help" menus use "Spotlight" now. So for example, entering a term in "Safari" > "Help" will bring up hits including matches in the "Bookmarks" and "History" menus. Something perhaps something similar will work for a programme that doesn't have it's own searchable bookmarks.
With respect to SpotLight, a search using "Kind" is "Other" and entering "bookmark" brings up some types of bookmarks (but clearly not all - I'm not sure what it's doing exactly). It's kind of cumbersome, but you could also add something like this to your query: 'kMDItemContentType:com.apple.safari.bookmark'...

How do I get iphoto to recognize that a computer really is connected to the internet?  I cannot use places to locate my photos, because the software keeps telling me my computer is not connected.  I know the computer is connected.

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. It the problem persists  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If the new library does'nt have that problem then your original library is damaged. Post back if that's the case and we'll go from there.

  • Use Find-Replace to paste/wrap Element name?

    Hi:
    For FrameMaker 7.2, structured.
I'm a longtime *unstructured* FrameMaker who is performing cleanup on some structured FrameMaker documents created by my customer.
One of my tasks is to find all Index markers and applying the IndexMarker element (square-cornered) tag to the markers.
I'm currently using the tedious and slow technique of using Find to locate and select the Index tag, then in the Element catalog clicking "IndexMarker" followed by "Wrap".
I've poked around hoping I could find Copy Special / Paste Special choices that would speed this mousing-intensive chore up, but haven't found any such choices that work.
So -- is there some "intelligent" way to Find / Replace my way through this problem? Even if I manually have to click Replace at every instance, it's faster than what I'm doing...
    Cheers & thanks,
    Riley

    Riley,
As much as I appreciate the unsolicited endorsements, I have to clarify that FrameSLT cannot help you with this task. It can do lots of things associated with structural management, but all of its current capabilities are dependent upon existing structure. More specifically, it requires existing structure to find the items for which it intends to manage, which your current markers do not have. So, while it can do things like element wrapping, it wouldn't be able to find the unstructured markers in order to wrap them.
This would be a reasonably simple task for a custom API client or FrameScript script. If you have zillions of these to do, it might be worth your while to explore that option. If not, Gary's suggestion might be your best bet.

  • Opera has magically installed itself yet I can't find its' location

    Hi all,
About half an hour ago I tried opening a .torrent file only to have Opera pop up. Now this is curious as I never installed Opera and yet somehow the browser became the default application for torrent files. Not only that, but apparently I have both Opera 9.27 and 9.00 installed. This didn't happen last night when I last opened a torrent file which leads me to believe its a new installation.
I tried using spotlight to find opera and no luck. So I used Find to locate the app. Again, no luck. So I set Find's search parameters to show all applications on my mac. Still Opera is no where to be found, neither 9.27 nor 9.00. It is definitely installed as Opera opened and loaded webpages just fine but the only way to open opera is to right click a torrent file and select it. ***?
Earlier today I downloaded Temperature Monitor (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994) and installed it. Nowhere do I see Opera is even mentioned and I haven't downloaded anything else. However, I cannot think of any other way Opera would have ended up on my system.
So... since neither spotlight nor Find can locate Opera, how to I find it? I've located all the Lib files associated with Opera but not the actual application. This really bothers me as it indicates to there possibly being other applications installed that I am not aware of. Has anyone else run into something similar, whether with opera or another piece of software?
    Thanks in advance.

Many Adobe applications, such as Photoshop Elements, have a copy of Opera built in as a help viewer. You won't find it in an ordinary search because it is inside the application bundle (e.g., inside Photoshop).
This explanation solved a head-scratching mystery for me as well, since when I right-clicked an image file and looked at the "Open with..." possibilities, I was seeing multiple versions of Opera, but a Finder search would only reveal the location of one of them.
But it also raises a puzzling question:
If the "Open With..." contextual menu can see files which are contained inside Package bundles, and the Dock's "Show In Finder" function can do the same, WHY can't those same files be seen by a either a Spotlight search or a conventional top-right-corner-of-any-Finder-window search?
Seems strangely inconsistent, since these different functions are all part of the same OS -- or is there some obvious reason for this that I'm missing?

