Using FTP to Mirror hard drives across different platforms

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows of an easy to use program that can mirror 2 external hard drives over the internet securely. My friend and I have been attempting to set up a system where my external is backed up to his computer and his to mine so that both hard drives are identical. He has winxp and I have OSX.
I have done some research and this seems to be the easiest program that I can find:
https://www.foldershare.com/info/aboutFoldershare.php?
However, it states that it only supports g series macs and I am planning to update to an intel based mac in the very near future. (I would have done it already but apple is taking their sweet time updating the mini to c2d!)
I have come across some other programs/applications that claim to do this such as:
http://dirvish.org/
http://www.cis.upenn.edu/%7Ebcpierce/unison/
They all appear to be fairly techie to figure out and/or have week cross platform abilities. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time.

"However, it states that it only supports g series macs"
It should still work on Intel based Macs through the Rosetta translation engine.

You'll need a 2.5" parallel ATA interface hard drive. Most are 5400RPM, forget 7200RPM drives and slower 4200rpm drives.  You don't want a serial ATA (SATA) drive, as that has a different connector and won't work.
One source I've used for drives is Newegg, and their parallel ATA hard drives are at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060000344 2&IsNodeId=1&name=IDE%20Ultra%20ATA100%20%2f%20ATA-6 .  Newegg also has many user comments about the drives. Other sources are OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on ATA on the left) . Look for at least a 3 year warranty.

  • Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • Sharing Hard drives across network

I recently set up my new house's network and set up one macbook to share my 2 external hard drives across the network I have also set it up to share a partition of the internal hard drive. When I look at the shared folders from my other macbook all i can see is the internal partition and my public folder i cannot see either of the external hard drives.
1 is a USB hard drive and the other is a Firewire hard drive
    Any help Much appreciated
    Thank you

Assuming the external hard drive is connected to your computer, you need to open the Sharing preferences and turn on File Sharing and Windows File Sharing. When you do you should have an IP address reported that should be used to access the drive.
The PC will have to then mount the shared drive on the PC, and to do that the drive must be readable on a PC, i.e., formatted MS-DOS. If it's formatted HFS+ for the Mac the the PC will not be able to access the drive without software for that purpose such as MacDrive by Mediafour.

  • If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?

If I were to drag and drop files from an OSX 9 onto an external hard drive (1 TB), assuming there is still plenty of space left, will I be able to use this same external hard drive to back up my iMac (Mountain Lion)?  And would it ask me if I want to initialize (thus erasing it) or eject the hard drive like the OSX 9 did?

I was trying to follow this thread because I was curious about the OS 9 installation - until I realized you have another thread going about the very same subject, albeit with a different subject line.
FWIW: it is best not to double post - things get far too confusing after a while.

  • Auto mounting hard drive across a small home network

    Hi,
How do you setup a Power Mac 6500 running Mac OS 9.1 to automatically mount it's hard drive at startup onto a PowerMac G4 running Mac OSX 10.2.8? I have a small network at home that I'd like to cross-mount hard drives across.
I can mount the volume just fine manually from either machine. I just don't know the GUI or command on 9.1 to do the mounting automatically at startup.
Any ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Ed

Here's the (partial) answer I was looking for.
To go from a remote machine --> 6500, do the following:
    1) Open "Chooser".
    2) Select "Apple Share".
    3) Type in the DNS name of the computer you want to mount onto the 6500 in the box labeled "Server IP Address". If TCP/IP isn't active, then type in the numerical IP address.
    4) When prompted, type in the password for your keychain, and then the account name and password on the remote machine that you want to automount.
    5) Then select the drive (share), or shares, you wish to mount.
    6) To automount at startup, check the box "Allow at Startup".
To get the share on the remote machine to automount at Startup, your keychain must be readable by the AppleShare application at Startup (ie. the "Allow access without warning" box on the keychain should be checked).
To go in the other direction, ie. 6500 --> Remote machine:
To automount the 6500's hard drive onto a G4, one needs to do that configuration on the G4, via NetInfo or launchd, depending upon the version of Mac OSX. These get into UNIX networking commands, which is probably outside the main scope of this forum. I'm working on getting the UNIX boxes configured now. If anyone would like to know the commands, just post back here.
I found out how to use the "Chooser" on Mac OS9.x platforms from p. 68 of the Apple manual "Mac OSX Server: File Services Administration for 10.4 or later".
The Apple Technical Note 1111 on programmatic mounting of shares under AppleShare is also useful.

