There is a good explanation for the HW connections on X-Fi User's Guide (look the guide from driver/software CD, or DL it from CL Support -> Product documentation).
You get a way better results by adding a pre-amp for the quitar (this can be a mixer, D/I Box, POD, etc.).
http://www.zzounds.com/cat--Behringer-Mixers--2950
http://www.zzounds.com/prodsearch?form=prodsearch&q=POD&submit.x=2&submit .y=0
http://www.zzounds.com/prodsearch?form=prodsearch&q=DI+box&submit.x=0&sub mit.y=0
Some settings -
- set mode to Audio Creation
- open the source channel (microphone, etc) you have connected the quitar
- set the recording to microphone (or to whatever port you're using)
- you can apply some HW effects here too
- use ASIO
If you want to record or add effects into your sound path, you need to install a sequencer (or /multitracker/host/etc). There are some free of them (and lots of free effects and demos (like NI Guitar Rig, DSound GT-Player, etc) you can try/use) listed @ KVR.

  • What do you guys suggest for playing guitar thru my Macbook Air? I use guitar pro software to learn tabs but I would like to be able to play along thru the computer. thanks

I used to play my guitar thru my PC using a line 6 Guitar port, Then I could play along with Guitar Pro tabs or MP3's. Now I have the Guitar Pro software on my Mac Air and I neeed an interface (which I can get at the Appple store- guitar plug to USB) but I neeed a suggestion for what software to run as an amp simulator, maybe line 6 is the best or maybe there are others I should check out. I know there are guitar "apps" for Ipads etc but this is a Mac. BTW I did not like the guitar sounds produced by Garageband. Thanks

I'm using GJABB with Logic Express 7.2.3 and have no problems.
However, I haven't started messing around with the modulation wheel yet which is pretty important in this libary since it controls volume. The sounds are great, though. I've just raised the mod wheel on each track to get the basic arrangement done, then I'll try the mod wheel for expression.
One thing about this library is that it pretty much forces you to do single horn lines since each patch is monophonic (like the real instrument). It does produce pretty nice results that way. I haven't tried upping the polyphony as I like the results this way.

  • Using Guitar Rig 4 / Amplitube 3 in Logic Pro

    Hi,
I'm using Guitar Rig 4 and Amplitube 3 as inserts in my Logic 9 projects and all is working fine.
However neither GR4 or A3 respond to MIDI cc changes from my Apogee GIO foot controller. I've been able to get both products to respond correctly to patch/stompbox changes on the Apogee GIO when used "stand alone".
It looks like when used as an "insert" the Apogee Gio MIDI cc info is not getting thru - When using Ampdesigner/Pedelboard (which I don't very often) the Apogee GIO MIDI cc functions correctly.
Is there a way of getting the MIDI CC messages thru to an insert?
    Thanks for you help

Insert them as "Midi controlled AU" Plugs into an instrument slot, there is an xtra folder for those Plug-Ins and many manufacturers supply these versions.

  • When and how does the message context get removed from the message when we use pass thru send port

    Friends,
i have a doubt regarding message context.
Assume i have used XMLRecieve pipeline in the receive side to receive the message so that the message context is created. I.e properties are promoted/written.
now if we use pass thru transmit pipe line at send side, how and when does the message context get removed from the message?? Since pass thru does not have any stages/components, how does the message context removed and sent out a pure message to destination???
i mean what exactly happens here to remove the context??
    Ravindar

