Using G4 (OS 10.3) as file storage device

I have an old G4 Mac that I want to use as an external storage device
for my new Mac Mini. The old g4 has a 20 GB hard drive and a second
300 Gig internal hard drive that I added a few years back. Due to the
limitation of the G4, it does not recognize the full 300 Gig capacity,
but that's okay. I know how to "boot" the G4 in Firewire mode, but I
can only "see" the 20 Gig hard drive, not the additional drive that I
added.
I thought I had to change the "startup drive" to the 300 Gig drive, so
I loaded the OS on the 300 Gig drive and chose it as the startup
disk. When I hooked up the Mac Mini again via Firewire, it still
points to the 20 Gig drive.
Anyone now how I can use the 2nd (300 Gig) drive as an additional
storage device for my Mac Mini? I want to place all my music and
photos on the drive and also use is as a "backup" device. Or is this
not possible??
I also tried disconnecting the original hard
drive and rebooted from the 300 GB drive (orginal 20GB nowhere to be
seen by system, as expected). The CPU booted up fine. I re-started
the CPU (holding down the T to get the Firewire connection). Instead
of booting up with the Firewire "logo", the system shuts down. It
works fine as a CPU, I just can't get it to boot up in Firewire mode.
Any suggestions? Anyone?

Put the 300GB drive into the position on the ATA cable where the 20GB drive used to be with the same master/slave jumper setting. FireWire Target Disk mode only connects to an ATA drive on ATA bus 0; if there's nothing at that location, the computer will shut down instead of going into the mode.

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

  • Using an old iPod as a mass storage device...

    Hey there!
    So, here's my dilema:
My (almost-3-year-old) iBook died on me 4 weeks ago. The logic board bit the dust and it's not covered by that 3 year logic board replacement program that Apple set up. So they (official Apple service centre here in London) want to charge me £728.50 to replace the logic board when a brand new MacBook would cost me £740.00. (If I could afford to fix the logic board I'd just buy a new MacBook!!!)
Anyways, that gripe is going into another forum...
Sooooooo.... I have an old Version 3 iPod that I want to use as a mass storage device but in a PC-based environment. So, if I re-format it for PC is it recogniseable/useable with Macs as a storage device still?
I know that PCs don't recognise Mac stuff but, and correct me if I'm wrong, I remember something about Macs recognising PC stuff??
    So here's an example:
    * I want to reformat my old V3 iPod into a Windows environment.
    * I then want to take my newly re-formatted V3 iPod (set for disk use only) and use it to back up stuff (files, documents, MP3s) from my old, broken iBook (take it from the hard drive).
    * Then I want to take those files, documents and MP3s and put them onto a new, Windows-based laptop (which I am yet to aquire).
    Is this do-able?
    Thanks peoples!

" I know that PCs don't recognise Mac stuff but, and correct me if I'm wrong, I remember something about Macs recognising PC stuff??"
An iPod formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. There are third party helper programs to overcome that, however Macs can read Windows formatted drives so you should be able to use your old iPod as a straightforward removable drive without any problem.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to both wirelessly back up 2 Macs and as a file storage device that both Macs can access wirelessly?

In a perfect world I’d like to be able to download movies and music to my computer, both through iTunes and other ways, but rather than transfer everything to a portable hard drive and then plug the hard drive into a media box to get it on the TV, simply be able to wirelessly move it to the TV, or in the case of music the airport express or some such system.
I’d even like to take this one step further and have a central drive that the home computers are networked to, or at least can access files from (wirelessly), have it backed up to the cloud, and have it be the ‘hub’ for files, music and video.
Can Time Capsule serve this purpose?

Can Time Capsule serve this purpose?
    No .. it cannot.
    Here is why.
The TC can be pressed into service.. it is not designed for it.. and in fact is really poor mainly due to no backup..
You can plug in a USB drive which is slow but does work fine for wireless access.. ie wireless is even slower than the slow disk.
    Take the following into account.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
A much better albeit slower device is the WD MyCloud.
It has no inbuilt wireless but you will just plug it into your wireless router.. hence wireless access.
You should still not use it to store iphoto library.
And the idea of streaming wireless from a central store basically is not going to work. Wireless networking is too slow, and has many limitations.
Buy a Mini and use that as a HTPC or media computer and use it plugged directly into the TV.

