Using Google Docs to remotely convert documents.

Damn, this is just too cool.
GDD is a Python script that downloads all your Google Docs documents. What's even cooler is the fact that one can specify the conversion format. Which means, doc/docx/odt/rtf will be converted to HTML, xls/xlsx/ods will be converted to CSV (I don't really use spreadsheets, so I don't care) and PPT/PPTX/ODP will be converted to PNG (I hate effects anyways). I have tested it already, and the doc->html conversion works much better than OpenOffice's export functionality! Which means, you don't have to keep any office suite on your box!
I just found this thing and wanted to spread the word, so I didn't investigate it in further details. I mean, there are several things I'd like to figure out:
1) Can Google Docs be used to convert a local file that way? E.g., if I have an HTML file, can I get a .DOC out of Google Docs without running it in a browser?
2) Consequently, can mutt be scripted to perform that kind of conversion on every document attachment and store it with the original e-mail? I guess, one could get Gmail to send all the documents to Google Docs automatically (I think so), but that will end up as a mess.
And I'd probably rewrite the script in shell - just for fun (it could be a nice challenge, since I am currently learning shell scripting).
So, why would one need such a thing? Well, me personally, I only write documents. They are usually not very big, but they need to be done quickly. So, I prefer a text editor to a word processor. Using discount, the awesome Markdown interpreter with lots of extensions, I can get all the formatting features (tables, images, footnotes) I could possibly need from a word processor. However, I can't send documents in HTML, so it would be nice to convert those to DOC (yeah, you can just change the extension and it would work in Word anyways, but still). Finally, from time to time I do get to read spreadsheets or presentations (but I don't have to make them myself), so this functionality is also nice. I am a total geek when it comes to being lightweight, so I was really intrigued to learn about this thing.

Did you find a solution to this? Using gdd I guess one would need to do something like upload input, specify wished format, download output, remove input. Skimming through the readme, gdd did not seem to supported upload, though.
I _think_ this is possible using googlecl (http://code.google.com/p/googlecl/). You can upload the HTML file, then download the DOC pretty easily, or so it seems. Check out some googlecl examples to see what I mean (http://code.google.com/p/googlecl/wiki/ExampleScripts). googlecl is in the AUR, hope this helps.

    I don't understand.  I use Google Docs to write letters & other forms, then convert them to PDFs using Adobe Acrobat.  If Forms Central closes, will I still be able to do this?

    Adobe also has Acrobat.com and there is DropBox.com. Adobe has also announced Adobe Document Cloud.
    Forms central provide a subscription service for users with Reader to create simple forms. Apparently this did not meet a majority of users and with the minimal price difference for Acrobat and free web storage the users were better served without it. I expect cloud services will continue to emerge until providers better and more fully understand the user requirements.

  • Using Google Docs Freezes or goes grayscale and makes me restart

    I'm using a 21in iMac 3.6i5 with 8gb ram. I've had the mac for just over a month and it's frozen like 6 times in the past two days.
    It's only frozen using google docs, though it's gone grayscale and made me restart at least twice without google docs being up, I'm not sure what the issue is but I have to use google docs for work so I'd really like to get this figured out as soon as possible, anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Who Uses Google Docs?

    I just purchased an iPad and am looking at using Google Docs... I also have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro... I am a college student and am interested in the syncing capabilities of Google Docs...
    How efficient is Google Docs? Pluses? Minuses? If you use it currently, would you recommend it? If not, what do you use/recommend?

    Yeah, yeah, yeah ...

  • Anyone able to use Google Docs with Safari?

    In Safari 6, I always get this error when I open any docs:
    https://docs.google.com
    A server error occurred.  Please press 'Reload' in your browser.
    (screenshot: http://d.pr/i/qalj)
    Of course, reloading doesn't work.  Any one else have that problem or know how to fix it?

    Yes. Google drive is proving to be unusable in Safari 6.
    I suspect Safari 6's JavaScript engine is the culprit since I am also running into common HTML forms that won't verify anymore either. ugh...

