Using HP Laserjet 5100 as a postscript level 3 device

Hi Smart People,
I'm usually pretty good at figuring this kind of thing out, but this setup has me at the edge of my understanding. If you could help me out, I would be very grateful.
I'm planning to use my 5100 to print offset plates for use on a printing press. I'd like to be able to use Adobe Acrobat Pro to output RIP-processed color separations with trapping. Acrobat says that this is possible with Postcript Level 3 devices, and as far as I know the laserjet 5100 is such a printer.
I'm connecting the printer to the computer using a ethernet cable to the Jetdirect (directly, without using an ethernet switch). I can get the printer printing just fine, but when I try to send a separation job to the printer, I get an error message on the printer display (79.00 PRINTER ERROR). I've tried using both AppleTalk and TCP/IP and get the same results.
I've read in the HP documentation that the parallel port is the only connection that can access all of the printer's capabilities. This has me thinking that connection the printer via the Jetdirect precludes the use of the internal Postscript Level 3 RIP. So my questions are:
Is this true?
If it is true, is it possible to connect the printer via the parallel port to my mac? Maybe with a parallel-to-USB converter cable? Or with an ethernet switch with a parallel port printer server?
I've seen mention on the internet of a set of files from HP called something like "HP Laserjet Monochrome for Mac" that seems to install postscript printing capabilities, but I can't find a functioning link to the file (the file seems to have been deleted from HP's site). Is this what I'm looking for?
Is there anything else I can do (besides buy a -shudder- PC to act as a print server) to get this working?
Thanks a ton,
Gary

I think the jetdirect is the correct method to use all the printer features (postscript 3).
Setting up a direct ethernet connection is tricky. You must set a manual IP address on the Mac, even to use appletalk. You should also set an IP address on the jetdirect, then add the printer using IP > jetdirect protocol.
Set computer and printer to be in the same local-reserved subnet - example - 192.168.3.3 for computer and 192.168.3.4 for printer (subnet mask 255.255.255.0 for both).

  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw - PostScript support?

    Hi,
    I'm looking to purchase a new printer/scanner/copier(/fax is a nice to have, but not mandatory), and I'm deciding between the following models:
    HP LaserJet Pro 100 color MFP M175nw
    HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw
    PostScript support is important for me, and I know that the 175 has this.  However, I'm not sure about the 177, even after digging through several web pages and documents.  Here's what I found:
    - The main specs page for the 177 says that it supports "PCLm".  I'm not familiar with this PCL variant, so I don't know how it compares to PCL5 or PCL6, etc.  I was unable to find more information on "PCLm".
    - The "Software Included" section of Page 2 of the PDF datasheet for the 177 mentions "HP PostScript" driver.  This is the only place where I've seen any potential indication that the 177 supports PostScript.  This section also mentions a "PCLmS" driver.  I could not find any further information on "PCLmS".
    - The  for User Guide the 177 only mentions PostScript in a section that refers to ePrint.  However, it does not imply that the 177 itself supports PostScript.
    - The Product Specifications page (in the Support section of the HP site) for the 177 has a "Printing Specifications" section which lists only "PCL3 GUI" next to "Device languages".
    I'm guessing that the 177 does not support PostScript, but does anyone have any more definitive information?  Also, is there a description of PCLm / PCLmS somewhere?
    Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro OS 10.6.8 & HP Laserjet 5100: Won't print

    I have a macbook pro. Just updated to 10.6.8. I cannot print to my hp laserjet 5100. Printer pauses.
    I have loaded HP 5100 series driver as per directions. No data is transmitted to printer. The printer is paused. It doesn't appear to be a cabling problem. It doesn't appear to be a problem with the printer itself. Could really use some help with this one. Appreciatively, reyo1

  • Connecting to HP LaserJet 5100 printer on Win7, 32bit PC from a Win7, 64bit PC

    I'm having a heck a time trying to add a printer that is on another machine. The printer is an HP LaserJet5100 and is connected to a Win7, 32bit pc using a pcl6 driver. The PC I want to add this other printer to is a Win7, 64bit. I went to HP Drivers and downloaded a HP LaserJet 5100 pcl6 driver for Win7, 64bit, and ran it, using traditional mode, on the PC that I'm trying to install a printer to. I chose "Add a network Printer..." and then pick the printer that I want to connect to.   I get a Windows Printer Installation pop up that says "Checking for Windows Update. This might take a while..." and then get another popup that says "No driver found". I then get another pop up to locate the driver. Browsing to the driver files that I just download, I find eleven files of the .inf file type, but none of them are the right file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Reader 9.2 does not choose the right postscript level

