Using font for design

Mr. Dov Isaacs and other crew,
Thank you all for so simple answers on forum, you are the best because something complicated you answer on a simple way, but I have one more question. As you said buying licence means that we are able to use font for design, print, etc. but if we are designing let say watermark for photo, because I am hobby photographer, not selling anything but like to design watermarks for my photos. Is it ok to add or attach ornament to letter, let say if I am using letter M inside some font is it ok if I attach flower to left leg of M, or ornament or anything, not changing software or anything else just adding something that is representing things that I do?

What you can do with a particular font depends upon the font and whom you license the font from. For fonts you license from Adobe, you may make any modifications or augmentations you want, either to the font itself, its outlines (assuming let's say you “outline” some text) or rasters. The restriction is that you may not redistribute such fonts to others, the visual results in your artwork or photos, yes, the fonts themselves, no.

Dashboard is now using Fonts for Safari

Ever since I created a snippet of a Web Page in Dashboard I have had Overlapping Fonts in some of my Widgets. I could not understand why until I found another user had the same problem after creating a snippet of a web page in Dashboard. Apparently Dashboard is using the Fonts for the Safari. Can Anyone help me with this problem?As it is now I can't read some of the material in some of the Widgets as the Fonts are large and overlapping each other.

I solved this myself by deleting the dashboard preferences!

Lock-procedure using headstart for designer

When deleteing a record from a form that has been generated using
designer (headstart installed), I get the error "FRM - 40700 No
such procedure: LOCK-PROCEDURE". I looked through the
headstart library QMSLIB50.pll and found three reference to this
procedure but can not find the actual procedure. What am I
missing?

Alan,
I'm not sure what the problem could be. I have tried this myself
and have no problem doing the delete (or updates). Note: I'm on
Form Builder 6.0. You don't mention which version you are using.
Assumptions:
You have created a TAPI for your base table.
You have created a MAPI for your module.
You have set the module component to Data Target Type = PL/SQL
Procedure.
You have generated the module.
If you look at the form in Form Builder, the block should have
DML Data Target Type = Procedure and DML Data Target Name = null
or a package.procedure name. The insert, update, delete and lock
procedures should be filled in with the appropriate procedure
names. You should have a block level ON-LOCK trigger that
contains a call to qms$event_data_block('ON-LOCK') in
qmsevh50.pll. (Designer should do all this for you.)
In qmsevh50.pll, qms$event_data_block should contain a call to
qms$record.on_lock in qmslib50.pll. This procedure should check
the dml data target name and if it is null or contains a
package.procedure name, it should call the execute_trigger
procedure to execute the LOCK-PROCEDURE trigger.
This procedure is automatically generated by Form Builder at
runtime. The Form Builder on-line help has the following to say
(under 'Lock-Procedure Trigger'). "Automatically created by Form
Builder when the lock data source is a stored procedure. This
trigger is called when a lock operation is necessary. Think of
this as an ON-LOCK trigger that is called by the system instead
of doing default lock operations. Do not modify this trigger."
This is only valid when the dml target type is Procedure. If the
dml target type is table, the dml target name should contain the
name of a table. Oh, I just thought of something. Are you
by any chance using schema.table_name in your blocks? If so,
this would cause the problem you describe. See the note in the
qms$record.on_lock procedure in qmslib50.pll. Ideally, the code
should simply check the dml target type for Procedure. However,
due to a forms bug (655567), we can't do this. So, we used a
work-around. We check for the presence of a '.' in the name
assuming that if a '.' is present, it must be
'package.procedure'. However, it could also be 'schema.table'.
If this is the case, you might want to consider using the new
'alter session set current schema' option available in Oracle
8.x. Rather than referencing the schema in each block, you add a
line to your application library to set the schema when the user
first logs on. See the Headstart Template Package User Guide,
chapter 8 (Runtime Environment), 'Alter Session Current Schema'.

Non retina MacBook pro 2.3 vs 2.6 for design

I want to purchase a new MacBook pro. I don't want to get the retina because I plan on upgrading it. I am stuck between the 15in 2.3 ghz and the 2.6 ghz. I made both of them identical spec wise:
750 gb 7200 rpm
8 gb ram
Hi-res anti glare screen
The 2.3 ghz comes out to $2,014 and the 2.6 ghz is $2,134. Is it worth the 100+ upgrade? I plan to use this for design work for school (photoshop, illustrator) and some video editing. Also the 2.6 ghz has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory vs the 512mb in the 2.3. Which do you recommend for me to get? I'm buying this with my own money so I would like to save as much as possible. Thank you.

