Using FrontRow with Bonjour on a NAS drive

Is it possible to have iTunes running on a Network Attached Storage drive connected to a router and have FrontRow on the New Mac Mini still find all the media? I'm just wondering this since I will have all my media on a NAS making it easier for all the computers on my house network access the media. I plan on using the Bonjour feature so I don't have to put all the media directly on the Mac but want to make sure it will find it even if it is not directly on another PC.

I would obviously have iTunes running on the Mac Mini I purchase but I would have the acutal songs stored on the NAS. If I do this I should be able to pull them up using FrontRow on the mac and just using normal iTunes on my PC correct?

  • Using an "iTunes Server" on a NAS drive for several users

Like many others I'm trying to make a single drive containing my iTunes media serve different iTunes users round the house.
Will the following work? Comments welcomed.
Currently my iTunes Media Folder and media live on my main PC. About 130Gb in total.
I'd like to get a NAS drive that has "iTunes Server" functionality and put this NAS drive on our home network. Then I'd like to move my iTunes media folder location into the 'iTunes Server' folder on the NAS drive. I'd also like to transfer all the data files associated with iTunes to the NAS drive. I believe with iTunes 10 that shouldn't be a problem and that I can contunue to use iTunes on my main PC as I ever did....it's just the media and data files will now all reside on the networked NAS.
Now I'd like to point all the iTunes on the other PCs in the house to the networked iTunes Media folder and the networked data files. Then presumably they will boot up and be able to access everything just like my main PC.
I understand that if more than one PC tries to edit the data files and iTunes media folder then corruption will inevitably result. I wondered if this could be prevented by using access rights management to all the networked iTunes files so that only my main PC can actually edit anything, add music, etc.
That way I hoped that I may manage the library successfully, create playlists as required and have all the other PC users enjoy my work but without screwing it up!
Maybe an iTunes data file can't be read by two instances of iTunes at the same time? Perhaps a second PC reading the data files can cause a corruption, if my main PC happens to be editing those files at the same time?
In essence I want all iTunes related files on the NAS drive. I want all PCs(with iTunes) in the house to have full read-only access to the music, playlists etc. However I would like my main PC to remain as the sole machine that administers the iTunes library and related files.
Looking forward to any help. Like others I've spent many hours trying to ascertain the best way to share a single iTunes media store around the house.
I know I could leave my main PC on and have the other PCs get at the content that way. However the power consumption of my desktop setup is not insignifcant and we will have a NAS drive running 24/7 anyway for other duties.
    Hope that all makes sense.
    Cheers
    Geoff

I now realise that if what I propose will work then "iTunes server" is not required on the NAS. However if the iTunes Media Folder was placed in the "iTunes Server" on the NAS then other media players like the ROKU could access the files?

  • How can I improve NFSv3 file performance with MythTV thru a NAS Drive?

Basically, I have both my MythTV combined frontend/backend machine and a NAS Drive connected via gigabit ethernet connections.
The NAS drive stores my recordings, shared via NFSv3 (because that's all the NAS drive came with, unfortunatly).
Now, my problem is that I can record or watch multiple *seperate* HD files simultaneously, travelling back and forth from the NAS without problem.
However when I try to watch the same file *While it's still being recorded*, after around 20 minutes the network connection is full/overloaded (between the mythserver and the NAS drive) and playback grinds to a halt (It doesn't stop the recording, just the playback).
It used to happen much quicker when I was only using a 100mb connection.
As i've said, this doesn't happen at ALL with seperate files, just only if i watch the *same* file that's being recorded at the same time.
Is there anyway (bar just having the recordings on a Hard Drive within my backend) that I can stop this problem? Is it because I use NFSv3 on the NAS drive? are there any options I can change in the /etc/exports file on the NAS drive that would help? Thanks
If you want me to post what my NAS drive (Readynas Duo V2) has in its /etc/exports file, I will