  • Using Blackberry as a Mass Storage Device is not working at all. Please advise

It does not show up in My computer. It shows up in the device managers under Universal Serial Bus Controllers as
Blackberry Smartphone I would like to be able to have access to my media card without  having to use my storage card reader.I went to computer management to see if it is a drive mapping issue, but it does not even show up there so there is no letter to assign.
I have made sure that The media card is formatted.
    I have a Blackberry 8310
    v4.5.0.81
Media Support is set to ON
    Mass Storage Mode is ON
and Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected is set to YES
It is a 4GB sandisk micro sd
    The bberry is not locked.
    Encryption mode is not enabled.
I do not have Acronis installed or an Iso mounters to cause any conflicts.
I am not using any network drivers.
Nothing else in plugged into any of the other ports
There are only two on my laptop and I have tried both usb ports.
It is plugged directly to a usb port and not into a hub.
My Computer's OS is XP Pro SP3
Also to reiterate, I am able to take the card out of the bberry and read it no problem through a card reader, but
that is annoying since you are supposed to be able to use see the blackberry as a mass storage device through
    explorer.
And just recently as a test,I tried plugging in another blackberry, a 8800 and that one popped up no problem as a removable device in my computer. What I do not get is why Roxio Media Manager can see the 8310 and copy files over and the device manager has it listed as a smart phone under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers list. This is bizarre.

Hi and welcome to the forums!
GREAT FIRST POST!! Very clear and specific. You don't know how rare that is
Is the laptop in a docking bay?
Content "encryption" meaning Content protection is turned off, right?
Are you able to backup and sync with the Desktop software?
Do you have the correct folders on the card?
Blackberry, music, ringtones, pictures, videos, voice notes?
    (blackberry has to be first).
Last one, how did you format the card?
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to use an Apple Time Capsule simply as a network attached storage device on my existing (non-Apple) network (without using it to create or extend a WiFi network)?

My netowrk is working fine, but I would like to use the Time Capsule simply as a storage device for backups, etc.

Plug into the TC with ethernet.. although you can do it by wireless if you need to..
In the airport utility change the network tab from DHCP + NAT to Off (bridge mode).
That is from v6 utility in the Mac.. different for v5 utility in windows if that is what you use.
with the TC in bridge it is just a dumb switch and AP on the network.. plus a network hard disk.
If you are using it just for backups that is fine.. but remember the TC is not a real NAS.. storing files on the TC is fraught.. because it has no way to back itself up and Time Machine cannot backup the TC.

  • Mass Storage device question

I have an old blackberry 8320 and I am trying to retrieve the pictures memos, and contacts off the phones hard drive,
I have installed the black berry desktop manager and it is able to to detect the phone but every time I got into media manager  I get and error message  "A Problem occurred awhile trying to connect to your device". I assumed the easiest course of action would be to use the phone as a mass media storage device to no avail, with
    "please insert disk"
I am unclear if these methods are only to transfer the files from the  SD card in the phone. All the files are saved on the phones hard drive and I was unable to insert an SD card into the phone as I believe the SD slot may be damaged
Does MAss Media storage mode acess the phone's hard drive or the sd card in the phone and if it does how do i retive the pictures and memos and files off the phone.

    Hi
Did you download the right drivers for the right notebook series???
The Satellite P100-10P belongs to the PSPAGE series.
I think you should check the Toshiba forum page again and be 100% sure that you have downloaded and installed all available drivers!!!
I think you should check if you have installed also the Texas Instruments Flash Media driver.
Last but not least the installation instruction was placed on the page.
Please follow the guide lines and install the drivers in the right installation order!

  • Does Windows have some APIs which can let an application access an LBA in a storage device directly

The Windows users perform operations in the file level, for example, create a file, read data from a file, write data to a file, and so on.
However, a storage device only understands the LBA (logic block address). It can only write data to LBAs or read data from LBAs.
I think it is the Operating System (and File System) which converts those file-level operations into LBA-level operations.
Is there any APIs in Windows that the users can use to access the LBA in an storage device directly?

  • External Hard Drive--Storage Device/Time Machine

I recently purchased an external hard drive compatible with Time Machine.  I understand this application serves as a backup system.  I am beginning my first year of teaching this fall and also need to keep a few copies of all of my teaching materials.  Can I still use the external hard drive as a storage device (more like a flash drive)?  How do I go about this and use it for both?  Or should I just use it more like a flash drive for the purpose of keeping copies of my teaching material?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. You can use the external drive to make Time Machine backups and to store other data. The only thing you have to do is to create two partitions on the external drive through Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
After doing this, you will have to use one partition for Time Machine, and another one to store your files. It's important to make Time Machine backups, as they allow you to restore the whole system if the hard drive fails. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

  • Nano doesnt charge, registers as mass storage device

Okay, i bought a Nano a few days ago, filled it with music, and played and played it. The battery was low, so i hooked it back up to my computer, using the supplied usb 2.0 cable, only to find out it does not seem to charge my ipod. Yes i have usb 2.0, its an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, months old. And yes i have done everything Apple Recommends, as have others. But doing some supersleuthing i did discover this.
My computer is only recognizing my ipod as a "USB mass storage device" BUT when i first plug it in and it says "DO NOT DISCONNECT" it DOES charge. And my computer reads it as
    USB Mass Storage Device
    -Apple Ipod USB Device
    -Generic Volume I:
But once that DND screen goes away it goes back to USB Mass and only that, no way to expand it. THis i believe is the bulk of the problem....why it is causing it i dont know?
Is it a Drive issue based with the ipod? The computer? IS there a USB driver mucking it up? Anything i can try that anyone has come across?
Any help is MUCH appreciated...i only ask so i dont have to shell out another 30 dollars for a wall jack....accessory my ***!