ID CS5 for designing websites?

Hi there all you helpful people!
I have asked this question before - but it was a while ago and I wondered if things had changed for anyone.
Is anyone using IDCS5 for designing/prototyping websites?
I am a print and web designer and use ID for all my print work and FW for all my web work.
Increasingly I am getting more and more frustrated with FW - so many simple things that it does sooooooo badly compared to ID.
Now that IDCS5 has the ability to design in pixels there is the option to design websites in ID, however, it will not export to png format and I know that will make it hard for our coders to use.
Does anybody have any experiences of using it to design websites and if you do, what workflow do you use?

In my experience, you will have great difficulty exporting everything your coder/developer requires from InDesign. Once designed, typically your developer will need individual images for each section and hex color codes - both of which are not easy to get from InDesign alone.
I have used InDesign for 'Prototyping' a website but more for the functionality and to show several pages but the design was 100% done in Photoshop. Basically I exported a JPEG from PS of every page in the website that is different and then imported that into InD - one JPEG per page. I then overlayed buttons on top to show the menu working and when clicked, navigated to those pages via InD buttons "Go to Page" function. The buttons themselves can have a gradient overlay so it looks like they are being hovered over. It gave a rather simple example of how the website would finally function and was saved as a PDF so all reviewers could see it.
InDesign was also used for the style guide which was then sent to the developer, which included all hex codes, text styles and dimensions.

To clear up (what I saw as) a bit of confusion, if you're simply using the font to create the logo and sending it to your client in a non-editable format, they do not need to purchase the font.
Only if they plan to use the same font on future materials - or if you send them a live text version of the logo - do they need to make the purchase.

Adobe Fonts used in logo design and copyright laws

Hi, if you are using an Adobe design software such as Illustrator, Flash or Fireworks to create a logo or banner for use as print and or web where it includes Adobe font in the logo and the characters create words ie; the trading name of the business do you need to approach Adobe for permission to use the fonts or is it expected considering the software is for graphical creations?

Why are we now saying that Photoshop can be used for logos? And what is wrong with CorelDraw? For someone who does not want to argue, it seems odd that an argument is happening within their own posts. :)
The ideal logo design tool offers versatile vector path editing tools and spot color swatch capability. Logo designers generally use Freehand, Illustrator, or CorelDraw... which all offer these abilities.

We didn't say it doesn't work. We said it isn't supported.
There are a number of other ways to make a PDF. The one which would
give the most control is if your application directly printed to GDI,
controlling the font directly. This could print to Adobe PDF.
You could look for an application that gives control of font for
printing.
You could use a text-to-PostScript system and distill the result. You
could even look for a non-Adobe text-to-PDF.
Working in the unsupported and dangerous world you chose, the font
size for text conversion is set (and this is very bad design from
Adobe) in the settings for Create PDF > From Web Page. There is no API
to this.

While in zh|ja locale, zh|ja fonts are used even for Latin... why?

One thing that has always bothered me is that my system uses funny fonts when it is running in a non-English locale, and I think I finally found the culprit.
When I check for font matching in English everything seems normal:

DejaVuSans goes /after/ iYaHei. This is a problem, as iYaHei's Latin glyphs look horrible; its CJK glyphs, while not the best, are at least extensive, which is why I use it. For monospace it is even more of a problem, because then Arial MS Unicode, which isn't even a monospace font gets priority over DejaVu Sans Mono in zh|ja environments.