    Create a concatenated disk set
Increase storage space with a concatenated RAID set (also called “Just a Bunch of Disks” or JBOD). If you need one large disk, but you have only several smaller disks, you can create a concatenated disk set to use several small disks as one large disk.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select one of the disks that you want in the set, and then click RAID.
Click Add (+), and type a name for the RAID set.
Choose a format from the Format pop-up menu. Usually you’ll choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Choose Concatenated Disk Set from the RAID Type pop-up menu.
Drag the disks you want to add to the set to the list on the right.
    Click Create.
    Exerpt from:
Disk Utility 12.x: Create a RAID set - Apple - Support
Note that the biggest CON to concatenated RAID configurations is vulnerability to volume failure. If either disk fails, the whole volume fails. If you choose this option, I would highly recommend backing up your music to a cloud service. There are very cheap per GB/storage, and some of the most reputable actually offer unlimited storage:

  • Can I use a PC's hard drive for Time Machine?

I have upgraded my Apple iBook G4 to Mac OS X Leopard and want to take full advantage of all the applications on the OS. I am wondering if it is possible to use a Microsoft Windows PC's hard drive as the medium upon which Time Machine can use to back up my data. I know that external hard drives will work with Time Machine and so will wireless hard drives, such as Time Capsule.
So, would it work if I was to:
1 - Partition the existing C drive in my PC
2 - Share this partitioned C drive on the Network (my PC has wireless card in-built)
3 - Set up Time Machine to recognise this hard disk as a medium which it can use to back up my data
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but if there is a chance I can use a PC's hard drive, especially when the existing PC is hardly ever used, as something which Time Machine can use, then it would make sense to use that then spend money on an external or wireless hard drive.

No. This is not possible on the PC drive without wiping the drive.
    Requirements to use Time Machine
Time Machine is only available with Leopard (10.5.x)
    1. External FireWire or USB 2.0 drive
    2. Time Capsule
    3. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 or later using File Sharing
    4. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 Server
    5. SAN volume managed by Apple's Xsan file system
A TM drive must be partitioned with either APM (PPC) or GUID (Intel) and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

  • Can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop to use files on the airport?

can this device be used as an external hard drive with a macbook pro laptop and use files on the airport time capsule?

If you mean an AirPort base station other than the Time Capsule, it doesn't have internal storage.
If you mean a Time Capsule, its internal drive can be used for regular file storage but shouldn't be; as with all drives, it'll eventually fail. You're better off using a standalone drive and setting Time Machine to back it up as well.

  • Do I need to format my iPod on Windows to use it as a hard drive on a PC?

I use my iPod on a MacBook with my iTunes library, but now want to ALSO use it as a simple hard drive on my PC for files transfer.
In the Windows explorer, I am told that it is not formatted and I am proposed to format it, which would erase all data on it.
Do I need to format my iPod on Windows to use it as a hard drive on a PC?
(I don not have iTunes installed on that PC currently)
And if I have to format it, will all my music be gone, but can I simply then synch it again on my MacBook with my iTunes library?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

To use the iPod Classic on both the Mac and Windows PC, you need to format it in FAT32 filesystem structure, which both OS can recognise.
Yes, formatting it in FAT32, using iTunes, will erase all music and data in your iPod, but that is no problem if you have all the music in your Mac iTunes library.
    So to do this,
Install the Latest iTunes in your windows PC, run itunes and check that all is in order (you can navigate, play some sample songs in itunes.)
Connect your iPod to the Windows PC, USB 2.0 port (please dont use USB hub with iPod Classic, -my bad personal experience, freezing itunes and windows)
iTunes will pop a windows asking you to reformat it in FAT32 and Restore
Click ok. (HERE there maybe some problem, if your iPod hardisk is not in tiptop condition)
When Restore is complete, eject the iPod
Connect it to your Mac and sync iTunes library.
If you want to use the iPod in Windows as an external hd, you have to set it in Disk Mode.  first then Windows will recognise it as a portable HD.
Good luck! on this big undertaking.
