Using Garageband to record soundtrack for iMovie

Here's a noob question....
I want to record a musical performance using imovie and Garageband (with audio interface). How do I effectively put the audio recording together with the video portion of the performance, that way, there is a good digital recording of the performance synced with the video portion....

"Recording in iMovie" means using your internal camera or an iSight - is that what you want to do? Or do you want to use a video cam?
The reason I'm asking: I'm not sure if iMovie can record through the internal mic while GB is using the USB or Firewire port - plus it's quite a load on the computer to do these two recordings at once. But anyway - it's pretty easy to align sounds in iMovie. If you record the video silent, make sure you have a video/audio sync signal like clapping your hands. If you have audio on your video track, it's very easy to sync the recordings - nudge the track with the GB audio until the reverb effect vanishes.

  • How to use Garageband to record interview

We want to record an older relative talking about family history, and people have recommended using Garageband.    I have it on my iPhone 5 but wonder exactlly how to use it.  Has anyone done this?  I have tried recording myself with the microphone icon but have not been able to find the recording or to play anything back.

    Hi tingold1,
GarageBand on your iPhone is one way to record your interviews, particularly if you want to be able to do a lot of editing on the resulting sound file. See this page for an introduction to GarageBand -

Anoterh application which can do simple sound recording is Voice Memo. See the iPhone manual for assistance with this -

  • Using an External Hard Drive for iMovie Editing and Burning to DVD

Between iPhoto, iTunes and other applications I am rapidly running out of hard drive space on my 2003 iMac. Because of this, I recently purchased a Lacie 250 GB Firewire external hard drive and was hoping to use it for iMovie editing and buring of DVDs, because of the large amount of disk drive space video eats up. Is it it possible to "load" iMovie and iDVD to the external drive and edit/burn videos on that drive? If not, is there some other way to use that external drive in this process? Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

see my reply to Trollus, just posted:
That's how I do all my stuff now - via external lacie 'brick' drive. The only trick is when you begin your iMovie project, hit save immediately after creating the new project, and save the project file in an appropriately named folder on the external hard drive (don't call it 'Movies' as it'll be confused with your Powerbook's movies folder). Then as you import all your clips from your movie camera, they will be written to the external drive, rather than you G4's drive. Very handy.
I do all my iMovie and iDVD stuff via the external Lacie drive - the FireWire 400 interface is quick enough (ie never had skipped clips, etc). I also save all iDVD finished projects as disc images on the external drive and burn DVDs from those at slow speed via Disc Utility. No coasters...:-)

  • Can I use GarageBand to record live from an external soundboard?

My Church Band uses a sound board to play, and have asked me to do a video of the next performance. I want to capture the sound, using the band's soundboard. I can hook that up to my MacBook Air via USB cable. But then what do I do? How do I pipe the music into BG, and record at the same time?
Thanx, I really appreciate ANY help!
    Jamie

Sounds like the soundboard has a usb output, depending on the brand you may need to download some drivers. Then in garageband you will need to choose the soundboard in GarageBand > Preferences > audio midi and choose it for input. Start a real instrument stereo track and you're ready to record.
This is a little over simplified but you can find tutorials under the help menu in garageband or on youtube.

  • Use remote to record audio on macbook

I need to record audio to my 15" Macbook Pro (2010). I will be using Mic In / Line In jack to record audio. (Audio is coming from a mixer, which will have wireless mic connected).
I just want to know, is there anyway I can use Macbook remote to start / stop audio recording?
I am thinking of using Garageband to record audio, because it seems to be good enough quality - but I can switch to another app if it allows me to start / stop through Apple Remote - OR - through my iPhone 4S?

That's a tough one to answer without more information. Does it have drivers that you can install to make it recognized by the computer? If you plug it in via firewire and your Mac recognizes it as a camera, but it does not show up as an audio device Logic, my guess would be that yoiu can't use it as an audio device.
Does it say anything about that in the manual? Does it show up as an audio device when you select Sound from your Mac's System Prefs?

I'm new using Logic, i've been using garageband for quite awhile now though but my question is just basic. When i want to record electric guitar while clicking the software option it brings me to alot of guitar sounds that i want to chose. I chose the twangy electric or the distorted strat but i only hear clean sounds. No matter what kind of guitar sound i chose in the library it only produces clean guitar. How can i make it sound like it supposed to? Did i miss something i should do?

This definitely has me stumped as I'm unsure as to why your guitar can be heard, but with none of the channel strips plugins applied to the sound.
On the record enabled channel strip that contains your guitar input, is the "I" button located near the "R" active? Also, if you record your guitar, can you hear the FX applied to it when you play back the recorded track?

  • I'm using GarageBand for voiceover and my voice is only recording in one track. How do I get it in stereo?

I'm using a Bluebird mic hooked up to speakers and MAudio Fast Track interface.  I went to GarageBand preferences and set up the recording for MAudio and stereo but it's still recording in mono.  Any suggestions?

  • Record Keyboard MIDI using GarageBand for iPad

See this video using GB4iPad to record keyboard MIDI:-
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQlbjFxdxGE

I just discovered the arpeggiator feature today, and indeed, as gb 1111 mentioned, it doesn't work via MIDI input!!!! An incredible oversight! Perhaps an option to allow this can be added in an update, Apple?
I am forwarding gb 1111's concern to the GarageBand for iPad feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/garageband_ipad.html. Let's all do the same, in the hope of further improvements and refinements to GarageBand for iPad by Apple!

  • Garageband or Soundtrack for recording guitar.