Post the file but I dunno how many Archer are using NFSv3... ;/

  • ITunes can't sync with iPhoto Library on NAS-Drive

As I have a lot of pictures and want to have them in a save place (RAID) i transfered the iPhoto Library to my NAS-Drive and told iPhoto to use the new location.
iPhoto works great with this setting - but when I try to sync my iPod Touch or iPhone with the Photo-Lib all I get is an empty Library. I don't want to sync with a disk-folder, but the iPhoto-Library to use the "Sync folder"-Option!
When i set the "Sync Pictures with..."-Feature at the Photos-Tab to "iPhoto" it shows an empty library ("no photos"). When I create a new (second) iPhoto-Lib at the default location (inside user folder) it works fine.
Why doesn't use iTunes the CURRENT LOCATION of the Photo-Library instead of using some STUPID DEFAULT PATH?! Who writes Software like this?! And the most important question: HOW CAN I PATCH THAT?!
An Alias of the iPhoto Library in the default-location doesn't work - so what's next?!
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Greetings from Germany
    Thomas
PS: Spelling of locations, menues and so on are roughly translated from my german os version...

It is not of any help but have exactly the same issue. Called one of our local radio Tech Shows (The Tech Guy, with Leo Leporte) and for what it is worth his only answer was that it was a bug. He noted that apparently i-Tunes was not looking at i-Photo for the library location but rather, as you have noted, only looks in the default location.
Be interested if you get this solved or come up with another work around that does not require my library to be in the default directory.
As you noted i-Photo is happy it is just the sync with i-Tunes, it just doesn't work,

  • Using iMovie with external USB 2.0 drive

I use iMovie on a 2-year old MacBook Pro. The MacBok Pro has Firewire 800 and but only USB 2.0. I've been using an external Firewire drive with it for storing my movies. Now it is full and I need to get another external drive. However all the new drives I've seen are only USB.
My question: Will it be a problem to use iMovie using USB 2.0? (The new drives are all USB 3.0, but the computer is only 2.0). Will I be able to edit movies that are on the extenal drive? Or will I need to store the "in-progress" movies on the computer, and then move them to the external drive when I'm done with them.
And when I ask "will I be able to" I mean doing it without seeing endless beachballs...
    Thanks!
    Dan

There are plenty of firewire drives available. This is one of the best:

  • How to use itunes with music all on external drive?

I have a PC laptop - with Itunes installed. I have a LOT of music all organized neatly on an external drive.
Itunes folders obviously live on the internal drive, but music is all on external (not enough room on internal).
I can dump the folder from the external drive onto itunes, and all the music is there - great.
But I dont ALWAYS have that drive connected - and sometimes I open itunes when its not - for my phone sync or to buy something
    from the itunes store.
I have done this for years, and only in more recent years has this become a problem - when I connect the drive, it has lost all the links to the
music on it. I go into "preferences/advanced" - and tell it to look at the folder on the external drive - and it looks like its re-establishing the links - but it still does not. This only used to happen rarely - and I would have to clear itunes, then drop the folder again - but now it does it every time that I re-attach the drive after I have used itunes when it was NOT attached.
I have to clear all my musis and then drop the folder again - which takes a while - I have tens of thousands of songs.
    please help!
    Thanks!

Try to use instructions for consolidating library from here, see if that helps. At some point I have noticed, especially with huge library it gets hard for itunes to keep information about different locations, unless you have external drive plugged permanently.

  • Use Router with bonjour

Hi I have a d-link router, a windows pc, an iBook and a HP 5610. Right now the printer is connected through USB to the PC. but I can't print wirelessly with my iBook. So i want to use my router and "host" (give my printer an ip adress) so i can use bonjour to print. Is this possible?? if not what other soluations are there?

If you install Bonjour for Windows, Bonjour will make your printer available without having to deal with any ip address.

No, the USB of the Airport is ONLY for printer. However, your harddrive could simply be share on your network when it is plug on your computer...