    Thanks for the reply.
"The Context is created by the Adapter, regardless of any Pipeline or Pipeline Component.  It has nothing to do with PassThrough vs. XmlReceive, although XmlReceive will write Promoted Properties to the existing Context,
    as can any other Component."
yeah yeah, adapter does create some properties in context. You are right, i am aware of it. I just missed to explain it clearly. what i meant is addition of context properties will not happen if pass thru used. Thanks its clear.
"No.  The Context already exists on the Message when it comes from the MessageBox and
is equally available to any Component in any Stage.  The Context that hits the Pipeline is whatever was last Persisted, either by a Receive Port or Orchestration.  It is not created by the XmlAssembler (XmlTransmit)"
You are right , the context already exists on the message while it leaves the receive port, and once it persists
to message box the context and message context gets stored in messages in relative tables.
Now as you said the components get the message from the last persistence, assume i have a send port(with passthru)
subscriber and a orchestration subsrciber for this message.
Orchestration gets the message with context right!!
if the send sendport(with passthru) also gets message along with context, then where is this context removed/demoted
while sending it out?.  i guess as per SAAkhlaq said,
here sendport(with passthru) should get a pure message without context as passthru used.
or is it that ultimately send adapter removes the context completely?
or is it something like biztalk run time load the context from database into cache and both orchestration and send port gets pure message, and if needed they use context from cache???
sorry i may be troubling you, but i am confused. i hope i am not creating any nuisance with this
    post.

  • Using guitar amp sims live onstage... requesting your feedback

I know this is mainly a recording forum, but I expect a few of you out there are using amp sims live. So I've about a dozen gigs now and it's been OK for the most part. I also use Logic to run backing tracks, and I've been using different amp sim plug-ins on live guitar tracks to test them out and see what works best. For the most part I'm using Guitar Amp Pro, but I'm also trying Amplitube 2 and Guitar Rig 3. In general, I've had comments from FOH audio techs saying that my tones are pretty good, but there's always seems to be a bit of harshness and thinness in the tone that is not apparent in my headphones at home, and if anything I tend to reduce the treble and presence in all my patches, below that of the factory presets anyway.
I mainly play through the monitor systems at gigs, and am looking at different in-ear options, but last weekend I played a venue with limited on-stage monitor capabilities, so I made provisions on my own. I split off the stereo signal coming out of my Firebox interface and went into a little Mackie 1202 mixer, then into a Crest stereo power amp, then into my Vox 4x12 stereo guitar cabinet. You can't run a processed guitar signal back into a regular guitar amp head as this combination sounds like ka-ka, understandably, because the amp sims have already processed what the amp would then process a 2nd time. Anyway, I ran the EQ's on the mixer totally flat, so in effect I was sending the uncolored original sound to the cabinet.
Surprisingly, in this new configuration my tone was actually very good and "amp-like" sounding. My theory is that the 4x12 cabinet, not having a horn or high frequency driver, naturally removed any high end harshness with it's limited frequency response (it's probably about 8Khz bandwidth I'm guessing). I might have expected my tone to be muffled, so either I'm running too much high end in my patches or what, but it's no wonder that a monitor or FOH loudspeaker system with separate high frequency drivers would sound the way they do. My next thoughts are to maybe test running a low pass filter on the output strips in Logic to roll-off frequencies above 8kHz or so, to limit what gets fed out to the monitors and FOH.
Another theory about the thin sound is due to the fact that in an amp sim environment on-stage, there really isn't any air moving speakers like in a true mic'd up guitar cabinet on-stage. In terms of amp sim preferences, I find that Guitar Amp Pro is not as detailed or warm as the others, but it can be tweaked for acceptable higher gain tones and some really nice clean tones. I think in general, Amplitube 2 has the fullest fattest tone in some of their amp models, and while Guitar Rig 3 has some really nice models which sound fine in headphones or studio monitors, they seem to sound the thinnest live of the three sims I've tested.
I know guitar tone is a very personal thing and what sounds good to one person may sound like crud to another, but what generalities and experiences have some of you had? I think we're just on the tip of a revolution in live guitar, what with the new Stomp IO and Rig Kontrol products coming out, just to name a few... Also, how are some of you finding the latency issues that are still hindering this technology to some degree? Many thanks in advance!