This is probably happening because while I'm in a zh|ja locale, the system is looking for the highest font on my priority list that says it is a zh|ja font and then uses it—even to cover Latin etc glyphs that fonts higher in my priority list can cover; I'm guessing this is because it is assuming that those fonts aren't suitable for use in a zh|ja environment.
So the simplest way to solve the problem that everyone would immediately think of is to say that DejaVu can do zh|ja. I (presume) it wouldn't cause any problems even though they can't, because then they will simply borrow from real zh|ja fonts and will now at least be used in a zh|ja locale. Actually, I would want this behaviour no matter what way I decide to solve the problem.
The other—and better—solution to the problem would be to specifically set a different priority list to be used for different languages. That way when the system looks for "sans:lang=zh_TW", it'll get DejaVu at the top of the list to handle Latin, and then a nice traditional Chinese font. Likewise if the system looked for "sans:lang=ja", it'll get DejaVu with a nice Japanese font. Before I didn't think this was possible, but now that I see how this font matching is working, it would be weird if it wasn't possible.
Right now I have these nice Chinese/Japanese fonts installed on my system, but I don't always get to use them (mostly while browsing, if the html is nice enough). I made my system default iYaHei (and the firefly font for serif) because iYaHei covers almost all of CJK and is readable. If I were to put one of the nice Chinese or Japanese fonts as my system default, I'd end up having some glyphs being borrowed from another font, and it looks really ugly when this happens. Monolinguals don't have this problem, because they can just set their system font to their language, and then be done with it, as they'll rarely need to display any glyphs unsupported.
If anyone can help me, especially with getting a different priority list for different languages, it would be appreciated.

I had to put zh_TW at the very top, otherwise matching for zh_TW would pull up meiryo first. There is still one little problem in that matching for ko will pull up MS Mincho before Batang, but whatever, I don't really care that much. Meiryo and Malgun Gothic also still go before DejaVu Sans for some reason, but this again doesn't really matter, and might actually be a good thing.
So far setting it like this seems to work to some degree. More of Niconico Douga uses Meiryo now (the search bar and stuff still uses iYaHei, but I don't think much can be done about that), if I run a program with LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 and it has Japanese support it'll use Meiryo too. But this doesn't work with Chinese. (I guess because I had country codes in my Chinese matching rules) Oh well, this is still a step up, and Trad Chinese with a Simp Chinese font isn't as bad as Japanese with a Simp Chinese font; I've gotten used to seeing it everywhere. (Heck, the book I'm using to study Chinese now is a translation from a book made to study Simplified - and although it is a traditional book, it still uses the same simplified font.)
EDIT: Actually, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the program having Japanese support or not. Some programs will use Meiryo, others will completely ignore the fontconfig settings (and use iYaHei). Sonata for example, even though it had a working Japanese localization, used iYaHei, while thunar and mousepad used Meiryo.
I used to have this bug that pretty much made working in CJK locales impossible, it took a really long time to open up terminals because of the messed up font settings. This seems to be fixed in a Japanese locale, but not a Taiwanese. Again, I guess this has to do with the country code above. (If you use a country code do you need to put a different syntax? Because other than the fc-match -s "sans:lang=zh_TW" results, the Chinese lines don't seem to have any effect—though I guess if that command shows it, they must be affected?)
Also, I'm not sure if I've been blind and not noticed it until now, but after applying these Changes /all/ kana are using Meiryo. (Unless specified otherwise) This is both a good thing and a bad thing—no, I think it is a bad thing. Because Japanese text uses kana and kanji (CJK unified block). So now when I have a Japanese filename in thunar, the kana shows up using a proper Japanese font, but the Chinese Characters in the name show up using a Chinese font. While this is kind of okay of the fonts look similar, it isn't a good solution because not all fonts are designed to work well with each other, and my main goal in this quest is to avoid having to "borrow" from another font when the default font can't display a glyph properly. (Meiryo and iYaHei kiiinda look similar, so it isn't that bad, but if one day I decided to set my default gtk font to serif for some reason then I'll have problems for sure.) If somehow the system was able to tell if the text was Japanese or Chinese and use the appropriate font, that would be good, but I am aware that that sort of magic is impossible.
I want the computer to be able to use the correct font when some program specifies the text is in that language (perhaps by the locale, or perhaps by the other magic method niconico uses), but I want the english locale to use iYaHei for everything just to be safe because it works.

Hoping that that would allow iYaHei to be used as the main fallback while using an English locale, but that doesn't happen; it still uses Meiryo for Kana, but it uses WenQuanYi Zen Hei for Chinese, which looks even worse than Meiryo and iYaHei.
So now I'm debating whether to use the new configurations or the old configurations. The new configurations fix a few things in Japanese locales, but cause a possibly grave problem in non-Japanese locales. I'm sure it has a few other effects too, but I didn't notice them yet.
What exactly is this fontconfig format supposed to do? Because it clearly isn't "setting a priority list for fonts to be used in a certain language". It seems more like "setting a priority list for fonts that are labelled as a certain language". Or maybe it just does some random stuff to the fonts described. I can't tell.
The core of the problem seems to be in the fonts themselves. Somehow, these fonts are claiming to cover "Chinese, Japanese, Korean" etc etc and while they probably do that, most can only cover 1 language in an acceptable way. Where do the fonts store this information? Is there a way to edit this?