In the left hand panel of iTunes, click the eject icon next to your nano. This should remove the Do not disconnect message.
If that doesn't work then also try this.
I don't have iTunes at work. When I plug my nano in to charge there, I get the Do Not Disconnect message on the screen. Go into My Computer, find your device (removable drive) right-click on it and Eject. The main menu should display on the screen. Turn off the iPod to get the full screen battery icon.
Your iPod will not charge if you use the Safely Remove Hardware (Stop Mass Storage device). So only stop it once it is done charging.

  • Can I use one 2tb external hard drive for time capsule and file storage?

I would like to use time capsule, but also keep the hard drive on my desktop for file storage. Can I do this?

    Apple advises against doing that.
Any data stored on the disk that Time Machine is backing up to can not be backed up.
Plus the data outside of the Time Machine backup database cause problems when Time Machine starts cleaned up old backups to recover space for new backups.
For these reason it is advised that the Time Capsule disk be used for one or the other but not both.

  • Azure File Storage - Creating a directory at the root level using REST

I have a Xamarin / iOS project, and looking to use Azure File Share as a back-end.
With that in mind, I'm playing around with the REST API and have generally got things working with (a) Blobs and (b) Account-level access to Files.
Specifically, I can successfully request a list of File Shares, so I have the general call structure worked out.
However, I'm stumped about the exact incantation necessary to create a new directory at the root level of a share.
I've tried the following three variants, but all result in Forbidden - Server failed to authenticate the request
    request.Host: myaccount.file.core.windows.net
    request.AbsolutePath: /myshare/subdirname1
    request.Query: ?restype=directory
    string to sign: PUT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nx-ms-date:Sun, 30 Nov 2014 16:07:25 GMT\nx-ms-version:2014-02-14\n/myaccount/myshare/subdirname1\nrestype:directory

I did note that trying to get the contents of an (empty) root directory doesn't behave quite the way I'd expect

Authenticates OK, but generates FAILURE BadRequest - The requested URI does not represent any resource on the server.
Which is different behaviour from pulling the list of blobs from an empty container (returns 200 with an empty xml list of blobs.
I've been through the File Service REST API document (dn167006) and found the azurestoragesamples on codeplex, but the former is unclear on working with the root level and the latter is from 2011 and predates File Storage.
    Any insights?

First, thank you for the quick response and the suggestion about looking at the response content for the string to sign being used. I wasn't aware of that and obviously it's a fantastic resource for figuring this kind of stuff out.
And what it immediately revealed is it wasn't some subtle oddity in my construction of the STS, it was that I was doing a client.GetAsync(...) and not a client.PutAsync(...). DOH!
With that sorted, it was trivial to fix.
In terms of the List Directories and Files, though, there's still a problem.
FAILURE BadRequest - The requested URI does not represent any resource on the server.
       request.Host: myaccount.file.core.windows.net
       request.AbsolutePath: /myshare

    The response XML is

        <UriPath>/myshare</UriPath>
    </Error>
I originally thought it might be because the share was empty. However, I'm targeting the same share in which I created (apparently successfully) the subdirectory.
So I'm still confuzzled on that.

  • I am a school administrator. I want to know if anyone knows how to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device for individual student work files  that are only accessible to the student or teacher?

I need to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device. I want the student to do work on the iPad , then save it securely on the hard drive, then be able to go back and get the file and continue working on it. Can this be done?

We use google apps for education with the google drive ipad app
The google drive editor is basic.   But it meets our needs.   Students go to the app called "google drive".  They logon and start a document on an iPad and then edit again using almost any device anywhere(home or school): ipad, windows7, mac, android.
We setup each student account with folders for each teacher.  Students can move documents into their teacher folder, and then the teacher can edit in real time with the studnet.   It's like a multi player editor.
There's no quick fix to allow students using ipads to save work, then revise alone or with the help of a teacher.
You could also use skydrive, dropbox, or filebrowser, but the ability of ipad apps to edit and save revisions is spotty.  It depends if that app developer has added support.  You can see your MS Word doc files with those tools, but I don't know if you can edit the DOCX file, then save back to DOCX  files.

the Wifi storage options are interesting but it seems they only allow to read files from the device on the iPad but not transfer files to the storage device via WiFi.
I'm looking for a possibility to use the iPad for photography while traveling, without the access to a computer.
Shooting photo's in RAW format crates pretty big files that will fill up the iPad's memory pretty fast if you shoot a lot during a (let's say) month long trip.
my idea was to use load the photo's to the iPad so i could view them and sort out any bad ones. then copy them over to the storage device so i can continue using my CF cards for shooting. I have an image thank for copying the photo's directly to the HDD but it would be so sweet to be able to check them on the iPad before hand.
    any suggestions?

Check out pogo plug device, it allows you to upload camera roll via wifi.