  • Is it possible to link text from Pages into an InDesign document [as you can with Google docs]?

    In InDesign, you can get a plug-in [word flow] which allows you to link the text in a Google Docs document into an InDesign document, so that you can edit the text in Google Docs [on your computer/tablet etc] and it will update in the InDesign document. Additionally, if you edit the text in teh InDesign docuemnt, the Google Docs file is also updated.
    Is there a plug-in for Pages? Or a way to do this [without ditching Pages and starting to use Google Docs]?
    Thanks

    There are no plugins for Pages for iOS. Period.

  • Firefox 3.6.13 will not open Google Docs on MAC OSX 10.6.6. This is extremely irritating. Is this Apples way of persuading us to use Safari?

    When I try to use '''Google Docs''' I get:
    ''Sorry, but this browser does not support web word-processing.
    Please see our system requirements page for a list of supported browsers. ''
    Another problem is that I can't open web links from '''Tweetdeck'''. Then I get the message:
    ''"A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."''
    I can't use Firefox any more if this continues.

    I can't even force quit Firefox. I'm running MAC OSX10.4.11. Can't shut down computer without hard turn off on back of MAC. When I turn on again, the same frozen Firefox is on the screen. Can't escape this junk. This has happened so often that I may never use Firefox again IF I CAN EVER QUIT out of it.

  • Using CFHTTP to submit a form directly to a google docs form

    Ok so here is some background
    Google has a service where you can create forms using google docs and embed them into your webpage, Results are automatically stored in a google spreadsheet upon submission.
    I want to use my own form to submit to to the google form processing page which I can get to work however the default generic google hosted thank you page appears upon submissing.
    I know you can use cfhttp to submit a form from a coldfusion server so I was thinking that I could simply pass my form variables to a action page that resubmitted them via cfhttp and thus bypass the thank you page altogether
    however when I try this it does not work and the results do not show up in the google spreadsheet. I figured that mabye the google processing page could tell that it was not submitted from a browser so I tired adding a useragent string but still no luck.
    Here is the code I was trying to use
    <cfhttp method="POST" url="https://spreadsheets.google.com/formResponse?key=tlo4FjygqMuUGmvuOb2_Gjw" redirect="yes" useragent="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.2; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0)">
         <cfhttpparam type="Formfield" name="entry.0.single" value="testValue1" >
         <cfhttpparam type="Formfield" name="entry.1.single" value="testValue2" >
    </cfhttp>
    And the online spread sheet can be viewed here
    http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tlo4FjygqMuUGmvuOb2_Gjw&single=true&gid=0 &output=html
    Does anyone know why this is not working?
    To recap I am able to use the following form on my own comptuer to directly submit to the processing page and this works
    <form action="https://spreadsheets.google.com/formResponse?key=tlo4FjygqMuUGmvuOb2_Gjw" method="POST">
    <input type="text" name="entry.0.single" value="" >
    <input type="text" name="entry.1.single" value="">

  • Uploading exported Excel file to Google Docs

    I exported a spreadsheet as an Excel .xls file, but Google won't let me upload it giving me an error:
    We're sorry, but we were unable to upload this document.
    If you have the desktop word processor installed on this computer, there are two other easy ways to bring the file into Google Docs:
    Using the Clipboard
    Open the document in the desktop word processor.
    Type ⌘-A to select the contents of the entire document.
    Type ⌘-C to copy it to the clipboard.
    In Google Docs, create a new document.
    When the Edit window appears, type ⌘-V to paste it in.
    Save as HTML
    Open the document in the desktop word processor.
    Choose File > Save As...
    In the dialog that appears, select Web Page (*.htm; *.html) for the "Save as type."
    Save the file, and make a note of the file name and folder, as you'll need it next.
    In Google Docs, choose Upload again from the main page.
    This time, specify the html file you just made in the desktop word processor.
    Using either of these approaches, you should now have the document open in Google Docs.

    Anyone else have this problem?
    It seems Google doesn't like the Excel version that Numbers exports. The file will open fine in Excel and if I re-save it from Excel it will upload no problem to Google Docs.