  • Difficulties Using iTunes With External Drive (NAS)

    Hello,
I apologize if this question has already been asked (and answered) but I was unable to locate an answer with a search.
I am working on a PC with Windows 7. I have two iTunes libraries in separate user locations: one is a collection of MP3 files (for my iPod) and another—in a separate user log-on called Lossless—consists of all my lossless codec music files.
When I transferred the lossless codec files from the hard drive on my computer to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) connected by a hard-wired router (designated “Z:”), I configured iTunes to locate the files under “Z:/Music”.
Here’s the glitch: Although iTunes is finding “Z:/Music”, the iTunes program reports: “The song __ cannot be played because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?”
Here’s the question: Even though I have iTunes correctly (I believe) pointed to reading the NAS (my “Z:/Music” drive) why is iTunes unable to read the file and play the music?
Any advice and suggestions would be most welcome.
    Many thanks.
    Jazz4Ever

Barging in,b noir - I don't think it has anything to do with being on a NAS drive. It's the way the files were moved.

If you just move files in Windows Explorer, itunes loses the paths.
Configuring iTunes to locate the files under “Z:/Music” only affects FUTURE additions-it doesn't change all the paths on whatever is already in your library, which is what most people expect to happen when they change that preference setting.
You needed to run the consolidate command on your lossless library.
Here is a good background article from iLounge on that:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/
Move everything back the way it was and run the consolidate.
Or, if you don't care about ratings, playcounts, etc....just make a new lossless library and add your Z: lossless files to it.

  • ML won't connect to NAS drive for Time Machine Backup

I've just upgraded  from Lion to Mountain Lion.
I'm using an Iomega Cloud Edition Home NAS drive. This worked 'fine' under Lion (occasional need to redo backup after failed verify).
    Now:
    - Automatic backups fail - TM can't find the drive over the network (wired or wireless)
    - I can use Finder to see files on the drive, connect to the TM share, look into the Sparsebundle etc. Copy/Delete/Move files. In short - the NAS shares are fully accessible EXCEPT to TM
    - If I force a backup from the menu bar (back up now) it fails with the same error message.
    - If, however, I open Time Machine Preferences, and alt-click/right-click on the disc icon and then choose 'back up now', the back up will start and progress nicely.
In short, automatic back ups don't work, forcing from the menu bar doesn't work, but I can manually back up if I right-click on the disc icon in Time Machine Preferences.
At this point then, TM is failing me as a useful back up option. It's supposed to be 'set up and forget about it' security. It isn't under ML.
And this problem only started after the ML upgrade.
    Thoughts?
Please help - this is now taking up too much time!

Thanks Pondini for your responses - perhaps you could add this tip to your website?
Since I don't have a NAS, I've been reluctant to post any detail about them.
The closest I got was #C16 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, because almost all NASs weren't compatible with Lion, but is now mostly out of date.
Without the proper qualifications (what TM message, if any, folks are getting; or what they may see in the NAS's interface), it might steer folks in the wrong direction, or provide no help at all.  For example, that link says it happens when TM has been set up via Lifeline 3.2.6 or below.  I have no idea what that is, or what Iomega NAS models this current problem applies to, etc.
That's why I usually just recommend checking with the maker.
I've thought about a general page, something like "problems with Time Machine and NASs" but I really don't think I could include enough info to be useful.
    But I'm open to suggestions.

  • Using EXA with VIA hardware

According to xorg.freedesktop.org, EXA now works with VIA Unichrome:
    Supported:
        * i128 (Solid and Copy only so far, incompatible with DGA, only tested on T2R4 cards)
        * radeon (r100/r200 with Render accel, r300 and r400 core-only. DGA 2d acceleration unsupported).
        * sis (sis/xgi; Solid and Copy only)
        * trident cyberblade and xp4 (Solid and Copy only)
        * via (Solid, Copy, Render)
    However, when I add
    Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
to the "Device" section in xorg.conf, EXA is not used, and I get this in Xorg.0.log:
(WW) VIA(0): Option "AccelMethod" is not used
This happens with both the xf86-video-via and xf86-video-unichrome drivers. Could someone please explain to me why this is happening, and how I can get EXA working with one or both of those drivers?

