Using Graphics for subtitles

This is my first time trying to add subtitles to a DVD SP project so please forgive me.
I'm creating my subtitles as graphic files because I want to add a little more design-wise than just straight text to them. As I understand it, you create them the same way as Overlay files which I have done. They look good in Photoshop but when I put them into the S1 track for my video the are off center and look terrible. My Overlay files for the buttons in the project look great so that is a bit confusing.
The other problem I am having is getting the actual subtitles to show up when the video is playing. I have read the subtitle chapter in the DVD SP manual and looked through this forum and others and I can't figure this out.
What I want to happen is this. On a menu that you access through the main menu you have 3 choices of the video to choose from.
1. Music only version
2. Spanish Language version
3. Subtitle version.
When the user clicks the subtitle version I want the video to play with the subtitle stream turned on. I've tried different setting in the Button, Menu and Track inspector. What am I overlooking?

Sorry for the late replay on this but please see below...
Select the button on your menu that you want to use to show your subtitles with. As standard, in the target drop down box in your inspector you select the track you wish to display. AND then you select the advanced tab (also in the inspector). below the angle and audio drop downs you will see a subtitle drop down - make sure that the sub stream you want to be displayed is selected... Final thing - make sure that the VIEW tick box to the right of the subtitle drop down is delected. This will then force your subtitle stream to be shown only when that button is selected.
Hope this helps?

  • Graphics for Subtitles

I'm trying to figure out how to import some printed music files to use as subtitles in the same way a different language is used. i.e. having a stream of music, rather than text, flow along the bottom of the screen as the music is played. I've made some test PDF files in the correct size but I can't import them directly from a subtitle track. The best I can do is to import them as assets. The problem is that they look dreadful even though the originals are 300 dpi.

Have you ever use a menu Overlay, where you had text that you then colored by setting the Inspector palette four color sliders? You can only set a color and a transparency for four colors. Well, subtitle graphics are limited like that.
For your music I think you would want to open a 72 dpi, life sized version, 720x536, in Photoshop, and change the Mode to Grayscale. When you're happy with how it looks (don't forget about title safe), resize the image to 720x480 and then do a Save As PICT File, 2 bits per pixel.
If you open that PICT in Photoshop I'm hoping that it'll still seem tolerable. Take that into DVDSP and place it in the subtitle track where you want it. Look at the Inspector palette Colors tab, and set the mapping type to Grayscale. Set all four slider colors to the color that you want the solid part of the notes to be. Set the slider positions to 15, 10, 5, and 0.
How does it look? I've tested what I just wrote here, and the results look fine even with thin lined staves. In reality you want to be worrying about interlaced video and things like that, and your notes ought to be thicker than the ones I tested with, and should come out looking better even than my test.
If you want to get the effect of the notes sitting on a semi transparent rectangle, you would have to give up on one of the levels of gray. Your graphic would have a white background, with a mid level gray rectangle where the box is due to be, both in layers behind the notes. You might want to play with the levels on the notes layer, to make sure that the body and the anti aliased edges of the notes come out darker than the mid gray box. Save that out as your 2 bits per pixel PICT and then in DVDSP you would use the third slider to control the transparency of the box, which could be a different color to the notes.
I tried that too, and it was surprisingly successful. If you tried to follow along and ran into trouble, let me have an example PDF and I'll go through the steps and show you what it should have looked like.

  • Trying to use iMovie for subtitles. Possible???