hey thanks for the responses guys! I usually get notified via email when a reply is posted but that didn't happen for this post (?). Anyway, great advice, but in the meantime I've actually managed to make a dramatic improvement in my onstage tone and it was very simple, and logical too. The first rather embarrassing point is that I tried setting up my tones with different sets of headphones and whoa what a difference. One would expect that different headphones will all sound different (as it is with loudspeakers) but the Yamaha headphones I was previously using removed pretty much every bit of high-end harshness that I was hearing on stage through the monitors, so what I thought was a good sound in reality was NOT. With my new BeyerDynamic earbuds (which I will be using as in-ears onstage soon) I heard pretty much exactly the same harshness that the Yamaha's were masking.
The fix to this was actually pretty simple: in the cabinet simulators of the plug-ins, I simply moved the mic to "off-center" instead of "on centre" where I had the majority of my patches saved as. Other than maybe a little less presence and treble, the tone was instantly 100% better. The funny thing is, from all the live shows I've done I always position the mic off-centre because it sounds better, doh!
I've played 4 shows since and 3 of them were festival style with great quality monitor rigs and my guitar absolutely rocked when on high gain tones, instead of giving my bandmates and the first few rows in the audience a very close shave The tone was very punchy, fat and "amp-like" and I was even getting some controllable feedback from the wedges. The guys in the band and even some FOH engineers commented that I had great tone so I felt alot better about the whole thing. The other show was a club with cheap monitors and while the sound was nowhere as good, it still was not harsh like before.
I admit that my overall tone is maybe still not quite as dynamic as it could be and there's a minimal (but almost unnoticeable) amount of latency, but overall it sounds like a guitar should, and I've heard many players with good quality amp rigs that sound much worse. I'm going to continue with my "ampless" crusade (no hard feelings jnashguitar haha!) and as technology improves I'm confident I'll continue to zero in on that elusive holy grail of guitar tone that every guitarist can attest to. That's the thing with guitarists, we think we have achieved the perfect tone, but after a few months we start looking again, but that's what makes it fun, buying new toys, trying new things. Good tone is everywhere!

  • Using Guitar Rig

Think I found some limitations on using Guitar Rig with Mainstage. I have also posted this on NI's forums for some sort of resolution.
It appears, even though you can control just about every other parameter of GR in Mainstage, you are not able to assign a Mainstage controller to a GR controller. Therefore any mappings within GR you have assigned to a controller (i.e. effect on/off, parameter moifier, etc.), you can not set that controller to be set by Mainstage. Also, I see no way to change the GR patch directly within Mainstage as appears to be available on such things as the EXS.
Also, you are not able to set GR as a software instrument with the guitar input on the sidechain within Mainstage. You still can in Logic Pro, but it is not available in Mainstage. Perhaps this is why those patches and controller assignments can not be controlled?
Anyone have any idea how to get this functionality working in Mainstage?

  • Using Guitar Rig 5 in MainStage

    Hello all!
I'm just getting started with MainStage, and so far quite liking the possibilities.
However, I've hit one thing which seems to be an issue for me, assuming I've understood it correctly. Each patch seems to have it's own channel strips, with it's own AU instruments etc... which to me seems a bad idea. Surely in this state, I will end up having hundreds of AUs running for the same software, which would slow things down?
On top of that, I'm running keyboard, guitar and vocal through Mainstage. All for me, as I switch what I'm doing depending on the song we're performing (and sometimes mid-song). However, this means I may sometimes want to change a guitar patch while keeping my keyboard the same, or vice versa.
So, to my question; is there a way to change AU presets without changing MainStage patch? I mainly need to do this with Guitar Rig 5 from NI, but I'd also quite like to do it with Massive and Reaktor too.
Not quite sure I've worded that very well, so an example:
I have a MainStage layout set up, which has my vocal going through clean with maybe some EQ etc. I've also got a guitar running through Guitar Rig 5, and my keyboard into Massive. During a song, I start off on keys playing Fat Bass 1 on my keys in Massive for the intro, switch to a distortion for the verse with my guitar, then Fat Bass 2 for the chorus in Massive. Maybe later I'll want a clean guitar in a bridge or something too, with some string hits thrown in from Massive again.
The way MainStage is set out currently, I'd need a patch for each combination, which would leave me with at least 3 "patches" for one song and three instances each of Massive and GR running. I'd much prefer to just send in a control message to change the presets in Massive and Guitar Rig.
    Running on a 2014 15" MacBook Pro, 2.2GHz i7/16GB RAM/256GB SSD.
    Thanks