Support for different fonts in design mode

It's very difficult figuring out where to place components in
design mode when special fonts are used. Because they take up
more/less space than the default font (used in design mode), the
actual sizes of components when the app actually runs is never the
same as they were in design mode.
Basically if you're using special fonts, design mode becomes
half useless. Is there a way around this problem? Can we at least
change the font that design mode uses somehow?

Heh, just noticed it DOES work on my highest level mxml file
(application tag mxml), but not the others. Still experimenting...
seems to be a bug of some kind, I guess.
It seems that if you specifically include the style tag:

It works fine, even for mxml nested in sub folders. Of
course, this is ugly- I had to put a bunch of ../'s just to reach
the css file I need, AND "refresh" the design view for it to
work...

I can’t afford to buy Photoshop just to construct two special capital letters. I’ve used the B and M in my logo for Balquhidder Music for years - but from jpgs - and I was hoping to have more flexibility in the future. I spent $169 to make sure I am in compliance. But I didn’t get anything of use to me.
I can’t understand why those Alternate Caps are not part of this - or any other package. I thought Adobe was capable of amazing things.

Actually, when Adobe moved from Type 1 fonts to OpenType CFF fonts, all the so-called “expert typefaces” were consolidated into the base fonts. In other words Adobe Garamond Pro Regular not only has the Western Latin characters of the original Type 1 version of Adobe Garamond, but also has alternate Latin capitals (with titling, titling floating accents, and stylistic alternates), alternate Latin lowercase (swash and superiors), Latin small capitals (alphabetic and floating accents), ligatures, multiple numeric forms (including lining tabular, lining proportional, oldstyle tabular, oldstyle proportional, superscripts, scientific inferior, numerator, denominator forms, fractions, mathematical operators, etc.) plus a raft of other special symbols.
OpenType fonts are Unicode-based and allow for more than the 256 characters in Type 1 fonts which required multiple typefaces all with mappings to a standard keyboard to accommodate all these glyphs.
Thus, hopefully your disappointment will turn to joy.
To assist you in understanding OpenType fonts and to show you what is in the current Adobe Garamond fonts, I have attached a few PDF files for your perusal.

Xserver-terminus-fonts pkgbuild. designed for console&xt

These are very nice and clean, fixed width fonts designed for use under console and X.
Description from the homepage:
Terminus Font is designed for long (8 and more hours per day) work with computers. Version 4.09 contains 594 characters, covering code pages ISO8859-1/2/5/9/13/15/16, Windows-1250/1251/1252/1254/1257, IBM-437/852/855/866, KOI8-R/U/E/F, Bulgarian-MIK, Paratype-PT154/PT254, Macintosh-Ukrainian and Esperanto, and also the vt100 and xterm pseudographic characters.
The sizes present are 8x14, 8x16, 10x20, 12x24, 14x28 and 16x32. The styles are normal and bold, plus EGA/VGA-bold for 8x14 and 8x16.
The package can be split into 2 separate packages if you really need it (one for console and one for x-server). I don't need 2 packages :-)

If I use a web font in my website can I use the same font for printed materials such as business car

I am a graphic designer intending to design a portfolio website in Adobe Muse. I plan to use TypeKit web fonts to design my website. Upon completioin of the website I intend to design business cards and my resume to match the look of my website. I would like to use the same fonts as I used on the website. Is it possible to use web fonts for printing purposes? If not, what do people typically do in this situation. The last thing I want to do is use a font that "looks" like the ones used on my website.

(I think I may have replied to your Typekit Support ticket earlier today, but I will post the same information here to be certain.)
We have recently added a new feature to Typekit that allows you to sync fonts to your desktop and use them in print design. The announcement on our website has more information:

Font sync is available on any Typekit Portfolio, Performance, or Business plan. Here is a list of all the font available for desktop use:

We are continuing to license more of the library for desktop use, but for now you should confirm that the font you would like to use it available for both web and desktop. And if there is a font you'd like to use that isn't available for desktop sync, you may also be able to purchase a license directly from the foundry.