    Hello.
I've ben using GB to record audio, specifically acoustic guitar, just a few tracks, and was wondering if I would gain much in terms of actual audio quality if I decided to take a stab and learn basics of STP?
Just poking around the STP interface has my head spinning, but I think I see how it basically works.
    Your thoughts?
    Jonathan

    Thanks NLEdit.
I've heard good things about Logic. But since Soundtrack came bundled with FC, I thought I'd give that a shot. Good to know that it might be better for recording music than GB. I also understand that STP is designed to work with FC, and, well, doing soundtracks, but maybe I can use it in a most basic way.
    We'll see.
    Thanks.

  • Using garageband 09 with imovie 09

    new to imove & garageband
some questions on using garageband 09 with imovie 09...
    - Is there a URL that explains in detail how to use garageband with imove 09 to improve a voice only naration track?
    - Is there a URL that explains in detail each of garage bands effects/audio unit effects on the sound track?
    - is it correct that once you share an imovie to garage band and edit the sound track with garageband you can not "re-share" it back to imovie for video editing?
    - in post production, I am use to doing the following for sound track:
noise reduction, compression/expansion/limiting, equalization, normalize to -1dB.
Some have garage band effects have corresponding names, like compression. But, is there a noise reduction?
    Thanks
    Bob

    This might be helpful: http://comtechlab.iupui.edu/tutorialsfolder/tutorials.html
No URL that explains the effects in depth to my knowledge, maybe one of the books, like Missing Manual or the Apple Certified when it comes out.
Some high level info here: http://www.thegaragedoor.com/index.html
Correct, there is no round trip editing. However, you should be able to import the completed movie back into iMovie as a new event and then bring it into a project.
Not sure there is noise reduction.

  • Recording Podcast / Using Garageband on Macbook Air

    Hi guys,
Quick computer question, I currently record my podcast on a Macbook Pro - 2010 model - 2.4Ghz intel core 2 duo processor, 8GB RAM, NVIDOA GeFore 320 256MB.
I've been offered a chance to upgrade to a current MacBook Air at work. I'd quite like an Air as I carry my computer around, etc. I record using Garageband and a USB microphone, but I've had some issues with the system crashing in the past.
Would a current MacBook Air be OK to record and edit podcasts on? If so, which current model would be best suited to this?
Sorry if this a really obvious question, I just want to make sure I make the right choice!

I've been offered a chance to upgrade to a current MacBook Air at work.
A new MacBookAir with Mavericks will come with the current GarageBand 10.0 version and not GarageBand '11. And unfortunately, GarageBand 10.0 does not support the podcast feature. So be aware, that you will need to find a way to install GarageBand '11 on the new MBA. If you have installer disks for iLife '11 or the system install disks with the bundled iLife applications, create disk images, while you still have a mac with an optical drive. The MBA has no longer a CD/DVD drive.

  • Using GB'08 to create Chapters for iMovie'08 -- audio does not export

After fighting though learning Final Cut Express (oops I mean iMovie '08), I got a movie together. Then I wanted chapters, so I found a great article (http://imovie08.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-add-chapter-markers.html) showing that the only way to make them in a logical way was via GarageBand'08.
However, when I send the movie to iDVD, the audio does not make it (silent when I play the movie - either in preview mode or on the burned disc). Furthermore, I tried to "Export Movie to Disk" to see if GB was not outputting or if it was an iDVD issue of receiving. I found that the export also came over with no audio.
    Please advise!

I am having the same exact problem. I have Final Cut Pro on my production computer at work, but I wanted to do some personal stuff at home on my MB Pro. I have like 15 old family 8mm home videos that I want to convert to DVD's for my parents for Christmas, so I used some of my hardware for A to D conversion to get these marathon 2 hour movies on my ext. Hard Drive. But of course you can't make chapter markers in the new iMovie '08, so I have to export to "media browser" and then switch to GarageBand to do this simple task. But unfortunately when I "share" from GarageBand to iDVD, disk, or even iTunes I get absolutely no audio. Ridiculous.
Not to mention the fact that these home videos are two hours long and it takes a freakin hour for it to compress/export just to find out there's an issue. And even before I realized there was no audio, I was having an amazingly awesome time in iDVD as it was lagging so badly that I considered putting my TV on to pass the time while I clicked and held on one of the folders waiting for it to highlight so I could move it. Then it was great to find out that all that time I spent in iDVD was in vain because there was no audio on the movies anyways!!!! yaaayyyy!!!
Obviously other people have presented this same GarageBand movie sharing audio issue and have received no good solutions as of yet, so I don't even know why I'm here posting this. It's 4:00 AM, and I've been fussing with this crap for over 8 hours now. I'm just going to do it all at work on more capable software (Final Cut, DVD Studio).
I just figured that I didn't have to do anything special to these home-videos editing-wise, why not just take advantage of my "cool" new iLife software? And do it on my spare time at home? Why not? Because they've made iLife so retard-proof that it's self destructing before my very tired eyes.
    iLife? more like cryLife.

  • Conversion of VHS for iMovie use

Have some old VHS tapes of kids / wedding etc that I want to convert to DVD. I would also like to be able to use the footage in iMovie to create a couple of family DVDs. Can I use DVDs as a media source for iMovie - someone suggested using Handbrake for ripping the footage but in the FAQ on handbrake it says the output format is perhaps not suitable. Should I just convert the VHS tapes to mini DV and then run them out of my DV camera?

Yes, absolutely you should use your miniDV camcorder. Then you know the files for sure are in the right format. You can either dub from your VHS tapes onto your camcorder, then play that back into the Mac. Or if your camcorder supports pass thru analog to digital conversion, you might be able to do it in one step (i.e. play VHS tape thru camcorder right into the Mac without recording it to DV tape first.
