Using g3 as an external hard drive
Hi,
I wish to run Finale 2001 but it only works with os9. I was going to partition my external hard drive and install os9 but I am having second thoughts.
1. Is it possible to connect my firewire g3 to my g5 like an external hd and run finale from there,
or should I
2. Go ahead and make a partition and install os9 and Finale on the partition.
Thank you

Mactrix,
You were right on the money. I installed the "classic" application from my 10.3.6 disc and drug all of it's folders to my "os9" partition. Afterwards I selected where os9 would be running in the osx system preferences pane and everything worked like a charm. I could then install Finale for os9 on the "os9" partition.
Don Archibald also helped with my problem. I cut in on one of his conversations and he, like you, was kind enough to help.
Here is the thread.

Thank you again for your help Mactrix

By the way, my brother spent some time in Denmark and had a fantastic time. He said the county was beautiful.

Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup. However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails. And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external. Sort of a catch 22. Any ideas?
Is it a USB hard drive? USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice. Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem. If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time. I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

I am not much of a computer technician. I bought a time capsule thinking I could use this for an external hard drive and keep my MAC hard drive free. Was I mistaken? Once I back everything up on the TC, can I delete everything off of my MAC and then use my TC as my hard drive??
Once I back everything up on the TC, can I delete everything off of my MAC and then use my TC as my hard drive??
TC was designed to backup your Mac. The TC literature is pretty clear about this:
If your Mac's hard drive has a problem....it will sooner or later....you can use your backup on the TC to rebuild your Mac.
But.....if you move all of your data to the TC from your Mac....you only have one version of that data now, and it is on the TC.
Have you thought about what will happen when....not if....the TC has a problem? Since the only version of your important data was on the TC, and the TC has failed......you lose all of your data.....because you have no backup.
A much better plan would be to add a USB or FireWire hard drive and connect it directly to your Mac. Move the data on your Mac over to the hard drive.
Then, the TC will backup both your Mac and the hard drive. So, you have original data on on one drive and backups on another drive.
That would be a minimum backup plan. Most of us have more than one set of backups. -
I need to back up my imac running Tiger (no time machine) so that we can upgrade OS. It is set up for multiple accounts. How do I capture all files in each account using newly purchased USB external hard drive? Thanks!

Or you can simply use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the drive to the backup:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive. -
Can anyone help me figure out how to use my new LaCie external hard drive to import movies from my camcorder into imovie '09? I ran into so many problems last night!! Was up way past my bedtime!
I'll stay in this chat ... I answered in the other one ... I have a Sony digital Handycam ... from years ago. I just got the LaCie and I think I formatted it for only to be used on my Mac ... how should I go about reformatting it to be HFS Extended like you said?

I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme 802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?
You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

Can i use applications from an external hard drive?
Can i use applications from an external hard drive?
Photoshop itself needs to reside inside of it's Applications folder so that it has access to it's Libraries and plugins. So if you are going to attempt to store and run it from an external drive you need to copy the whole Application folder or install it directly to the external drive. Even still I am not 100% positive it will work as I know it still needs to access your Library/Application Support for additional files and licensing.
Why do you want to run Photoshop from an external drive?

Retrieving data from hard-drive - using it as an external hard-drive
Hi, first post here. Really hope you guys can help me out
My mac died over the christmas holidays (the motherboard fried from a water accident) and consequently I cannot get access to all my music and pictures on its hard-drive. I know the hard-drive is still functionable because an employee from a mac reseller store managed to retrieve as essay I desperately needed for it.
What I want to know is how I can remove the hard-drive from the mac and how i can use it as an external hard-drive so I can retrieve all of the information from it into my new laptop - which is a windows I'm ashamed to say (money is tight!). Also, would the fact my new laptop is windows affect whether i can move the data from the mac hard-drive to it?
Hope you can help, I need those pictures!

Here's a video to get your drive out: [Video to get Drive out|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuyi-NWLLz4]. You'll need to go through the the point of removing the EMI shield with the T8. Then put the drive in a a 2.5" SATA enclosure and hook it up to your new notebook.
Good luck to you -GDF -
Back up using time machine and external hard drive
Hello,
I am having a difficult time deciding the best way to back up important documents.
I have:
1TB internal hard drive
3 TB external hard drive and
1TB external hard drive
I currently have about 1TB worth of data to be stored, but that will increase to about 1.5TB once I get a bunch of stuff off the HD camera's hard drive. I would like to keep my internal hard drive somewhat free to keep the computer running fast, but also want to make sure I am properly backed up.
Should I put ALL (or nearly all) of the files on the 3 TB external hard drive, and have time machine back that up and not worry about the rest? I'm a little weary about putting all of the files on one device even if it is backed up by TM.
If I do this, do I need to back up the 3 TB external drive in addition to using TM?
Thanks!iMac11,2