    Hi,
    I use an old HP4500 Color Laser Jet (it still prints very well and I have a lot of toner :-)). every time I want to print a pdf on it, it does not work, for the adobe reader sets the postscript level to 3 although the printer has only 2.
    I've found the information anywhere in the adobe pages, which say:
    "Note: Acrobat sets the PostScript level automatically, based on the selected printer."
    In my printer settings (Win7-64 bit, driver: HP Universal Printing PS Version 12.4.2009, 61.94.3.37) I have set the level to 2 (Dokumentoptions:Postscript Options:Postscript language level: 2)
    But Adobe Reader is not interested in my settings and sets it to 3 every time and I have to change it manually every time. That is not funny, when printing many pdfs.... :-(((
    I don't understand this, it has happend with another driver under windows xp the same way, but now I have lost my patience.
    Why does the reader does not work properly or can I tell him to do so ?
    Best regards

    Thanks Bernd!  Works just fine now. Am I that obtuse that I wasn't able to
    figure this out on my own?

  • Exporting files to a eps postscript level one

    hello all.
    We have just bought a new cutter plotter and the software that was supplied was artcut for a PC, I use a Mac and would like to use Illustrator (CS4) as the main design programme but to import the files into Artcut the need to be a eps postscript level one - does anyone know of a plugin that can be used to do this?
    if you need more info please ask.
    Thanks
    Craig_5br

    Craig,
    I wonder whether it can be done from version 8 or something. I can choose between level 2 and 3 in 10, 1 is shown but greyed out so I believe it is possible if the version is old enough.
    If you (still) have one of the old versions, you may have a look and see; hopefully you can downsave and take it from there. Someone else might tell us.

    Yeah, that's kinda what I thought would happen.
    Do you have a wired or wireless router?  It will not have to be connected to the Internet to work.  It will issue the printer an IP address and your Mac will be happy.

  • Postscript level 3 support

    Hi,
    I support Adobe output designer for some customers who have recently purchased new postscript level3 printers.
    All of the jetform presentment targets are postscript level 2 and use the setpapertray command to select the papertray on the printer.
    This command is not supported in level 3 and so tray selection does not work...
    Adobe have created a few level 3 targets (Xerox i think) but although these use the  input priority method of selecting the paper trays
    which works correctly, the postscript is badly formed and the page co-ordinates are reset on every page...causing every page except the first to be
    blank.
    Does anyone know of a fix for this or have a working ICS file for a postscript level 3 device.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    What version of java are you using?
    Are you using any threads?
    Why can't you just print two copies and combine the whole pages? (kidding)

  • How to Use Transient View Objects to Store Session-level Global Variables

    hi
    Please consider section "40.8.5 How to Use Transient View Objects to Store Session-level Global Variables"
    at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/web.1111/b31974/bcstatemgmt.htm#ADFFD19610
    Based on this documentation I created the example application
    at http://www.consideringred.com/files/oracle/2010/ProgrammaticalViewObjectAndRollbackApp-v0.01.zip
    It behaves as show in the screencast at http://screencast.com/t/qDvSQCgpvYdd
    Its Application Module has a Transient View Object instance "MyEmployeesContextVOVI", as master for the child View Object instance "EmpInCtxJobVI".
    On rollback the Transient View Object instance keeps its row and attribute values.
    Also when passivation and activation is forced (using jbo.ampool.doampooling=false ) the Transient View Object instance seems to keep its row and attribute values.
    questions:
    - (q1) Why does the expression #{bindings.MyEmployeesContextVOVIIterator.dataControl.transactionDirty} evaluate as true when a Transient View Object instance attribute value is changed (as shown in screencast at http://screencast.com/t/qDvSQCgpvYdd )?
    - (q2) What would be a robust approach to make a Transient View Object instance more self-contained, and manage itself to have only one single row (per instance) at all times (and as such removing the dependency on the Application Module prepareSession() as documented in "5. Create an empty row in the view object when a new user begins using the application module.")?
    many thanks
    Jan Vervecken

