Using function keys (F1, F2, ...) without needing to hold down the fn key

By default on the Sprout, you need to hold down the "fn" key in order to access the real function keys (F1, F2, F3, ...) instead of the "actions" indicated by the icons on the keys. Normally, there's a BIOS option that lets you change this, so that the F1, F2, F3... function keys work without needing to hold down the "fn" key. E.g. as described in this article:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02035108&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...
However, I don't see this BIOS option in the Sprout's BIOS, which looks quite different than the BIOS in that article.
Is there some way to change the "fn" key behaviour?
    ...Tim...

Hi Streup,
Simple... On the S440 keyboard if you look at the top-left key.. Esc.. You should see a second label "FnLk" - Function Lock.
Press the Fn key and then Esc.  The Fn Key will light up and now the Function Keys are activated.
Repeat the same to get the smart keys back.
Hope this helps

  • Why can't I shut down my MacBook unless I hold down the power key?

    Hi all,
I have had this problem my MacBook Pro using both Leopard and Jaguar. It is a problem when I shut down using either the drop down menu or by the power key menu. It appears to shut down but when I close the lid the "sleep" light comes on and is steady. It isn't actually shutting down because if I don't have the power charger plugged in it will run out of charge.
So, to shut down, I hold the power key down for about 10 seconds.
If it does fall asleep I am unable to awaken it (the sleep light is steady) and have to go through the holding down the power key procedure to shut it down and then use the power key to start it back up.
Am I damaging it by doing this? I have tried the trouble shooting options as described in the manual. I had this problem before and one day it just wouldn't turn on and I had the hard drive replaced.
Thank-you very much for any help!

I have found a solution on another thread that seems to have solved the problem for me. That is, I haven't experienced since, either the double password prompt at wake from sleep or the issue of not being able to shutdown.
The solution requires deleting a preference file that apparently carried over from Tiger in the upgrade to Leopard and which is causing all the problems described. Preference files or .plist files hold configuration preferences and settings generally defined by the user for a particular operating system function. Deleting one of these files will result in the system recreating it on reboot with all settings set to default values, this is a simple way of fixing an incompatible/corrupt preference file.
WARNING: Deleting preference files will reset all configurations for that files associated function. Custom user settings made in the +system preferences>Hardware>Energy Saver+ preference panel will have to be re-configured by the user.

  • HT1310 Even when holding down the option key during the restart, I can't get the flashing file icon to go away

I have tried numerous times to restart my macbook pro to get to the startup manager. And even when holding down the option key, it will just take me back to the flashing file with a question mark in it. If anyone can help, I'd sincerely appreciate it.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I am unable to to upload more than one photo at a time. I have tried to hold down the shift key

I am unable to upload more than one photo.  I have tried to hold down the shift key and highlighting the remaining photos.

If you are using the Internet Explorer (IE) browser than you will only be able to upload one file at a time. This is per browser design by Microsoft. If you want to upload multiple files than use another browser such as Firefox or Chrome.
If you are not using IE and are seeing this issue then please share which OS version and browser version you are using.

  • I created a 2nd library for my husbands music and now I can't find my original library. I did hold down the shift key to open itunes but is still comes up with the new library. What am I doing wrong? I tried several times with no luck. Thank you.

I just got an Ipod Classic recently and downloaded Itunes. Got my music on my Ipod. My husband just got an Ipod Touch. I followed the directions on how to create a 2nd library and was able to load his music onto his Ipod. My problem is now I can not find my original library. I did what the directions said about holding down the shift key while opening Itunes and it still goes to the 2nd library that I created. How do i get my original library to come up? I tried several times with the same results. Please let me know what I need to do to be able to get into either library. Thank You.

Does the original library file still exist on the computer?  Hopefully when creating the new library it was done in a seperate folder as I do not believe iTunes allows for two library files in the same location.

  • How to email multiple contacts with mail in yosemite (holding down the shift key no longer works)?

Does anyone know if it is possible to select multiple contact email addresses simultaneously from the contact list in Yosemite in a similar fashion to what we used to do (hold down the shift key)?  I have tried all the key combinations I can think of and none of them work. The "smart" address is a pain to use (to me at least) and I would have to make so many groups up to do what I use to do with just a few key strokes that I am really frustrated. Thanks for any help.

    Electron Mover,
You can still open the stand alone Contacts App located in your applications folder and then drag and drop your contacts into the "To" field and it will add them. Also As you said.
If you want to select multiple people in the Contacts App,  you can ( Command ) ( Click ) them and then drag and drop them into the "To" field.
You can also place all the contacts into a group in the Contacts App. Then either drag and drop the group name from The Contacts App to the "To" field in Mail or you can start to type out the group name in the "To" field in Mail and from the pop down list select the group name and it will add all the contacts from that group.
If you are willing I encourage you to send them feedback here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html or https://www.apple.com/feedback/mail.html they won't respond but at least they will know your opinion.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

    Query by serial number
Apple's warrenty database will identify the type of Mac you have.  Your serial number is securely sent, but you get only the name of your machine.

  • What is "hold down the option key" to get toolbar back?

I lost the toolbar and had instruction to reset tool bars and controls for windows. I was told to hold down the option key. What is option key?

Reference to the option key was found in the instructions to Reset toolbars and controls from support Mozilla.
Thank you for the info. Pressing the alt key does produce the tool bar temporarily. I can use bookmarks if I act quickly before the toolbar disappears. With your info I will go back and try to get the toolbar back permanently.

  • Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up.

Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up normally. Why do these key fonctions no longer work?

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard.  I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting.  If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

  • My iPhone 4S has crashed 7 times. I hold down the home key and on button to reboot. I tried a restore but has crashed once since. Do I have a faulty phone ?

My new iPhone 4S has crashed 7 times ie the screen does not come back on when I press the home key. I hold down the home key and on button to reboot and it always comes back. I tried a restore but it has crashed once since. Is this right  ? Do I have a faulty phone ? Any suggestions ?

Does the screen come back on if you press the sleep/power button?
Have you tried powering down (hold sleep/power button and swipe red slider) then power back up?  Power cycling sometimes will clear problems.
If neither works, and you can get to an Apple store, have the genius bar folks try it out...they are very good about replacement if faulty.

  • Help! Illustrator duplicates everything on drag, as if I'm holding down the Option key.

I have never had this problem before. Whenever I drag an object, it automatically duplicates the object as if I am holding down the Option key. I can move objects with the arrow keys, but if I drag anything with the mouse, it automatically duplicates it.
Please help as this is impossible to work with. I've restarted the coputer as well as Illustrator multiple times. The issue does not happen in InDesign or Photoshop. Just Illustrator. I'm runnin Mac OSX 10.6.
Thank you in advance for your help.