  • How can I change to location of pictures folder? I want to use a backup hardrive to store my photos and music on but still want to be able to go to the finder and click the photos/music button. How can I do this.

I want to use a backup hardrive to store my photos and music on but still want to be able to go to the finder and click the photos/music button. In windows i would just change the properties of the given library folder. How can I do this in Lion?

Move "~/Pictures", or if just iPhoto pictures, "~/Pictures/iPhoto Library", to the new location.
If you moved iPhoto, open iPhoto with the option key held, like Tony T1 writes. Select "Other Library" and navigate to the new location.
To add the new location to the sidebar in Finder, just drag it onto the sidebar.
Same process for iTunes, or whole music folder.

I have lightroom 5.7. Now I have apple TV to connect my Mac to the TV scree. I wish to do a slide show on the TV. However, on the Mac, using ITunes to share photos with the TV, I cannot locate all photo files. What is the best way to save the slide show and put it where the Mac sharing can find it? So far, I made on one folder in Lightroom, put some photos there and I found them easily. Can this be done with a slide show? Please help quickly! Also worried that the photos I put on the new folder are hard to find afterwards, when the show is done. Where do they go when I delete from from the new folder?I am not alone

Not that I'm aware of. You just export JPEG copies to a folder that you can point iTunes to. For instance, I have created a folder in my Pictures folder called Apple TV. And within that folder I have other folders of pictures that I can choose from in iTunes to share with Apple TV. But there doesn't seem to be any way to share a Lightroom slideshow. If you have laid to create a video file that would probably work. Apple TV is a little clunky in my opinion. Some things are a little more difficult to do now than they were a while back. I probably haven't provided you with much help, but just keep experimenting and I think you will figure it out.

  • Using FINDER - Organise photos in ascending chronological order

In windows you can put your photos in filename order, date created, modified etc the same as Finder, however I cannot find how to choose to put photos in ascending chronological date order. When you choose Date created it organises them backwards from the most recent photo. I would never show holiday snaps backwards nor read a book backwards. I have multiple cameras and would like to collate all the photos together in the order they were taken.
When you go into Adobe Bridge CS4 you can put into ascending or descending order and I tried to save this order into my Finder folder but it does not keep it.
I was trying to avoid renaming my originals at this stage. I did a test and renamed a batch of photos in Adobe Bridge and it renumbers the photos etc but when you go into finder under list view the numbers are like 1,3,4....19,2,20,21 Bizarre.
As I have too many photos and always change and add folders, I prefer not to organise albums etc through programs like iPhoto. I'd rather store the originals in FINDER (which is the equivalent to Windows). This way I can draw upon my photos via a photo organiser program if I want to for a specific project but can always find ALL of my photos at any time even if I've changed around the folders.
Why can't APPLE allow something so simple as date created ascending and keep their numbering systems in order??? I just want my photos in date order for storage in FINDER. Can anyone help?

...but only for date modified not created.
Not true. If you elect to have the Date Created field shown by checking the box for it in the Finder's View menu > View Options, it works exactly the same way for that field as for any other: just click the arrow to toggle the direction of sorting.
There is no "thumbnail view" in the Finder (again, see the View menu for the four view options: icons, list, columns, and cover flow. I presume icon view is what you mean. You can sort the icons in icon view by creation date, but you can't reverse the sort order in that view. If that's what you're complaining about, then you're simply discovering belatedly that the Finder isn't a photo management application and doesn't meet your need for one. You'll need to use one to do what you want to do, and when you choose the right one, you'll realize how much better it is for that purpose than the Finder — not just in that one way, but in lots of others as well.
Note that I'm not putting in a plug here for iPhoto, Bridge, GraphicConverter, Aperture, or any other app in particular: there are so many of them available that you should try a bunch and see which you like best.

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.

My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

If you open the Maps app where does that say you are located?
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

    Hi Thomas ...
Open System Preferences > Spotlight then select the Search Results tab.
Select the all the categories for the search results you want.
    Restart your Mac.
If that didn't help the Spotlight preferences may be corrupted.
    Go to ~/LIbrary/Preferences
Move the com.apple.spotlight.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Try Spotlight.