I haven't been able to find a way to get it to work with Guitar Rig yet, but for Massive (and presumably Reaktor) I have found a solution. First, create an instance in MainStage, load it with Massive and load the presets you would like to use into Massive's preset bank. Turn it on so that it will respond to patch changes.
Navigate to the 'Assignments & Mappings' tab of the edit page. Find the device you want to use to send the MIDI CC messages. If it isn't in the list, click on 'New Assignment', which usually creates an Unmapped assignment in the 'All Devices' list. Click the area where it says No Assignment to bring up the Hardware Input popup menu. Choose your device, assign channel to 1-16, and change Type to absolute. From the number menu, choose the CC number you want to send the patch change. Set MIDI thru to Automatic. Name the input to something like CC to PG01.
Click on it to highlight the mapping info. In the far left side of the Control Inspector, you'll see a list of items such as Same as Input, Block, etc. You will also see the name of the instance containing Massive. Select it to bring up a list of control parameters, such as Volume, Mute, etc. From the list, choose MIDI Controller. The third item down in that menu is Program Change. Select it.
You'll see the Parameter values for Program Change. For saved value, select the Program Change number you want to send. Number scheme is 0-127. Now, here's the tricky part that nearly drove me mad before figuring it out. For NI instruments, one of the Range Max or Min numbers must be set to zero and the other to a non zero number. If you want to select PG 0, set saved value as 0, range max as 1 and range min at 0. For any other patch number, set saved value and range max to the same number and set range min to 0.
Also, make sure that the device thats sending your CC control message is configured as a toggle switch, not a momentary, or else it will send the range min program change number when you lift your foot or finger from the button. If you want to send multiple patch changes, add more mappings and assign different CC numbers to select the patch number you desire.
An additional benefit is that you can load up a single instance of Massive with as many presets as it can hold and use aliases of that instance for other songs. In this case you would create a new MainStage patch and populate it with an alias of your Massive instance. Set up a separate hardware input (I use logic remote) and rather than setting the number to a CC controller, set it to Any. By entering the same NI mapping parameters as above, it will send the correct PG info to Massive when you select the MainStage patch containing the alias. If you need to select multiple Massive patches from the new MainStage patch, simply assign the CC controllers to select new patch assignments. All that info is freely assignable and saved on a per MainStage patch basis, so your first instance could select the patch (say 0) and use three CC controllers to set patches 1-3. On the next MainStage patch containing the Massive alias, you could set the PG to select patch 4 and those same controllers can be set to select patches 5-7.

I, too, am receiving these same errors when I do my backups. The sysadmin took the systems down over the weekend and the backup has failed ever since. Database is up, ORACLE_SID looks fine, what could be wrong? This nightly backup worked before system went down. I can connect as sysdba using the ORACLE_SID as set.

  • GarageBand stops recording immediately when using Guitar Rig Session

When I try to record a guitar into GarageBand using my Guitar Rig Session the recording starts, then immediately stops. This happens on a new track, or on an existing track. Everything was fine before I updated GarageBand to the latest version (6.0.4) via the App Store. I also updated to OSX 10.6.8 too. I've tried recording a track in Reaper and it works fine so I doubt it's a Guitar Rig/OSX 10.6.8 issue so I'm suspecting that it's the latest GarageBand version that's to blame. This discussion was the closest thing I could find to raise a support ticket about this. I'll have to switch to Reaper for now but if it's not fixed soon, I may not come back to GarageBand!

Native Instruments say they'll have a fix to make their software work in Lion in September. From what I've heard it only affects them running in 64 bit mode so try Guitar Rig in 32 bit mode if you can. I've switched to Reaper like I said and I'm finding the transition quite easy. Give their demo a try...
