Using garageband as a sampler

Is there anyway to use garageband as a Sampler?
what equipment is going to be needed?
Also i am trying to record my bass into garageband
do i need a usb audio interface?

do i need a usb audio interface?
maybe. before you spend any real money, buy a cheap ($5) adaptor to plug your 1/4" guitar cable into the 1/8" jack on your Mac. Then decide of the sound you get is acceptable to you.

All the Drum Kits available for GarageBand are mixed in stereo.
Logic provides the same 18 Drum Kits also as "Producer Kits", which are multi-track outputs,. Each Drum Kit Piece (Kick, Snare, HH, etc) and also room mice and overheads are routed to individual channel strips.
Here is a screenshot of one Drum Kit in Logic Pro X with individual Channels Strips. Each Channel Strip can be loaded with individual effects (compressor) and adduced with individual sends, etc.
What that means is that all the Drummers are professionally recorded and sampled with individual mics. The Stereo Drums Kits are just "stereo mix-downs" for easier handling and less CPU demand. I explain all the details about the Drummer ecosystem in my graphically enhanced manual "GarageBand X - How it Works"
    Hope that helps

If you want to listen to the sounds of your drum set, you should use an audio cable and connect it to the computer's line-in, then create a real instrument track.
If you use a Midi/USB interface, you'll have to create a software instrument track and select one of GB's drumsets as the instrument. Hopefully your drumset's midi notes are mapped to the right sounds in GB.

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

  • Can I Use GarageBand 09 On My 2005 Power Mac?

I have an older G5 Power Mac, purchased in June 2005.
I just bought a copy of iLife 09 because GarageBand is very user-friendly when it comes to recording podcasts.
    But...
The Power Mac G5 currently has OS 10.4.? on it, and iLife 09 requires at least OS 10.5.6. I don't even know if I can install OS 10.5 on a Power Mac purchased in June 2005.
I just want to give some folks an EASY way to record their podcasts. (They read printed publications top the blind.)
If you can tell me how to get GarageBand 09 running on this Mac... or suggest a way to make MP3s that is just as easy... I would appreciate it!
(I have tried to use GarageBand 2, which is on this computer, to do the same thing, but it only seems to export AIFF files to iTunes. I personally know how to convert the AIFF files to MP3s, but there are too many steps at this point, and the older volunteers are going to get confused.)

Is there a special version of Mac OS 10.5 that has to be installed on the Power Mac?
I put an old 10.5 disc in the drive, and it said it could not be installed. I didn't know if the computer wouldn't accept 10.5, or if it would not accept 10.5 that was from an Intel-based Mac.

I teach music and are using Garageband. I need to find away were my students that are working on a project can export the files and save them somewhere, so when they 7 days later open Garage band can import there song with all the correct  midi-tracks. When I export the song to Icloud the song become an Mp4 file (I think).  And I can import the files via Icloude.
This is because too many times the song has been sabotages during the week

    Dan,
your students could store their projects in iCloud, only you would continously have to change the AppleIDs of the iPads, so each student could store the songs with their own AppleID.  I don't think this will be feasable.
The other possibility would be to share the projects to iTunes and to download them to iTunes  on a Mac at the end of each lesson. Does your school have Macs? This will not work with PCs.

With the updates came iTunes 11.1.1 and Quicktime 7.6.6. I am still using Garageband 2008 and iPhoto 2008. When I create music in Garageband I usually adjust the volume and save it. Even now when I share the Garageband created files with iTunes 11.1.1, the volime I previously set in Garageband is retained. However, when I use the music to create a slide show in iPhoto 2008 and export to Quicktime 7.6.6, the volume level I previously set is lost and seems to default to a low level. The problem seems to be either in the slide show export from iPhoto 2008 to Quicktime 7.6.6 or in Quicktime itself. Is there a work around, so that I can retain the volume level I had previously set in Garageband, a volume level that seems to transfer without problem to the new iTunes. But then iPhoto 2008 (slide show) possibly or Quicktime 7.6.6 do not cooperate. Before I did the upgrade to Snow Leopard, the new iTunes and Quicktime I had no problems with the set volume being retained in the old Quicktime. The reason I need control over the volume is that all these music files are uploaded to YouTube.

  • Using Garageband and I cannot hear previously recorded tracks on headphones.  Prefs are set to output on EMU0404 my audio device - this did work but now is not working.

I am using Garageband and I cannot hear the previously recorded tracks on my headphones.  I am using an audio input/output device, EMU0404 - this was previously working fine but stopped.  All cables check out OK and so does the unit - I have updated to the latest version of Garageband but this did not help.  Any suggestion?

    Hi Christoph,
I cannot see anything wrong with the EMU0404.  This is what puzzels me ... Garageband looks OK - headphones are OK - EMU looks OK.
    Thanks anyway

As I said - look whether your original file is damaged or not. If not, I wouldn't change it and find out what in your system makes it sound like it's clipping.
Good sound file, with volume maxed out. No need to change anything.
The same song clipped - no chance to repair.

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • I keep loosing absolutely ALL sound from my mac using Garageband

I am just trying to create 1 track, something very simple nothing fancy...
I am only using Garageband NOTHING else is running, but from the start the track is orange, anyways I try to trim the length a little and in a few minutes I get that message that says something like too many vocals or instruments.
I loose all my sound, I try internet, itunes and the Garageband and get no sound what so ever!
The only way to get sound back on my mac is if i restart it or shut it down completely which is very annoying.
By the way once I loose sound in Garageband if I hit the space bar for the track to play I get a weird clicking sound, like if I were double clicking on my pad even though I am not touching the pad at all.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

Yup, me too. This has been happening ever since I got MB 1.5 year ago. No fix yet.

  • I have an 11" Macbook Air. When I use Garageband it opens in a window so large that the bottom corner is not accessible so I can't decrease the window so that I can see the top and bottom of the window at the same time. Any suggestions?

When I use Garageband the window is so large that I can't reach the bottom corner to decrease the window to fit inside the display so that I can see the top and bottom of the window at the same time.
    Any suggestions?

You can reduce the window by grabbing any edge or corner.   You don't have to use the bottom right anymore.
You could also temporarily move the dock to the left/right so you can reach the bottom.

  • I am using GarageBand on my iPad 3

I am using GarageBand on all my devices (iPad 3, iMac - Lion 10.7- & iPhone 4). I produced a sond on my ipad3, saved it, renamed it and saved it again and now it won't open, share to iTunes, Facebook or iCloud. It just in "render" mode. I have plenty of memory on my iPad and computer . What is the  cause and remedy?  Thank you

I have this exact issue.  However, I tried the Loopy app after after GB crashed and received an error message saying that core audio is not available.  Rebooting resolves but the problem repeats.  Any suggestions as to fixes?  Btw; I have no such problem with Ipad 2 and ios 7.

  • Do I have to use GarageBand's templates?

    Hi.
I want to use GarageBand to create podcasts, but do I have to use their templates for design? I have a website already and GarageBand's templates, though nice, don't match. Can I create my podcast files and store them on my own server, and use a link that GarageBand generates to submit to the iTunes directory? And if I have a link on my page that asks you to subscribe to the URL that GarageBand creats (in the Subscribe button) will that work?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Oh, sorry. Yes, I was referring to the iWeb templates.
So far I've been saving to disk (and of course, iWeb publishes all of the websites that I've made, and some of them are photoshoots with a lot of images...takes a long time), but the folder structure is different from the navigation that I have on my website, so I have to do some mods to my server structure.
Including the RSS code is a little hairy, but I think I've got it figured out. I'll keep experimenting.