    JGC wrote:
What makes you think Xorg 7.1 will be better with compositing in the classic ways? EXA has been improved, but it's still experimental and slow. The only improvements I've seen is rendering glitches that got solved and a complete API change to make it more usable.
You will need an OpenGL compositor, like metacity or a patched up version of compiz, and then, you still won't be able to use compositing with AIGLX, since the required driver extensions are not implemented in all DRI drivers.
Also, rendering on a shitty VIA chipset with shared memory and experimental flaky drivers (what else would you call a chip where 3 driver projects exist for and where the developers don't like eachother) don't know what is faster, CPU or "GPU" rendering...
Wait, the required extensions haven't been implemented at all for Via hardware? I thought that it could do compositing if it could handle textures with OpenGL...
(FWIW GPU rendering is faster than CPU rendering on my machine. Unichrome is very low-powered hardware, but for most things it's good enough to get the job done.)
The only plus of the VIA chips are the documentation which are available unofficially. The only problem with it: it's taiwanese english, which means your VIA unichrome card has grammar correction instead of gamma correction on some pages of the specsheet.
LOL, that probably is a big problem. Might explain the crashes with BZFlag.

  • How do I use Time Machine with a NAS drive?

I was hoping to use a USB drive with my new Netgear router to do Time Machine backups, but I have since learned that the router only supports Windows or FAT formatted drives.
Will a NAS drive work with Time Machine?  If so, can someone give me a crash course on how to set one up and use it?
    Thanks!
For the record, I have a Netgear N300 DSL Modem/Router combo, and I'm running 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro.
Here are links to two drives I was looking at:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136745  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822165198

I don't think Time Machine is supported on anything other than Time Capsule. That being said, TM works fine on my WD 2TB MyBookLive NAS. The specs on the one I bought specifically said it would work with TM. Neither one of the links you posted mentioned TM so I would be leary.

  • Anyone tried to use TC with A Nas Drive attached in a windows / Osx enviroment?

    Hello There
I'm interesting to use TC in a windows/osx enviroment where i already have a network ..
At the moment there is a NAs drive 4tb attached to the switcher  and all the windows computers making a backup into this drive..
    So my question is:
I just bought a couple of macs and one TC 3TB..
In fact i want to backup every computer on the network I want to attach the NAs drive to the TC for more space and both windows and osx computeras making the backup into the TC and the NAS drive..
Do you think its going to be slow the network?
does the TC support NAS drives to extend space?
    Any suggestions are welcome
    Aris

I would have not bought the TC as many NAS have time machine extensions you could have just kept using the existing NAS. Anyway..
As long as you setup the TC in bridge.. ie go to internet tab on airport utility select connection sharing.. bridge.. then it will work as a plain switch and WAP.. with internal hard disk. You can plug it in anywhere to the system and it should be fine.. the ports are all gigabit so no slow down there.
does the TC support NAS drives to extend space?
Not 100% sure what you mean by this but no, it doesn't support anything.. there is a USB port on the TC.. but it will not recognise or backup to anything but a usb drive. there is no internal rsync or anything else. The TC is not a NAS. It is a backup device for files stored on the Mac. It is design pure and simple for TM on the Mac.

  • NAS drive recommendations for use with MPB, PS3, APX and time machine?

    Hello,
I am looking to get a 1TB NAS drive and then partition about 400mb for time machine and the other 600mb will basically serve as a media/itunes server.
Wondering what recommendations you have and anything to look for in the product details? Is bittorrent an important feature? usually I just use the client on my computer and save to an external drive but maybe thats inefficient.
I don't need raid, try to keep the cost down
    thanks

Hi Rhett, if you post this in the 'Time Machine' category, you might get faster response and plenty suggestions.