  • Inserting/deleting spreadsheet row in Google Docs

    When using Google Docs on an iPhone (or iPod Touch in my case), how does one insert a row at a certain location? There is a function to add a row, but that is only appended at the bottom, even if I've selected another row. I was using the new version of Spreadsheet on a laptop, but I'm not sure what version gets used when I access the document on the iPod Touch.

    Re:  "...now is there any way to..."
    I see "mission creep" ocurring here.
    Your request can get complicated...
      What if the user enters "1,3;xyz,9 44" ?
      You can prevent entries into a textbox, that are not numbers or commas, using the Textbox_KeyPress event.
      You can also clean up the text after entry by removing all non-numbers and dupe commas.
      Then the Split function can be used to separate the entry into row numbers.
      Verification by the user (with a message box) at this point would be wise.
      Each row could then be verified to contain data using Application.WorksheetFunction.CountA.
    Suggest you review the VBA help file for: KeyPress event, Like operator, Split function, Msgbox function and the Excel CountA function; then post a new question.

  • Opening google docs with apple mail

    Hi there
    Anyone worked out away to open an attachment in Apple Mail App using Google Docs? Or will I have to change my mail app or stick with using Gmail in my browser?
    Any hints appreciated
    Cheers

    Google Docs is not an application. It is just a web page. If you want to open a true attachment with Google Docs, you have to upload it. Normally, documents that originate in Google Docs are shared via a link to the document in Google Docs. If you want to open true attachments, you need an application that can handle the data.

  • Bridging Framemaker and Google Docs for team collaboration

    Hello all,
    Our company uses Google docs extensively for all types of documentation.
    As the technical writer, I am the odd one out. Now, management tasked me with finding a way to bridge Framemaker [draft] content with Google docs. The reason is to provide the Engineers with a way to review and edit documents on a OS agnostic (and commonly used) platform.
    Unfortunately, Google docs isn't making this the least bit easy! In particular, Google docs severely limits PDF to gdocs conversion to about 10 pages. Even using Acrobat's Split Document tool (and then splitting the document into many smaller parts), I am still missing many pages!
    This has become a huge dilemma!
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    Thank you

    Well that would be a rather severe punishment. I'm not worried about that.
    I just hate to fail at something. I thought I could find a solution that would involve Google Docs but I am quickly learning that this product is still truly inept, at least in regards to importing documents.
    I am currently experimenting with alternative (non Google) solutions. One alternative is using Adobe Acrobat's Shared Review tool. Except, I cannot figure out what kind of Web Server folder is accepted by Adobe Acrobat. I've trying my own personal webserver (a folder with full permissions), Google Docs folder, Adobe's Creative Cloud storage... everything I tried, resulted in the same error, "The Shared Folder Location provided is not valid. Click OK and check the Status field for more information". I don't even know where the "Status field" is located.
    All this trouble sure illustrates the greatness of Microsoft's Sharepoint server when it was my collaboration tool.

  • Google docs crashes firefox

    Firefox often crashes right after I use Google Docs statistics function (Ctrl-Shift-C) on a text document and then try to close statictics dialog with Enter or mouse click. Seems to happen much more often if the document is large.
    This problem persists with all recent versions of Firefox, but only on Linux. Windows versions not affected. Sometimes Firefox crashes outright, sometimes just stops responding with high processor load, and sometimes it also shows empty dialog window with OK and Cancel buttons.
    Resetting Firefox, disabling add-ons and so on have no effect on crashes.

    Here's how it looks.

    Every time I use Google Docs on my Mac Bk Air, it launches in the 'Mobile version'. I have to then scroll to the bottom to click on 'Desktop', then continue to next page to click on 'Continue to desktop version' to finally get to the desktop version.
    Annoying!
    Is there a way to change a setting somewhere so that Google Docs does not detect the touch-pad on my Mac Bk Air and think its a mobile devise?
    I've tried to ask in Google Groups but no answers or reply.

    On my Mac, my file settings are set this way and I can open them in Windows. See if you notice differences in your settings.
    Correct them if so, and try again.