First let me explain my problem and hopefully someone can assist me with my problem:
My friend made a documentary and had someone edit the film on FCP, and then that person added subtitles in DVD Studio Pro. None of those programs I have on my iMac. My friend wanted to change some things and asked me if I could assist and I accepted.
What I did was download a DVD converter to my computer that worked fine. Once I imported the DVD into iMovie we made such changes.
However the problem I'm having is trying to extract subtitles from the actual DVD CD.
So here are my questions if anyone is so nice to help me:
    1. Can anyone offer any legit online, free programs to extract the subtitles?
    2. Should I add the subtitles manually in iMovie?
    3. Can iDVD able me to add a page where you will have the option to watch film with or without subtitles?
    Thank You.

presentation new FW CS3 has CMYK pallete so my question is: can FW
CS3 be used for preparation of graphic for printing or what are the
obstacles? After preparing images in FW I will use InDesign for
text or maybe the text in FW is wector and maybe I could use FW
including text and not to use INDEsign far small projects? Does
anyone has any experience with this subject?

Fireworks does not operate or export in CMYK color space. It
    was
developed for screen images only, and operates and exports in
    RGB color
space. It is not recommended that you use it in preparation
    of images
for print. You mentioned that you don't like photoshop. You
    might like
    Illustrator better.

  • Tips/Hints re: using flash for live title graphics and visualisations

Hi guys, this is my first post. I'm a design student from New Zealand, with a reasonably basic knowledge of flash, I've built a few relatively simple flash sites and applications for example.
I got a job the other day to produce live title graphics for a fashion show, and think flash can do the trick. Before i started i wanted to jump on here and see if you guys know of any interesting tutorials etc that could help me out? computerarts has a few on using live video/sound to create animation. I also need a way to transition pages without a set time, almost a crossfader- as the show is not timed exactly.
Any tips or hints would be much appreciated!!!
    cheers

while thanking u for the tips which were very useful I want to know if i can create batch files for often repeated activites and put them into action from my desktop  ----raj

  • Export graphic for use in Premiere Pro Cs4

Hey everyone, I have made some wiring diagrams in AI CS4 and need to have them apear in a DVD, I have tried several cominations and they are not clear on the video.  My settings are RGB, DV NTSC Widescreen, have exported for Web and Devises and in Tiff & Targa 72 & 300 DPI.  The diagram has text that looks fine in all the stills but in Premiere and the exported video the images look like a poor photo copy.  Thought I'd start here before asking in PPro.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Mmh, differences between versions aside, you are pretty much getting what you are asking. Any compressed format will have a hard time with perependicular lines and lots of high fequency detail (text, the coil spirals). There's really no way to avoid that otehr than to draw thr graphic differently, i.e. not use straight lines and a different way of presenting the text callouts. Also, you could massively improve perception by having the graphic move with a simple slow pan. the motion will lead to a more favorable distribution of the pixels across the scanlines, as the content changes every frame and in addition, motion blur will help to reduce flicker. Lastly, give the graphic some finesse by perhaps making the lines white and adding a dark outer glow to separate them from the background. these blended areas also help to reduce artifacts that appear with harsh transitions on straight lines. If it's an option , you might even want to use color for the + and - cabling (usually blue and red). As Wade suggested, you might try rendering to a different spec, but depending on what your intended final output is, this may not help at all, so working a bit on the graphic might pay off more.

  • What adobe software do I use to design graphics for a 24 grid window display?

    Hi there,
I know in some designing cases you use multiple programs to complete your design goal and I'm thinking this may be a case. If you could help me figure out what programs to use, I'd appreciate it.
I have a large storefront window system that is roughly 5 windows wide by 4 windows tall. The client wants me to display large graphics across multiple windows. Would I use InDesign for the layout and illustrator for the graphic design? or would photoshop work better for the layout? I tried just making a grid of art boards in illustrator but the art boards go beyond the canvas because they are so large and I'm not sure how to resize the canvas.
Any insight on the matter would be much appreciated. Thank you very much!
    Caleb Kingston

I wonder if an application like Vector Works or similar would be appropriate for constructing and displaying a storefront prototype?  In response to your question, you would be better off scaling everything down to a manageable size in "Illustrator".  All of your photograpic images can be prepared in Photoshop and then Placed in Illustrator for output.  The key here is to define the output device's print size and scale the entire project down proportionately to that device.  Another thing to consider is how to plan to present the ideas you come up with.  Each panel separately or all together as a composite?  Sounds like a nice project.  Good luck as you proceed.  I see absolutely no reason to use InDesign unless you are more familiar with that application than you are with Illustrator.