    Thanks for your reply Frank.
    q1) Does sample 90 help ? http://blogs.oracle.com/smuenchadf/examples/
    Yes, the sample from Steve Muench does help, "90. Avoiding Dirtying the ADF Model Transaction When Transient Attributes are Set [10.1.3] "
    at http://blogs.oracle.com/smuenchadf/examples/#90
    It does point out a difference in marking transactions dirty by different layers of the framework, "... When any attribute's value is changed through an ADFM binding, the ADFM-layer transaction is marked as dirty. ...".
    This can be illustrate with a small change in the example application
    at http://www.consideringred.com/files/oracle/2010/ProgrammaticalViewObjectAndRollbackApp-v0.02.zip
    It now shows the result of both these expressions on the page ...
    #{bindings.MyEmployeesContextVOVIIterator.dataControl.transactionDirty}
    #{bindings.MyEmployeesContextVOVIIterator.dataControl.dataProvider.transaction.dirty}... where one can be true and the other false respectively.
    See also the screencast at http://screencast.com/t/k8vgNqdKgD
    Similar to the sample from Steve Muench, another modification to the example application introduces MyCustomADFBCDataControl
    at http://www.consideringred.com/files/oracle/2010/ProgrammaticalViewObjectAndRollbackApp-v0.03.zip
    public class MyCustomADFBCDataControl
      extends JUApplication
      @Override
      public void setTransactionModified()
        ApplicationModule vApplicationModule = (ApplicationModule)getDataProvider();
        Transaction vTransaction = vApplicationModule.getTransaction();
        if (vTransaction.isDirty())
          super.setTransactionModified();
    }Resulting in what seems to be more consistent/expected transaction (dirty) information,
    see also the screencast at http://screencast.com/t/756yCs1L1
    Any feedback on why the ADF Model layer is so eager to mark a transaction dirty is always welcome.
    Currently, question (q2) remains.

  • Windows 7: Hp LaserJet 5100 PCL6 slow network printing.

    Hello, I'm trying to setup Hp LaserJet 5100 PCL6 that is connected to a WinXP SP2 machine as my Windows 7 x64 default LAN printer. Steps I've done so far:
    1. Downloaded HP UNC 5.0.3.
    2. Installed it.
    3. Tried printing test page, notepad text with no results.
    4. In UNC add printer dialog, selected my printer and set test feature to minimal.
    5. Tried printing test page. Printer responded and printed an error message, about an unsupported kernel command.
    6. Went to Start-devices and printers-add printer, local, LPT_1, Search Driver in Windows Update, Hp LaserJet 5100 PCL6, finish.
    7. Accessed "Local Printer" properties, went to Ports selected \\%winxppc%\HP_5000 HP_UNC port.
    8. Printed test page, notepad text, AutoCad 2011 Plot. Tested A4 and A3 formats, everything printed fine.
    The problem is when trying to print a large file ~25-50 Mbytes it takes from 10 to 20 minutes to print, whereas the same file sent from the other WinXp machine prints much much faster.
    So, any possible solutions?

  • Problem using HP LaserJet 5M with AEBS

    HISTORY:
    Well over a year ago I was able to add a 5M printer to the LAN port of my AEBS and print wirelessly using first a G4 PB and later a G4 mini. This is my only printer. It showed up every time I hit Cmd-P. So easy/convenient. Recently I migrated to a Intel duo mini and found I could not print using the laserJet 5M. Talked to Apple Tech Support and they said I would need to wait until HP wrote a new Intel Duo-based driver. Yeeps!
    WHAT I CAN/CANNOT DO:
    Went back to the Printer Setup Utility and did considerable experimentation (tried different settings). No luck getting the new mini to print via the AEBS.
    However, I did get it to print when I connected the HP 5M directly to the mini using an ethernet cable. However this is both inconvenient and lame as I frequently use a variety of computers.
    It feels to me like I'm very close to successful wifi printing with this configuration. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Was finally, on my own, able to get the laserJet to print when it was connected to the LAN port of the AEBS using the Intel Duo mini.
    Required a lot of trial and error. So it is possible even though AppleCare said impossible.
