Using G4 AGP running Tiger as server

Hi All! I have an old G4 AGP dual 900mhz tower laying around that is running Tiger, is maxxed out with ram and has 2 120 gig HD's. I upgraded to a MBP a few years back and retired the G4 but my iTunes library is increasingly overtaking the HD on the MBP, especially with ATV being used constantly. I have aq home network with Time Capsule/Airport Extreme. My question is can I use the old G4 as a "server" to hold my photo's, large programs (photoshop, etc) and the extensive iTunes library that I have so that the HD on the laptop can be just used for local files that i am working on and not as my media center. How would I go about setting this machine (G4) up to use this way so to utilize the 240 gigs of HD space it has. Do I ned a different OS or is Tiger capable? I no longer have a monitor, keyboard or mouse for this machine, but I did hook it up to the network via ethernet cable into the Time Capsule and was able to access the HD contents via my MBP. I am a complete noob where this is concerned so help is greatly appreciated.

In Sharing on the G4, is Apple Remote Desktop & Remote Apple Events enabled? If not you'll need to temporarily connect Monitor, KB, & mouse to it to enable those & set Access Privliges.

i think you mean for flat file upload,
for flat file upload there are options for the file in application server or in client side, and to run infopackage there is option background,
if we choose background process, we have to use option 'application server',
means the file must be put in server side

XServe Running Tiger, not Server Version?

Can we install the standard (non-server) version of Tiger on an XServe? We use to render video and run video at concerts and are having lots of render crashes under Final Cut as well as some tasks apparantly running in the background which is making full screen live video playback glitch every second or so. Running the same tasks on a tower is fine so we thought it might be OSX Server. Suggestions?

Running Mac OS X client on an XServe certainly isn't supported, but that means you can't turn to Apple for help if something breaks.
There's absolutely nothing in Mac OS X client that says "oh, I'm running on an XServe so I'd better stop right now", and there's nothing in the hardware that says it has to run Mac OS X Server - heck, you can install Linux on an XServe if you really want to, just don't expect Apple to help you afterwards.
You will lose the server-specific features, admin tools, etc., etc., but other than that there is no reason why you can't run Mac OS X client.

SharePoint 2013 - document libraries and newsfeeds are visible when viewed using Internet Explorer running on the server but not from any other machine

On a single Windows 2012 R2 server I have installed SQL 2012 and SharePoint 2013 SP1 with the latest update roll ups. When I remote desktop to the server using the farm and site collection admin account and open page http://server_name_here using
Internet Explorer, I'm able to see newsfeeds and document libraries.
If I connected to a separate Windows 7 machine as the farm and site collection admin account and open page http://server_name_here using Internet Explorer, I'm able to view the SharePoint pages except I cannot see any newsfeeds or document libraries.
There's just blank space where they should be. I have repeated this process on several other machines that are not the server and get the same result on every machine (I've tried other servers, desktops, adding the SharePoint site to the trusted sites list
in IE, even using firefox). I'm using the same account as I did when I logged onto the server directly. Any thoughts as to what's going on?

It is currently set to the default of http://server_name and http://server_name:port_number (the latter is for Central Admin).
When I have access to the server, I have always done so the same way, using http://server_name. This was true when I access it from the desktop of the server itself and when I tried to access it from other desktops and servers (the machines where I had the
issues with the libraries and feeds not showing up). Are there other values I should add?
I have not tried to add http://server_FQDN as we don't plan on using that to access it but if you think it will help I would be happy to add it.

Compiling Apache2 on Tiger (not server)

I've been developing Unix apps for over 17 years. My primary platform was Linux and that's now secondary. My PowerMac Dual running Tiger (not server) is my primary. I disabled the stock Apache 1.3, then downloaded the latest Apache2 code (2.2) compiled it and installed in /usr/local/apache2.

The httpd runs fine, but when I go ahead and enable one of the shared library modules, like mod_ident, it complains with:
httpd: Syntax error on line 54 of /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_deflate.so into server: cannot create object file image or add library

When I ran make install with sudo privileges, I received the following error:
/src/httpd-2.2.2/srclib/apr/libtool --silent --mode=install cp mod_ident.la /usr/local/apache2/modules/
Warning! dlname not found in /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_ident.la.
Assuming installing a .so rather than a libtool archive.
However, when I looked in /usr/local/apache2/modules, there was no shared library called mod_ident.so.
What's really weird, when I compiled and installed PHP, that make procedure did in fact install libphp5.so.
I believe there may be something wrong in my compilation commands or tools with Apache2. I have Fink installed in /sw and its appropriate directories are in my PATH.
Any assistance on how to convert .la files into .so files so as to get a successfully running Apache2 on my Mac.
I need to use the latest code base from Apache2 to develop a new project dependent upon this version.

Is it possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?

Hey All,
Anyone know if it is possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?
I am using SPSS 16 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. A temporary fix right now if I partitioned my hard drive and installed Leopard on some extra space to run SPSS. This is kind of annoying because I only need Leopard to use SPSS. I would rather emulate it so I can listen to iTunes and check my email in SL.
What about Panther? I think I even have a copy of Panther to install in Parallels?
I read somewhere that the EULA restricts OS X from being emulated, which seems odd for Mac users who need to test or use old software. I understand though about emulating OS X on windows machine though. I guess they need to blow off the whole foot than just cut off one toe.