  • Using Graphic Equaliser For Radio to Reduce Hiss?

Using Graphic Equaliser For Radio to Reduce Hiss?
I would like to use the graphic equaliser to reduce hiss while using the radio. Does anyone know if this is possible and how to do it?
    Kind Regards

You can adjust adjust the individual low pass filters to minimise the effect of hiss, and although this will mitigate the problem somewhat and make it less intrusive, it won't stop it altogether.

  • Use Story to create a script for subtitle text

I have found a way to use the Speech Analysis through After Affects to create subtitles. However, the film I am making is a documentary and in a foreign language. We have the transcripts of the translated speech and I need to get that into Premiere and eventually After Effects to create the visual subtitles.
I have seen some threads on using Story to enter transcripts, but I'm new to this Story application and can't figure out how to use it for what I want. I need to assign the text I have to a specific place on the clip. Can Story (and/or Premiere) do this and how do I do it?
I have assigned a scene number then some text, but nothing is showing up in the clip's metadata with the script assigned to it.
Any suggestions? Any other ideas for getting text assigned to timecode points for subtitles?
    Thanks.

If you are looking at attaching the story scripts (scene's) data to the clips metadata please follow the instructions from this thread

  • Has anyone used Motion for 'still graphics' (300dpi)?

I used Motion a lot several years ago on a film. Great app. I'm producing a series of Ebooks right now, with many graphics. I'm using Pages, Photoshop, EasyDraw, for the graphics ... but remember how marvelous Motion was.
I'm wondering if it is possible to use Motion just for doing still graphics? And how one might set the resolution to reflect this (something like 300 dpi), ... or can one set any size (a very large 72dpi (given it's designed for motion and video) that can then be translated to 300 dpi after the fact.
If anyone has ever used Motion for simple non-motion graphics, I'm all ears,
    Ben

First of all, create a new document in Photoshop: enter your output format (US Letter, A4, whatever) with 300 dpi settings. Then change your units from to pixels and that is the size that your motion project should have.
Remember though, that Motion outputs only in RGB that has a much wider gamut than CMYK, which is the colorspace of print. So you might still have to color proof your image in Photoshop.
Also, depending on your graphics card, Motion has a limit of image sizes it can work on: 2K, 4K or 8K in the current models. For large print formats that could be not enough.
I would never use Motion for print jobs. However I can imagine that I could export (with transparency) some effects like stills from animated particles, 3D replicators and import them into my photoshop composition. So Motion could be used more like an extra tool.

which mac mini should i go for: the one with AMD graphic card or Intel. I meanly going to use this for hometheater and HD movies.

Intel HD 3000 graphics card can easily handle HD movies up to 1080p. But if you are looking at higher resolutions possibly 4k or 8k that are being released this summer in new TV's, I would go with the AMD card. The AMD card would be good for video and picture applications and also games. But if this is strictly to power your 1080p home theater setup then the choice is obviously the Intel HD 3000.

It's beta open source software so I'm not surprised. It does't look to be too active a project, so I don't know if it will help or not but you might be maybe better off posting a bug report on their Sourceforge page here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kompozer/

  • Does Premiere Pro 2 use graphics card for playback?

Does Premiere Pro 2 use graphics card for playback? I am using a 350W PSU, so my nVidia 6600GT runs in low-power mode, and my video playback in Premiere is choppy. The same .avi files play fine in a media player, so it can't be a disc issue I guess... Please advise, thank you!

Only the latest CS5 uses SELECTED card's GPU for video acceleration
    >same .avi files play fine in a media player
Playback is not at all the same as editing
Use the FREE http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to find out what codec is inside that AVI wrapper
Anything other than DV AVI type 2 with 48khz sound is not going to do well in Premiere