I cannot disconnect from external hard drives because firefox is using the drive. I really don't like this. Aside from being intrusive and inconvenient it seems spywarish or just plain data mining.
Try the solution here: [[/questions/768100]] Why does firefox want to use different fonts on mounted hard drives
Move all User fonts in Font Book to Computer fonts.
# Launch Font Book (/Applications/Utilities/)
# Open Font Book > Preferences
# Deselect: "Automatic Font Activation"
# Set the "Default Install Location" for fonts to "Computer"
# Select all User fonts
# Move the selected User fonts to Computer fonts
# Remove all duplicate fonts in Computer fonts -
How to use the ipod as external hard drive???
I went to the windows explorer page and checked under my computer and saw my ipod as the "E" drive. Is the procedure of storing files, be it word or excel or photos as simple as dragging them into the ipod E drive location???
I have tried doing this and they seem to have been copied into the ipod, however when I checked into the ipod they were not there...anywhere. I highlighted the "ipod(E)" drive and created a new folder named "my documents" and then dragged some word files into it. I then detached the ipod from my computer and checked the ipod for the files and the new folder "my documents" and could not find them.
When you use the ipod as an external hard drive are all the documents and files you drag into it hidden???
Is there any way to view word documents?? How do you store them?
When using the ipod, is the only viewable information that comes up onto the ipod screen, info from the "itunes" page??
cheers
ipod 4th generation....20g Windows XP
Windows XPYou can't view any of the files on the iPod while using the iPod. You can only see them through the computer. I guess if you want, you can put the files into the "Notes" folder on the iPod and see them using your iPod, but you can only open .txt files up to 4kb big.

To do this you need a third party program, you can download one here at www.yamipod.com

Using Ipod as a External Hard Drive for Downloading
Hi,
My question is, my computer is older and does not have a lot of storage space (18 GB). I would like to know if it is possible to download files (such as videos) from the web onto the Ipod and then using Itunes to play the files.
Any response is greatly appreciated!
Thanks. If all of your existing library is on the iPod, the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. That would allow you to restore anything you'd bought from iTunes. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod2PC Windows Only
iDump Windows Only
SharePod Windows Only
iPodRip Mac & Windows
YamiPod Mac and Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay. -
Can iPhoto and iTunes be used "remotely" on an external hard drive?
For some years I've kept certain documents, photos and videos on an external hard drive as a security measure. The drive is attached via FireWire to my iMac.
When using that material, if I want to add some details to a family history there's no problem and access is made automatically to the necessary Mac writing program, while with photos Preview allows one to view them and make some adjustments. But what if I want to clean up a photo using "Retouch" in iPhoto? Can one move those tools to the hard disk so they are near at hand, rather than moving the photo back to iPhoto on the iMac? Is it a matter of moving certain iPhoto files to the hard disk?
Similarly with short movies that reside in iTunes under "Movies." Can they be moved to the hard disk for ease of access and perhaps a little editing with iMovie? Then what iTunes or iMovie files would be needed?
All help much appreciated . . . FortesCan I move another copy of the iPhoto program from the iMac to the external hard disk so I can use it there? In other words, can one have a second iPhoto -- and if so, how does one go about it?
No and there is no reason to
iPhoto is an application and it must remain in the applications folder as it was originally installed to operate and upgrade correctly
The iPhoto Application accesses its data in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto library can be anywhere - and you can import photos form anywhere into the iPhoto Library
I still am not clear on your question but I believe that you are trying to make a simple process complicated
It may help to take the iPhoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - so you have a better understanding of how iPhoto works

Using Time Machine with External Hard Drive
Hey everyone,
I had a few questions about Time Machine that I hope someone could answer for me.
I bought my first external hard drive in August, the 1 TB WD My Book for Mac and when I set it up, I configured it to Time Machine, and not the WD software.
I have an extensive music collection, which was my main reason for buying the external hard drive in the first place.
Anyway, when I plug in the hard drive and let Time Machine do the back up, I've noticed that it's backing up the same files every single time, and is eating up a lot of space on the hard drive.
Since I am mainly using this drive to store my music, I was wondering if there was an easier way to do things:
-Is there a way to not back up my documents, photos, applications, etc, every single time I plug in my HD?
-Is there an easy way to find my music on the drive? For example, some Time Machine back-ups have different files on them... i.e. my back up from August 10th has certain music files that do not exist on my backup from November 10th, as I deleted them from my computer after they were backed up to the external HD. I'd love to be able to see all of my music in one place, rather different versions of my music folder on different days.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.Hi,
1. Your Time Machine should should do the full backup of your computer just once and then only diffrences between backups - whenever you plug in the drive.
If that's not the case something is misconfigured.
2. You can exclude folders (documents, pictures etc) from being backed up. This is in in Time Machine Options (right bottom corner.
3. The drive is (most likely) indexed by Spotlight. However, provided those are backup files I would advise against browsing and searching them directly. This can damage the backup itself.
4. I cannot work out the exact scenario you are using - but the ideal (proper one) would be to have all your music library on your computer and only backup on your external drive. This you should not have to browse and use until you need to restore files.
5. If you keep your music library solely on the external drive - it should be not in the backup files.
Also such practice is risky as all drives crash sooner or later and you will lose your music.
Best would be to keep all music on the computer and backup onto your external drive.
Or
if the music library is too big for your computer you may keep it externally - but Isuggest you get one of the external hard dirves with RAID1 or higher. This will keep your music safer lest one of the drives packs up.
Let me know if you want me to elaborate on any of the aforementioned.