From what I can tell, doing this would be, at best, of dubious legality.
Even so, the popular opinion seems to be that it would take some degree of hacking to pull off a virtual machine running OS X. I think that unless you are willing and able to undertake such a task, your best bet is to stick with a partition running an old version or wait for SPSS to be updated for Snow Leopard.
Although...... I have Parallels 4 (current version is 5) and it has an option, when setting up a new Virtual Machine, to install Mac OS X server (see image linked below). Perhaps if you could get a copy of the server edition of the OS you would have more success?

I have a SharePoint site which I am trying to open in SPD 2010, I am getting the following error(some of my team members are able to open)

These are the ways I tried
1) Earlier I have MS office 32 bit and SPD 32 bit, I uninstalled them and installed both 64 bit versions
2) I uninstalled restarted my machine and installed it again still no use.
3) I installed SPD 2010 Service Pack 2 of 64 bit
4) I uninstalled the SPD 2010 and opened the site—site actions—edit page in SPD , then it asked me to install SPD 2010, then I installed and tried to open the same site, again same error.
How to solve this issue?
I checked permissions also at that site level – I have full control like others. I don’t have access to Central Admin so where else I can check the permission settings?

Please update us SharePoint version

Or you can simply use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the drive to the backup:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Does Anyone Run Arch For Server Use?

I was curious if anyone here uses / recommends Arch Linux for dedicated server use? It seems 'most' people here are Linux enthusiast and run this as their distribution of choice. Has anyone seen or have any comments about loading this on a server or VM and using it reliably as a server like one would say Debian Linux or Slackware Linux? I understand Arch is a rolling release distribution and it's very bleeding edge which kind of impacts how reliable something can be however I've never had Arch Linux crash or do anything dumb however I've not used it massively. Would like to see how others view this topic and such.
Also for my own interests, if you don't use Arch Linux for a server based role, what do you prefer instead?

The main trick is to stay current with the packages and always be careful with updating. I normally keep my config stored on a local backup just so if something does go wrong, I can always get things running again. It took just as long as it would normally take me to do a Debian/Ubuntu setup in all honesty, if not faster.
My advice to you is to install only what you need if you're going to install Arch on a production server. The less packages you have to worry about, the less maintaining you may or may not have to do, if any at all. We're lucky enough to have the announcements page bring up the big changes so that's something to consider.
Honestly I would only recommend using Arch as a server if you know that the web-based software that you're using really doesn't mix well with frozen versions or if you're a developer and working on your own stuff. (Which I currently am) But when they say that it is as stable as you make it, the truth cannot be any more clearer than that.

Photoshop Problems on Leopard (Server Running Tiger)

Hi,
Due to a theft we have just replaced all our machines except for the server, this means that the G5's are running Leopard and the server is running Tiger. My problem is that in photoshop cs3, when I save a file down to our server I'm not able to open it again as photoshop throws up the message:
'Could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop file'
This is happening in 90% of cases and has cost me several days work. Would I need to update my server to Leopard or is there a quick fix.

First off, your profile says something of an incongruity, which is that there is no such thing as an Intel G5:

Now if you said Intel and G5s in your profile I wouldn't be concerned about it, but troubleshooting the Intel and G5 Macs often can require different procedures. Migrating from G5 to Intel also often presents a problem with the Migration Assistent, unless you follow these steps, and perhaps that's where you problem resides:

Flash Player 10.1 beta supports nc.connect("rtmfp:"). a NetConnection connected in this manner can only be used for groups communication (NetStream for multicast and NetGroup) between peers on the local LAN, or for a NetStream that is to receive a pure IP multicast (no P2P or C-S at all). this is covered in the beta ActionScript reference page for NetConnection.connect().
note that this mode can't be used for 1-1 NetStreams, only group NetStreams and NetGroups.
in order for peers in the group to find each other on the local LAN, you must enable LAN peer discovery and add an IP multicast address to the groupspec. when using GroupSpecifier to make the groupspec for joining groups (recommended), that's the "ipMulticastMemberUpdatesEnabled" property and the "addIPMulticastAddress()" method, respectively. for example:

in this example, i specified a group called "com.example.chatapp/mychannel", where P2P multicast and posting are enabled, where peers can discover each other on the local LAN and they use IPv4 multicast address 239.254.254.1 UDP port 30000 to do so.
things get really interesting when you connect to Stratus and enable the group server channel (to get auto bootstrapping) and *also* use LAN peer discovery so that peers on the LAN will be more tightly meshed than they necessarily would through normal group topology evolution.

I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures. Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great. It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself. OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component. If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside - went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures). My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews.

I have G5 tower running Tiger, use Macbook Pro a monitor?

I have G5 tower running Tiger which I no longer use (replaced with 27" iMac) but I keep because it has a couple of old useful PowerMac programs I may need to dip into occasionally. Is it posibble to use my Macbook Pro laptop (Intel Maverick) as a monitor for this unit? I just do not have the space to keep a spare monitor.

It would be easier to hookup both MacBook Pro and PowerMac to a DVI A/B switch and an LCD display, placing the MacBook Pro on the top of the Powermac G5's top surface, and closing its lid. You just need the proper video adapter to DVI for the MacBook Pro. If we know the MacBook Pro x,y model you have in your system profiler and its x,y values, we can tell you what adapters to get.
The PowerMac should have DVI compatible video card.
